ABSTRACT.
  • 1 Flying Coleoptera were sampled with light traps from the tree canopy of lowland alluvial rain forest in Brunei, Borneo.
  • 2 Adult chrysomelid beetles were found to carry significantly less skeleton relative to their overall mass than those of any family other than herbivorous scarabaeids (subfamily: Rutelinae). Xylophagous lucanids and cerambycids and dung-feeding scarabaeids (subfamilies: Aphodiinae and Scarabaeinae) carried as large a proportion of skeleton by mass as predatory carabids and cicindelids.
  • 3 Skeletal production requires the commitment of assimilated nitrogen to chitin and proteins. Adequate nitrogen is more readily available to predators, carrion or dung-feeders, and xylophages (given enough time) than to leaf-chewing chrysomelids, which are also environmentally exposed to predatory attack. Female chrysomelids were found to carry a larger number of mature eggs/insect than those of any other family. A larger proportion of their mass was represented by eggs than skeleton, as reproductive compensation for reduced skeletal protection.
  • 4 It was estimated that a chrysomelid beetle required approximately 43% of the nitrogen incorporated by a predatory carabid of the same mass, whereas xylophagous cerambycids and lucanids would need between 84% and 98% of that in the predator.

Abstract.
  • 1 There was little overlap in the species composition of carabid beetle assemblages sampled below 450 m and above 800 m on an altitude transect and the first axis of a DECORANA ordination was closely correlated with altitude (r11= 0.93, P < 0.001), probably reflecting the differing temperature requirements of different species.
  • 2 Life-cycle strategies of two low-altitude species, found predominantly below 600 m, and two species caught above 600 m a.s.l., have been determined, using mandible wear to identify whether the females breed in the calendar year that they emerge as adults or in the year following.
  • 3 Nebria salina has an annual cycle at 630 m. Pterostichus madidus and Calathus fuscipes were both biennial at altitudes above 300 m although predominantly annual at low altitude. N.gyllenhali was biennial above 600 m and it is not known whether it is able to switch to an annual cycle at low altitude.
  • 4 Both N.salina and N.gyllenhali ceased activity soon after emergence, an adaptation which preserves their mandibles from wear.
  • 5 At altitudes of 305 m and 430 m, P.madidus and C.fuscipes entered the breeding season with 33% and 56% reduction in mandible tip length, possibly reducing their reproductive output.
  • 6 The necessity for relatively sharp mandibles on entry into the breeding season may restrict the capacity of carabids to respond to a temperature change by switching from annual to biennial cycles, and vice versa, adding support to the suggestion that carabids are more likely to respond to climate change by shifting distributions than by physiological adaptation.

Polyphagous predators (e.g. Araneae, Carabidae and Staphylinidae), collected from spring barley fields during 1981-85, were examined by either gut dissection or a R. padi-specific antiserum in enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in order to detect predation of Rhopalosiphum padi during the aphids' establishment and exponential growth phases. Overall 18% of c. 3000 carabids dissected were shown to feed on R. padi during the aphids' pre-peak period. No overall relationship was found between percentage carabids with R. padi in the diet and peak R. padi densities. Relatively high proportions of Bembidion spp. (particularly B. lampros) and Pterostichus cupreus fed on R. padi during the aphids' establishment phase, and proportions of those predator taxa containing R. padi increased with increasing R. padi densities in both high and low aphid density years. P. melanarius and Harpalus rufipes mainly fed on R. padi during the aphids' exponential growth phase. Overall 11% of c. 1350 predators examined in ELISA gave positive reactions to the R. padi antiserum. Relatively high proportions of linyphiid and lycosid spiders were positive throughout the aphid pre-peak period. Several Acari, Opiliones, Trechus spp. (Carabidae), Philonthus spp. (Staphylinidae), Cantharidae and Chilopoda were positive mainly during the aphids' exponential growth phase. Sample sizes were small, however. Very few of the Bembidion spp. tested in ELISA were positive compared with those examined by gut dissection. The maximum period of R. padi protein (antigen) detection in B. lampros was related to temperature, i.e. 8.5 h at 30°C, 20.5 h at 20°C and 34.5 h at 10°C, respectively. It is suggested that the rate of R. padi protein digestion in B. lampros is faster at higher temperatures than the rate of elimination of prey solids from the guts. Several key predators (in this case B. lampros, P. cupreus and linyphiid spiders) which are abundant in spring cereal fields at a time when R. padi emigrants arrive in the crop and which feed on R. padi during the aphids' establishment phase, are identified. The results are compared with those from similar investigations elsewhere with predators of Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 Four lakes in central Florida each received a different weed control treatment consisting of herbicide and/or different stocking ratios of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.).
  • 2 Submersed vegetation was eliminated by grass carp within 6 months In Lake Orienta and within 14 months in Clear Lake. Because Little Lake Fairview, treated with herbicide and a smaller stocking ratio of grass carp, retained abundant vegetation levels over the first two study years, grass carp which had been introduced initially were replaced with a greater number of fish at the beginning of the third year. Submersed vegetation was subsequently eliminated in this lake within LO months. Aquatic vegetation was reduced but not eliminated in Lake Mann which was treated with herbicide only.
  • 3 Where macrophytes were removed there tended to be increased bottom dissolved oxygen, higher and more stable total alkalinity values, increased turbidity, lowered transparency, higher specific conductivity and increased chlorophyll levels. Significant increases in pH were probably due to low water levels resulting from a severe drought rather than weed control. Low water also affected specific conductivity. Annual means for nutrients did not differ significantly between years in the four lakes.

