The attraction of the blowfly Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera: Calliphoridae) to single synthetic compounds, blends and authentic odours was investigated in a wind tunnel. A total of 1850 C. vicina (1750 females and 100 males) were tested. A comparison of male and female responses showed significant differences in attraction between the sexes. Females were more attracted than males to liver odour. The attraction of females lay in the ranges of 0–22% for single compounds, 26–64% for synthetic blends and 58–88% for authentic odours. Dimethyl trisulphide was the most attractive single compound. Significant improvement in attraction was achieved with blends and a three‐component lure, consisting of dimethyl trisulphide, mercaptoethanol and o‐cresol, was found to be the best solution for field trapping of C. vicina. Authentic odours from dead fish and mice were significantly more attractive than liver and the three‐component blend, and the blend and liver were similarly effective as attractants. Field tests support the results of the wind tunnel study and a high number of C. vicina were caught in funnel traps. Overall, 99.1% of the specimens caught were females.

Analysis of volatiles from rumen digesta by gas chromatography linked antennogram recordings from Stomoxys calcitrans (L) (Diptera: Muscidae) antennal receptor cells revealed about 30 electrophysiologically active constituents, the most important of which is dimethyl trisulphide with a sensory threshold in the femtogram range. The behavioural responses of S. calcitrans to five chemostimulants (dimethyl trisulphide, butanoic acid, p-cresol, oct-1-en-3-ol and skatole) were tested in a wind tunnel where activation and attraction of hungry flies to rumen volatiles were recorded. Dimethyl trisulphide, butanoic acid and p-cresol were found to attract S. calcitrans. This sensitivity to rumen volatile constituents, that also occur in animal wastes used for oviposition by Stomoxys spp., as well as in flowers used by stable flies as sources of nectar is discussed in the context of the behavioural ecology of these flies.

Electroantennograms (EAG) were recorded from, and behavior observed of female apple maggot flies, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Diptera: Tephritidae), in response to over 60 individual esters. For acetates through decanoates, 2 methylbutyrates, and isobutyrates, we tested homologous series of systematically altered chain lengths. Most of the compounds had been isolated from behaviorally active fractions derived from extracts of volatiles produced by host fruits of R. pomonella. For the acetates through hexanoates, maximum EAG amplitudes were elicited by esters with chain lengths of 9 carbons and for the heptanoates through nonanoates, by 10 carbon esters. Recovery time, or the rate at which the EAG trace returned to the baseline following maximum depolarization, was slowest for straight chain esters that were 9–11 carbons long. Branching of the chain by addition of a methyl group to either side of the ester resulted in a decline in amplitude and a faster recovery time. Compared to EAG results, only 5 esters (butyl and pentyl hexanoate; propyl and butyl heptanoate; propyl octanoate) were highly active in wind tunnel bioassays, demonstrating (1) the hazard of assigning significance to EAG-active compounds without accompanying behavioral data, but more importantly; (2) a high degree of olfactory specificity. Maximum behavioral response was contingent upon the following rules regarding size and structure of the molecule. The ester must (1) be a straight chain; (2) be 10–11 carbons in length; (3) have an acid portion of 6–8 carbons and an alcohol portion of 3–5 carbons. One of the active esters, butyl hexanoate, appears in significant concentrations in the headspace of host fruit and, because this ester elicits such a pronounced behavioral response, our results suggest that R. pomonella is adapted to perception of a compound that is typical of its hosts.

Identification of host volatile compounds attractive to codling moth Cydia pomonella, a most important insect of apple, will contribute to the development of safe control techniques. Synthetic apple volatiles in two doses were tested for antennal and behavioural activity in codling moth. Female antennae strongly responded to (Z)3‐hexenol, (Z)3‐hexenyl benzoate, (Z)3‐hexenyl hexanoate, (±)‐linalool and E,Eα‐farnesene. Two other compounds eliciting a strong antennal response were the pear ester, ethyl (E,Z)‐2,4‐decadienoate, and its corresponding aldehyde, E,E‐2,4‐decadienal, which is a component of the larval defence secretion of the European apple sawfly. Attraction of codling moth to compounds eliciting a strong antennal response was tested in a wind tunnel. Male moths were best attracted to a blend of (E,E)‐α‐farnesene, (E)‐beta‐farnesene and ethyl (E,Z)‐2,4‐decadienoate. The aldehyde E,E‐2,4‐decadienal had an antagonistic effect when added to the above mixture.

