SUMMARY 1. Trays of gravel were implanted for 24 h periods in several chalk streams. The trays were variously modified to monitor colonization from different sources, particularly drift (D), other downstream movements (DSM), upstream movements (USM), and all sources combined (ALL).
2. The abundance of invertebrates in the streams was high (maximum of 717 per 0.04 m2) and colonization of the trays was extensive, especially by Gammarus pulex , the predominant species in all but one of the streams (maximum number of individuals of G. pulex per tray: for D, 473; for DSM, 462; tor USM, 286; and tor ALL, 639). In some cases benthic densities were achieved in the trays in the 24 h exposure period, and in most cases any one source of colonization could provide benthic densities in a few days.
3. Patterns of movement differed between species, between size classes of G. pulex , and between sites for particular species. No one source of colonization could be regarded as generally predominant although downstream movements in total (D + DSM) usually far exceeded USM. DSM was usually an important source of colonization.
4. The extent and direction of movement appeared to be determined by local factors and were explained in terms of the high densities of invertebrates and the current and substratum characteristics of each site.
5. Estimates of the relative importance of different sources of colonization varied greatly according to the criteria used in determining proportions.  相似文献

A field experiment was performed in a New Mexico (U.S.A.) stream to investigate the relation between size and diversity of substrate and numbers and diversity of colonizing insects. Baskets with either small gravel, large gravel, or a 1 : 1 mixture of the two sizes were placed in a riffle area and colonization was monitored for 19 days.Colonization was rapid, and both total number of individuals and number of species colonizing the substrates had stopped increasing by the end of the experiment. Fewer individuals colonized baskets downstream, suggesting that the drift is a major source of insect colonists. Small substrate supported more individuals and more species than the larger stones. Total number of individuals and the number of species on the mixed substrate were between numbers on small and large substrate. These results do not support previous generalizations on the relation between substrate size and complexity and the structure of invertebrate communities in streams. Results of the study are compared with the findings of recent experimental studies and it is suggested that earlier generalizations on the role of substrate size and complexity need to be reexamined.Order of authors was determined by the flip of a coin. SUMMARY 1. Experiments using implanted substrata were conducted in Yuccabine Creek, a n upland stream in north-eastern Australia which exhibits a strong seasonal pattern of discharge and temperature. The implanted substrata were either set in the stream bed or were raised in the water column. Three experiments were run, at different times of the year.
2. Colonization rate was dependent on benthic abundance, mobility of the fauna and distribution of resources. The rates on embedded trays were similar in the late wet season and mid dry season, but colonization rate in the late dry season was greater.
3. Drift alone could have accounted for all colonization in the late wet season, 63% of colonization in the mid dry season and less (unmeasured) in the late dry season. Drift acts to disperse early instars to patches of suitable habitat after the summer wet-season peak in reproduction.
4. Following the wet season, stream discharge decreases, benthic abundance increases, resources become more concentrated, and movements of animals in contact with the substratum play an increasingly important role in colonization.  相似文献

1. The Rotifera assemblage inhabiting the streambed surface and the hyporheic zone of a gravel stream was investigated between October 1991 and October 1992. Forty-two species of Monogononta and 27 of Bdelloidea were identified. Within these two classes, dominant species differed between the surface and the hyporheic zone. At the streambed surface, the abundance of monogonont rotifers showed a seasonal pattern with significantly higher densities in pools, whereas bdelloids showed no clear temporal trend and did not differ significantly among sites. In the hyporheic zone, the depth distribution differed among the two rotifer groups, bdelloids occurred in highest densities between 0 and 30 cm sediment depth, while monogononts were most abundant at greater depths.
2. Species composition differed greatly between successive sampling dates (min. 5 to max. 26 days) at both the streambed surface and the hyporheos. At the streambed surface and in the shallow hyporheos a significantly higher percentage of species was replaced in riffles than in pools.
3. Few measured hydrophysical variables were associated with the Rotifera assemblage structure. At the streambed surface, species richness was negatively correlated with water temperature and substratum heterogeneity, and Monogononta rotifer densities declined with water depth and substratum roughness.
4. Permutation tests carried out on temporal serial correlations showed that, at riffle sites at the streambed surface, bdelloid rotifer densities, rotifer species richness and diversity did not differ significantly from a temporal, near-random pattern. The hyporheic rotifer assemblage followed similar near-random patterns.  相似文献

