The relationship between parturition date and lamb survival was investigated among individually marked bighorn ewes in south-western Alberta, Canada. Lambs were born from 17 May to 21 July. Most births occurred in the first two weeks of the lambing period. Lambs born in May enjoyed greater survival than lambs born in June and July. The viability of lambs born after 10 June was extremely low. Inadequate nutrition is suggested as the cause of greater mortality of lateborn lambs. Ewes that give birth late are at an earlier stage of lactation when forage quality declines and may not produce sufficient milk to ensure lamb survival. Their lambs have access to high-quality forage for a shortened period. The proportion of late lambs appeared to be correlated with ewe density in the winter range. 相似文献

Alpine, Angora and Nubian kids, 6–8 months old and weighing 15–25 kg were grazed on high quality (wheat) or low quality pasture (dormant bermudagrass) for 54 d to evaluate breed differences and metabolic responses. Each kid on the bermudagrass pasture also received daily 200 g of a 24% CP supplement to stimulate intake. Wheat pasture had an in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of 78 vs. 35% for the Bermuda pasture. Goats gained 50 g/d on wheat pasture vs. 10 g/d on Bermuda pasture (P<0.02). Angora kids gained the least weight on Bermuda (−8 g/d; P<0.05) and most on wheat pasture (62 g/d; P<0.05). Mohair production was greater for Angora goats on wheat pasture compared to those on Bermuda pastures (9.9 vs. 6.2 g/100 cm2; P<0.05). Angora goats on Bermuda pastures had elevated levels of NEFA and plasma ammonia, and reduced levels of plasma urea N, consistent with catabolism of body tissue stores. Angora goats tended to have lower concentration of rumen VFA and ammonia. Angora goats appear to be more sensitive to inanition as compared to Alpine and Nubian goats. Presumably, their obligate nutrient requirements for hair production limits their ability to adapt, making them more vulnerable to nutritional stress. 相似文献

The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of maternal stress during pregnancy on the emotional reactivity, the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis, and the sympatho-adrenomedullary (SAM) system of goat offspring according to their gender, and to investigate the role of maternal cortisol in prenatal stress effects. Goats were exposed to ten transports in isolation or ten ACTH injections (0.125 IU/kg body weight) during the last third of pregnancy. Control goats remained undisturbed. No effect of repeated transport during the last third of pregnancy was found on basal cortisol concentrations of the offspring. However, an increase in phenylethanolamine N-methyl transferase activity in the adrenals was observed in prenatally stressed kids compared to control kids (P = 0.031). In the presence of novelty, prenatally stressed female kids were more active (P = 0.049) than control females; they also showed more signs of arousal (P = 0.039) and tended to explore more of their environment (P = 0.053) in reaction to a startling stimulus. On the contrary, prenatally stressed male kids tended to be less active (P = 0.051) than control male kids but showed more signs of distress (P = 0.047) in the presence of novelty. Intermediate effects were found on the emotional reactivity to novelty of kids born from dams given injections of ACTH. In conclusion, transport stress in pregnant goats affects the sympatho-adrenomedullary system and the emotional reactivity of their offspring in a gender-specific manner. Moreover, the effects of prenatal transport and ACTH injections showed some similarities but differed in some critical details. 相似文献

