Many studies have analyzed muscle activity during different strength exercises. Although the leg press (LP) is one of the most common exercises performed, there is little evidence of lower limb muscle activity patterns during this exercise and its variations. Thus, this study aimed to verify how mechanical changes and loads affect lower limb muscle activity during the performance of different LP exercises. Fourteen women performed 3 LP exercises: 45 degrees LP (LP45), LP high (LPH), and LP low (LPL) at 40% and 80% of the 1 repetition maximum. The electromyographic activity of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius, and gluteus maximus was recorded. Results suggested that mechanical changes affect lower limb muscle activity and that it is related to the load used. At moderate effort levels, the rectus femoris and gastrocnemius were more active during the LP45 and LPL than during the LPH. At a high effort level, the rectus femoris and vastus lateralis (quadriceps) were more active during the LPL than the LPH. Again, the rectus femoris and gastrocnemius were more active during the LP45 and LPL than the LPH. On the other hand, gluteus maximus activity was greater during the LPH than the LPL. This study found that coordination patterns of muscle activity are different when performing LP variations at high or moderate effort levels because of mechanical changes and different loads lifted during the different LP exercises. These results suggest that if the goal is to induce greater rectus femoris and vastus lateralis (quadriceps) activation, the LPL should be performed. On the other hand, if the goal is to induce gluteus maximus activity, the LPH should be performed.  相似文献

Recent research suggests that humans have some ability to selectively activate or relax some muscles during isometric or dynamic muscle actions without changing posture or position. This study sought to reveal whether trained athletes could isolate either the pectoral or triceps muscles, respectively, at different intensities when given verbal technique instruction. Eleven male Division III football players performed 3 sets of bench press at 50% 1-repetition max (1RM) and 80% 1RM while electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded from the pectoralis major (PM), anterior deltoid (AD), and triceps brachii (TB). In the first set, the subjects performed the exercise without instruction. In the second set, the subjects were given verbal instructions to use only chest muscles. In the third set, the subjects were instructed to use only triceps muscles. Mean normalized root mean square EMG activity was calculated during 3 repetitions in each condition. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to detect differences from the preinstruction condition, with significance set to p ≤ 0.017 as indicated by a Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. During the 50% max lift with verbal instructions to focus on chest muscles, PM EMG activity increased by 22% over preinstruction activity (p = 0.005), whereas AD and TB activities were statistically unchanged. When the subjects were instructed to focus on only the triceps muscles, PM returned to baseline activity, whereas TB activity was increased by 26% (p = 0.005). When the lift was increased to 80% max, PM and AD activities were both increased with verbal instructions to use only chest muscles. The TB activity was unchanged during the 80% lifts, regardless of instructions. In conclusion, it is found that verbal technique instruction is effective in shifting muscle activity during a basic lift, but it may be less effective at higher intensities.  相似文献

It has been well known that balance instabilities after long-term exposure to microgravity (e.g., Anderson et al. 1986) or bedrest (BR) can be related to alterations and/or adaptations to postural control strategies. Little is known, however, how the reduced muscular activity affects the activation pattern of the lower limb muscles during quiet standing (QS). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not any changes in the lower limb muscle activation patterns during QS would occur after BR.  相似文献

