Genetic analysis reveals the wild ancestors of the llama and the alpaca.   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
The origins of South America's domestic alpaca and llama remain controversial due to hybridization, near extirpation during the Spanish conquest and difficulties in archaeological interpretation. Traditionally, the ancestry of both forms is attributed to the guanaco, while the vicu?a is assumed never to have been domesticated. Recent research has, however, linked the alpaca to the vicu?a, dating domestication to 6000-7000 years before present in the Peruvian Andes. Here, we examine in detail the genetic relationships between the South American camelids in order to determine the origins of the domestic forms, using mitochondrial (mt) and microsatellite DNA. MtDNA analysis places 80% of llama and alpaca sequences in the guanaco lineage, with those possessing vicu?a mtDNA being nearly all alpaca or alpaca-vicu?a hybrids. We also examined four microsatellites in wild known-provenance vicu?a and guanaco, including two loci with non-overlapping allele size ranges in the wild species. In contrast to the mtDNA, these markers show high genetic similarity between alpaca and vicu?a, and between llama and guanaco, although bidirectional hybridization is also revealed. Finally, combined marker analysis on a subset of samples confirms the microsatellite interpretation and suggests that the alpaca is descended from the vicu?a, and should be reclassified as Vicugna pacos. This result has major implications for the future management of wild and domestic camelids in South America.  相似文献

Fifty-four black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) (five juvenile males, 22 adult males, five juvenile females, and 22 adult females) from Humboldt County, California (USA) were evaluated for sex and age-specific differences in parasite prevalences and intensities, 26 February through 30 October 1996. Nematodes found included Biogastranema leporis in 42 hares (78% prevalence), Rauschia triangularis in 26 hares (48%), Trichostrongylus calcaratus in 14 hares (26%), and Trichuris sylvilagi in two hares (4%). Cestodes found included Taenia sp. cysticerci in five hares (9%) and Taenia sp. coenurus found in one hare (2%). Ectoparasites found included the ticks Dermacentor variabilis on 10 hares (19%) and Ixodes spinipalpis (= Ixodes neotomae) on nine hares (17%), as well as the anoplurid louse Haemodipsus setoni on 12 hares (22%). No significant differences in the parasite prevalences or intensities were found between male and female jackrabbits; this was for all males and females collectively, juvenile males and females only, as well as adult males and females only. Combining male and female hosts, adult jackrabbits had a significantly higher prevalence of B. leporis and R. triangularis compared to juveniles. This is the first known report of Trichostrongylus calcaratus, Rauschia triangularis, Trichuris sylvilagi, and Dermacentor variabilis among black-tailed jackrabbits and the first known report of T. calcaratus and T. sylvilagi in the western USA. This is the first published report of I. spinipalpis, the vector for Lyme disease in California, on black-tailed jackrabbits.  相似文献

We report on the epidemiology of tattoo disease in a community of bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from the Sado estuary, Portugal. The presence of tattoos (T++) and tattoo-like (T+) lesions was examined in 586 photographic records of 35 dolphins taken from 1994 to 1997. Images were rated into 3 categories: good (GI), average (AI) and poor (PI). Dolphins positive for T++ lesions were observed in 19 GI. Dolphins with T+ lesions were seen in 39 GI, 23 AI and 6 PI. For statistical analysis the dolphins were divided into 2 age classes (immature and adult) and the data grouped into 2 periods (1994-1995 and 1996-1997). Minimum prevalence of T++ lesions in 32 dolphins was 21.9% in 1994-1995 and 15.6% in 1996-1997. Variation in prevalence of tattoo disease between the 2 age classes was examined for each period, excluding animals with T+ lesions or considering them either positive or negative for tattoos. Prevalence of the disease was significantly higher in immature dolphins than in adults during both periods, except in the first one when T+ lesions were considered as true tattoos. Temporal variation in prevalence of tattoo disease was examined in 23 adults. Prevalence was significantly higher in 1994-1995 (39.1%) than in 1996-1997 (17.4%). Differences in the number and quality of pictures did not cause significant biases that could have favoured the detection of lesions between age classes or periods. Minimal persistence of the disease ranged between 3 and 45.5 mo. The lesions converted into light grey marks when healing, but may recur. The presence of very large lesions in 2 adult dolphins affected for years may be related to the contamination of the estuary. The high prevalence of the disease, its long persistence, as well as higher frequency in immature individuals, suggest that it is endemic in bottlenose dolphins from the Sado estuary. The contribution of tattoo disease to the decline of this community should be investigated. Three of the 5 dolphins that died during this study had T++ and T+ lesions.  相似文献

The meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis) was found in 22 (7%) of 300 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) (257 adults, 43 fawns) examined from Nebraska (USA) during November 1996. None of 53 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) (47 adults and 6 fawns) examined were infected. Twenty-two white-tailed deer from 18 counties in eastern Nebraska were infected with Parelaphostrongylus tenuis. This is the first record of P. tenuis in white-tailed deer from this state.  相似文献

Immunoblotting with antiserum specific to human Gc protein was used to identify Gc protein as the previously reported polymorphic plasma postalbumin (Po) of llamas and alpacas. A survey on the prevalence of Thelazia spp. in the province of Bari (Apulia region, Italy) in slaughtered native horses was conducted from June 20, 1995 to April 3, 1996. Both eyes from 409 ten-month- to 4-year-old native animals were examined. Sixty horses (14.7%) were found parasitized by Thelazia lacrymalis. Three hundred-sixty one parasite specimens (220 females, 99 males and 42 larvae) were collected with a mean count burden of 6.0-5.1 (range 1 to 20) per head. T. lacrymalis specimens were found free in the conjunctiva and behind the nictitancte, in the excretory ducts of the Harderian gland and in the ducts of the lacrimal glands. Thelazia specimens were significantly more common in horses of 3-4 years. Gross examination of all infected animals showed a follicular conjunctivitis. This is the first report of T. lacrymalis horse infection in Italy.  相似文献

Lesions in four captive pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) naturally infected with Parelaphostrongylus tenuis in eastern Nebraska (USA) are described in this report. Animals were bright and alert with hind limb ataxia that progressed to sternal or lateral recumbency between July 28 and October 17, 1998. Animals were euthanized due to disease progression despite therapy. Multifocal decubital ulcers over bony prominences occurred in two animals and chronic unilateral otitis media was present in one animal. Histopathologic examination revealed severe Wallerian degeneration randomly scattered throughout the spinal cords of all four animals. Spinal cord sections from two animals contained adult nematode parasites consistent with P. tenuis. This is the first report of naturally occurring P. tenuis infection in pronghorn antelope. Pronghorn antelope should be considered susceptible to P. tenuis infection and contact with infected white-tailed deer as well as intermediate gastropod hosts of P. tenuis should be prevented in endemic areas.  相似文献

Lotus tenuis is a perennial legume with a good adaptation to infertile, heavy and waterlogging soils. It can replace alfalfa in these sites with a similar feeding value. An important constraint is its weak competitive capacity with other graminae and weed species in permanent pastures, having consequently a poor forage yield. The objective of the present research is to overcome this disadvantage, enhancing its competitive ability with foliar applications of GA3 (GA) and phosphorus (P), increasing L. tenuis forage yield. Field experiments were conducted during 1994 with foliar application of GA (50 mg.l-1) and during 1995 with foliar application of GA (25 and 50 mg.l-1), phosphorus (8 kg.ha-1, as P2O5) and their combinations, in permanent pastures with L. tenuis and other companion grasses. In 1994 GA 50 increased significantly L. tenuis dry matter (DML) in 64.6% but not the dry matter of graminae fraction (DMG) and in consequence the total dry matter of the pasture (TDMP) was increased. In 1995 all GA treatments and their combinations with phosphorus enhanced DML but not DMG. In this sense GA 25 + P was the most effective treatment with a 151% increment of DML. Consequently TDMP was significantly increased due to a larger participation of L. tenuis in the forage yield. This increase was achieved due to a greater length and diameter of L. tenuis branches, with a logical modification in leaf:stem ratio. Moreover GA treatments reduced L. tenuis flower number. Phosphorus treatment, applied alone, showed an increase in the DML. GA treatments did not modify the feeding value of the forage in L. tenuis and graminae fractions, except GA 50 and GA 50 + P in acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and crude protein (CP), respect to the control. The total crude protein (CP.m-2) was enhanced in all GA and GA + P treatments. Foliar GA3 and phosphorus spray applications increased the competitiveness of trefoil for light, on account of morphological changes in the spatial disposition of L. tenuis stems reaching faster the top of the pasture canopy. This practice can be an adequate alternative to increase the forage yield and total crude protein in permanent and cultivated pastures with a low cost-benefit ratio.  相似文献