Adult females of the anautogenous blow fly Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were fed standardized meals of liquidized liver, in quantities shown to range around the minimum required to initiate yolk deposition. Females from each feeding regime were dissected at daily intervals between 4 and 11 days of age; the number and stage of development of all oöcytes were recorded. Once an initial threshold quantity of protein was ingested, yolk deposition was initiated in all available oöcytes. Subsequently, one of two distinct developmental pathways was followed: arrested development in all oöcytes at an early stage of yolk deposition, or more extensive yolk deposition followed by progressive oösorbtion and the maturation of small batches of eggs. The proportion of females showing oösorbtion relative to arrested follicular development increased with increasing protein meal size, suggesting that the difference in response may be triggered by a second protein threshold, either side of which the arrested development or oösorbtion pathways are followed. The behaviour observed may reflect strategies to maximize reproductive output in this short‐lived, resource‐limited insect species. Flies that display arrested development may have sufficient protein to mature few if any complete eggs, but may subsequently be able to mature a full egg‐batch if they obtain further protein meals; this possibility is offset by the risk of death before finding such a meal. Flies that show oöcyte development and oösorbtion produce smaller egg batches more quickly and hence have a higher probability of achieving at least some reproductive output. By initiating yolk deposition in all oöcytes, female L. sericata retain the potential to adopt either developmental pathway, depending on subsequent protein intake.

Cohorts of mass-reared adult femalePysttalia fletcheri, parasitoids of the melon fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae), were exposed to host-plant stimuli in a laminar airflow wind tunnel to analyze the cues used in host-habitat finding. Parasitoids hovered twice as frequently around plastic zucchini models emitting fresh cucumber odor as around models emitting clean air. The odor of decaying pumpkin was even more attractive, resulting in over a 10-fold increase in hovering, a 50-fold increase in landing, and a 150-fold increase in host-searching and probing behaviors compared to clean air. Fresh cucumber leaf odors were not attractive to the parasitoids, but decomposing leaves elicited a strong increase in hovering, landing, and searching behaviors. Plastic leaves which visually simulated cucurbit foliage did not in themselves significantly alter orientation behaviors, but the combination of leaf visual stimuli plus decaying leaf odors caused strong increases in hovering, landing, and searching. Fresh pumpkin odor and the odor of yeast-inoculated pumpkin were not as attractive to parasitoids as decaying leaf odors. Yeast isolated from decaying pumpkin and cultured on various sterile media were not substantially more attractive than clean air.

Abstract

The blend of volatile compounds emitted by tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum) infested with the potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae) has been studied comparatively with undamaged plants and aphids themselves. Aphid-infested plants were significantly more attractive towards Aphidius ervi than undamaged plants and aphids themselves. Oriented response towards host-damaged plant, from which aphids were removed just before running the bioassay, did not differ from that recorded for infested plants. Collection of the volatiles and analysis by gas chromatography revealed only quantitative differences between uninfested and aphid-infested plants. Nine compounds, α-pinene, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, α-phellandrene, limonene, (E)-β-ocimene, p-cymene, methyl salicylate, (E)-β-caryophyllene and an unknown compound, were emitted at higher levels from aphid-infested plants than from undamaged control plants, whilst no differences were noted for hexanal, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, and humulene (=α-caryophyllene). Synthetic standards of these compounds were tested in wind tunnel bioassays and all elicited a significant increase in oriented flight and landings on the target by the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi. (E)-β-caryophyllene resulted the most attractive towards female wasps. These results corroborate the hypothesis that the volatiles produced by the plant in response to aphid attack derive from both jasmonic and salicylic acid pathways, and are exploited by A. ervi as olfactory cues to locate its hosts.