  • The performance of seedlings is crucial for the survival and persistence of plant populations. Although drought frequently occurs in floodplains and can cause seedling mortality, studies on the effects of drought on seedlings of floodplain grasslands are scarce. We tested the hypotheses that drought reduces aboveground biomass, total biomass, plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and specific leaf area (SLA), and increases root biomass and root‐mass fraction (RMF) and that seedlings from species of wet floodplain grasslands are more affected by drought than species of dry grasslands.
  • In a greenhouse study, we exposed seedlings of three confamilial pairs of species (Pimpinella saxifraga, Selinum carvifolia, Veronica teucrium, Veronica maritima, Sanguisorba minor, Sanguisorba officinalis) to increasing drought treatments. Within each plant family, one species is characteristic of wet and one of dry floodplain grasslands, confamilial in order to avoid phylogenetic bias of the results.
  • In accordance with our hypotheses, drought conditions reduced aboveground biomass, total biomass, plant height, number of leaves and leaf area. Contrary to our hypotheses, drought conditions increased SLA and decreased root biomass and RMF of seedlings. Beyond the effects of the families, the results were species‐specific (V. maritima being the most sensitive species) and habitat‐specific. Species indicative of wet floodplain grasslands appear to be more sensitive to drought than species indicative of dry grasslands.
  • Because of species‐ and habitat‐specific responses to reduced water availability, future drought periods due to climate change may severely affect some species from dry and wet habitats, while others may be unaffected.

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 The pteromalid Trichilogaster acaciaelongifoliae (Froggatt) causes galls to develop in the place of inflorescences during the reproductive phase of its host Acacia longifolia (Andr.) Willd. (Fabaceae). After being introduced to South Africa during 1982 and 1983, this wasp reduced the reproductive potential of A. longifolia by >89% when only 50% of the branches on a tree were galled. In addition, vegetative growth of galled branches was reduced by 53% when the vacated galls had desiccated.
  • 2 The wasp is able to manipulate its host so effectively because: (a) the dry mass of developing galls was significantly greater than that of the corresponding reproductive organs, peaking in spring (September) when galls were 25 times the mass of unfertilized inflorescences. (b) The large biomass diverted to gall production is accounted for by a high proportion (66–73%) of multiple-chambered galls. The dry mass of multiple-chambered galls was significantly greater than that of both single-chambered galls and pods. (c) The extent of biomass diversion to gall production was relatively greater during the earlier part of the reproductive season, enhancing stress on the host. (d) The wasp sometimes forced the plant to produce up to 200% more galls per branch than the normal quota of inflorescences. This phenomenon, called forced commitment, further increases stress on the host plant. (e) Galls constituted up to 21% and 40% of the dry and wet biomass of above-ground parts of infested trees, respectively. This caused breakage and mortality of large branches and stems. (f) Reproduction in A. longifolia has been shown elsewhere to be so energy consuming that vegetative growth is strongly inversely related to pod production. Because the stress from galling by T. acaciaelongifoliae coincides with and replaces reproduction with a greater stress, successful reduction of both reproduction and vegetative growth are achieved.
  • 3 This biological control programme is the first in which a gall-forming hymenopteran has been used to control a weed. Since the effects of gall-formers are indirect compared with those of insects attacking vegetative plant parts, their potential as biocontrol agents has been underrated. This research provides ecologically based guidelines for the future selection of such agents.