Two pregnant llamas (Lama glama) infected with Toxoplasma gondii and their offspring were evaluated clinically and serologically. Llama 1 was inoculated orally with 1,000 infective occysts of the P89 strain of T. gondii at 82 days of gestation (DOG). Llama 2 became naturally infected with T. gondii between 26 and 119 DOG. Both llamas remained clinically normal and delivered healthy offspring. Sera collected from both llamas during pregnancy and from their offspring before and after colostral ingestion were evaluated for antibodies to T. gondii by the modified agglutination test (MAT), latex agglutination test (LAT), indirect hemagglutination test (IHAT), and the Sabin-Feldman dye test (DT). In llama 1, MAT antibody titers were < 1:20, 1:320, 1:1,280, 1:640, and 1:80 at 82, 97, 109, 132, and 152 DOG, respectively. The MAT titers in naturally infected llama 2 were < 1:32, 1:320-1:640, and 1:1,280 at 26, 119-200, and 346 DOG, respectively. In both llamas, antibody titers in the DT were of similar magnitude as the MAT, but titers in the LAT and IHAT were inconsistent. Antibodies to T. gondii were not detected in precolostral sera obtained from offspring of both llamas suggesting there was no fetal T. gondii infection.  相似文献

To compare the prevalence of Eimeria macusaniensis among midwestern llamas (Lama glama), alpacas (Lama pacos), and guanacos (Lama guanicoe), feces were obtained from Lama spp. in 10 states between October 1989 and February 1996. Feces were examined by centrifugal flotation in sugar solution (specific gravity--1.28-1.30), and oocysts were quantified by a modified McMaster method. Data were compared by host species and age classifications. Typical oocysts occurred in samples from 28% of 76 herds and 10.4% of 443 animals including 12% of 301 llamas, 7% of 115 alpacas, and 7.4% of 27 guanacos. Prevalence was significantly greater (P = 0.009) in animals < 1 yr of age in comparison to older animals for llams (22.1 v.s. 8.5%) and for all Lama spp. combined (17.1 vs. 8.4%). Fecal oocyst abundance was significantly greater (P = 0.001) in llamas < 1 yr of age in comparison to older llamas (30 vs. 16 oocysts per g of feces). Fecal oocyst intensities did not differ significantly. Prevalence in both age groups of midwestern llamas was greater than previously reported for llamas in the western United States. Prevalence in midwestern alpacas < 1 yr of age was lower than reported for alpacas of similar age in South America, but oocyst intensities were similar. These results indicate that infection with E. macusaniensis is more common in Lama spp. in North America than previously recognized.  相似文献

A 3-yr field trial was conducted on 8 commercial swine farms in Illinois to determine the effectiveness of a feline Toxoplasma gondii vaccine in reducing the exposure of swine to T. gondii. A vaccine consisting of live bradyzoites of the mutant T-263 strain, capable of preventing oocyst shedding by cats, was used in this study. Each farm was visited 3 times in 1994, 3 times in 1995, and once in 1996. Cats were trapped and inoculated with the T-263 oral vaccine during 1994 and 1995. On each visit, the following samples were collected: blood from pigs, cats, and mice for detection of serum antibodies to T. gondii, feces from cats to detect oocysts, and heart and brain tissues from rodents to determine the presence of T. gondii tissue cysts. The modified agglutination test (MAT), with a positive titer set at the 1:25 dilution, was used to determine serum antibodies. At first capture, 72.6% (61/84) of juvenile cats and 32.6% (31/95) of adult cats had no detectable antibodies (seronegative), indicating no prior exposure to T. gondii when they received their first vaccine. Of these first-time seronegative cats, 58.1% (18/31) of adult and 45.9% (28/61) of juvenile cats were recaptured and received a second dose of vaccine. Changes in the prevalence of T. gondii infection were evaluated from the prevaccination (1992, 1993) to the postvaccination (1996) period. Eleven cats (5%) were detected shedding oocysts between 1994 and 1996, of which 10 (90.1%) shed during 1994. The last detection of oocyst shedding by cats was during the first farm visit in 1995. There was a significant decrease in T. gondii seroprevalence for finishing pigs (P < 0.05, Wilcoxon sign rank test). There was a positive correlation (Spearman's p = 1.0, P < 0.0001) between the change in prevalence in juvenile cats and the change in prevalence in finishing pigs. The seropositivity rate (MAT > or = 1:25) in mice among all farms decreased from 4% in 1992-1993 to 0% in 1996. The mean prevalence of T. gondii tissue cyst isolation for mice on all farms decreased from 1.1% in 1994, to 0.8% in 1995, and to 0.5% in 1996. The results of this study suggest that the reduced exposure of pigs to T. gondii was due to the administration of the T. gondii vaccine to cats.  相似文献