Hydrodynamically unbiased colonization trays were deployed for 6 months (Oct. 2000 to April 2001) on the northern California margin (Eel R. region; 525 m) to examine macrofaunal colonization rates at methane seeps. The influence of sulfide on recruitment and survival was examined by deploying sediments with and without sulfide added; effect of seep proximity was evaluated by placing trays inside and outside seeps. The trays contained a two-layer system mimicking vesicomyid clam bed habitat geochemistry, with 8-9 mM sulfide in a lower agar layer at the start of the experiment. After 6 month on the seabed, the lower agar layer contained 2-4 mM H2S. We observed rapid macrofaunal colonization equivalent to 50% of initial non-seep ambient densities. There was no difference in total colonizer densities, number of species, or rarefaction diversity among 3 treatments: (1) controls (no sulfide added) placed outside seeps, (2) trays with sulfide added placed outside seeps and (3) trays with sulfide added placed inside seep patches. Colonization trays with sulfide placed at seeps had different species composition from trays without sulfide place outside seeps; there were more amphipods (non-ampeliscid) and cumaceans in the seep/sulfide treatment and more nemerteans, Nephtys cornuta and tanaids in the non-seep/no-sulfide treatment. Outside seeps, annelids comprised < 15% of tray colonists; within seep patches, annelids comprised 5 of the top 10 dominant colonizing taxa (24% of the total). The polychaetes Mediomastus sp., Aphelochaeta sp., Paraonidae sp., and Nerillidae sp. exhibited significantly higher densities in sulfide additions. Tanaids, echinoderms, and N. cornuta exhibited sulfide avoidance. At least 6 dorvilleid polychaete species colonized the experiments. Of these, 4 species occurred exclusively in trays with sulfide added and 80% of all dorvilleid individuals were found in trays with sulfide placed inside seep sediments. Counts of large sulfur bacterial filaments were positively correlated with maximum sulfide concentration in each tray, and with proximity of sulfide to the sediment surface. However, total macrofaunal densities were not correlated with tray sulfide concentrations. As a group, tray assemblages achieved some but not all characteristics of ambient seep assemblages after 6-month exposure on the sea floor. Distinctive colonization patterns at methane seeps contribute to the dynamic mosaic of habitat patches that characterize the eastern Pacific continental margin.Overall, proximity of seep habitats had at least as great an influence on macrofaunal colonization as tray sulfide concentrations. Taxa characteristic of seep sediments were more likely to settle into trays placed inside rather than outside seep patches. Whether this is due to limited dispersal ability or local geochemical cues remains to be determined.  相似文献

As part of a detailed study on the colonization of newly created and isolated pools by cladocerans, the community build-up of a pool near the Belgian coast was studied. Three large daphniid species managed to colonize this new habitat during the first year of its existence. The first colonizing species was Daphnia atkinsoni, a species very rare to the cladoceran fauna of Northwestern Europe and new to the Belgian fauna. Although the occurrence of Daphnia atkinsoni is striking, the colonization of the new habitat can be explained by short-range dispersal of resting eggs, as all three cladoceran species are present in waterbodies in the immediate proximity (0.5 km) of the new pool. It is hypothesized that the occurrence of Daphnia atkinsoni in the region is related to long-range dispersal of resting eggs associated with wintering geese, which are very abundant in the specific region. %  相似文献

1. The effect of an exotic, burrowing bivalve ( Corbicula fluminea ) on the benthic fauna of a sandy-bottomed stream was assessed by field and laboratory experiments. Corbicula differs from other freshwater, non-native bivalves in that it both filter- and pedal-feeds and thus has the potential to influence the streambed community in different ways.
2. In the field, cages were used to vary the abundance of Corbicula in the streambed. Increasing abundance of Corbicula was negatively associated with the abundance of benthic bacteria and flagellates but had no apparent effect on other protists or meiofauna.
3. In the laboratory, we compared the effect of Corbicula on the benthic community when the bivalves were able both to filter- and pedal-feed with that when they were able only to filter-feed. Bivalves restricted to filter-feeding were placed in sediment lacking benthic fauna and organic matter, then the benthos in nearby natural sediment was compared with the community present when Corbicula was able to move freely through the sediment and both to filter- and pedal-feed. Corbicula able to pedal-feed were again associated with a decreased abundance of benthic flagellates and bacteria, as well as diatoms.  相似文献