Movements of mature male Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) (Diptera: Tephritidae) were observed individually in a wind tunnel under conditions of ‘cue-lure with wind’, ‘cue-lure with no wind’, ‘wind only’ and ‘no wind or cue-lure’. Further observations were made using a dense foliage array in the wind tunnel and a structured plume of cue-lure. Patterns of walking or flying were essentially the same in all of the first four treatments except that in the ‘cue-lure with wind’ treatment, over half of the flies moved in a consistent track upwind for at least 400 mm at some time during the first 5 min of observation. With clean wind, only 10% of the flies did this. The result was that mean net upwind displacement after 5 min in the ‘cue-lure with wind’ treatment significantly exceeded that in the other three treatments, the results of which did not differ significantly from each other. The upwind tracks were accomplished by either walking or flying (with or without stops) or by a combination of both. When the wind tunnel was filled with a dense foliage array, the results with cue-lure laden wind were similar to those obtained with the equivalent treatment without foliage, except that upwind tracks were predominantly in short stages. When flies were exposed to a structured plume of cue-lure odour (without foliage present), they did not apparently alter their behaviour on leaving or entering the plume, but some did make consistent upwind tracks while they were in the plume.

Fifty-six compounds from the odor of calling, sexually mature, laboratory reared males of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) were isolated by headspace trapping on Tenax columns and identified using GC/MS techniques (69 total compounds were detected). Electroantennogram responses (EAGs) to 54 of the 56 identified compounds as well as 5 analogs were tested on both sexes. Significant differences between the sexes in their responsiveness were found in 9 of the 54 identified compounds tested. There was no correlation between the amplitude of the EAG response and the relative abundance of compound identified from headspace analysis. Of the five major identified components, three elicited relatively small EAG responses, while two elicited large EAGs compared to the hexan-1-ol standard. The relative ranking of EAG responses were: methyl and ethyl hexenoates and hexanoates > C4–C6 esters and/or acetates > ethyl and methyl octenoates > monoterpenes > sesquiterpenes > C2–C5 acetates, alcohols and ketones. Behavioral bioassays on each of the five major identified components as well as a blend of six of the compounds showed some degree of attractancy to virgin females which in some cases approached the response to a pheromonal standard (male odors absorbed onto filter paper). These results are discussed in relationship to the insect's antennal sensitivity to putative pheromone components and/or allomonal components and to other reported C. capitata pheromone studies.

Electroantennograms (EAGs) were recorded from laboratory-reared, male and female Ceratitis capitata (medfly) in response to individual volatiles identified from ripe nectarines. Uniformity in EAG response between the sexes was observed for most test compounds. Only 10 volatiles, of the 44 nectarine volatiles tested, elicited significantly different EAG responses between the sexes. No correlation was observed between the magnitude of antennal responsiveness and the concentration of a particular volatile in the headspace odor of ripe nectarines. The most abundant (major) nectarine volatiles were among the least EAG stimulatory compounds tested. And certain minor and trace volatiles were the most potent compounds in eliciting EAGs. Moreover, the magnitude of antennal response to a nectarine volatile was related to the functional-group, chain-length, and unsaturation of the compound. The degree of potency of the compounds was as follows: six-carbon unsaturated aldehydes and alcoholsmethyl and ethyl hexanoates and octanoateshexenyl acetates and monoterpenes>shorter chain-length acetates and alcohols>lactones. Unsaturated aldehydes, alcohols, and acetates generally elicited larger EAGs than their saturated analogs, with the (E)-2-isomers being the most potent isomeric configurations. In addition, medfly antennae exhibited long recovery periods (i.e., >10 sec.) for the EAG tracings to return to baseline potential after stimulations with certain classes of compounds, e.g., C6 to C8 acid esters, monoterpenes, and hexen-1-ols. The potential adaptiveness to medflies for selective sensitivity to these volatiles is discussed.

