Neue melampolide und cis,cis-germacranolide aus vertretern der subtribus melampodiinae

The investigation of four South American species of the tribe Heliantheae afforded in addition to known compounds 14 new sesquiterpene lactones, mostly belonging to the melampolides, but four being further examples of cis,cis-germacranolides. The stereochemistry is established by intensive ¹H-NMR studies and some chemical transformations. Some of the new lactones were only obtainable as inseparable mixtures of 2-methylbutyric and isovaleric esters. Furthermore a new acetylenic aldehyde was isolated. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed especially with regard to the position of the genus Smallanthus.     

A new type of germacranolide from Vernonia species

From several South African Vernonia species, a considerable number of sesquiterpene lactones has been isolated. Together with known compounds, seven members of a new type with an enol lactone ring have been found, their structures being elucidated by spectroscopic methods and some chemical transformations. Furthermore two new derivatives of costunolide are present in two species, and three new guaianolides have been found. From some species, however, no lactones could be isolated. Together with a new bisabolene derivative, a known eremophilone has been isolated, probably for the first time, from a member of the tribe Vernonieae.     

Neue sesquiterpenlactone und thymol-derivate aus Inula-arten

The investigation of three Inula species affords, besides known compounds, two new sesquiterpene lactones and two new thymol derivatives. The chemotaxonomic situation in this genus is still very complicated.     

New sesquiterpene lactones from Inula species

An investigation of Inula helenium, I. royleana, I. salicina and I. bifrons afforded in addition to known sesquiterpene lactones 20 new lactones, the eudesmanolides 3, 6 and 8–12, the germacranolides 14–18 and 20–22, the guaianolides 23 and 25, the pseudoguaianolide 26, the xanthanolides 28 and 32 and the cyclopropane analogue 30. Structures and configurations of these new compounds were established by extensive PMR studies and by some chemical transformations. Some of the investigated species contain besides the widely distributed pentaynene 33 several known thymol derivatives together with a new one (40).     

Seven guaianolides from Eupatorium chinense

Two allyl hydroperoxy guaianolide sesquiterpene lactones (peroxyeupahakonin-A and -B) and five new guaianolides (eupahakonin-A and -B, eupahakonenin-A and -B, and eupahakonesin) were isolated from E. chinense and characterized. The allyl hydroperoxy sesquiterpene lactones were characterized by spectral and chemical methods. They were prepared chemically by photosensitized oxygenation of eupahakonin-A.     

Zwei neue sesquiterpenlactone und eine neue sesquiterpensäure aus Helenium puberulum

The reinvestigation of Helenium puberulum afforded in addition to known compounds two new sesquiterpene lactones, desacetyl-isobigelovin and a guaianolide, and an anomalic sesquiterpene hydroxy acid. The structures are elucidated by spectroscopic methods. Chemotaxonomic aspects are discussed briefly.     

Allenic germacranolides,bourbonene derived lactones and other constituents from Vernonia species

An investigation of seven Vernonia species, mainly from northern Brazil, afforded in addition to known compounds three new unusual sesquiterpene lactones with an allenic group. Intensive NMR studies fully established the structures. Furthermore, two lactones derived from bourbonene, two new glaucolides, a new furansesquiterpene, a nerolidol derivative and two other sesquiterpenes derived from eudesmane were isolated. The biogenetic relationships of the sesquiterpene lactones present in Veronia species as well as the chemotaxonomic aspects are discussed.     

Neuartige sesquiterpenlactone und neue acetylenverbingen aus Athanasia-arten

The investigation of two further South African Athanasia-species afforded, in addition to known compounds, sixteen new ones, ten guaianolides, an eudesmanolide, three sesquiterpenes, a new enediynene and a phenylpropane derivative. The structures were elucidated by extensive NMR-studies. Three of the lactones are very unusual in having an endoperoxide bridge; their structures, however, were elucidated only indirectly. These further chemical results on Athanasia again add support to the idea that these species might be better placed in the genus Pentzia.     

Neue furanoeremophilane und weitere inhaltsstoffe aus südafrikanischen Senecio-arten

The investigation of further 27 South African and a few other Senecio species afforded in addition to known compounds 18 new furanoeremophilanes, most of them being cacalol derivatives, two new lactones, a new eudesmane derivative and four acyl pyrrole derivatives. The structures are elucidated by spectroscopic methods mainly. The chemical results on more than 140 species now available indicate much of chemotaxonomic interest. Together with the chemical data on related genera, the taxonomic situation of the subtribe Senecioninae is discussed in connection with the proposed new classification. The chemical data are in good agreement with this new arrangement.     