Intensive surveys for Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm were carried out in two villages in Phang Nga Province, southern Thailand, in order to measure prevalence, estimate incidence and determine the relation between intensity of infection and morbidity before and after chemotherapy. The study populations were a small upland village community (Nai Tone) and a grade school in a small coastal village (Boh Saen). About half of the Nai Tone villagers were given a broad spectrum antihelminthic (albendazole), and the Boh Saen students were all treated successively with three drugs: piperazine citrate to treat for Ascaris, pyrantel pamoate to treat for hookworm, and mebendazole to treat for Trichuris. Stool examinations were made using the quick Kato smear technique, questionnaires were administered concerning a variety of possible symptoms, and anthropometric and blood biochemical parameters were measured both before and after treatment. The prevalence of Ascaris was 31.0 and 22.6%, hookworm was 89.1 and 88.0% and Trichuris was 59.7 and 77.8% in the Nai Tone and Boh Saen study populations, respectively. Average intensity of Ascaris was highest in the 0-9 year age class (greater than 32,000 epg) in Nai Tone Village. Hookworm intensity of infection was higher in males than in females in all age classes, and in Nai Tone Village at least 25% of males and 20% of females had 8000 or more epg of faeces. Trichuris intensity of infection was highest between 5 and 10 years of age in both populations. The only signs or symptoms showing a significant (P less than 0.05) difference between high and low classes of intensity of infection and a significant improvement (P less than 0.01) after drug treatment, were headache and flatulance in the case of hookworm infection in Boh Saen School. The presence of multiple infections made testing of hypotheses concerning particular parasite species difficult.  相似文献

This study was designed to: 1) characterize the effect of ovulation-inducing factor (OIF) on pituitary LH secretion in ovariectomized (OVX) llamas; and 2) determine the effect of OIF on LH secretion in OVX llamas pretreated with estradiol-17β (E-17β) or estradiol benzoate (EB). In Experiment 1, intact and OVX llamas (n = 5 or 6 per group) were assigned to a two by two factorial design: 1) Intact llamas treated with 1 mL of phosphate buffered saline (PBS); 2) Intact llamas treated with 1 mg of purified OIF; 3) OVX llamas treated with 1 mL of PBS; or 4) OVX llamas treated with 1 mg of purified OIF. In Experiment 2, intact and OVX llamas (n = 5 or 6 per group) were randomly assigned to the following groups: 1) Intact llamas treated with 1 mg of purified OIF; 2) OVX llamas treated with 1.0 mL of PBS; 3) OVX llamas treated with 1.0 mg of purified OIF; 4) OVX llamas primed with E-17β, followed by 1.0 mg of purified OIF. Experiment 3 was similar as described for Experiment 2, except that priming was done with EB. In Experiment 1, animal category by treatment and animal category by treatment by time interactions tended (P = 0.08) to affect LH concentration. The effect of OIF on LH released was partly restored (P < 0.05), to the values observed for the intact OIF-treated females, when OVX llamas were primed with E-17β or BE (Experiments 2 and 3). We concluded that peripheral estradiol concentrations in llamas partially modulates the effect of OIF on pituitary LH secretion; however, other ovarian factor(s) could also participate in this modulatory action.  相似文献

The secretory patterns of progesterone in relation to concentrations of 15-ketodihydro-PGF(2alpha) (PGFM) during the period of luteolysis or of maternal recognition of pregnancy were determined in the blood of llamas mated either with an intact or a vasectomized male. The ability of flunixin meglumine (FM) to postpone luteolysis in non-pregnant llamas was investigated by injecting the drug intravenously every 6 h at a dose of 2.2 mg/kg from days 6 to 12 post-copulation into a group of non-pregnant llamas. A pulsatile pattern of prostaglandin release was recorded during luteolysis in non-pregnant llamas, giving further support to the hypothesis that PGF(2alpha) is the luteolytic agent in llamas. The mean number of peaks per animal rose from 0.3 on day 7 to 3.8 on day 10 and then declined to 1.1 on day 12 with corresponding mean peak amplitude changing from 465 to 1234 and 566 pmol l(-1), respectively. In pregnant llamas, prostaglandin pulsatile release also occurred. The mean number of peaks per animal rose from 0.4 on day 7 to 0.8 on day 10 and then declined to 0.2 on day 11 and 0.6 on day 12, with corresponding mean peak amplitude changing from 494 to 676, 388 and 547 pmol l(-1), respectively. The transient decrease and subsequent recovery in progesterone concentrations was observed to occur in connection with prostaglandin release during early pregnancy. Oestradiol-17beta plasma peak concentrations attained after luteolysis were significantly higher than those recorded in early pregnant animals (around 30 pmol l(-1) and ll pmol l(-1)). Concentrations of PGFM decreased rapidly after the first administration of FM and remained low throughout the first 2 days of treatment. Thereafter, pulsatile release of prostaglandins started, and luteolysis proceeded; but a delay of 1-1.5 days in the progesterone decline was observed. Thus, it might be suggested that a higher dose and/or a more intensive injection schedule is required in llamas than in other ruminants to prevent luteolysis.  相似文献

