Mandibular growth of 42 rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Four groups of animals were defined according to dentitional age (i.e., infant, juvenile, adolescent, young adult). At each age growth was observed for a 24 week period. Since some animals were observed at more than one stage of development, 57 periods of growth were studied. The growth incremental data were collected by superimposing serial cephalograms on mandibular implants. Growth and remodeling of both the skeletal and dento-alveolar components of the rhesus mandible were greatest in the infant monkeys and were less in successive age groups. Posterior relocation of the ramus was noted in all age groups while bone deposition on the anterior and inferior borders of the mandibular body was greatest in the younger animals. The most pronounced dental changes also occurred in the younger animals while the dentitions of the adolescent and adult animals were generally more stable. This study demonstrates that the rate and direction of normal mandibular growth varies with the age of the animal. Furthermore, mandibular growth is quantified at four defined maturational levels to provide a set of values illustrating normal mandibular growth. These values can also be used as control data for experimental studies.  相似文献

Summary Epithelio–mesenchymal interactions are active during the development of the root of the tooth and are regulated by a variety of growth factors, such as fibroblast growth factors. FGF-2, 3, 4, and 8 have all been shown to play a role in the development of the crown of the tooth, but less is known about the factors that govern root formation, particularly FGF-2. The aim of this study was thus to elucidate the spatial and temporal expression of FGF-2 in the root of the developing tooth, as this growth factor is believed to be a mediator of epithelio–mesenchymal interactions. Parasagittal sections of the maxillary and mandibular arches of post-natal mice were utilized and the roots of the molar teeth were studied. Immunocytochemistry utilizing an antibody to FGF-2 was performed on sections of teeth at various stages of development. Intense immunostaining for FGF-2 was observed in differentiating odontoblasts at the apical end of the tooth and in the furcation zone of the developing root at all the stages examined. FGF-2 localization was also observed in cementoblasts on post-natal days 16, 20 and 24. The pattern of localization of FGF-2 in the developing root suggests that this growth factor may participate in the signaling network associated with root development.  相似文献

Raising progesterone concentrations in young adult mice by subcutaneous implants resulted in ovulation being blocked and the cessation of oestrous cycles. The effect of this treatment on the numbers and dynamics of preantral follicles during 36 days of treatment was studied using a compartmental model to analyse differential follicle counts. Changes in growth and/or death rates were detected at all stages of follicular development. An increased rate of growth through preantral stages was predicted in the treatment group when compared with the controls, but most of these follicles did not reach the antral stage of development as an increased death rate was observed at large preantral stages (stage IV). Antral follicles were formed in the treatment group, but all succumbed to atresia. Increased atresia in the antral population of follicles in the treatment group was observed directly.  相似文献

By means of morphometric techniques, peculiarities in formation of the hypophyseal-thyroid system during prenatal and early postnatal periods have been studied in lemmings (Dicrostonyx torquatus) from the Wrangel island at growth stages and at the peak of the population quantity. Folliculoformation rate, time when the organ reaches the definitive structure, periods for establishing connection with the regulating center--the anterior hypophyseal lobe, correlation of differentiation rates of histo- and ultrastructures of the organ distinctly react to changes in the density population of the animals. Periods of initiation of folliculoformation are early and comparable at both stages of the population cycles. However, further at the peak of the population quantity, an essential retardation in the development of both histo- and ultrastructures of the thyroid cells is observed; formation of the histostructure significantly overtakes differentiation of the ultrastructures composing its cellular elements. The follicular structure begins to form only in newborn animals, the folliculogenesis completes on the 1st-6th days of the postnatal period. At the stage of growth of the population quantity, the folliculogenesis lasts 2 days (the 15th-17th days of the prenatal development), the organ's structure becomes definitive on the 17th day, at the same period connections are established with the anterior hypophyseal lobe. The role of the thyroid hormones in formation of reprodactive and adaptive potencies of the organism at various stages of the population cycle is discussed.  相似文献

