A new research way of palaeopathology has recently opened: it concerns the study of the impact of the human activities on the skeleton and the reconstitution of these activities. Being interested essentially in the activity-induced skeletal markers, we carried out this study on 354 human skeletal remains. The Hungarian series represents a larger sample (263 skeletons from the 10th century; collections of the Department of Anthropology, József Attila University, Szeged, Hungary). We considered also as comparison series a collection of 91 skeletons dating from the Late Antiquity (4th century A.D.) from Provence (France), stored in the collections of the Centre Archéologique du Var (Toulon, France). The present work is based on the results of a general palaeopathological analysis with a particular attention to the possible activity-linked microtraumatic lesions. Articular and periarticular markers of activity were detected as secondary degenerative joint diseases and mechanical enthesopathies. In spite of the high rate of non-specific cases, the alterations reveal several possible activities, historically and archaeologically well documented as riding on horse-back in the Hungarian series. The sexual inegality in the distribution of the macrotraumatic lesions (male predominance of the fractures and sprains in the Hungarian series) reveals also some information about the activities of the ancient Hungarians.  相似文献

Studies of cultural artifacts and faunal remains from European Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic sites indicate a shift in hunter gatherer subsistence strategies, involving an intensification and diversification of resource exploitation relative to earlier foragers during the Tardiglacial and Postglacial periods. This trend has been recognized as well through the analysis of non-pathological skeletal adaptations of the upper limbs of European Upper Paleolithic human fossils. These paleoanthropological studies of adaptive bone modeling also raise the question of female use of throwing-based weapon technology in the Upper Paleolithic. Here, we studied another type of osteological marker of activity, enthesopathies, of the upper limb remains of 37 European Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic human fossils, with the goal of testing two hypotheses: 1) that activity levels were heightened at the end of Upper Paleolithic and into the Mesolithic relative to earlier foragers of the Gravettian, and 2) that there was an absence of a marked sexual division of labor in European hunter-gatherers during this time span. Our results are consistent with the first hypothesis; upper limb enthesopathies are significantly less frequent in the Gravettian group, but raise doubts about the second hypothesis. Four males exhibit lesions that can be confidently associated with throwing activities, while no females exhibit such lesions.  相似文献

Enthesopathies, in the guise of musculoskeletal skeletal stress markers (MSM), have been widely used to reconstruct activity levels in human skeletal populations. In general, studies have focused on their presence in the upper limb, which is used in the majority of daily activities. The aim of this study was to use some of the attachment sites on the humerus to explore the relationship between enthesopathy formation, activity, and the ageing process. The skeletal sample used in this study comprised male adult skeletons with known age‐at‐death and known occupations from the late‐19th and early‐20th century cemeteries in Portugal. The enthesopathies were recorded as either present or absent. Statistical analysis using Fishers exact tests and logistic regression was undertaken to determine whether associations could be found between specific activities or socioeconomic status (manual or nonmanual workers), and age and enthesopathy presence. Left and right sides were analyzed separately. Fisher's exact tests were used to determine the relationship between activity and enthesopathy, and they demonstrated no association between activity and enthesopathies (P > 0.01). The results of the logistic regression established that age was the single most significant factor in enthesopathy formation (P > 0.05). This study found that, in these samples, age‐at‐death, and therefore age‐related degeneration rather than degeneration caused by activities, was the primary cause of enthesopathy formation. Considering the difficulties of reliably ageing adult human skeletal remains, this is a major issue for studies of activity using enthesopathies. Enthesopathies are alterations that could be present at entheses. Two types of enthesopathies have been defined: osteophytic (OF) and osteolytic (OL). In the present paper, we propose a standardized method to score the degree of development of each form of enthesopathy. With this method, the intra- and interobserver errors are less than 50%. The standard was used to study a sample (113 individuals) deriving from osteological collections from the late XIX-early XX century. Information about the age, sex and occupation of the individuals is available. This study demonstrated an effect of age on the form and the degree of development of enthesopathies. The influence of factors related to sex and occupation cannot be excluded. Therefore, functional interpretations of data on enthesopathies in osteoarchaeological series must take account of the estimated age and sex of the specimens and the distribution of the lesions within a single skeleton.  相似文献