1. The patterns of colonization of littoral benthos onto hard substrata on an exposed and a sheltered shore of Lake Purrumbete in Victoria, Australia, and the riffles of its outflow stream (Curdies River) were examined experimentally in winter and summer. The common taxa in the lake (gastropods, amphipods, isopods, planarians, ostracods) also occurred in the stream, although they were not abundant. The stream fauna was dominated by insects. 2. Defaunated half-bricks were sampled at each of three sites at the three different locations (exposed shore, sheltered shore, stream) in winter and summer at weekly or biweekly intervals, with natural stones also being sampled during the colonization period. Colonization patterns of individual taxa which occurred in both the lake and stream, and stream-only taxa, were compared using ANOVA, and the changes in the assemblage through time and between locations were analysed with non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and analysis of similarities (ANOSIM). 3. Colonization in the lake was very rapid, with species richness and assemblage composition on bricks after just one day matching that of natural stones. Colonization in the stream was slower, the assemblage composition not matching natural stones after 42 days in winter but being comparable after 28 days in summer. There was considerable species turnover during colonization in the stream, but little turnover in the lake, with most common taxa back after one day. There was little difference between the two lake shores in colonization patterns. 4. Taxa that occurred in both lake and stream showed broadly similar patterns of colonization, with early occupancy at high densities. In contrast, stream insects showed a variety of colonization strategies. 5. These results indicate that rates and patterns of colonization on to hard substrata are quite different in Lake Purrumbete compared with its outflowing stream. The rapid colonization in this lake indicates great mobility for much of the fauna on hard substrata, possibly by swimming, benthic crawling or passive drift (even attached to floating vegetation). This may be an appropriate strategy in lake littoral zones where the amount of inhabitable hard substrata and accompanying food resources may be limited.  相似文献

Experiments on the colonization by macroinvertebrates of stones were performed in the Acheron and Toorongo Rivers, two upland rivers in south-eastern Australia. The three experiments were each about one month in duration. In the first experiment — Acheron I — and the third experiment — Toorongo — river stones were used. In the Acheron II experiment both river stones and quarry stones were used.The number of colonizing species with time in the Acheron I and Toorongo experiments fitted a logarithmic model with the colonization and elimination (extinction) rates both declining with time. The population densities of the total animals and of most of the common species fitted the power model (linear model on logarithmically transformed axes). In the Acheron II experiment the major difference between the colonization of river stones and quarry stones was the low numbers of scrapers on the quarry stones. The colonization of the stones in Acheron I and Toorongo by the various functional feeding groups is described. The colonization of stones in streams is a rapid process suggesting that the stream stone assemblage has a high resilience — an attribute of deterministic communities.  相似文献

1 This study examines the abundance and distribution of grassland plant species in particular relation to features affecting colonization. Seed production (inversely related to seed size) and recruitment success (positively related) affect colonization ability, suggesting that seed size can be used as a key trait.
2 Data on seed size, dispersal mode, life form, geographical range size and abundance were gathered for 81 grassland plant species in a field study area in Sweden. Seed production and plant size were estimated for 69 of these species. Analyses were performed both across species, with species treated as independent data points, and for 43 'phylogenetically independent contrasts'.
3 The cross-species analyses suggested that local abundance was related to life forms but not dispersal or plant size. Perennials were generally most abundant, as were clonal species. If abundance reflects colonization we predicted that species with intermediately sized seeds (or intermediate seed production) would be most abundant, and this was supported by the phylogenetic contrast but not by cross-species analyses. In the former analysis, a high abundance of species was significantly associated with a small seed size deviation (and seed number deviation) from the median values of these traits in the community.
4 Local abundance, seed production and seed size deviation from the community median value were positively related to geographical range size in the cross-species analysis, but no relationships were seen in the phylogenetic contrast analysis.
5 We conclude that colonization processes do have a significant influence on abundance patterns in grasslands. Seed size is a key trait for colonizing ability, and the effects of the trade-off of seed size vs. seed number must be considered. No single mechanism can be identified that influences both abundance and geographical distribution range.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Floods are an important mechanism of disturbance operating in streams that can markedly influence the abundance and diversity of benthic fauna. In upland streams many studies cite the scouring effects of fine transported sediments as a potential source of disturbance to the biota during spates, but few studies have sought to test this hypothesis critically.
2. Here we used a series of eight artificial streams to test whether high suspended-sediment concentrations influenced the short-term response of benthic invertebrate fauna to increases in flow. In an experiment designed to simulate a small spate, flow and sediment loads were each manipulated to examine their independent and interactive effects. Benthic invertebrates were sampled before and after the manipulation, and drift samples were taken at regular intervals during the experiment. The experiment was repeated twice, once at the end of winter (June, 1998), and once in summer (February, 1999).
3. Flow increases caused large increases in the number and diversity of drifting animals, and significant declines in the numbers and diversity of organisms found in benthic samples, but these declines were apparently not affected by the addition of fine sediment. The addition of sediment alone had little effect on the fauna. These results were consistent across both experiments.
4. The results suggest that flow increases alone can disturb benthic fauna, and that neither substrate movement nor suspended sediment increases are necessary for floods and spates to disturb the benthic assemblage. However, as argued elsewhere, the effects of flow increases are likely to be contingent upon the presence or absence of local flow refugia, which can allow animals to escape the shear forces that would otherwise remove them from the surface or interstitial areas of the streambed.  相似文献