Information about anaerobic energy production and mechanical efficiency that occurs over time during short-lasting maximal exercise is scarce and controversial. Bilateral leg press is an interesting muscle contraction model to estimate anaerobic energy production and mechanical efficiency during maximal exercise because it largely differs from the models used until now. This study examined the changes in muscle metabolite concentration and power output production during the first and the second half of a set of 10 repetitions to failure (10RM) of bilateral leg press exercise. On two separate days, muscle biopsies were obtained from vastus lateralis prior and immediately after a set of 5 or a set of 10 repetitions. During the second set of 5 repetitions, mean power production decreased by 19% and the average ATP utilisation accounted for by phosphagen decreased from 54% to 19%, whereas ATP utilisation from anaerobic glycolysis increased from 46 to 81%. Changes in contraction time and power output were correlated to the changes in muscle Phosphocreatine (PCr; r = −0.76; P<0.01) and lactate (r = −0.91; P<0.01), respectively, and were accompanied by parallel decreases (P<0.01-0.05) in muscle energy charge (0.6%), muscle ATP/ADP (8%) and ATP/AMP (19%) ratios, as well as by increases in ADP content (7%). The estimated average rate of ATP utilisation from anaerobic sources during the final 5 repetitions fell to 83% whereas total anaerobic ATP production increased by 9% due to a 30% longer average duration of exercise (18.4±4.0 vs 14.2±2.1 s). These data indicate that during a set of 10RM of bilateral leg press exercise there is a decrease in power output which is associated with a decrease in the contribution of PCr and/or an increase in muscle lactate. The higher energy cost per repetition during the second 5 repetitions is suggestive of decreased mechanical efficiency.  相似文献

Uncertainty exists as to whether a period of passive arterial occlusion (PAO) or ischemic exercise (IE) results in peak lower leg vascular conductance (LVC). This uncertainty is due to the different body positions, active muscle mass, and occlusion times used for PAO or IE. The purpose of this study was to examine whether 10 min of PAO elicits a similar LVC compared with ischemic dorsiflexion (IDF), ischemic plantar flexion (IPF), and ischemic plantar-dorsiflexion (IPDF). Ten subjects (5 women, 27 +/- 9 yr, 68 +/- 3 kg) were studied on 3 days over 1 wk in a semireclined position with the right foot attached to an isokinetic dynamometer. Mean arterial pressure (Finapres) and lower leg blood flow (LBF, venous occlusion plethysmography) were measured at rest and after PAO and IE. PAO was administered randomly on 1 of the 3 days and before IE. IE protocols consisted of maximal isokinetic dorsiflexion and/or plantar flexion at 120 and 60 degrees/s, respectively. In a second experiment, an additional eight subjects (4 women, 29 +/- 12 yr, 77 +/- 12 kg) were studied to examine the effect of isokinetic speed during IDF on peak LBF and LVC. Peak LVC (ml.min(-1).100 ml(-1).mmHg(-1)) was similar among IPF (0.590 +/- 0.16), IPDF (0.532 +/- 0.17), and PAO (0.511 +/- 0.18), and significantly lower after IDF (0.334 +/- 0.15). No differences in peak LBF and LVC were observed after IDF using different isokinetic speeds. We conclude that 10 min of PAO, IPF, and IPDF performed in a similar posture are adequate stimuli to elicit peak LVC.  相似文献

This investigation was undertaken to evaluate whether endurance running of the type known to retard the muscle atrophy associated with glucocorticoid excess inhibits activation of glucocorticoid-receptor complexes to a DNA binding state. Female adrenalectomized rats received an injection (50 microCi/100 g body wt ip) of [3H]triamcinolone acetonide and remained sedentary or were immediately exercised by endurance running at 23 m/min for up to 90 min. Receptor activation, as quantified by binding to DNA-cellulose, steadily increased from 10-20% of the receptors capable of binding DNA in uninjected controls to 25-45% by 5 min and to 53-80% by 90 min after receiving the hormone in all muscles studied (fast-twitch red vastus lateralis, fast-twitch white vastus lateralis, slow-twitch soleus, mixed gastrocnemius, and heart). Exercise did not influence the time-course changes in percent activation. When activation was determined from changes in the conformational state of the receptor as measured by diethylaminoethyl-cellulose anion exchange chromatography, there was a similar time-dependent formation of activated receptor forms in all muscle types. However, exercise did not inhibit or delay the appearance of the activated receptor from the unactivated state. These results indicate that glucocorticoid receptor activation occurs at a rate that is independent of both fiber type and delivery of steroid to working muscles during exercise. If exercise alters receptor activation, a longer time period, beyond 90 min of running, or even additional training may be needed for inhibition to be expressed.  相似文献