Enthesopathies—that is, “musculo‐skeletal stress markers”—are frequently used to reconstruct past lifestyles and activity patterns. Relatively little attention has been paid in physical anthropology to methodological gaps implicit in this approach: almost all methods previously employed neglect current medical insights into enthesopathies and the distinction between healthy and pathological aspects has been arbitrary. This study presents a new visual method of studying fibrocartilaginous enthesopathies of the upper limb (modified from Villotte: Bull Mém Soc Anthropol Paris n.s. 18 (2006) 65–85), and application of this method to 367 males who died between the 18th and 20th centuries, from four European identified skeletal collections: the Christ Church Spitalfields Collection, the identified skeletal collection of the anthropological museum of the University of Coimbra, and the Sassari and Bologna collections of the museum of Anthropology, University of Bologna. The analysis, using generalized estimating equations to model repeated binary outcome variables, has established a strong link between enthesopathies and physical activity: men with occupations involving heavy manual tasks have significantly (P‐value < 0.001) more lesions of the upper limbs than nonmanual and light manual workers. Probability of the presence of an enthesopathy also increases with age and is higher for the right side compared with the left. Our study failed to distinguish significant differences between the collections when adjusted for the other effects. It appears that enthesopathies can be used to reconstruct past lifestyles of populations if physical anthropologists: 1) pay attention to the choice of entheses in their studies and 2) use appropriate methods. 1. The maximal activities of 5'-nucleotidase, adenosine kinase and adenosine deaminase together with the Km values for their respective substrates were measured in muscle, nervous tissue and liver from a large range of animals to provide information on the mechanism of control of adenosine concentration in the tissues. 2. Detailed evidence that the methods used were optimal for the extraction and assay of these enzymes has been deposited as Supplementary Publication SUP 50088 (16pages) at the British Library Lending Division, Boston Spa, Wetherby, West Yorkshire LS23 7BQ, U.K.,from whom copies can be obtained on the terms indicated in Biochem. J. (1978), 169, 5. This evidence includes the effects of pH and temperature on the activities of the enzymes. 3. In many tissues, the activities of 5'-nucleotidase were considerably higher than the sum of the activities of adenosine kinase and deaminase, which suggests that the activity of the nucleotidase must be markedly inhibited in vivo so that adenosine does not accumulate. In the tissues in which comparison is possible, the Km of the nucleotidase is higher than the AMP content of the tissue, and since some of the latter may be bound within the cell, the low concentration of substrate may, in part, be responsible for a low activity in vivo. 4. In most tissues and animals investigated, the values of the Km of adenosine kinase for adenosine are between one and two orders of magnitude lower than those for the deaminase. It is suggested that 5'-nucleotidase and adenosine kinase are simultaneously active so that a substrate cycle between AMP and adenosine is produced: the difference in Km values between kinase and deaminase indicates that, via the cycle, small changes in activity of kinase or nucleotidase produce large changes in adenosine concentration. 5. The activities of adenosine kinase or deaminase from vertebrate muscles are inversely correlated with the activities of phosphorylase in these muscles. Since the magnitude of the latter activities are indicative of the anaerobic nature of muscles, this negative correlation supports the hypothesis that an important role of adenosine is the regulation of blood flow in the aerobic muscles.  相似文献