In this study the structure and development of the palate as observed in a cross-sectional collection of olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) skulls are described and analyzed using craniometric techniques. Considered are structural functional relationships among different parts of the palate, and between the palate and other parts of the craniofacial skeleton. Several inferences are drawn and speculated upon. These inferences are as follows: odontogenesis affects premaxillary growth the most during late fetal and early postnatal development; maxillary length is significantly affected by development and eruption of the maxillary dentition, whereas maxillary breadth is less affected by dental development. Growth of the palatine bones and nasopharyngeal airway is correlated with dentomasticatory changes; the developmental and functional significance of these correlations is unclear. Further inferences are that growth rates for each palatal component differ for each sex even though lengths of the components relative to total palatal dimensions show no sexual dimorphism. Also, it is determined that maxillary length remains constant, premaxillary length reduces and palatine length increases relative to total palatal length with growth.  相似文献

Summary

Palaemon longirostris and Crangon crangon larval and post-larval stages were collected intensively in two 24-h cycles during neap and spring tidal periods in a fixed station located in the mid-Mira estuary (southwest Portugal). In each case, on the previous day, horizontal distribution of larval stages was studied in a series of 20 stations from the mouth of the estuary to near freshwater. Horizontal distribution of the discrete instars of both species were similar, suggesting larval retention. Results from the 24-h cycles indicate a semilunar cycle of larval release activity, and an initial displacement of the larvae from the parental stock, as newly-hatched larvae concentrate in the surface layer of the water column on post-crepuscular ebbing tides. The sequence of larval stages tends to be progressively more dependent of the bottom layers, and the whole larval and post-larval development is accomplished within the estuarine boundaries. Larval release cycles, coupled with duration of development and progressive change in vertical position, induce mutual exclusion of different aged larvae, which may minimise cannibalistic behaviour and competition between larvae with different capabilities.  相似文献

Permanent maxillary canine teeth (C1) are appreciably larger in males than in females in most nonhominid Anthropoidea. Mandibular canines (C1) and mandibular first premolars (P3), against which C1 are sharpened in honing behavior, reflect commensurate sexual dimorphism. These three teeth constitute the canine dental complex. The canine complex crown metrics of seven mature genetically female rhesus Macaques, androgenized by prenatal exposure to testosterone propionate, were compared with a control sample (N = 12) for evidence of masculinization. The C1 and C1 were measured for clinical crown lengths (L) and mesiodistal and buccolingual widths. The functionally significant and highly dimorphic honing dimensions (HD), which approximate the honing surfaces of P3, were noted. In t-test comparisons, the C1 L and P3 HD in androgenized monkeys were significantly larger than those of the control group (P less than 0.05). Identical results were obtained with White's nonparametric ranking technique. Standardized lateral skull radiographs showing earlier dental formative stages were available for five of the seven animals, and these were compared with radiographs of control skulls. The developing C1 were longer and wider than in the controls. This was not reflected in the crown metrics of mature animals because of marked dental attrition. We concluded that androgens can masculinize the female rhesus canine complex, if given during critical periods of prenatal development. We hypothesize that genes encoding the male canine complex are normally activated by endogenous fetal androgens during such critical periods.  相似文献

Normal developmental events during human primary palate formation and alterations associated with cleft lip remain poorly defined. The purpose of this study was to analyze serially sectioned human embryos to identify morphological changes during normal palatal closure and alterations associated with failure of palatal formation. Normal and cleft embryos from the histological collection at the Congenital Anomaly Research Center at the University of Kyoto were studied and photographed for detailed evaluation. Seven serially sectioned cleft lip embryos of stages shortly after primary palate formation (Streeter-O'Rahilly stages 19, 20, and 22) with unilateral or bilateral clefts with varying degrees of clefting were studied. In the normal Kyoto embryos, initial nasal fin (epithelial seam) formation was observed between the medial nasal process and the lateral nasal and maxillary processes at stage 17. During stages 18 and 19, the nasal fin epithelium was replaced by an enlarging mesenchymal bridge, as the maxillary processes united with the medial nasal processes to form the primary palate. The most prominent features observed in the cleft embryos were a reduced thickness of mesenchymal bridging between the medial nasal and maxillary processes, with an excessive amount of epithelium at the junctions between these processes. With ingrowth of the maxillary processes, greater cell dispersion and apparent extracellular matrix accumulation were observed in the medial nasal region. During closure of the primary palate, terminal branches of the maxillary nerve crossed the mesenchymal bridge to the medial nasal region. The partial clefts had reduced maxillary ingrowth and smaller union areas with the medial nasal process. Detailed studies of experimental animal models are required to identify regional growth required for contact between the facial prominences, to clarify the mechanisms of mesenchymal ingrowth and epithelial displacement during palatal formation, and to identify local and/or general factors causing alterations that lead to primary palatal clefting.  相似文献