Ion concentration changes in whole blood, plasma, and erythrocytes across inactive muscle were examined in eight healthy males performing four 30-s bouts of maximal isokinetic cycling with 4 min rest between each bout. Blood was sampled from the arm brachial artery and deep antecubital vein during the intermittent exercise period and for 90 min of recovery. Arterial and venous erythrocyte lactate concentration ([Lac-]) increased from 0.3 +/- 0.1 to 12.5 +/- 1.3 (p < 0.01) and 1.1 +/- 0.4 to 8.5 +/- 1.5 mmol/L (p < 0.01), respectively, returning to control values during recovery. Arterial and venous plasma [Lac-] increased from 1.5 +/- 0.2 to 27.7 +/- 1.8 and from 1.3 +/- 0.4 to 25.7 +/- 3.5 mmol/L, respectively, and was greater than erythrocyte [Lac-] throughout exercise and recovery. Arterial and venous [K+] increased in erythrocytes from 119.5 +/- 5.1 to 125.4 +/- 4.6 (p < 0.01) and from 113.6 +/- 1.7 to 120.6 +/- 7.1 mmol/L, respectively, decreasing to control during recovery. In arterial and venous plasma, [K+] increased from 4.3 +/- 0.1 to 6.1 +/- 0.2 (p < 0.01) and from 4.5 +/- 0.2 to 5.3 +/- 0.2 mmol/L (p < 0.01), respectively, decreasing to control during recovery. The efflux of Lac- out of erythrocytes against an electrochemical concentration gradient suggests the presence of an active transport system. Efflux of K+ from erythrocytes as blood passes across inactive muscle affords an important adaptation to the K+ release from muscle activated in heavy exercise.  相似文献

This investigation examined the influence of the number of repetitions per set on power output and muscle metabolism during leg press exercise. Six trained men (age 34 ± 6 yr) randomly performed either 5 sets of 10 repetitions (10REP), or 10 sets of 5 repetitions (5REP) of bilateral leg press exercise, with the same initial load and rest intervals between sets. Muscle biopsies (vastus lateralis) were taken before the first set, and after the first and the final sets. Compared with 5REP, 10REP resulted in a markedly greater decrease (P<0.05) of the power output, muscle PCr and ATP content, and markedly higher (P<0.05) levels of muscle lactate and IMP. Significant correlations (P<0.01) were observed between changes in muscle PCr and muscle lactate (R(2) = 0.46), between changes in muscle PCr and IMP (R(2) = 0.44) as well as between changes in power output and changes in muscle ATP (R(2) = 0.59) and lactate (R(2) = 0.64) levels. Reducing the number of repetitions per set by 50% causes a lower disruption to the energy balance in the muscle. The correlations suggest that the changes in PCr and muscle lactate mainly occur simultaneously during exercise, whereas IMP only accumulates when PCr levels are low. The decrease in ATP stores may contribute to fatigue.  相似文献

Respiratory muscle work compromises leg blood flow during maximal exercise   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Harms, Craig A., Mark A. Babcock, Steven R. McClaran, DavidF. Pegelow, Glenn A. Nickele, William B. Nelson, and Jerome A. Dempsey.Respiratory muscle work compromises leg blood flow during maximalexercise. J. Appl. Physiol.82(5): 1573-1583, 1997.We hypothesized that duringexercise at maximal O2 consumption (O2 max),high demand for respiratory muscle blood flow() would elicit locomotor muscle vasoconstrictionand compromise limb . Seven male cyclists(O2 max 64 ± 6 ml · kg1 · min1)each completed 14 exercise bouts of 2.5-min duration atO2 max on a cycleergometer during two testing sessions. Inspiratory muscle work waseither 1) reduced via aproportional-assist ventilator, 2)increased via graded resistive loads, or3) was not manipulated (control).Arterial (brachial) and venous (femoral) blood samples, arterial bloodpressure, leg (legs;thermodilution), esophageal pressure, andO2 consumption(O2) weremeasured. Within each subject and across all subjects, at constantmaximal work rate, significant correlations existed(r = 0.74-0.90;P < 0.05) between work of breathing(Wb) and legs (inverse), leg vascular resistance (LVR), and leg O2(O2 legs;inverse), and between LVR and norepinephrine spillover. Mean arterialpressure did not change with changes in Wb nor did tidal volume orminute ventilation. For a ±50% change from control in Wb,legs changed 2 l/min or 11% of control, LVRchanged 13% of control, and O2extraction did not change; thusO2 legschanged 0.4 l/min or 10% of control. TotalO2 max was unchangedwith loading but fell 9.3% with unloading; thusO2 legsas a percentage of totalO2 max was 81% incontrol, increased to 89% with respiratory muscle unloading, anddecreased to 71% with respiratory muscle loading. We conclude that Wbnormally incurred during maximal exercise causes vasoconstriction inlocomotor muscles and compromises locomotor muscle perfusion andO2.