To provide information on the transmission dynamics of cryptosporidial infections in domestic small ruminants and the potential role of sheep and goats as a source for human cryptosporidiosis, Cryptosporidium-positive isolates from 137 diarrheic lambs and 17 goat kids younger than 21 days of age were examined by using genotyping and subtyping techniques. Fecal specimens were collected between 2004 and 2006 from 71 sheep and 7 goat farms distributed throughout Aragón (northeastern Spain). Cryptosporidium parvum was the only species identified by restriction analyses of PCR products from small-subunit rRNA genes from all 154 microscopy-positive isolates and the sequencing of a subset of 50 isolates. Sequence analyses of the glycoprotein (GP60) gene revealed extensive genetic diversity within the C. parvum strains in a limited geographical area, in which the isolates from lambs exhibited 11 subtypes in two subtype families (IId and IIa) and those from goat kids displayed four subtypes within the family IId. Most isolates (98%) belonged to the subtype family IId, whereas only three isolates belonged to the most widely distributed family, IIa. Three of the four most prevalent subtypes (IIdA17G1a, IIdA19G1, and IIdA18G1) were previously identified in humans, and five subtypes (IIdA14G1, IIdA15G1, IIdA24G1, IIdA25G1, and IIdA26G1) were novel subtypes. All IId subtypes were identical to each other in the nonrepeat region, except for subtypes IIdA17G1b and IIdA22G1, which differed by a single nucleotide polymorphism downstream of the trinucleotide repeats. These findings suggest that lambs and goat kids are an important reservoir of the zoonotic C. parvum subtype family IId for humans. 相似文献

Summary The migratory and foraging behavior of individually marked bighorn ewes ( Ovis canadensis) was studied to test the hypothesis that forage quality determined seasonal range selection. Forage quality was monitored
through analysis of fecal crude protein. Ewes in the study population utilized two distinct ranges differing in elevation
and possibly predation risk. Pregnant ewes migrated in May from the low-elevation winter range to lambing areas at higher
elevation, before plant growth had started there. In so doing, they moved from a range of high-quality forage to one of low-quality
forage, apparently to avoid predation on newborn lambs. Non-pregnant adult ewes migrated later. Most yearling ewes (which
are not pregnant) migrated with the adult ewes to the lambing areas, but returned to the winter range within a few days, then
migrated again to high-elevation areas in June. Forage quality was higher at high elevation from mid-June at least through
July, but forage availability appeared to be lower than in the winter range. Seasonal range selection is likely determined
by a combination of nutritional and antipredator constraints. The antipredator strategy of bighorn ewes does not always allow
them to utilize the range with the best forage. 相似文献

Heat and stable isotope tracers were used to study axial and radial water transport in relation to sapwood anatomical characteristics and internal water storage in four canopy tree species of a seasonally dry tropical forest in Panama. Anatomical characteristics of the wood and radial profiles of sap flow were measured at the base, upper trunk, and crown of a single individual of Anacardium excelsum, Ficus insipida, Schefflera morototoni, and Cordia alliodora during two consecutive dry seasons. Vessel lumen diameter and vessel density did not exhibit a consistent trend axially from the base of the stem to the base of the crown. However, lumen diameter decreased sharply from the base of the crown to the terminal branches. The ratio of vessel lumen area to sapwood cross-sectional area was consistently higher at the base of the crown than at the base of the trunk in A. excelsum, F. insipida and C. alliodora, but no axial trend was apparent in S. morototoni. Radial profiles of the preceding wood anatomical characteristics varied according to species and the height at which the wood samples were obtained. Radial profiles of sap flux density measured with thermal dissipation sensors of variable length near the base of the crown were highly correlated with radial profiles of specific hydraulic conductivity (k(s)) calculated from xylem anatomical characteristics. The relationship between sap flux density and k(s) was species-independent. Deuterium oxide (D(2)O) injected into the base of the trunk of the four study trees was detected in the water transpired from the upper crown after only 1 day in the 26-m-tall C. alliodora tree, 2 days in the 28-m-tall F. insipida tree, 3 days in the 38-m-tall A. excelsum tree, and 5 days in the 22-m-tall S. morototoni tree. Radial transport of injected D(2)O was detected in A. excelsum, F. insipida and S. morototoni, but not C. alliodora. The rate of axial D(2)O transport, a surrogate for maximum sap velocity, was positively correlated with the predicted sapwood k(s) and with tree height normalized by the relative diurnal water storage capacity. Residence times for the disappearance of the D(2)O tracer in transpired water ranged from 2 days in C. alliodora to 22 days in A. excelsum and were positively correlated with a normalized index of diurnal water storage capacity. Capacitive exchange of water between stem storage compartments and the transpiration stream thus had a profound influence on apparent rates of axial water transport, the magnitude of radial water movement, and the retention time in the tree of water taken up by the roots. The inverse relationship between internal water exchange capacity and k(s) was consistent with a trade-off contributing to stability of leaf water status through highly efficient water transport at one extreme and release of stored water at the other extreme. 相似文献