Drop stones with lithophyllic macrofauna from Belgica Bank, Greenland Sea (79–81°N and 5–17°W) were collected during the Polarstern cruise in August 2000. The investigation focussed on species richness, diversity, abundance, and interactions of organisms colonizing rocks. On 101 stones collected by 10 dredges from nine sites, 113 taxa (58 genera, 38 families, 12 orders and 8 phyla) were recognized. Among the most abundant groups of organisms were foraminiferans, bryozoans and polychaetes, while the least abundant were anthozoans and ascidians. Abundance ranged from 1239 to 11,383 individuals m−2 of rock surface area. Bryozoans were the most species-rich group, while anthozoans and ascidians were represented by the least number of species. Colonization occurred at various topographical levels and was classified into two categories. Stones were classified as primary space and were colonized by erect membranous, erect flexible, erect rigid, and flat encrusting organisms. The second level of colonization by epibionts occurred on erect forms of organisms (e.g. erect bryozoans) and was classified as a secondary space. Species composition and abundance between faunal assemblages of primary and secondary space differed greatly. Colonization occurred only on the top of stones and was considered a special adaptation to avoid burial by sedimentation and to enhance food supply. Only 3% of recruits were involved in any competitive interactions. Competition was considered to be of minor importance in structuring lithophyllic assemblages.  相似文献

1. Egg parasitoids in the genus Anagrus (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) are important mortality factors for grape leafhoppers ( Erythroneura elegantula ; Homoptera: Cicadellidae) in California vineyards, yet must overwinter in habitats external to these vineyards. Existing evidence suggests that French prune trees, which harbour the overwintering host Edwardsiana prunicola , planted adjacent to vineyards may enhance early-season abundance of Anagrus.
2. Anagrus overwintering in French prune tree refuges were labelled with the trace element rubidium in four separate experiments. Rubidium-labelled Anagrus were captured in adjacent vineyards in two of the experiments, confirming that French prune trees contribute to early-season Anagrus populations. Anagrus from refuges were captured at the most distant sampling positions, 100 m from refuges.
3. Use of rare element labelling has, for the first time, enabled the relative contribution of different sources to early-season colonization by this parasitoid to be quantified. Refuges contributed 1% and 34% of Anagrus colonizing two of the experimental vineyards, respectively. The remainder originated from overwintering habitats external to the French prune/vineyard system.
4. The spatial patterns of Anagrus originating from external overwintering habitats suggest that the French prune trees are generating a 'windbreak effect'. Anagrus dispersing within the windstream colonized vineyards at a higher-than-average rate immediately downwind of refuges.
5. The amount of colonization by Anagrus from external overwintering habitats was apparently related to the distance to presumed overwintering habitats. These findings demonstrate that both the number of natural enemies emerging from a refuge and the composition of the surrounding landscape are important in determining the impact of local, small-scale habitat manipulations.  相似文献