The morphological development, including the fins, body proportions and pigmentation, of laboratory-reared larval and juvenile Pangasianodon hypophthalmus was described and their behavioral features were observed under rearing conditions. Body lengths (BL) of larvae and juveniles were 3.0 ± 0.2 (mean ± SD) mm just after hatching, and 12.9 ± 1.1 mm on day 13, reaching 23.4 ± 1.8 mm on day 25 after hatching. Aggregate fin ray numbers (for caudal fin, principal soft ray number) attained their full complements in specimens larger than 12.8 mm BL. Notochord flexion began in yolksac larvae on day 0 (10.5 h after hatching), with teeth buds and barbels appearing with jaw formation in yolksac flexion larvae on day 1. Melanophores on the body increased with growth, with a broad vertical band forming on the lateral line and an oblique band extending from above the pectoral fin base towards the forepart of the anal fin during the postflexion larval and juvenile stages. Body proportions became relatively constant in juveniles, except for maxillary barbel length (MBL), which continued to decrease. Yolksac flexion larvae started feeding on day 2 with the onset of intense cannibalism. Yolks were completely absorbed by day 3, and cannibalism ended by day 6. Subsequently, fish displayed a schooling behavior with growth, preferring relatively dark areas during the juvenile stage.  相似文献

Immunocytochemical distribution of the atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) has been studied in the brain and pituitary of the anuran Rana esculenta during development and in juvenile animals. Using human ANF and rat α-ANF antisera, immunoreactive cell bodies and nerve fibers were revealed in stage II–III tadpoles and in successive larval stages. Soon after hatching, stages II–III, the ANF-like-immunoreactive elements were confined to the preoptic area-median eminence complex. During successive stages of development, new groups of ANF-immunoreactive cell bodies appeared. In larval stage VI, immunoreactive perikarya were found in the rostral part of the anteroventral area of the thalamus and numerous ANF-like-immunoreactive cells appeared in the pars distalis of the pituitary. In larval stages XIV and XVIII, the distribution of ANF immunoreactivity was virtually similar. The ANF-immunoreactive cells in the preoptic nucleus and in the pituitary pars distalis were comparatively more abundant than in stage VI. During the metamorphic climax (stages XXI–XXII), a new group of ANF-immunoreactive cell bodies appeared in the rostral part of the ventrolateral area of the thalamus. During this stage, ANF-immunoreactive fiber projections were found in the pars intermedia for the first time. However, the pars distalis cells were very weakly immunofluorescent. The pattern of ANF immunoreactivity in the brain of juvenile animals was very similar to that described for stages XXI and XXII, whereas the pars distalis cells showed no immunoreactivity. It is conceivable that, early during development, ANF-related peptides may be involved in the regulation of pituitary secretion by means of autocrine mechanisms or may act as a classic pituitary hormone. 1. Some organisms under variable predator pressure show induced antipredator defences, whose development incurs costs and may be associated with changes to later performance. This may be of especial relevance to animals with complex life histories involving metamorphosis. 2. This study examines the effect of predation environment, experienced both during embryonic and larval stages, on palmate newt (Triturus helveticus) metamorphosis. Newt eggs were raised until hatching with or without exposure to chemical cues from brown trout (Salmo trutta), and larval development was monitored in the presence or absence of the cues. 3. Exposure to predator cues during the embryonic stage resulted in higher growth rates at the larval stage, reduced time to metamorphosis and size at metamorphosis. Metamorphs also had narrower heads and shorter forelimbs than those from predator‐free treatments. In contrast, exposure to predator cues during the larval stage did not affect metamorph characteristics. 4. These results indicate that developing embryos are sensitive to predator chemical cues and that the responses can extend to later stages. Reversion of induced defences when predation risk ceased was not detected. We discuss the possible adaptive significance of these responses.  相似文献

