The attraction of the blowfly Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera: Calliphoridae) to single synthetic compounds, blends and authentic odours was investigated in a wind tunnel. A total of 1850 C. vicina (1750 females and 100 males) were tested. A comparison of male and female responses showed significant differences in attraction between the sexes. Females were more attracted than males to liver odour. The attraction of females lay in the ranges of 0–22% for single compounds, 26–64% for synthetic blends and 58–88% for authentic odours. Dimethyl trisulphide was the most attractive single compound. Significant improvement in attraction was achieved with blends and a three‐component lure, consisting of dimethyl trisulphide, mercaptoethanol and o‐cresol, was found to be the best solution for field trapping of C. vicina. Authentic odours from dead fish and mice were significantly more attractive than liver and the three‐component blend, and the blend and liver were similarly effective as attractants. Field tests support the results of the wind tunnel study and a high number of C. vicina were caught in funnel traps. Overall, 99.1% of the specimens caught were females. 相似文献

The flight responses of 750 female Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are investigated in a wind tunnel bioassay. The attraction of C. vicina towards dead mice and seven different synthetic lures made from dimethyl trisulphide, mercaptoethanol and O‐cresol is compared. Responses towards natural odours and the three‐component synthetic kairomones depend on the flies' ovarian egg developmental status. The natural and three‐component lures also induce similar age‐dependent responses, although the dead mice lure yields a significantly higher attraction. Oriented flight increases with the number of chemicals in the synthetic kairomone; one‐, two‐ and three‐compound lures induce 13–25%, 32–43% and 62% attraction, respectively. Responses to one‐component lures are not significantly influenced by egg developmental status, whereas blends of two or three components are. Attraction levels increase in a stepwise manner both across egg developmental categories and with the number of compounds. The results suggest that the attractiveness of synthetic kairomones is influenced not only by the blowflies' physiological state, but also by the complexity of the lure. 相似文献

The behaviour of 650 female Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) was examined in a wind tunnel using odour, in combination with six artificial visual stimuli, ranging from a simple black square to a three‐dimensional model of a dead mouse. The carcasses of laboratory mice were used to provide a natural odour and visual source, and a blend consisting of dimethyl trisulphide, mercaptoethanol, and o‐cresol was used to provide a synthetic lure. Significant differences were found in attraction to these odour sources: 90% of the flies oriented upwind to the natural source and 62% to the synthetic lure. No significant differences were found in upwind orientation towards different visual stimuli, but flies showed significantly more landings if the visual cues provided a vertical contrast against the background. A horizontal contrast gave no difference in landing rate compared to treatments without visual cues. In a field study, the blowfly genera Pollenia, Calliphora, and Lucilia were caught. The overall blowfly catch was significantly higher when an odour lure was present (Pollenia: 3×, Calliphora: 15×, Lucilia: >79×). A significant three‐way interaction between visual cue, genus, and gender was found. The saprophagous Lucilia and Calliphora showed a gender‐specific response to visual stimuli, whereas the parasitic Pollenia did not. A 2:1 female:male sex ratio was found for Calliphora spp. and a 12:1 sex ratio for Lucilia spp. The data suggest that landing responses of male and female saprophagous blowflies, and consequently trap catches, result from olfaction, but also from gender‐specific visual responses when under the influence of odour. 相似文献

Traditionally the calculation of accumulated degree days or hours (ADD or ADH) involves the concept of a minimum threshold temperature below which development ceases. Hence in fluctuating conditions, where temperatures drop below this threshold, there may be periods of time when development is taken to be zero. This has important implications when the calculation of postmortem interval (PMI) is based on the ADD or ADH of larval dipterans. Normal development of larvae of the blowflies Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy and C. vomitoria L. (Diptera: Calliphoridae) at 20 degrees C was interrupted by cold episodes. The expectation was that total development time would increase by the period at low (therefore no development) temperature but the total ADD or ADH should be the same as non-cold treated cohorts. The results, however, showed that total ADH for both species decreased linearly with increasing temperature with no evidence of any minimum threshold temperature effect. The increased ADH at low temperatures may be due to either continued but reduced development or a delay in development restarting after the cold episode. Use of ADH in PMI estimations has shortcomings particularly during the winter period where low temperatures are involved or where there are sudden summer cold spells during the development period. As blowfly development progresses from egg to pupa such errors will be compounded. 相似文献