Abstract

The distribution, abundance, and life histories of benthic invertebrates were investigated in a small, Nothofagus forest stream in North Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand. The fauna was dominated by Trichoptera and Plecoptera; Mollusca and fish were absent. Large particle detritivores and scrapers were the predominant functional groups found. Larval Philopotamidae (Trichoptera) were the only abundant filter feeders. Nymphs of the stonefly Spaniocerca zelandica and of mayflies, Deleatidium spp., were the most abundant animals on plant detritus; Deleatidium spp. were abundant on stones also. The distribution of invertebrates in riffles, loose stones, pools, and plunge pools was examined using mesh colonisation trays lifted in September, November, February, and May after respectively 88, 69, 98, and 94 days in situ. Most species were widely distributed, and sample densities of the more abundant insect species showed weak positive correlations with the biomass of detritus present in trays in most months. The turbellarian Neppia montana was overrepresented in trays compared with stream samples, but the relative abundance of most other species appeared to be similar to that on the stream bed. A large amount of silt accumulated in trays during a heavy flood, and was colonised mainly by the oligochaete Eiseniella tetraedra. Information on the life histories of 15 species of Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, and Coleoptera was obtained from a 1-year monthly sampling programme, in which 36 taxa were distinguished, and from collections of adult insects made over a 3–4-year period. Most species had poorly synchronised life histories, in that a wide size range was apparent among individuals in most months. Eight species emerged in at least 4 months; S. zelandica and the philopotamid Hydrobiosella stenocerca were taken in 8 and 9 months respectively.  相似文献

What allows some species to successfully colonize a novel environment while others fail? Numerous studies in invasion biology have sought to answer this question, but those studies have tended to focus on traits of species or individuals (e.g. body size, seed size, seed number), and these traits have largely been found to be weak predictors of invasion success. However, characteristics of colonizing populations (e.g. genetic diversity, density, age structure) might also be important for successful establishment, as the authors of a study published in this issue of Molecular Ecology show ( Crawford & Whitney 2010 ). By experimentally manipulating the density and genetic diversity of colonizing populations of Arabidopsis thaliana, the authors found that genetic diversity, but not population density, increased colonization success. Importantly, the effects of genetic diversity on colonization success were both additive and non‐additive, suggesting that traits associated with particular genotypes and complimentarity among genotypes contribute to colonization success. This research highlights the importance of considering within‐species variation and characteristics of entire populations in predicting colonization success.  相似文献

Diel changes in the density of the fauna of stones and of drift were investigated in the Toorongo River, an upland river of southern Australia. The densities of the ten most common taxa and of the total fauna in the drift and on the stones were negatively correlated, with 16 out of 33 cases being significant (p < 0.05). Five of the ten most common taxa displayed a general trend of reaching day-time peaks in the benthos (11 out of 15 cases) and night-time peaks in the drift (10 out of 15 cases). The total density on the stones reached a significant peak in the day-time while the total drift density peaked at night.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Colonization of nutrient-diffusing substrata by periphyton and invertebrates was investigated at forested and open sites in a small, mountain stream and a spring in the South Island of New Zealand.
2. Substrata had colonization surfaces made from 100μm mesh plankton netting that enabled algal assemblages to be removed intact for scanning electron microscopy. They also allowed small volumes of solvent to be used for the extraction of photosynthetic pigments.
3. At all sites, periphyton assemblages were dominated by species of Achnanthes, Cocconeis and Gomphonema , and except in the forest in winter, periphyton biomass was always greater on enriched (N + P added) than control substrata.
4. Invertebrates colonizing diffusion substrata were principally larval Chironomidae (Orthocladiinac). No larvae were present in winter, but in three spring and summer trials mean larval densities were higher on nutrient-enriched than control substrata at all sites.
5. The inclusion of an insecticide Malathion in diffusion substrata, reduced insect colonization at open and forested sites. After 28 days, no concurrent increases in algal pigment concentration were observed on nutrienl-enriched or control substrata at the forested site. However, pigment concentrations were higher on substrata incorporating Malathion at the open site suggesting that algal standing crop was depressed by the activities of grazers.  相似文献