Prepubertal ewe lambs were treated with empty or filled melatonin implants. The implants were placed s.c. at birth and pituitary responsiveness to various doses of LHRH, LH/FSH pulsatility and prolactin and melatonin secretion were examined at 10, 19, 28, 36 and 45 weeks of age. Control animals (N = 10) showed no consistent alteration in pituitary responsiveness to LHRH during development. Ewes treated with melatonin (N = 10) had puberty onset delayed by 4 weeks (P less than 0.03) but no effect of melatonin on LH or FSH response to LHRH injection was observed at any stage of development. In the control and melatonin-treated ewe lambs the responses to LHRH injection were lower during darkness than during the day at all stages of development. No consistent differences in LH or FSH pulsatility were observed between treatment groups or during development. Prolactin concentrations, however, failed to decrease at the time of puberty (autumn) in the melatonin-treated group. Melatonin-treated ewe lambs maintained normal rhythmic melatonin production which was superimposed on a higher basal concentration and showed the same increase in melatonin output with age as the control ewes. These results indicate that the delayed puberty caused by melatonin implants is not due to decreased pituitary responsiveness to LHRH or to dramatic changes in basal LH or FSH secretion.  相似文献

The present study investigates transsutural growth in vascularized and free calvarial bone grafts and notes the effects of such growth on craniofacial development. The temporalis myoosseous flap served as a model of vascularized graft. In ten 8-week-old dogs, a standardized skeletal defect, including a segment of the zygomatico-maxillary suture, was created. The defect was reconstructed with a vascularized graft in half the animals and a corresponding free graft in the remaining animals. Growth was assessed by means of serial cephalometric radiography and direct osteometry. Vascularized bone grafts demonstrated persistent transsutural growth following transplantation. Growth at the recipient site was preserved, resulting in less restriction of vertical maxillary development.  相似文献

Development in Veronica and Veronicastrum was studied to elucidate the growth patterns responsible for differences between their mature flowers. Nineteen floral dimensions were measured on buds from initiation to anthesis, and representative stages were recorded with the scanning electron microscope. Bivariate plots indicate the heterochronic changes responsible for the derived flower form of Veronica. The growth patterns of the gynoecium and androecium were little changed. The calyx of Veronica showed slower size increase at the early stages, but continued to grow after that of Veronicastrum had stopped. The most striking change occurred in the corolla lobes of Veronica, where growth was retarded until the beginning of style formation, but afterward was accelerated relative to that of Veronicastrum. The corolla tube of Veronica remained short due to a later onset of growth and slower enlargement later in development. Multigroup principal components analysis (M-PCA) was used to summarize the measurements. The distribution of points along M-PC 1 describes size increase during floral development. Along M-PC 2 the trajectories of the two taxa diverge after the beginning of style growth, while along M-PC 3 they differ from the earliest stages on, corroborating differences observed with the scanning electron microscope. M-PCA can thus be used to portray differences in patterns of floral development, facilitating simultaneous quantitative comparisons of two or more taxa.  相似文献

以5个不同发育阶段的胡杨(Populus euphratica Oliv.)个体为研究对象,观测记录了枝芽展叶物候、枝芽生长特征和叶形变化的空间分布规律。结果表明:不同发育阶段的胡杨个体以及同一个体树冠的不同层次,其枝芽生长及其展叶物候期表现出不同的时空特征。随着树龄的增加和树冠层次的增高(由基向顶),当年新生枝条长度、枝条叶片数和叶形指数逐渐减小,但叶面积和叶片干重逐渐增大。5个不同发育阶段胡杨个体均表现出展叶物候始于树冠顶层,依次向下结束于树冠基部;展叶物候期共性表现在枝芽萌动期均在4月上旬,起始展叶期集中在4月中旬,展叶终期则在5月上旬到下旬;树龄较大的个体其枝芽萌动期、起始展叶期、展叶终期较树龄较小的个体早;其枝芽萌动期到展叶终期的时间进程较树龄较小的个体短;不同发育阶段的个体枝芽萌动期出现的时间较为离散,起始展叶期和展叶终期出现的时间较为集中。相关分析表明,出叶周期与枝条长度、枝条叶片数量和叶形指数呈极显著正相关,与叶面积和叶片干重呈显著负相关。  相似文献

This paper is an analysis of normal craniofacial growth in adolescent crab-eating macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Eight female adolescent monkeys were used in this study. Their individual craniofacial growth was studied for a 24-month period utilizing tantalum implants and roentgenographic cephalograms. Throughout the observation period, each monkey consistently showed a class I molar relationship with a good overjet and overbite. The amount of anterior displacement of the maxilla and the mandible was significantly dominant compared to the vertical displacements at every observation period. The midface exhibited a maxillary differential growth pattern in which the premaxilla displaced superiorly and the posterior maxilla moved inferiorly, resulting in a counterclockwise rotation of the entire maxilla. Growth of the lower anterior teeth and alveolar bone compensated for the incremental vertical spaces which were induced by superior displacement of the premaxilla and inferior repositioning of the chin. In addition, the amount of anterior displacement of the upper and lower anterior teeth were significantly larger than that of the premaxilla and the chin. The dentocraniofacial growth pattern in Macaca fascicularis was quite similar to that seen in Macaca mulatta.  相似文献