1. In many noncooperative vertebrates, maternal effects commonly influence offspring survival and development. In cooperative vertebrates, where multiple adults help to raise young from a single brood, social effects may reduce or replace maternal effects on offspring. 2. Factors affecting offspring survival and development at different stages (fledging, nutritional independence and adulthood) were tested in the cooperatively breeding Arabian babbler to determine the relative importance of social, maternal and environmental factors at each stage. An influence of maternal effects was found during the nestling stage only. 3. Social factors affected the survival and development of young at all stages. The amount of food received from helpers influenced post-fledging weight gain, development of foraging skills, and survival to reproductive age. Environmental effects were also important, with groups occupying high-quality territories more likely to produce young that survived to maturity. 4. The strong influence of helper contributions on the survival and development of young at all stages from hatching to maturity suggests social factors may have important long-term effects on offspring fitness in cooperative societies. Traditional measures of offspring survival in cooperative birds, which commonly measure survival to fledging age only, may underestimate the significant benefit of helper contributions on the survival and development of young. 相似文献

Synovial fluid samples of goat kids inoculated (ip) with 5 ml of 48 hr log phase culture of Mycoplasma mycoides sub sp. mycoides (large colony type) containing 10(7) cfu/ml were analysed for physical, cytological and biochemical properties. The synovial effusions were exudative in nature with increased volume. Gross appearances were serofibrinous, haemorrhagic and turbid containing flocculent materials with immediate clot formation. Mucinous precipitate quality was very poor having friable precipitates with cloudy supernatant. There were high total leucocytic and erythrocytic counts with significant high numbers of both neutrophils and lymphocytes. Synovial fluid sugar contents were significantly reduced, whereas total protein contents were significantly increased with concomitant reduction in albumin:globulin ratio. The alkaline phosphatase and transaminase values were also markedly increased in the synovial fluids of mycoplasma induced polyarthritic goat kids. The results may provide a clinical guideline for diagnosis, chemotherapy and prognosis of different joint diseases in domesticated animals. 相似文献

Six groups of six goat kids were fed individually for 168 days with wheat straw given various treatments: (1) control; (2) 33 g NaOH/kg straw; (3) 80 g NaOH/kg, partly neutralized with mineral acids; (4) mineral control for 80 g NaOH/kg; (5) 120 g NaOH/kg, partly neutralized with mineral acids, and (6) mineral control for 120 g NaOH/kg straw. The average weight gain was significantly superior ( P< 0.05) and the efficiency of dry matter (DM) and energy utilization was the highest with the 80 g NaOH/kg straw treatment. This treatment also gave significantly higher ( P<0.05) digestibility of DM, organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), nitrogen-free extract (NFE) and hemicellulose than the control and 33 g NaOH/kg straw treatments. Increasing levels of alkali decreased ( P<0.05) the digestibility of crude protein (CP) and ether extract (EE). Digestible energy and nitrogen-corrected metabolisable energy (ME n) (as a percentage of gross energy (GE)) were maximal with 80 g NaOH/kg. The pH value of rumen liquor was the same for the control and the 33 g NaOH/kg and 80 g NaOH/kg treatments, but significantly increased ( P<0.05) with the 120 g NaOH/kg straw treatment. The mean values for rumen ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N) were the same for the control, the 33 g NaOH/kg, and mineral controls for 80 and 120 g NaOH/kg treatments, but 80 g NaOH and 120 g NaOH/kg straw gave significantly lower values. It is suggested that by partially neutralizing the residual alkali, 80 g NaOH/kg straw can give higher efficiency of energy utilization for growth and digestibility of nutrients compared with 33 g NaOH/kg or the untreated control group, and the extensive use of treated straw in the diets of animals of which a rapid rate of production is not demanded, may be advantageous. 相似文献