1. Comparison of the maximum activities of pyruvate kinase with those of phosphofructokinase in a large number of muscles from invertebrates and vertebrates indicates that, in general, in any individual muscle, the activity of pyruvate kinase is only severalfold higher than that of phosphofructokinase. This is consistent with the suggestion, based on mass-action ratio data, that the pyruvate kinase reaction is non-equilibrium in muscle. However, the range of activities of pyruvate kinase in these muscles is considerably larger than that of phosphofructokinase. This difference almost disappears if the enzyme activities from muscles that are known to possess an anaerobic ;succinate pathway' are excluded. It is suggested that, in these muscles, phosphofructokinase provides glycolytic residues for both pyruvate kinase (i.e. glycolysis) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (i.e. the succinate pathway). This is supported by a negative correlation between the activity ratio, pyruvate kinase/phosphofructokinase, and the activities of nucleoside diphosphokinase in these muscles, since high activities of nucleoside diphosphokinase are considered to indicate the presence of the succinate pathway. 2. The effect of fructose bisphosphate on the activities of pyruvate kinase from many different muscles was studied. The stimulatory effect of fructose bisphosphate appears to be lost whenever an efficient system for supply of oxygen to the muscles is developed (e.g. insects, squids, birds and mammals). This suggests that activation of pyruvate kinase is important in the co-ordinated regulation of glycolysis in anaerobic or hypoxic conditions, when the change in glycolytic flux during the transition from rest to activity needs to be large in order to provide sufficient energy for the contractile activity. However, lack of this effect in the anaerobic muscles of the birds and mammals suggests that another metabolic control may exist for avian and mammalian pyruvate kinase in these muscles.  相似文献

This article focuses on Neolithic skeletons associated with the first monumental cemeteries of Western Europe and specifically those of the Cerny culture (Paris Basin, France). While this cultural context is an agrarian one, numerous arrowheads derived from complete hunting equipment are present in numerous graves. The goal of this work is to evaluate the morphological and pathological differences among the individuals according to the presence of arrowheads in their graves. It is postulated that those buried with such artifacts practiced archery, unlike their counterparts. Only adult males were selected for study to limit the effect of non‐mechanical factors such as age‐ and sex‐related modifications. The corpus consists of 36 males reliably identified among the 101 Cerny adults currently available. Thirteen men are associated with arrowheads. Variations in morphology and robusticity are evaluated on the basis of the external geometric properties of the appendicular skeleton. Entheseal changes to fibrocartilaginous attachment sites of upper and lower limbs are also examined. Both nonpathological skeletal adaptations and pathological indicators are consistent and reveal significant differences between the two groups compared. Functional adaptation is observed in the forearm bones and the clavicle in response to mechanical loads, and enthesopathies suggest repeated forceful use of upper limb muscles. These osteological changes specifically reflect the higher intensity upper limb activity of the men buried with arrowheads and correspond with the medical data on known archers, suggesting that this specific forceful task is linked to the practice of archery. Molecular typing methods based on polymorphisms in single nucleotides and short tandem repeat motifs have been developed as epidemiological typing tools for Mycobacterium leprae. We have used a variable number tandem repeat method based on three variable loci to identify strain variation in archaeological cases of lepromatous leprosy. The panel of polymorphic loci used revealed unique profiles in five cases of leprosy, including those with identical SNP type and subtype. These were also different from profiles of three previously studied lepromatous skeletons. Whilst examination with SNP typing provides evidence for disease origins, dissemination and phylogeny, tandem repeat typing may be useful for studying cases from within a defined area or community where SNP types may be identical due to geographical constraints. We envisage the technique may be useful in studying contemporaneous burials such as those associated with leprosaria and will prove invaluable in authentication of ancient DNA analyses.  相似文献

The activities of some glycolytic and associated enzymes have been determined in the muscles of trout and carp to investigate the possibility that the discrepancies previously reported between lactate accumulation and anoxic tolerance in these two fish result from underlying differences in glycolytic potential. Steady state concentrations of certain glycolytic intermediates were also determined in freeze-clamped muscles from tankrested fish. The activities of hexokinase, phosphorylase and phosphofructokinase were approximately 2–3 times lower in carp than trout white muscles. Pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activities were 5 times lower in carp white muscle. The lower, broader pH optima of lactate dehydrogenase and pyruvate kinase from carp compared to trout muscles is thought to be correlated with the greater anoxic tolerance of the carp. Glycolytic enzyme profiles were markedly different between the red and white muscles of the rainbow trout but broadly similar, with the exception of hexokinase activity, for the corresponding muscles of the carp. The results are discussed in relation to what is known about anaerobiosis in these two species and the comparative physiology of red and white muscles in fish.  相似文献