A study of the benthic invertebrate community inhabiting a small, foothill trout stream in the Rocky Mountains of Idaho was conducted over a two-year period. Monthly Hess samples and short-term experiments using substratum-filled trays were used to describe the spatial dispersion of the benthos and to examine the response of invertebrate populations to substratum and current. A method was devised for measuring available surface area which involved coating individual stones with latex and measuring the area of the print resulting from inking the impression left on the latex mold.The dispersion of all populations was clumped throughout the year. Alteration of the cross-sectional pattern of current velocity and stream bed composition changed the pattern of distribution but not the extent of clumping. Collections made in areas of depositing and eroding substrata revealed a more diverse fauna in the latter. Most groups of organisms found in the riffle were scarcer in the pools or absent from them. The pool fauna contained no important additions over those found in the riffles.After a year's study of invertebrate populations in an otherwise undisturbed riffle, the substratum was altered and the flow made more uniform; an increase in the abundance of most of the benthic invertebrates followed. No single factor was responsible for the increase, but the change in substratum size and degree of compaction accounted for most of the change. Interpretation of the results was aided by findings from experiments using substratum-filled trays.Two series of stream experiments using the trays were conducted: one to test the relative importance of current and substratum and the other to test the effect of particle size on the distribution of the benthic fauna. In the first series, placement of trays of stones in a pool resulted in an increase in numbers of some but not all of the invertebrates over numbers usually occurring in the pool. Trays filled with stones and placed in a riffle supported fewer animals than found on the adjacent stream bed but more than in the pool. Variations are attributed to differences in current velocity and amounts of imported organic and inorganic debris. Three different relationships of population numbers to current velocity were found for different members of the community (direct, indirect, and parabolic) over the range of 10 to 60 cm/sec. The second series of experiments consisted of two sets of trays filled with stones of medium or large pebbles, respectively. Nine taxa, as well as all of the combined taxa, showed a preference for trays of small stones over the natural stream bed. A few taxa were noticeably more abundant on the small substratum than on the large but most of the fauna showed only slight increases in numbers or remained constant on the two substrata. Only three taxa showed a direct relation of numbers to total surface area presented by the stones.Number and kinds of organisms found in trays filled with a uniform size of substratum did not correspond to those taken in Hess samples from the natural stream bed. This has important implications in terms of currently recommended pollution monitoring techniques. However, it is suggested that if the substratum composition of the trays more nearly matched that of the stream, the correspondence would be much better. The results of the present study also throw considerable doubt on the adequacy of generalizations derived from earlier studies of responses to substratum size and suggest several reasons for reevaluating current ideas regarding the influence of substratum on invertebrate distribution.  相似文献

Twenty-five patches (1 m2) of natural stream substratum in the Acheron River, Victoria, were physically disturbed by kicking and raking during winter 1986 and summer 1987. The macroinvertebrate composition of these disturbed patches was examined at various times over the following 71 days, and compared with adjacent undisturbed control patches sampled concurrently. The disturbance did not alter the particle-size distribution (> 150 μm) of the disturbed patches. Organic material was reduced in the disturbed patches by about 70% in each season, but returned to control levels within 21 days in winter and 8 days in summer. The total number of species, and the density of species and individuals were all significantly reduced by the disturbance. Recovery of species density was complete after 21 days during winter and 8 days during summer, and the density of individuals recovered after 71 days during winter and 8 days during summer. The differences were due to the slower colonization rate of Chironomidae in winter, either because of a lower drift rate, or a slower recovery of detritus in winter. Individual species showed variations in colonization patterns, most increasing steadily at various rates, with some declining after an initial rapid increase (e.g. Baetis pp.). In the latter case, the density changes were mirrored in the control patches, emphasizing the need to take control samples concurrently with experimental samples. In each season, the species remaining immediately following the disturbance, and those subsequently colonizing the disturbed patches were in the same rank order (Spearman Rank correlation) as their occurrence in the control patches, suggesting that no taxa were differentially affected by the treatment. No evidence was found to allow the application of the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis to explain species diversity at the scale of this study. It appears that current hypotheses developed to explain the relationship between diversity and disturbance in sessile communities do not apply to highly mobile communities in streams.  相似文献

1. Data from the literature were used to document colonization patterns by introduced freshwater fishes in 125 drainages across temperate North America. We analysed this data set to quantify susceptibility to invasion, success of the invaders and changes in species richness.
2. Drainages with a high number of impoundments, large basin area and low native species diversity had the greatest number of introduced species. Those drainages containing few native fishes exhibited great variation in the number of invaders, while waters with a rich native fauna contained few introduced species. However, this pattern did not differ significantly from random simulations because the pool of potential invaders is greater for drainages with low species richness.
3. In most drainages, there were more introduced than imperilled or extirpated species, suggesting that invaders tend to increase overall species richness.
4. These patterns suggest that North American fish communities are not saturated with species, but instead, are capable of supporting higher levels of diversity if the pool of potential colonists and the rate of colonization from that pool is increased.  相似文献