  • Shade avoidance is expected to be favoured under moderate light. However, in previous studies, shade avoidance was highest in the deepest shade, despite the fact that the plants incur the costs of shade avoidance without the benefits of being exposed to increased light.
  • We performed shading experiments under different light intensities to understand: (i) how shade avoidance traits of Penthorum chinense could peak in moderate light, and (ii) if there was a trade‐off between plant height and allocation of seeds along the light gradients.
  • Penthorum chinense increased shade avoidance traits such as height per total dry mass as the amount of light decreased. Side stem number per total dry mass of P. chinense decreased as shade became deeper, from full light to low light. Regressions on seed mass fraction and height were significant with a linear model (y = ?0.0006x + 0.1338). There were more resources allocated to seeds under low light than under moderate light.
  • Penthorum chinense increased shade avoidance traits with the decrease in light amount, as found in previously studied species. There was a trade‐off between height and production of more seeds. The reproductive strategy of P. chinense was to increase seed mass fraction under low light more than under moderate light. This species might be able to expand established populations by both rhizomes and seeds under low light environments.

Abstract.
  • 1 The interaction between coleopteran predators and baculovirus-infected larvae was studied in the laboratory and the field in order to assess the potential role of predators in the dissemination of a nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV).
  • 2 Preference tests using three carabid species, Harpalus rufipes De Geer, Pterostichus melanarius Illiger and Agonum dorsale Pont, showed no evidence of discrimination between healthy and diseased larvae of the cabbage moth Mamestra brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) as prey items.
  • 3 Virus infectivity was maintained after passage through the predator's gut. NPV mortality ranged from 97% to 20% when test larvae were exposed to faeces collected immediately after and 15 days post-infected meal respectively.
  • 4 The potential for transfer of inoculum in the environment was estimated in the laboratory by soil bioassay. Carabids continuously passed infective virus to the soil for at least 15 days after feeding on infected larvae.
  • 5 Field experiments showed that carabids which had previously fed on diseased larvae transferred sufficient virus to the soil to cause low levels of mortality in larval populations of the cabbage moth at different instars.

Through phylogenetic analysis of seven genes, we show that there have been at least six independent entries into intertidal habitats in the history of bembidiine carabids, in the ancestors of: (i) Orzolina Machado, (ii) Bembidion (Desarmatocillenus Netolitzky), (iii) Bembidion laticeps (LeConte) + palosverdes Kavanaugh & Erwin, (iv) Bembidion laterale (Samouelle), (v) Bembidion umi Sasakawa and Bembidion quadriimpressum (Motschulsky) (which may represent two separate entries), and (vi) B. nigropiceum (Marsham). The following lineages are widely separated within the subtribe Bembidiina: Orzolina is sister to the genus Ocys Stephens; subgenus Desarmatocillenus appears to be sister to all Bembidion Latreille excluding subgenus Phyla Motschulsky; B. laticeps + B. palosverdes is a clade in the Bembidion series; B. laterale is a member of the Princidium Motschulsky complex; B. umi and B. quadriimpressum are related to the Nearctic Clade of the Ocydromus Clairville complex; B. nigropiceum is sister to B. praeustum Dejean among sampled species. There are three separate lineages of ocean‐shore bembidiines that are known to prey on amphipods, and adults of these lineages [Bembidion (Desarmatocillenus), B. laterale, and B. mandibulare Solier] have unusually wide heads with long mandibles. Also common among independent lineages restricted to ocean shores are prominent front angles of the prothorax, larger numbers of setae on the elytral disc, a notable sinuation in the margin of each elytron near its apex, and short, wide mesotarsi. The reasons for the repeated evolution of these features are not evident. Our results also suggest that inland species of the Nearctic Clade may have arisen from an ocean‐shore ancestor. The close genetic similarities between the gravel river shore dwelling B. praeustum and the intertidal specialist B. nigropiceum suggest that the striking morphological adaptations of B. nigropiceum to the intertidal zone arose rapidly. We make one nomenclatural change: we resurrect the subgenus Lymneops Casey to accommodate B. palosverdes and B. laticeps.  相似文献