Summary. Expression profiles of genes involved in cell wall metabolism and water transport were compared with changes in grape (Vitis vinifera L.) berry growth, basic chemical composition, and the shape, size, and wall thickness of cells within tissues of the berry pericarp. Expression of cell wall-modifying and aquaporin genes in berry pericarp tissues generally followed a bimodal expression profile with high levels of expression coinciding with the two periods of rapid berry growth, stages I and III, and low levels of expression corresponding to the slow-growth period, stage II. Cellular expansion was observed throughout all tissues during stage I, and only mesocarp cellular expansion was observed during stage III. Expansion of only exocarp cells was evident during transition between stages II and III. Cell wall-modifying and aquaporin gene expression profiles followed similar trends in exocarp and mesocarp tissues throughout berry development, with the exception of the up-regulation of pectin methylesterase, pectate lyase, two aquaporin genes (AQ1 and AQ2), and two expansin genes (EXP3 and EXPL) during stage II, which was delayed in the exocarp tissue compared with mesocarp tissue. Exocarp endo-(1→3)-β-glucanase and expansin-like gene expression was concurrent with increases in epidermal and hypodermal cell wall thickness. These results indicate a potential role of the grape berry skin in modulating grape berry growth. Correspondence: P. The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from Daucus sahariensis Murb . harvested at three different growth stages were characterized by GC/MS analysis. In total, 88 compounds were identified, with myristicin (29.8–51.7%), myrcene (6.7–31.1%), α‐pinene (11.6–14.8%), and limonene (5.3–11.5%) as main constituents. Monoterpene hydrocarbons were the most represented compounds in the oils of the plant samples collected during the flower‐budding and full‐flowering periods. On the contrary, during the fruiting stage, the oils were dominated by phenylpropanoids. The essential oils were subject of considerable variation in their composition during the various developmental stages, particularly concerning the content of myrcene that decreased significantly passing from the vegetative to the fruiting stage. Conversely, for myristicin, the opposite trend was observed. Furthermore, the essential‐oil yields were quite low during the flower‐budding phase (0.27%), but rapidly increased during plant development (0.63 and 0.68% for the flowering and fruiting phases, resp.).  相似文献

Staged human embryos and fetuses in the Carnegie Embryological Collection were morphometrically analyzed to show craniofacial dimensions and changes in spatial relations, and to identify patterns that would reflect normal developmental events during palatal formation. Normal embryos aged 7-8 weeks postconception (Streeter-O'Rahilly stages 19-23) and fetuses aged 9-10 weeks postconception, in eight groups with mean crown-rump (CR) lengths of 18-49 mm, were studied with cephalometric methods developed for histologic sections. In the 4-week period studied, facial dimensions increased predominantly in the sagittal plane with extensive changes in length (depth) and height, but limited changes in width. Growth of the mandible was more rapid than the nasomaxillary complex, and the length of Meckel's cartilage exceeded the length of the oronasal cavity at the time of horizontal movement of the shelves during stage 23. Simultaneously with shelf elevation, the upper craniofacial complex lifted, and the tongue and Meckel's cartilage extended forward beneath the primary palate. Analysis of spatial relations in the oronasal cavity showed that the palatomaxillary processes became separated from the tongue--mandibular complex as the head extended, and the tongue became positioned forward with growth of Meckel's cartilage. As the head position extended by 35 degrees, the cranial base angulation was unchanged and the primary palate maintained a 90 degrees position to the posterior cranial base. However, the sagittal position of the maxilla relative to the anterior cranial base increased by 20 degrees between stages 19 and 23. In the late embryonic and early fetal periods, the mean cranial base angulation of approximately 128 degrees and the mean maxillary position angulation of approximately 84 degrees were similar to the angulations previously shown to be present later prenatally and post-natally. The results suggest that human patterns of cranial base angulation and maxillary position to the cranial base develop during the late embryonic period when the chondrocranium and Meckel's cartilage form the primary skeleton.  相似文献