Summary Life history theory suggests that reproductive characteristics such as ovum size and clutch size should be well buffered against vararies of the environment. However, studies which demonstrate environmental sensitivity of reproductive characteristics are increasing in number, as are studies which find that maternal effects are responsible for much of the variation in developmental and growth rates in embryonic and larval fish and amphibians. The data reported here demonstrate that the environment, in terms of temperature and food availability that a specific individual encounters during vitellogenesis, exerts a strong influence on both egg size and number. Warmer temperatures and less food decrease ovum size, while colder temperatures and less food decrease clutch size. The variation in ovum size that is induced by the environment can exert a strong influence on variation in offspring development and growth and serve as an excellent model for studies on the evolution of developmental plasticity. 相似文献

Among temperate‐breeding birds, offspring survival and reproductive success are often inversely related to timing of breeding. The mechanisms that produce seasonal declines in offspring survival are not fully understood but may be related to temporal changes in parental quality, environmental quality, or both. We analyzed data for lesser scaup Aythya affinis to evaluate hypothesized effects of parental quality and date on pre‐fledging survival. Maternal quality, as indexed by body mass, did not have an independent effect on offspring survival in this species. Maternal body mass did not decline seasonally and did not have an independent effect on duckling survival. Although we did not detect an independent effect of hatch date on duckling survival, duckling survival declined seasonally for broods raised by lightweight females, indicating an interactive effect of maternal mass and date. We hypothesize that this interaction may be driven by seasonally declining food resources coupled with the influence of female condition on the ability to monopolize food resources or remain attentive to the brood. We also tested morphological predictions of the date hypothesis by examining physical characteristics of ducklings. When corrected for age and size, late‐hatched ducklings tended to have marginally larger digestive systems and smaller leg muscles than did early‐hatched birds. Abundances of intestinal parasites acquired through diet decreased marginally in late‐hatched ducklings. Results for digestive system and parasite infection patterns suggested that later‐hatched broods may shift diets, consistent with a contribution of environmental factors to seasonal variation in offspring survival. Taken together, our results suggest that both female attributes and environmental conditions may influence seasonal patterns of offspring survival in this species. 相似文献

The objective was to identify legume shrub species for development of agroforestry technologies based on seed and forage (leaves and twigs < 10 mm diameter) yield, and determinants of forage quality. Ten individual plants of Bituminaria bituminosa ‘Ecotypes 1’, B. bituminosa ‘Ecotypes 2’, Medicago citrina, and M. arborea from Spain; Colutea istria and Onobrychis aurantiaca from Syria; C. istria from Jordan; Chamaecytisus mollis from Morocco; and Coronilla glauca from France were randomly selected from plots established in a non-tropical dryland environment in northwest Syria in 2000. Five individual plants of each species were cut back to 0.5 m above ground in March 2004. Coppice regrowths were pruned in December 2004 and April 2005 to determine forage yield and proportion of forage in the total above ground biomass (PEFB). Forage samples were analyzed for concentrations of crude protein (CP), lignin(sa), acid detergent fibre (ADFom), neutral detergent fibre (aNDFom), in vitro organic matter (OM) digestibility (IVOMD), and in vitro 24 h gas production (IVGP24h). Matured seeds were hand harvested from the remaining five plants of each species to estimate seed yield. Forage (21–250 kg DM/ha) and seed (0–200 kg DM/ha) yields; PEFB (0.22–0.96); and concentrations of CP (85–115 g/kg DM), lignin(sa) (14–42 g/kg DM), ADFom (94–170 g/kg DM), aNDFom (122–217 g/kg DM), IVOMD (456–617 g/kg OM), and IVGP24h (27–42 ml 200 mg/DM) varied (P<0.05) among shrub species. The IVOMD and IVGP24h were positively correlated ( r = 0.75, P<0.032), whereas IVOMD and IVGP24h were negatively correlated with ADFom, lignin(sa) and aNDFom. In terms of forage and seed yields and determinants of forage quality, C. istria from Jordan, M. arborea, B. bituminosa ‘Ecotype-2’, C. istria and O. aurantiaca have higher potential than C. mollis, C. glauca and B. Bituminosa ‘Ecotype-1’ for the development of agroforestry technologies in non-tropical dry areas. 相似文献