  1. Farmland habitats comprise an arrangement of cropped, uncropped and natural vegetation among the farms. Despite the differences in these habitats' features, generalist highly mobile predators are more likely to explore them in time and space.
  2. We investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of the species of Dolichopodidae (Diptera) in organic vegetable farms because they are one of the most abundant generalist highly mobile predators in Brazilian agroecosystems.
  3. We simultaneously sampled the abundance of Condylostylus Bigot and Chrysotus Loew adults (both Dolichopodidae) in the crop, fallow areas, agroforests and forest fragments within five organic farms for 2 years.
  4. Predators preferred open-field habitats to agroforests and forest fragments. Probably, open-field habitats present more opportunities to prey foraging, resulting in higher population densities.
  5. To the extent that abiotic conditions become more restrictive during the dry season, agroforests and forests act as breeding sites and shelter, thereby maintaining the predators' populations in the overall farmland habitat.
  6. Both predatory genera occupy habitats with distinct features across time, forming a dynamic and contiguous population unit within the farm. Therefore, conservation biological control strategies in organic crops should consider the role of agroforests and forest fragments in species conservation beyond the plot level.

  • Dry/wet cycling driven by water level fluctuation in wetlands may strongly influence the destiny of seeds. However, how dry/wet cycling affects spore survival and germinability in peatland bryophytes is poorly understood.
  • Six peatland bryophytes, three hummock- and three hollow-dwelling Sphagnum species, were chosen as study species. We tested the effects of dry (60% air RH)/wet (waterlogging) cycle frequency (once per 12, 8 or 4 days for low, medium or high, respectively) and ratio (3:1, 1:1 or 1:3 dry:wet time per cycle) on spore germinability, viability, dormancy percentage and protonema development.
  • Dry/wet cycling significantly reduced spore germination percentage and viability and slowed protonema development in all Sphagnum species, being more pronounced with higher dry/wet cycling frequencies. The hummock species S. capillifolium and S. fuscum had higher spore germination percentage after the continuous dry treatment, while the hollow species S. angustifolium, S. squarrosum and S. subsecundum showed the opposite response, compared to the continuously wet treatment. Except for S. squarrosum, spore viability was higher after the dry than after the wet treatment. Spore viability and dormancy percentage were higher after a dry/wet ratio of 1:3 than after ratios of 3:1 and 1:1.
  • Our study shows that both germinability and viability of bryophyte spores are reduced by dry/wet cycling (especially when frequent) in peatlands. This emphasizes the need to ensure constant water levels and low frequencies of water level fluctuation, which are relevant in connection with wetland restoration, to promote Sphagnum spore survival and establishment in peatlands after disturbances.

Application of diazotrophic cyanobacteria, Anabaena variabilis, as biofertilizer for rice cultivation has a beneficial effect on crop productivity and maintenance of soil fertility. However, periodic applications of herbicides used to obtain high crop productivity are not only detrimental to weeds but to biofertilizer strains of cyanobacteria also. Therefore, research was undertaken to isolate four herbicide resistant strains (Arozin-R, Alachlor-R, Butachlor-R and 2,4-D-R) and a multiple herbicide resistant strain (MHR) of natural isolates of A. variabilis exhibiting resistance against these common rice field herbicides. The outdoor survivability of mutant strains and the productivity of rice crop (IR-36) were evaluated by inoculating the wild type and herbicide resistant mutant strains of A. variabilis in the presence and absence of recommended field dosages of test herbicides. No difference in survival and biofertilizer potentials of the herbicide resistant strains was observed in herbicide treated or in untreated conditions. Highest survivability (87%) was exhibited by MHR relative to other mutants. Highest growth and grain yield (76%) were recorded in plants treated with MHR as compared to uninoculated control rice plants. In conclusion, the mutant strains of A. variabilis had stable resistance to herbicides under outdoor conditions in flooded soils. Not only did the herbicide resistance strains increase growth of rice relative to the uninoculated pots, they were more beneficial for rice growth than the wild type strain.
