Male parentage and queen mating frequency in the bumblebee <Emphasis Type="Italic">Bombus ignitus</Emphasis> (Hymenoptera: bombinae) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Kin selection theory predicts conflict between queens and workers in the social insect colony with respect to male production.
This conflict arises from the haplodiploid system of sex determination in Hymenoptera that creates relatedness asymmetries
in which workers are more closely related to the sons of other workers than to those of the queen. In annual hymenopteran
societies that are headed by a single queen, the mating frequency of the queen is the only factor that affects the colony
kin structure. Therefore, we examined the mating structure of queens and the parentage of males in a monogynous bumblebee,
Bombus ignitus, using DNA microsatellites. In the seven colonies that were studied, B. ignitus queens mated once, thereby leading to the prediction of conflict between the queen and workers regarding male production.
In each of the five queen-right colonies, the majority of the males (95%) were produced by the colony’s queen. In contrast,
workers produced approximately 47% of all the males in two queenless colonies. These results suggest that male production
in B. ignitus is a conflict between queen and workers. 相似文献

Colony structure and eusociality level of the sweat bee Lasioglossum (Evylaeus) duplex were studied in 2001 in Sapporo and Assabu, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Sakagami and his colleagues had also studied this species in Sapporo in 1957–1968. Brood size, sex ratio and queen–worker size dimorphism were geographically and temporally variable, indicating spatio-temporal variation at the eusociality level. Inseminated workers constituted only 7.9% of the populations in 1957–1968 Sapporo but about 60% in 2001 in Sapporo and Assabu. A few of the inseminated workers were believed to leave natal nests for independent colony founding. Thus, partial bivoltinism is likely in this sweat bee species. The presence of workers with developed ovaries and/or corpora lutea suggests the occurrence of worker oviposition. 相似文献

Parasitic nematodes of the genus Sphaerularia are known to infect and sterilize the overwintering gynes (potential queens) of bumblebees. We found that 70% of the overwintered
gynes of the hornet Vespa simillima collected using bait traps were infected and sterilized by Sphaerularia sp. This is the first solid record of parasitism by Sphaerularia in hornets (Vespa spp.).

Summary In queenright colonies of Apis mellifera, worker policing normally eliminates worker-laid eggs thereby preventing worker reproduction. However, in queenless colonies that have failed to rear a replacement queen, worker reproduction is normal. Worker policing is switched off, many workers have active ovaries and lay eggs, and the colony rears a last batch of male brood before dying out. Here we report a colony which, when hopelessly queenless, did not stop policing although a high proportion of workers had active ovaries (12.6%) and many eggs were laid. However, all these eggs and also worker-laid eggs transferred from another colony were policed. This unusual pattern was repeated eight weeks later by a second queenless colony made using worker bees from the same mother colony, which strongly suggests genetic determination.Received 19 May 2003; revised 11 September 2003; accepted 23 September 2003. 相似文献

Summary Interspecific facultative social parasitism is well known in ants and in bumble-bees, but it is rarer in wasps. This form of parasitism is traditionally considered to be an intermediate stage in the evolution of obligate interspecific parasitism, where the parasites are no longer able to nest alone. We report field and experimental observations of a newly discovered facultative parasitic relationship between two closely related free-living Polistes species: P. nimphus and P. dominulus. P. nimphus foundresses sometimes usurp the nests of the larger P. dominulus before worker emergence. The invading queen takes over the nest with abundant abdomen stroking on the nest surface and is accepted by workers if they emerge 6 or more days after usurpation. Morphometric comparisons show that the usurper species, though smaller than its victims, has morphological adaptations consisting of larger heads, mandibles and front femora relative to their body size that may give it an advantage during nest invasion. This strategy is likely to be taken only after the foundress loses her original nest because invading P. nimphus queens have lower reproductive success than they would have had on their own nest. Overall, we found that P. nimphus usurpers use strategies of invasion similar to those of two obligate parasites, suggesting that this may be an example of one of the pathways by which social parasitism evolved.Received 4 April 2003; revised 8 August 2003; accepted 14 September 2003. 相似文献