Records of growth interruptions within spongiomorph and colonial skeletons provide a unique window into the disturbance dynamics of ancient shallow marine benthic environments at ecological time scales. The utility of growth-interruption surfaces for inferring the frequency of physical disturbance and the relative rate of sediment accumulation is illustrated by chaetetid skeletons from several Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) sequences of southeastern Kansas. Five different growth-interruption surfaces are recognized within these calcareous demos-ponges: (1) breaks in growth with apparent continuity of tubules across the surface, (2) surfaces of rejuvenation or recolonization with reorientation of tubules, (3) sediment-filled tubules or trapped sediment partings, (4) encrusted surfaces, and (5) biocorroded or bored surfaces. A single skeleton may contain several types of surfaces, and individual surfaces may change in character across the skeleton. The type and spacing of growth-interruption surfaces vary with chaetetid growth form. Together with growth form, these surfaces provide a basis for paleoen-vironmental interpretation.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle oxidative capacity, antioxidant enzymes, and exercise training   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
The purposes of this study were to determine whether exercise training induces increases in skeletal muscle antioxidant enzymes and to further characterize the relationship between oxidative capacity and antioxidant enzyme levels in skeletal muscle. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exercise trained (ET) on a treadmill 2 h/day at 32 m/min (8% incline) 5 days/wk or were cage confined (sedentary control, S) for 12 wk. In both S and ET rats, catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activities were directly correlated with the percentages of oxidative fibers in the six skeletal muscle samples studied. Muscles of ET rats had increased oxidative capacity and increased GPX activity compared with the same muscles of S rats. However, SOD activities were not different between ET and S rats, but CAT activities were lower in skeletal muscles of ET rats than in S rats. Exposure to 60 min of ischemia and 60 min of reperfusion (I/R) resulted in decreased GPX and increased CAT activities but had little or no effect on SOD activities in muscles from both S and ET rats. The I/R-induced increase in CAT activity was greater in muscles of ET than in muscles of S rats. Xanthine oxidase (XO), xanthine dehydrogenase (XD), and XO + XD activities after I/R were not related to muscle oxidative capacity and were similar in muscles of ET and S rats. It is concluded that although antioxidant enzyme activities are related to skeletal muscle oxidative capacity, the effects of exercise training on antioxidant enzymes in skeletal muscle cannot be predicted by measured changes in oxidative capacity.  相似文献

1. The activities of 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase were non-detectable in muscles of invertebrates and marine teleost fish; activities were found in muscles of amphibia, reptiles and mammals and also in an elasmobranch fish. Muscles were classified into three groups according to the activities of 3-oxoacid CoA-transferase: muscles with very low activities (less than 0.01 mumol x min-1 x g-1) which obtain energy for contraction from anaerobic glycolysis; muscles with low activities (greater than 0.01 less than 5 mumol x min-1 x g-1) which include insect flight muscles, muscles of other invertebrates and skeletal muscles of higher vertebrates; muscles with high activities of 3-oxoacid CoA-transferase (greater than 5 mumol x min-1 x g-1) which are characterised by continuous mechanical activity for long periods of time, e.g. heart, diaphragm, postural and some smooth muscles of mammals. 2. It is suggested that ketone bodies may be important fuels for muscles in the very low and low activity groups during starvation, when the muscle is at rest. The muscles in the high activity group may use ketone bodies when they are available in the blood to provide energy for mechanical activity. Since these muscles provide a continuous vital physiological function, they must always be provided with a fuel for respiration and, in a similar manner to brain, they may utilise either glucose or ketone bodies.  相似文献