The significance of brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula Kerr (Diprotodontia: Phalangeridae) carcasses to the succession and production of Diptera species and its relevance to fly strike management in Tasmania, Australia was examined. Calliphora stygia (Fabricius), Lucilia sericata (Meigen) and Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were found to be the most abundant and Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) always the least abundant (< 1%) of the putative primary fly invading species to emerge. Carcasses that were left for up to 15 days in the field before being exposed to flies for 2 days also acted as breeding sites for large numbers of all primary fly species, with the exception of L. cuprina. Ordination analysis revealed no relationship between possum carcasses according to their length of exposure but did show significant negative associations between the number of putative secondary invaders (Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Chrysomya varipes (Macquart) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and putative tertiary flies (Hydrotaea rostrata Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Muscidae)) to the number of C. vicina or C. stygia to emerge. There was enormous variability in the numbers of secondary/tertiary fly species to emerge from carcasses (0-11 450) that negatively correlated with the proportion of all flies to emerge that were primary, and with the mean size of adult L. sericata. Although carcass temperatures, especially those with a large larval population, were elevated, this did not appear to result in significant pre-adult fly mortality. The most important primary fly strike species L. cuprina was only found in insignificant numbers, whereas three other members of the fly strike fauna C. stygia, L. sericata and Ch. rufifacies did use possum carrion as an important breeding resource, but left implications for fly strike management inconclusive. 相似文献

To elucidate the mechanisms of inactivation of the ecdysiostatic peptide trypsin-modulating oostatic factor (Neb-TMOF) in the blue blowfly Calliphora vicina, we investigated its proteolytic degradation. In homogenates and membrane and soluble fractions, this hexapeptide (sequence: NPTNLH) was hydrolyzed into two fragments, NP and TNLH, suggesting the involvement of a proline-specific dipeptidyl peptidase. The dipeptidyl peptidase activity was highest in the late larval stage. It was purified 240-fold from soluble fractions of pupae of mixed age and classified on the basis of several catalytic properties as an invertebrate homologue of mammalian dipeptidyl peptidase IV (EC 3.4.14.5). Fly dipeptidyl peptidase IV has a molecular mass of 200 kDa, showed a pH optimum of 7.5–8.0 with the chromogenic substrate Gly-Pro-4-nitroanilide, and cleaved other chromogenic substrates with penultimate Pro or, with lower activity, Ala. It liberated Xaa-Pro dipeptides from the N-terminus of several bioactive peptides including substance P, neuropeptide Y, and peptide YY but not from bradykinin, indicating that the peptide bond between the two proline residues was resistant to cleavage. Fly dipeptidyl peptidase belongs to the serine class of proteases as the mammalian enzyme does; the fly enzyme, however, is not inhibited by several selective or nonselective inhibitors of its mammalian counterpart. It is suggested that dipeptidyl peptidases exert a regulatory role for the clearance not only of TMOF in flies but for other bioactive peptides in various invertebrates. Arch. Insect Biochem. Identification of host volatile compounds attractive to codling moth Cydia pomonella, a most important insect of apple, will contribute to the development of safe control techniques. Synthetic apple volatiles in two doses were tested for antennal and behavioural activity in codling moth. Female antennae strongly responded to (Z)3‐hexenol, (Z)3‐hexenyl benzoate, (Z)3‐hexenyl hexanoate, (±)‐linalool and E,E‐α‐farnesene. Two other compounds eliciting a strong antennal response were the pear ester, ethyl (E,Z)‐2,4‐decadienoate, and its corresponding aldehyde, E,E‐2,4‐decadienal, which is a component of the larval defence secretion of the European apple sawfly. Attraction of codling moth to compounds eliciting a strong antennal response was tested in a wind tunnel. Male moths were best attracted to a blend of (E,E)‐α‐farnesene, (E)‐beta‐farnesene and ethyl (E,Z)‐2,4‐decadienoate. The aldehyde E,E‐2,4‐decadienal had an antagonistic effect when added to the above mixture. 相似文献

- 1. 1. The development of thermotolerance has been shown to protect blowfly flight muscle mitochondrial function from damage resulting from an LD50 in vivo heat dose.
- 2. 2. The principal sites of the damage have been studied using specific inhibitors of the respiratory chain, rotenone and antimycin A, together with substrates that stimulate respiration through the different complexes.
- 3. 3. Complex I was identified as the primary site for heat damage. State III respiration was inhibited following the LD50 in vivo heat dose, and uncoupling with FCCP did not restore respiration to control levels, indicating that the respiratory enzymes were inactivated. The development of thermotolerance protected this site from heat damage.
- 4. 4. In contrast, G3-P stimulated respiration was the same in control, LD50 in vivo treated controls and LD50, in vivo treated thermotolerant mitochondria, and significantly higher than state III respiration of LD50 in vivo treated controls. This suggested that respiration through G3-P dehydrogenase, Co enzyme Q and Complex III is not damaged. However, as G3-P stimulated respiration of coupled mitochondria from LD50 in-vivo treated flies was markedly reduced (El-Wadawi and Bowler, 1995. J. exp. Biol. 198: 2413–2421), phosphorylation at complex III may be inhibited also.
- 5. 5. Ferrocyanide stimulated respiration through cytochrome c-Complex IV was also inhibited in LD50 in vivo treated flies, as compared with unheated control mitochondria. However, thermotolerance protected this site also from heat damage.