The purpose of this study was to investigate neuromuscular activation of the vastus intermedius (VI) muscle during fatiguing contraction. Seven healthy men performed sustained isometric knee extension exercise at 50% of maximal voluntary contraction until exhaustion. During the fatiguing task, surface electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded from four muscle components of the quadriceps femoris muscle group: VI; vastus lateralis (VL); vastus medialis (VM); and rectus femoris (RF) muscles. For the VI muscle, our recently developed technique was used. Root mean square (RMS) and median frequency (MF) of the surface EMG signal were calculated and these variables were then normalized by the value at the beginning of the task. Normalized RMS of the VI muscle resembled those of the other three muscles at all given times. At 95% of exhaustion time, normalized MF of the VI muscle was significantly higher than that of the VL muscle (p < 0.05). These results suggested that neuromuscular activation is not consistent between the VI and VL muscles at the exhaustion for isometric submaximal contraction and this could reflect the dissimilar intramuscular metabolism between these muscles.  相似文献

The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether the sympathetic neural activation induced by isometric exercise is influenced by the size of the contracting muscle mass. To address this, in nine healthy subjects (aged 19-27 yr) we measured heart rate, systolic arterial blood pressure, and muscle sympathetic nerve activity in the leg (MSNA; peroneal nerve) before (control) and during 2.5 min of isometric handgrip exercise (30% of maximal voluntary force). Exercise was performed with the right and left arms separately and with both arms simultaneously (random order). During exercise, heart rate, systolic pressure, and MSNA increased above control under all conditions (P less than 0.05). For each variable, the magnitudes of the increases from control to the end of exercise were significantly greater when exercise was performed with two arms compared with either arm alone (P less than 0.05). In general, the increases in heart rate, systolic pressure, and MSNA elicited during two-arm exercise were significantly less than the simple sums of the responses evoked during exercise of each arm separately. These findings indicate that the magnitude of the sympathetic neural activation evoked during isometric exercise in humans is determined in part by the size of the active muscle mass. In addition, our results suggest that the sympathetic cardiovascular adjustments elicited during exercise of separate limbs are not simply additive but instead exhibit an inhibitory interaction (i.e., neural occlusion).  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of voluntarily manipulating muscle activation and localized muscle fatigue on tibial response parameters, including peak tibial acceleration, time to peak tibial acceleration, and the acceleration slope, measured at the knee during unshod heel impacts. A human pendulum delivered consistent impacts to 15 female and 15 male subjects. The tibialis anterior and lateral gastrocnemius were examined using electromyography, thus allowing voluntary contraction to various activation states (baseline, 15%, 30%, 45%, and 60% of the maximum activation state) and assessing localized muscle fatigue. A skin-mounted uniaxial accelerometer, preloaded medial to the tibial tuberosity, allowed tibial response parameter determination. There were significant decreases in peak acceleration during tibialis anterior fatigue, compared to baseline and all other activation states. In females, increased time to peak acceleration and decreased acceleration slope occurred during fatigue compared to 30% and 45%, and compared to 15% through 60% of the maximum activation state, respectively. Slight peak acceleration and acceleration slope increases, and decreased time to peak acceleration as activation state increased during tibialis anterior testing, were noted. When examining the lateral gastrocnemius, the time to peak acceleration was significantly higher across gender in the middle activation states than at the baseline and fatigue states. The acceleration slope decreased at all activation states above baseline in females, and decreased at 60% of the maximum activation state in males compared to the baseline and fatigue states. Findings agree with localized muscle fatigue literature, suggesting that with fatigue there is decreased impact transmission, which may protect the leg. The relative effects of leg stiffness and ankle angle on tibial response need to be verified.  相似文献