The present study examined the effects of derivatives of galactosides and glucosides in a polysaccharide extract from Euphorbia kansui (Euphorbiaceae) on exercise-induced oxidative stress in mice. Exhaustive swimming exercise significantly increases the degree of lipid peroxidation in terms of malondialdehyde content and reduces the antioxidant activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Our findings revealed that chronic oral treatment with the extract elevates enzymatic activities of SOD and GPx accompanied by a corresponding decrease in malondialdehyde. The antioxidative activities of these compounds against exercise-induced oxidative stress are correlated with various activities such as reducing the production of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, enhancing antioxidative defenses, and increasing the production of SOD and GPx activity and expression in different tissues. These compounds may be involved in glycogen metabolism to meet the requirement of working skeletal muscles and act as antioxidants by terminating the chain reaction of lipid peroxidation to maintain the morphological stability of mitochondria in spinal motor neurons. These observations suggest that E. kansui has antioxidative and antifatigue properties and can be given as prophylactic and (or) therapeutic supplements for increasing antioxidant enzyme activities and preventing lipid peroxidation during strenuous exercise.  相似文献

In an overview of the problem of occupational muscle pain the evidence indicates that injury is more common the greater the load and the worse the posture in which the work is performed. The commonest are backstrains or ligament or joint damage due to overuse. Fatigue is associated with alterations in energy metabolites in muscle while pain is often due to microscopical damage to the cellular architecture. The progress of pathological changes in muscle following occupational injury may be similar to those seen in primary fibromyalgia (fibrositis) because of a final common pathway involving calcium-induced secondary damage. Occupational muscle pain frequently occurs in the muscles supporting the upper limb girdle and head in workers engaged in repetitively performing skilled manipulations or activities requiring high or sustained mental concentration. It is suggested that both occupational myalgia of this kind may be due to an imbalance in the use of muscles for postural activity (holding or supporting fine movements) compared to phasic use in dynamic work. While there are undoubtedly muscular indications of damage these may be secondary to alterations in (unconscious) central motor control mechanisms.  相似文献

Unusual osteolytic defects in eight skulls culled from over 4000 ancient South Dakota burials are presented, discussed briefly, and assigned to what we think is their most likely cause. Because these are collection skeletons, histological and microbiological and microbiological confirmation of interpretations concerning specific lesions are not possible. Corroboration of our opinions has been sought through radiographs and by expert consultation elsewhere. Although our opinions are interpretative and subject to rebuttal, they can serve as a base for future research if and when similar specimens are discovered elsewhere. In addition, these specimens are indicators of other than usual ancient skull pathology from a limited geographic area, representing people who lived there during a known time frame.  相似文献

The muscle fibres of the marine invertebrate Priapulus caudatus (Priapulida) are obliquely striated. Thin and thick filaments and characteristic dyad structures were recognized. The ultrastructural organization shows more resemblances with that of arthropod muscles than with that of annelids or molluscs. Pharmacological studies show that the muscles are provided with "primitive" C 16 type of acetylcholine receptors. Tubocurarine, succinylcholine and decamethonium do not block the effect of acetylcholine but potentiate this. This remarkable response may be due to inhibition of choline esterase. No distinct structural or functional differences were observed between somatic and visceral muscles, but the rectum showed evidence of the presence of unspecific amine receptors. The pharmacological responses resemble in the main those known from various simply organized invertebrate phyla. The priapulids, as suggested by Lang in 1953, may te survivors of a very ancient animal group.  相似文献