1. Freezing was lethal in the eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of the blowflies Calliphora vicina R-D. and Calliphora vomitoria (L.), but varying degrees of supercooling were found. 2. Cold resistance (as determined by their supercooling capacity) was greatest in eggs (to c. -25 degrees C), and moderate in other life stages (range -7 to -13 degrees C), which was evident from the distributions of their supercooling points. 3. Water contents of all life stages varied from 63% to 77% of fresh weight; pupae of C. vomitoria contain the smallest proportion of water. No relationship between the amount of body water and supercooling ability was detected. 4. Glucose was the major compound in all life stages of C. vicina, with a maximum concentration of 8.22 micrograms mg-1 fresh weight in the adults. In addition, five other potential cryoprotectants occurred in concentrations greater than 0.1% of fresh weight. No correlation between solute concentration and supercooling was observed. 5. Both C. vicina and C. vomitoria have sufficient cold hardiness to avoid lethal freezing in sheltered habitats in southern Britain, which may render diapause unnecessary in both species. 相似文献

Abstract. The ontogeny of the cuticular hydrocarbons of three dipterans of importance to forensic entomology, Calliphora vomitoria (Linné), Calliphora vicina (Robineau-Desvoidy) and Protophormia terraenovae (Robineau-Desvoidy) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), was explored using gas chromatography analysis. The stages examined ranged from eggs to 8-day-old adults. Cuticular hydrocarbon profiles revealed that odd linear alkanes dominate in all three species. Short-chain carbon compounds in larvae and post-feeding larvae were seen to evolve to long-chain carbon compounds in pupae and adults. Discriminant analysis of cuticular hydrocarbon profiles showed a clear differentiation among the different stages (larvae, post-feeding larvae, pupae and adults) and within stages, according to the age of individuals. This study concluded that the postmortem interval can be determined from the composition of cuticular waxes in Calliphoridae in forensic situations. 相似文献

Entomopathogenic fungi infect insects via penetration through the cuticle, which varies remarkably in chemical composition across species and life stages. Fungal infection involves the production of enzymes that hydrolyse cuticular proteins, chitin and lipids. Host specificity is associated with fungus–cuticle interactions related to substrate utilization and resistance to host‐specific inhibitors. The soil fungus Conidiobolus coronatus (Constantin) (Entomophthorales: Ancylistaceae) shows virulence against susceptible species. The larvae and pupae of Calliphora vicina (Robineau‐Desvoidy) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Calliphora vomitoria (Linnaeus), Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and Musca domestica (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Muscidae) are resistant, but adults exposed to C. coronatus quickly perish. Fungus was cultivated for 3 weeks in a minimal medium. Cell‐free filtrate, for which activity of elastase, N‐acetylglucosaminidase, chitobiosidase and lipase was determined, was used for in vitro hydrolysis of the cuticle from larvae, puparia and adults. Amounts of amino acids, N‐glucosamine and fatty acids released were measured after 8 h of incubation. The effectiveness of fungal enzymes was correlated with concentrations of compounds detected in the cuticles of tested insects. Positive correlations suggest compounds used by the fungus as nutrients, whereas negative correlations may indicate compounds responsible for insect resistance. Adult deaths result from the ingestion of conidia or fungal excretions. 相似文献

Abstract. To examine the species composition of flies breeding in carrion in the field, the carcasses of mice and quail were exposed on sheep farms in the South West of England. Calliphora vicina was the dominant species of Diptera; 19,294 individuals emerged from 175 of the 241 infested carcasses recovered. Lucilia sericata emerged from only 39 of the infested carcasses, at a median of 10 adults per infested carcass. Other species of Lucilia present were L.ampullacea, L.caesar and L.illustris. The highest number of L.sericata emerged from carcasses placed in open pasture, the highest number of C.vicina emerged from carcasses in hedgerow, whereas the highest numbers of L.caesar, L.ampullacea and L.illustris emerged from carcasses in woodland. The duration of exposure of carcasses in the field was negatively related to the size of the adult L.sericata which emerged and, in woodland and hedgerow habitats, to the number of L.sericata which emerged. These data indicate that the larvae of L.sericata in carcasses experience significant levels of competition and that the intensity of this competition may be sufficient to reduce the numbers of L.sericata able to emerge successfully. The size distributions of female L. sericata which emerged from carcasses or which were caught as adults in the field showed only a small degree of overlap, suggesting that only a relatively small proportion of the wild L.sericata population emerge from carcass breeding sites. The results are discussed in relation to the development of new approaches to the control of blowfly strike of sheep. 相似文献