Effect of glucose infusion on muscle malonyl-CoA during exercise   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Previous work in this laboratory has shown that muscle malonyl-CoA, the inhibitor of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT I), decreased during exercise. Hepatic malonyl-CoA content decreases when glucose availability decreases such as during fasting or when the glucagon-to-insulin ratio increases such as during prolonged exercise or in response to insulin deficiency. To investigate the effect of glucose infusion on muscle malonyl-CoA during exercise, male rats were anesthetized (pentobarbital via venous catheters) at rest or after running (21 m/min, 15% grade) for 30 or 60 min. During exercise rats were infused with either glucose (0.625 g/ml) or saline at a rate of 1.5 ml/h. Gastrocnemius muscles and liver samples were frozen at liquid nitrogen temperature. Muscle malonyl-CoA decreased from 1.24 +/- 0.06 to 0.69 +/- 0.05 nmol/g with glucose infusion and to 0.43 +/- 0.04 nmol/g with saline infusion during 60 min of exercise. In the liver, glucose infusion prevented the drop in malonyl-CoA. This indicates that glucose infusion attenuates the progressive decline in muscle malonyl-CoA and prevents the decline in liver malonyl-CoA during prolonged exercise.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to examine the cardiovascular and metabolic responses between dynamic and static exercise when a leg press exercise is performed. Seven participants (20-21 yrs) were recruited for the experiment. Four modes of dynamic or static leg press exercise were assigned in two combined conditions: a unilateral or a bilateral condition and two exercise intensities with 20% and 40% of maximal voluntary contraction (20% MVC, 40% MVC). The duration of the dynamic exercise and the static exercise at 20% MVC was six minutes, and the static exercise at 40% MVC was three minutes. In the dynamic exercise, ventilation (VE), O2 uptake (VO2), heart rate (HR), and systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP, DBP) reached the steady-state after 3 min exercise, while in the static leg press, these responses continued to increase at the end of exercise. The alteration in VO2 mostly depended on both exercise intensity and the one- or two-leg condition during the dynamic leg press, whereas no significant difference in VO2 during the static leg press was found in the four modes. The alterations in rate-pressure product (RPP) depended solely on exercise intensity and leg condition. These findings suggest that the static leg press causes a greater rise in HR, SBP, and DBP. In addition, RPP appears particularly sensitive to experimental modes.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze trunk muscle activity during bridge style stabilization exercises, when combined with single and double leg support strategies. Twenty-nine healthy volunteers performed bridge exercises in 3 different positions (back, front and side bridges), with and without an elevated leg, and a quadruped exercise with contralateral arm and leg raise ("bird-dog"). Surface EMG was bilaterally recorded from rectus abdominis (RA), external and internal oblique (EO, IO), and erector spinae (ES). Back, front and side bridges primarily activated the ES (approximately 17% MVC), RA (approximately 30% MVC) and muscles required to support the lateral moment (mostly obliques), respectively. Compared with conventional bridge exercises, single leg support produced higher levels of trunk activation, predominantly in the oblique muscles. The bird-dog exercise produced greatest activity in IO on the side of the elevated arm and in the contralateral ES. In conclusion, during a common bridge with double leg support, the antigravity muscles were the most active. When performed with an elevated leg, however, rotation torques increased the activation of the trunk rotators, especially IO. This information may be useful for clinicians and rehabilitation specialists in determining appropriate exercise progression for the trunk stabilizers.  相似文献