We have investigated the floral ontogeny of Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis (of the eucalypt group, Myrtaceae) using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Several critical characters for establishing relationships between these genera and to the eucalypts have been determined. The absence of compound petaline primordia in Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis excludes these taxa from the eucalypt clade. Post-anthesis circumscissile abscission of the hypanthium above the ovary in Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia is evidence that these three taxa form a monophyletic group; undifferentiated perianth parts and elongated fusiform buds are characters that unite Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis as sister taxa. No floral characters clearly associate Arillastrum with either the eucalypt clade or the clade of Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia. We gratefully acknowledge Clyde Dunlop and Bob Harwood (Northern Territory Herbarium) for collecting specimens of Allosyncarpia, and Bruce Gray (Atherton) for collecting specimens of Stockwellia. The Australian National Herbarium (CANB) kindly lent herbarium specimens of Eucalyptopsis for examination. Summary Polistes paper wasp species vary in their nest site selection, with some nesting in relatively exposed areas and others in protected cavities. Locating the nest sites of cavity dwelling species in natural habitat can prove difficult, and most behavioral studies on these species are therefore conducted using human-built structures. Since Hungerford and Williams (1912) and Rau (1929) noted the location of several P. fuscatus (Fabricius) nests in rodent burrows, there have been no published accounts of ground nesting Polistes species. I report the occurrence of a large, dense cluster of P. aurifer (Saussure) nests located within cracks in the dried soil of the Santa Monica Mountains of southern California, USA.Received 8 April 2003; revised 10 October 2003; accepted 31 October 2003. 相似文献

The maT clade of transposons is a group of transposable elements intermediate in sequence and predicted protein structure to mariner and Tc transposons, with a distribution thus far limited to a few invertebrate species. We present evidence, based on searches of publicly available databases, that the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae has several maT-like transposons, which we have designated as CbmaT elements, dispersed throughout its genome. We also describe two additional transposon sequences that probably share their evolutionary history with the CbmaT transposons. One resembles a fold back variant of a CbmaT element, with long (380-bp) inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) that show a high degree (71%) of identity to CbmaT1. The other, which shares only the 26-bp ITR sequences with one of the CbmaT variants, is present in eight nearly identical copies, but does not have a transposase gene and may therefore be cross mobilised by a CbmaT transposase. Using PCR-based mobility assays, we show that CbmaT1 transposons are capable of excising from the C. briggsae genome. CbmaT1 excised approximately 500 times less frequently than Tcb1 in the reference strain AF16, but both CbmaT1 and Tcb1 excised at extremely high frequencies in the HK105 strain. The HK105 strain also exhibited a high frequency of spontaneous induction of unc-22 mutants, suggesting that it may be a mutator strain of C. briggsae. 相似文献

P transposons belong to the eukaryotic DNA transposons, which are transposed by a cut and paste mechanism using a P-element-coded transposase. They have been detected in Drosophila, and reside as single copies and stable homologous sequences in many vertebrate species. We present the P elements Pcin1, Pcin2 and Pcin3 from Ciona intestinalis, a species of the most primitive chordates, and compare them with those from Ciona savignyi. They showed typical DNA transposon structures, namely terminal inverted repeats and target site duplications. The coding
region of Pcin1 consisted of 13 small exons that could be translated into a P-transposon-homologous protein. C. intestinalis and C. savignyi displayed nearly the same phenotype. However, their P elements were highly divergent and the assumed P transposase from C. intestinalis was more closely related to the transposase from Drosophila melanogaster than to the transposase of C. savignyi. The present study showed that P elements with typical features of transposable DNA elements may be found already at the base of the chordate lineage.

The cherry slugworm Caliroa cerasi is a significant destructive pest of sour cherries (Prunus cerasus) in Turkey. The potential of entomopathogenic fungi for controlling C. cerasi was evaluated. The effects of exposure methods and conidial concentrations (1 × 106, 1.5 × 106, 1 × 107 and 1.5 × 107 conidia/ml) on mature larvae of C. cerasi infected by Beauveria bassiana were investigated under laboratory conditions. Larvae sprayed directly with B. bassiana conidial suspensions and larvae exposed to B. bassiana-treated leaves resulted in 100% mortality within 2.90 and 2.77 days, respectively. The median lethal time (LT50) and days to mortality were highest in the 1.0 × 107 concentrations of conidia for both direct spray and leaf exposure. The present study suggests that B. bassiana has good potential for control of the cherry slugworm, C. cerasi. 相似文献

A pea rust fungus, Uromyces viciae-fabae, has been classified into two varieties, var. viciae-fabae and var. orobi, based on differences in urediniospore wall thickness and putative host specificity in Japan. In principal component analyses, morphological features of urediniospores and teliospores of 94 rust specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum did not show definite host-specific morphological groups. In molecular analyses, 23 Uromyces specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum formed a single genetic clade based on D1/D2 and ITS regions. Four isolates of U. viciae-fabae from V. cracca and V. unijuga could infect and sporulate on P. sativum. These results suggest that U. viciae-fabae populations on different host plants are not biologically differentiated into groups that can be recognized as varieties.Contribution no. 184, Laboratory of Plant Parasitic Mycology, Institute of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Tsukuba, Japan 相似文献