The vicu?a (Vicugna vicugna; Miller, 1924) is a conservation success story, having recovered from near extinction in the 1960s to current population levels estimated at 275,000. However, lack of information about its demographic history and genetic diversity has limited both our understanding of its recovery and the development of science-based conservation measures. To examine the evolution and recent demographic history of the vicu?a across its current range and to assess its genetic variation and population structure, we sequenced mitochondrial DNA from the control region (CR) for 261 individuals from 29 populations across Peru, Chile and Argentina. Our results suggest that populations currently designated as Vicugna vicugna vicugna and Vicugna vicugna mensalis comprise separate mitochondrial lineages. The current population distribution appears to be the result of a recent demographic expansion associated with the last major glacial event of the Pleistocene in the northern (18 to 22 degrees S) dry Andes 14-12,000 years ago and the establishment of an extremely arid belt known as the 'Dry Diagonal' to 29 degrees S. Within the Dry Diagonal, small populations of V. v. vicugna appear to have survived showing the genetic signature of demographic isolation, whereas to the north V. v. mensalis populations underwent a rapid demographic expansion before recent anthropogenic impacts.  相似文献

Species representation and seasonality of adult sawflies (Symphyta) were studied using Malaise traps at three submontane study sites (Hriňová — HR, Mošovce — MO and Štefanová — ŠT) in the Western Carpathians (Central Slovakia). One trap was operated at each study site continuously during the growing season, in MO in 1992, in HR in 1995 and in ŠT in 1996. A total of 9,281 adults representing 244 species in 9 families were collected. Very rich sawfly assemblages were found. The highest species richness was in MO (181 species), followed by ŠT (153 species) and HR (118 species). Pseudodineura fuscula was recorded from Slovakia for the first time. Adults were present in traps from the end of April through the first half of October. Most species occurred from the second half of May through the first half of June and finished flight activity by the end of June. Seasonal flight activities of the 16 most abundant species are analysed and discussed.  相似文献

Sexual ornaments may enable females to discriminate amongst potential mates and choose those having either fewer parasites, or those which are more immunocompetent, or better able to cope with parasites. Tetraonid birds exhibit supra-orbital combs that function in both intra-sexual competition and mate choice. Through a correlative and experimental approach we investigated whether comb size of male red grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus was related to infection intensity by their main parasite, the gastro intestinal nematode Trichostrongylus tenuis , and to immune function. We first looked at the relationships between immune function, parasite infection and condition. We found that spleen mass, an indirect measure of immune response, correlated positively with T. tenuis load, and negatively with condition. Cell-mediated immunity, a measure of immune defence, correlated positively with condition, and although not significantly related to T. tenuis load, increased when nematode parasites were experimentally reduced. Secondly, we investigated whether comb size was related to condition, T. tenuis load or immune function. Comb size was not significantly related to T. tenuis infection and did not change significantly after nematode parasite removal. However, males with bigger combs were in better condition, had a lighter spleen, a lighter spleen than expected from their T. tenuis load and had greater cell-mediated immunity. The findings suggest that comb size relates to immune function rather than T. tenuis parasite infection intensity. Males with bigger combs are likely to be of higher phenotypic quality because they are more immunocompetent and might be better able to cope with the detrimental effects of parasites.  相似文献

Three populations of Tayloria tenuis (Splachnaceae) growing on three isolated cattle droppings in coniferous forests of the Eastern Pyrenees were sampled by permanent grids through three years. Each population was initially in a different stage of the dung colonization process. At first, T. tenuis developed a conspicuous protonema on the dropping surface. After one or two years, the moss completed development and fruited abundantly. Eventually, the populations were covered by larger pleurocarpous mosses, which were common on the forest soil.
There were important differences between the two stages of development of the T. tenuis gametophyte: the protonema stage exhibited high mortality but rapidly covered nearly all the free surface of the dropping. Afterwards, the gametophore stage established more permanently.
Pleurocarpous mosses growing over Tayloria tenuis gametophores produced changes in the vegetative and reproductive pattern of this species. Tayloria tenuis disappeared gradually from the places covered by pleurocarps, although these larger species exhibited high rates of mortality at a micro-scale level.  相似文献