Inconsistent data exist on the distribution of zoonotic Cryptosporidium species and subtypes in sheep and goats in European countries, and few such data are available from Greece. In this study, 280 fecal specimens were collected from 132 diarrheic lambs and 148 diarrheic goat kids aged 4 to 15?days on 15 farms in northern Greece, and examined for Cryptosporidium spp. using microscopy of Ziehl-Neelsen-stained fecal smears. Cryptosporidium spp. in 80 microscopy-positive fecal specimens (39 from lambs and 41 from goat kids) were genotyped by PCR-RFLP analysis of the small subunit rRNA gene and subtyped by sequence analysis the 60?kDa glycoprotein gene. Among the 33 specimens successfully genotyped, C. parvum was found in 32 and C. xiaoi in one. Seven subtypes belonging to two subtype families (IIa and IId) were identified among the 29 C. parvum specimens successfully subtyped, including IIaA14G2R1 (1/29), IIaA15G2R1 (6/29), IIaA20G1R1 (7/29), IIdA14G2 (1/29), IIdA15G1 (9/29), IIdA16G1 (3/29), and IIdA23G1 (2/29). Lambs were more commonly infected with C. parvum IIa subtypes, whereas goat kids were more with IId subtypes. The results illustrate that C. parvum is prevalent in diarrheic lambs and goat kids in northern Greece and these animals could potentially play a role in epidemiology of human cryptosporidiosis. 相似文献

In most egg-laying vertebrates, maternal responses to stressful conditions are translated into the release of glucocorticoid
hormones such as cortisol, which are then transmitted to their developing embryos. Although such maternally transmitted hormonal
resources have been shown to influence or even interfere with the optimal developmental trajectories of offspring in many
taxa, their influence on the dynamics of wild fish populations remains largely unexplored. Here, we examined the extent to
which simulated hormonally mediated maternal effects influence the development and early survival of the coral reef damselfish,
Pomacentrus amboinensis. Concentrations of cortisol in the eggs were manipulated within naturally occurring limits by immersion. We found that the
proportion of embryos that delayed hatching when exposed to high levels of cortisol was considerably lower than in the other
two treatments (low cortisol dose and control). High cortisol levels in P. amboinensis eggs resulted in increased egg mortality and greater asymmetry in hatchlings. For embryos that successfully hatched, individuals
from the elevated cortisol treatments (especially low dose) survived longer after hatching. Although individuals that originated
from eggs with elevated cortisol levels survived longer after hatching, they may not gain an overall survival advantage. Our
results suggest that subtle increases in the allocation of maternally derived hormones, such as cortisol, to offspring are
a direct way for stressed mothers to endow their young with an immediate survival advantage. We propose that this immediate
benefit outweighs the developmental costs which may be expressed as reduced fitness at later life stages.