Euglossa viridissima is an orchid bee that forms both solitary and multiple female nests, making it a suitable species for the study of factors
leading to diverse degrees of sociality in Euglossines. We conducted observations in eight reused nests (where a first generation
of bees had been produced) kept in artificial boxes from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Five nests were reused (reactivated)
by a single female (SFN), two nests reused by a mother and one daughter (MFN1) and one nest reused by the mother and two daughters
(MFN2). No single nest was reactivated by unrelated females. The number of foraging trips, their duration and the duration
of cell provisioning was not different between SFN and MFN. The overall production of cells per female was not different either
between both types of nest. However, in MFN although all females did lay eggs, there was a reproductive skew in favor of the
mother (95 and 45% of the brood produced in MFN1 and MFN2 respectively). She showed reproductive control of her daughters
through oophagy and displaying threatening behavior when the daughters tried to open a cell where she had laid an egg. Brood
losses to parasites (Anthrax sp. (Bom-byliidae) and Hoplostelis bivittata (Megachilidae)) were only found in SFN which possibly reflects and advantage of MFN in this respect. Our results coupled
with other studies in Euglossa, reveal that a wide range of social behaviors occur in this genus, from solitary and communal to primitive reproductive division
of labor. Multiple factors involving different levels of pressure imposed by food availability and parasites may favor such
a diverse range of nesting behaviors. Interestingly, female associations in E. viridissima seem a result of kin selection that is enforced by coercion from mother females on their daughters. More studies are needed
to shed light upon the social organization of Euglossa and other Euglossines and on their phylogenetic relationships in order to trace the origins of eusociality in Apidae.

Novel<Emphasis Type="Italic"> eceriferum</Emphasis> mutants in<Emphasis Type="Italic"> Arabidopsis thaliana</Emphasis> 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We conducted a novel non-visual screen for cuticular wax mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. Using gas chromatography we screened over 1,200 ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS)-mutagenized lines for alterations in the major A. thaliana wild-type stem cuticular chemicals. Five lines showed distinct differences from the wild type and were further analyzed by gas chromatography and scanning electron microscopy. The five mutants were mapped to specific chromosome locations and tested for allelism with other wax mutant loci mapping to the same region. Toward this end, the mapping of the cuticular wax (cer) mutants cer10 to cer20 was conducted to allow more efficient allelism tests with newly identified lines. From these five lines, we have identified three mutants defining novel genes that have been designated CER22, CER23, and CER24. Detailed stem and leaf chemistry has allowed us to place these novel mutants in specific steps of the cuticular wax biosynthetic pathway and to make hypotheses about the function of their gene products.Abbreviations EMS Ethyl methane sulfonate - SEM Scanning electron microscopy - SSLP Simple sequence length polymorphism - WT Wild type 相似文献

The nucleotide sequences of ten SP11 and nine SRK alleles in Raphanus sativus were determined, and deduced amino acid sequences were compared with those of Brassica SP11 and SRK. The amino acid sequence identity of class-I SP11s in R. sativus was about 30% on average, the highest being 52.2%, while that of the S domain of class-I SRK was 77.0% on average and ranged from 70.8% to 83.9%. These values were comparable to those of SP11 and SRK in Brassica oleracea and B. rapa. SP11 of R. sativus S-21 was found to be highly similar to SP11 of B. rapa S-9 (89.5% amino acid identity), and SRK of R. sativus S-21 was similar to SRK of B. rapa S-9 (91.0%). SP11 and SRK of R. sativus S-19 were also similar to SP11 and SRK of B. oleracea S-20, respectively. These similarities of both SP11 and SRK alleles between R. sativus and Brassica suggest that these S haplotype pairs originated from the same ancestral S haplotypes. 相似文献

Invasive species trigger biodiversity losses and alter ecosystem functioning, with life history shaping invasiveness (Sakai
et al., Annu Rev Ecol Syst 32:305–332, 2001). However, pinpointing the relation of a specific life history to invasion success
is difficult. One approach may be comparing congeners. The two Palearctic pavement ants, Tetramorium sp.E (widely known as T. caespitum, Schlick-Steiner et al., Mol Phylogenet Evol 40:259–273, 2006) and T. tsushimae have invaded North America (Steiner et al., Biol Invasions 8:117–123, 2006). Their life histories differ in that T. sp.E has separate single-queened colonies but T. tsushimae multi-queened colonies scattered over large areas (Sanada-Morimura et al., Insect Soc 53:141–148, 2006; Schlick-Steiner et al.,
Mol Phylogenet Evol 40:259–273, 2006; Steiner et al., Biol Invasions 8:117–123, 2006). Comparison of the genetic diversity in the entire native and non-native ranges will elucidate the invasion histories. Here,
we present 13 and 11 microsatellites, developed for T. sp.E and T. tsushimae, respectively, and characterize all for both species.