Calcium distribution during egg development in Calliphora vicina has been measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. When female flies are fed meat, their calcium content rises and then remains stable throughout egg development. As the ovaries accumulate calcium, there is a corresponding decrease in the calcium content of the Malpighian tubules but not in any other tissues. Tracer studies with 45Ca indicate that calcium absorption and excretion continue throughout much of the egg cycle.
It is concluded that calcium absorption by female meat-fed flies exceeds the demands of the developing ovaries, and that appreciable amounts of calcium are excreted by the Malpighian tubules. In addition, the tubules may store calcium for later movement to the ovaries. Some of the practical problems associated with demonstrating such a storage role for the Malpighian tubules are discussed. 相似文献

Abstract. Females of the blowfly, Calliphora vicina , showed an increase in the free-running period (γ) of their locomotor activity rhythm when transferred from continuous darkness (DD) to continuous 'dim' light (LL) at an irradiance below about 0.03 Wm-2 . Transfer to LL of this intensity also caused a reduction in the duration of the active phase (α) of the cycle. Transfer to 'bright' light (>0.03 Wm2 ), however, lead to arrhythmicity. Data suggest that constant light of this intensity does not 'stop' the circadian pacemaker but imposes behavioural arrhythmicity at a more superficial level. 相似文献

Many insect species can contribute to crop pollination; however, most growers remain highly dependent on the managed honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) for this service. The European Blue Blow Fly Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy, 1830 is one species with potential use as a pollinator. It occurs worldwide and is easy to rear. Caged trials conducted within a hybrid carrot (Daucus carota L.) seed crop found C. vicina to be an effective pollinator. Seed yield (number and weight) from field‐grown carrot plants caged with C. vicina, but excluding all other large flower visitors (body width > 3 mm), was similar to seed yield from uncaged plants in the presence of honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) and other insects. In contrast, caged plants without C. vicina produced 10‐fold less seed. Under open field conditions, C. vicina spent an average of 71.0 s per umbel compared to 54.4 s for honey bees; however, under caged conditions, C. vicina spent more time on average per umbel (128.9 s). Counts of C. vicina and honey bees on umbels outside of cages and C. vicina inside cages found that honey bees were most abundant on days with maximum temperature > 25°C, while C. vicina was more abundant on cooler days around 20°C. C. vicina may therefore be a useful pollinator of crops grown in isolation cages for plant breeding purposes as well as in open fields when climatic conditions are less favourable for optimal honey bee activity. 相似文献

Abstract .Protein-fed Calliphora vicina , F1 offspring of wild flies in two cages with lower and higher fly densities showed variable delay in starting oocyte vitellogenesis at ambient semi-natural temperatures in warm July–August weather in 1996 and 1997 at Durham in northern England (54°45' N). The high-density flies in 1996 showed no delay, in that the thermal sum (degree-days) experienced was 133, comparable to 18°C constant, assuming the lower threshold for egg maturation to be 5°C. Low-density cages and flies in a large outdoor cage (2 m3 ) in both years showed delays in production of first eggs of 34 days (thermal sum 293 degree-days) in 1996 and 32 days (396 degree-days) in 1997, and longer delays for other individuals. Delays in egg production at low densities relative to high densities seem to be a group effect of unknown mechanism. 相似文献

The occurrence of precocious egg development in forensically important calliphorid species has previously been reported; however, the frequency of occurrence in both wild and captive colonies, and the consequent effects on developmental studies and post-mortem interval (PMI) estimates, are largely unknown. A PMI estimate based on samples developed from precocious eggs could be extended by the entire period of embryogenesis, which at 22 °C would result in a significant error of around 24 h. This study examined the occurrence of precocious egg development in Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) wild-caught and captive-bred adults by investigating the presence of larvae in the adult female genital chamber and by monitoring hatching times of entire batches of eggs throughout embryogenesis, respectively. A total of 8.82% of gravid wild-caught females contained a larva in the genital tract (i.e. a precocious egg). This indicates that all specimens collected should be considered potentially precocious for the purpose of PMI estimation. Less than 2.55% of a batch of eggs laid by captive females were precocious; protocols for minimizing the effect of precocious eggs on developmental studies are suggested. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The blowfly, Calliphora vicina Meigen (Diptera: Calliphoridae), displays a maternally induced larval diapause. Progeny of adults exposed to short days enter diapause if the larval temperature is 15C or below; exposing adults to long days, or larvae to temperatures above 15C, results in non-diapause. By keeping progeny from short-day parents at the parental temperature of 23.5C for various lengths of time before transfer to 11C, it could be shown that the diapause-averting effect of high temperature operates in the late wandering stage of larva, possibly at the moment of the decision for the brain-ring gland complex to release PTTH/ecdysone at the diapause/non-diapause stage.
Although photoperiodic induction in the blowfly is maternal, previous work had shown that the larvae were also slightly sensitive to photoperiod. From the present study it is evident that also the eggs are photo-sensitive. 相似文献