Maternal effects can have lasting fitness consequences for offspring, but these effects are often difficult to disentangle from associated responses in offspring traits. We studied persistent maternal effects on offspring survival in North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) by manipulating maternal nutrition without altering the post-emergent nutritional environment experienced by offspring. This was accomplished by providing supplemental food to reproductive females over winter and during reproduction, but removing the supplemental food from the system prior to juvenile emergence. We then monitored juvenile dispersal, settlement and survival from birth to 1 year of age. Juveniles from supplemented mothers experienced persistent and magnifying survival advantages over juveniles from control mothers long after supplemental food was removed. These maternal effects on survival persisted, despite no observable effect on traits normally associated with high offspring quality, such as body size, dispersal distance or territory quality. However, supplemented mothers did provide their juveniles an early start by breeding an average of 18 days earlier than control mothers, which may explain the persistent survival advantages their juveniles experienced. 相似文献

The survival probability of an individual may be limited by density-dependent mechanisms and by environmental stochasticity, but can also be modified by individual characteristics. In our study, we investigated over-winter survival of subadults of an enclosed European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus population in a temperate zone habitat over the period 1992–2002. We: (1) selected for appropriate models to explain individual variation in over-winter survival and the animals autumn body mass, the latter was used as a measure of the individual pre-winter body condition; and (2) aimed to compare the sensitivity of the target variables on the realised variation of the factors considered. Model selection based on information theory revealed that individual over-winter survival was best explained by the combination of autumn body mass, winter temperature, population density and sex, where the probability of survival was higher in females than in males. According to this model, the probability of survival reacted most sensitively to variation in the autumn body mass and in winter temperature. Individual autumn body mass was best explained by the combination of the date of birth, population density, and weather conditions by means of the percentage of rainy days during the first 2 months after the animals had emerged above ground, where the autumn body mass was negatively related to the percentage of rainy days. The chosen model suggested that the autumn body mass reacted most sensitively to variation in the date of birth. Combining these models, we found that weather conditions during two different periods of time as well as population density, sex and the date of birth operated together to determine the probability of over-winter survival. In particular, the study points out the high impact of environmental stochasticity on over-winter survival: (1) by direct effects of winter temperature conditions, and (2) by the indirect action of weather conditions to which the animals were exposed during the early period of juvenile development. 相似文献

The effects of halofuginone lactate (100 μg/kg B.W.) for the treatment and prevention of cryptosporidiosis in goat kids was evaluated in 3 field trials. Trial 1 was to assess the efficacy of halofuginone on the treatment of kid diarrhoea caused by Cryptosporidium spp. Halofuginone given for 7 and for 3 consecutive days, respectively, was effective for the treatment of diarrhoea ( P < 0.05). Also, halofuginone administered for a 7-day treatment was significantly ( P < 0.05) more effective than a 3-day treatment in reducing the incidence of diarrhoea in the infected goat herds. In the second trial halofuginone given for 7 days reduced significantly ( P < 0.05) the diarrhoea incidence, the time of oocyst shedding and the mean intensity of shedding. In the third trial halofuginone was effective in reducing the death rate and preventing cryptosporidiosis. It was concluded, that halofuginone lactate at a dosage rate of 100 μg/kg for 7 days was effective in treatment and prevention of kid cryptosporidiosis. 相似文献

While humans usually give birth to singletons, dizygotic twinning occurs at low rates in all populations worldwide. We evaluate two hypotheses that have differing expectations about the effects of bearing twins on maternal lifetime reproduction and survival. The maternal depletion hypothesis argues that mothers of twins will suffer negative outcomes owing to the higher physiological costs associated with bearing multiples. Alternatively, twinning, while costly, may indicate mothers with a greater capacity to bear that cost. Drawing from the vast natural fertility data in the Utah Population Database, we compared the reproductive and survival events of 4603 mothers who bore twins and 54 183 who had not. These mothers were born between 1807 and 1899, lived at least to the age of 50 years and married once to men who were alive when their wives were 50. Results from proportional hazards and regression analyses are consistent with the second hypothesis. Mothers of twins exhibit lower postmenopausal mortality, shorter average inter-birth intervals, later ages at last birth and higher lifetime fertility than their singleton-only bearing counterparts. From the largest historical sample of twinning mothers yet published, we conclude that bearing twins is more likely for those with a robust phenotype and is a useful index of maternal heterogeneity. 相似文献