Electroantennograms (EAGs) were recorded from unmated, laboratory-reared, male and female oriental fruit flies, Dacus dorsalis, in response to a range of between C1 and C12 carbon chain-length saturated and unaturated aliphatic alcohols and aldehydes, most all of which are known host-plant volatiles. Only two of the 35 compounds tested elicited significantly larger EAGs from female than male antennae. For the two functional-group series tested, aldehydes elicited responses greater than or equal to the responses to the alcohols. In general, the unsaturated alcohols did not elicit responses significantly different from the saturated alcohols. However, the unsaturated aldehydes, (E)-2-hexenal and 10-undecenal, elicited larger amplitude EAGs than their saturated analogs. EAGs were significantly greater for a particular carbon chain-length, with responsiveness to primary alcohols peaking at C6 and aldehydes peaking at C7. The (E)-2- monoenic alcohols peaked at C6, while the (E)-3-alcohols plateaued between C5 and C8. The greatest EAG responses of all compounds tested were elicited by the saturated and unsaturated C6 alcohols and aldehydes which are constitutents of the general green-leaf volatile complex that emanates from most plants. The potential adapative benefit of selective sensitivity to green-leaf volatiles is discussed in regards to foraging behaviors of oriental fruit flies.

Abstract. The stimuli and mechanisms mediating host location and host choice by the bee mite, Varroa jacobsoni (Oudemans), are currently unknown. It is shown that Varroa can use single clean‐air puffs and bee‐odour plumes in a wind tunnel as directional cues. Varroa turned nearly straight upwind in response to single 0.1‐s puffs of clean air directed at 90° to the their anterior‐posterior axis. They turned significantly further to their left side (104°) than to their right (76°), but showed no difference in latency to initiation of the turns (means of 63.3 ms vs. 62.6 ms, respectively). They also followed bee‐odour plumes in a wind tunnel. When released in odour and control plumes mid‐way between the plume's origin and the downwind end of the tunnel, mites responding to bee‐odour walked upwind in, or along the edge of, the odour plume with 38% making contact with the odour delivery tube; mites in clean air did not walk upwind along the air stream, and none made contact with the air delivery tube. Walking speeds were not different between the bee‐odour and control groups (0.28 vs. 0.29 cm s–1); there were also no differences in the turning rates (96.85 vs. 97.16 deg s–1 and 388.08 vs. 379.18 deg cm–1, respectively). Under all conditions, mites walked in a zigzag fashion.

Since the 1970s it has been known that the nursery pollinator Hadena bicruris is attracted to the flowers of its most important host plant, Silene latifolia, by their scent. Here we identified important compounds for attraction of this noctuid moth. Gas chromatographic and electroantennographic methods were used to detect compounds eliciting signals in the antennae of the moth. Electrophysiologically active compounds were tested in wind-tunnel bioassays to foraging na?ve moths, and the attractivity of these compounds was compared with that to the natural scent of whole S. latifolia flowers. The antennae of moths detected substances of several classes. Phenylacetaldehyde elicited the strongest signals in the antennae, but lilac aldehydes were the most attractive compounds in wind-tunnel bioassays and attracted 90% of the moths tested, as did the scent of single flowers. Our results show that the most common and abundant floral scent compounds in S. latifolia, lilac aldehydes, attracted most of the moths tested, indicating a specific adaptation of H. bicruris to its host plant.

Four volatile compounds emitted from fungus-infected date fruit,Phoenix dactylifera L., were identified using coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic recordings, coupled gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, electroantennographic assays of synthetic standards, and wind tunnel bioassays. These compounds were ethyl hexanoate, ethanol, acetaldehyde, and 2-phenylethanol. Wind tunnel bioassays showed that ethyl hexanoate was capable of stimulating upwind flight and landing on the source by mated female carob moths,Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller). Addition of both ethanol and acetaldehyde to ethyl hexanoate resulted in an increase in attraction to a level similar to that found for date fruits. No such effect was noted for additions of 2-phenylethanol at the dosages tested. In this study, it appears that ethyl hexanoate is a dominant olfactory stimulant and attractant for mated female carob moths, and represents a novel compound with regard to previously identified lepidopteran host odor attractants.

The behavior of parasitoidCampoletis sonorensis females to cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) leaf odor sources was examined in a wind tunnel bioassay. Parasitoids exhibited oriented flights to cotton but not to inert sources, and flew in significantly greater proportion to glanded cotton when compared to glandless cotton in choice tests. A relative lack of volatile terpenes in glandless cotton may account for response differences. Significantly more parasitoids flew to theG. hirsutum cultivar Tamcot CAMD-E than to the diploid cottonsG. arboreum andG. anomalum in choice tests. Differences in volatile chemical composition of the diploid cottons may account for these results. The data are discussed with regard to host habitat location.