Weitere isocedren-derivate aus Trixis paradoxa

The investigation of two further species from the tribe Mutisieae afforded in addition to known compounds three new sesquiterpene lactones and two further sesquiterpene esters, all closely related to compounds isolated before from other Trixis species. The isolation of these new substances from Trixis further establishes the chemotaxonomic situation in the subtribe Nassauviinae. From the Dinoseris species, among others, 1β-hydroxyalantolactone was isolated, indicating a relationship to the subtribe Gochnatiinae.     

Neue sesquiterpene und acetylenverbindungen aus Cineraria-arten

The investigation of several members of the South African genus Cineraria affords, in addition to known compounds, several new eremophilene derivatives together with modified types all derived from a carbon skeleton where the 5-methyl has migrated to C-6. Some of these compounds are transformed to unusual enol lactones. Furthermore some derivatives of himachalene are present. All species also contain C₁₁-acetylenes, most of which are new. Senecio deltoideus also contains some of these compounds. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed.     

Sesquiterpenlactone und polyine aus der gattung Arctotis

The South African genus Arctotis contains two polyynes sometimes together with diterpenes and sesquiterpene lactones, four of which are new. The structures have been elucidated by spectroscopic methods.     

Neue sesquiterpenlactone aus Stokesia laevis

The investigation of Stokesia laevis afforded in addition to known compounds five new sesquiterpene lactones, four hirsutinolides and one guaianolide. The structures are very similar to those isolated from several Vernonia species. Since hirsutinolides have only been previously isolated from this latter genus, these results suggest that Stokesia may be closely related to Vernonia.     

Sesquiterpene lactones from Eremanthus species

The investigation of three Eremanthus species afforded, in addition to known compounds, several new sesquiterpenelactones, a cumambrin B isobutyrate, four lactones related to the eremantholides, two to zexbrevin and one to goyazensolide. Furthermore, a new coniferyl alcohol derivative was isolated. The overall picture of the genus is very uniform. The occurrence of eremanthine and germacranolides with a furanone ring seems to be especially typical.     

New germacranolides from Dicoma anomala

The aerial parts of D. anomala contain, besides known compounds, two new 7,8-germacranolides. The structures have been elucidated by spectroscopic methods. D. argyrophylla lacks lactones.     

Three new melampolide sesquiterpenes,polymatin A,B and C,from Polymnia maculata Cav. var. maculata

Three new melampolide type sesquiterpene lactones were isolated from Polymnia maculata Cav. var. maculata. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic and chemical means. Based on the presently available chemical data, the chemotaxonomic position of Polymnia within the subtribe is discussed.     

α-Humulene derivatives including a sesquiterpene acid with a rearranged carbon skeleton from Lychophorora columnaris

An investigation of Lychnophora columnaris afforded in addition to known compounds six new α-humulene derivatives and a rearranged sesquiterpene with a new carbon skeleton. These compounds and several sesquiterpene lactones isolated from this species seem to be of chemotaxonomic importance. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and a few chemical transformations including partial synthesis.     

Zoapatanolide A and B,two new heliangolides from Montanoa tomentosa

The re-investigation of Montanoa tomentosa afforded, in addition to known diterpenoids of the kaurene class, two new sesquiterpene lactones, zoapatanolide A and B, of the heliangolide type.     

Three bourbonenolides and other sesquiterpene lactones from two vernonia species

A re-investigation of V. arkansana afforded several new sesquiterpene lactones, three bourbonenolides, obviously closely related to those isolated from this plant previously, a glaucolide and a methoxy derivative most probably formed by fragmentation of the corresponding bourbonenolide. From V. profuga in addition to known lactones a new guaianolide was isolated. The biogenetic relationships of the Vernonia sesquiterpene lactones are discussed briefly.     

Types of sesquiterpenes from Artemisia douglasiana

Artemisia douglasiana afforded, in addition to known compounds, two new C₁₄-acetylenes, five longipinene derivatives, three nerolidol derivatives, a lactone and a ketone with a new carbon skeleton and lavendulol-2-methylbutyrate. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and some chemical transformations. The configurations of several oxo longipinene-7, 9-di- and 7, 8, 9-triesters isolated previously were corrected. The biogenesis of the new lactones is discussed briefly.