1. The activities of citrate synthase, NAD+-linked and NADP+-linked isocitrate dehydrogenase were measured in muscles from a large number of animals, in order to provide some indication of the importance of the citric acid cycle in these muscles. According to the differences in enzyme activities, the muscles can be divided into three classes. First, in a number of both vertebrate and invertebrate muscles, the activities of all three enzymes are very low. It is suggested that either the muscles use energy at a very low rate or they rely largely on anaerobic glycolysis for higher rates of energy formation. Second, most insect flight muscles contain high activities of citrate synthase and NAD+-linked isocitrate dehydrogenase, but the activities of the NADP+-linked enzyme are very low. The high activities indicate the dependence of insect flight on energy generated via the citric acid cycle. The flight muscles of the beetles investigated contain high activities of both isocitrate dehydrogenases. Third, other muscles of both vertebrates and invertebrates contain high activities of citrate synthase and NADP+-liniked isocitrate dehydrogenase. Many, if not all, of these muscles are capable of sustained periods of mechanical activity (e.g. heart muscle, pectoral muscles of some birds). Consequently, to support this activity fuel must be supplied continually to the muscle via the circulatory system which, in most animals, also transports oxygen so that energy can be generated by complete oxidation of the fuel. It is suggested that the low activities of NAD+-linked isocitrate dehydrogenase in these muscles may be involved in oxidation of isocitrate in the cycle when the muscles are at rest. 2. A comparison of the maximal activities of the enzymes with the maximal flux through the cycle suggests that, in insect flight muscle, NAD+-linked isocitrate dehydrogenase catalyses a non-equilibrium reaction and citrate synthease catalyses a near-equilibrium reaction. In other muscles, the enzyme-activity data suggest that both citrate synthase and the isocitrate dehydrogenase reactions are near-equilibrium.  相似文献

Palaeodemographical studies are founded on the assumption that the sex and age distribution of the skeletal sample reflects the constitution of the original population. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that the type and amount of information that may be derived from osteoarchaeological collections are related to the state of preservation of remains. This work proposes a new method to evaluate bone preservation, to identify age and sex biases in the preservation of human skeletal remains, and to assess whether differences in preservation patterns are more dependent on factors intrinsic or extrinsic to anatomical features of human bones. Three osteological collections and over 600 skeletons were observed. The state of preservation of human bones was assessed using three preservation indexes: the anatomical preservation index (API), the bone representation index (BRI), and the qualitative bone index (QBI). The results suggest that subadult skeletons are generally more poorly preserved and with bones less well-represented than adult skeletons. Among subadults, female and male skeletons have different patterns of preservation according to their age. This pattern of preservation depends on intrinsic anatomical properties of bones themselves, while external factors can only increase these differences in the state of preservation and representation of osseous remains. It is concluded from this that failure to recognize these differences may lead to misleading interpretations of paleodemography of past human populations.  相似文献

Tracing the evolution of ancient diseases depends on the availability and accessibility of suitable biomarkers in archaeological specimens. DNA is potentially information-rich but it depends on a favourable environment for preservation. In the case of the major mycobacterial pathogens, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae, robust lipid biomarkers are established as alternatives or complements to DNA analyses. A DNA report, a decade ago, suggested that a 17,000-year-old skeleton of extinct Bison antiquus, from Natural Trap Cave, Wyoming, was the oldest known case of tuberculosis. In the current study, key mycobacterial lipid virulence factor biomarkers were detected in the same two samples from this bison. Fluorescence high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) indicated the presence of mycolic acids of the mycobacterial type, but they were degraded and could not be precisely correlated with tuberculosis. However, pristine profiles of C(29), C(30) and C(32) mycocerosates and C(27) mycolipenates, typical of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, were recorded by negative ion chemical ionization gas chromatography mass spectrometry of pentafluorobenzyl ester derivatives. These findings were supported by the detection of C(34) and C(36) phthiocerols, which are usually esterified to the mycocerosates. The existence of Pleistocene tuberculosis in the Americas is confirmed and there are many even older animal bones with well-characterised tuberculous lesions similar to those on the analysed sample. In the absence of any evidence of tuberculosis in human skeletons older than 9,000 years BP, the hypothesis that this disease evolved as a zoonosis, before transfer to humans, is given detailed consideration and discussion.  相似文献
