The study of the organ of Corti is essential to assess the impact of underwater noise on cetaceans. While classical histology techniques (including EDTA decalcification) have been previously considered, the process is time consuming. Independently from the histological technique, one of the challenging steps after extraction and fixation of the samples is to decalcify the bone envelope to access the cochlea without damaging the soft tissues. Here, we propose to use a fast commercial decalcifier (RDO®). 93 ears from 11 different odontocetes species stranded in the Mediterranean, Spanish North Atlantic and North Sea were used to precisely determine the decalcification time. Depending on the tympanic-periotic volume of the species, the decalcification time ranged from several hours to a few days, allowing a subsequently faster observation of the cochlear structures through routine microscope techniques.  相似文献

The passive drag (Dp) of 218 competitive swimmers was studied and related to their performance level. To study this relationship, specific attention was given to anthropometric and joint laxity (JL) variations. The Dp was measured at 1.40 m.s-1, using a mechanical winch and a strain gauge with a load cell connected to a strain bridge. Swimmers were towed in a prone position holding their breath after a maximal inspiration. Buoyancy was evaluated by the hydrostatic lift (HL), i.e., the maximal weight just necessary to maintain the swimmer in a balanced position under the water after a maximal inspiration. The JL was assessed by a standard scoring system. The Dp was related mainly to the surface area (SA) (r = 0.73 and 0.53; P less than 0.01, for males and females, respectively). For a given SA, Dp was inversely related to the performance level. The JL explained 7% of the variability of Dp. On average, Dp measured after a maximal expiration, increases of about 22% SD 3% (P less than 0.01). This increase was related to individual vital capacities (r = 0.86, P less than 0.01). As Dp was mainly related to SA and HL, it is suggested that the body exerts a large pressure effect on the water. The contribution to performance might be related to the gliding phase of swimming.  相似文献

Energy cost of front-crawl swimming in women   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the energy cost of swimming per unit distance (Cs) at different velocities (v) and performance level, body size and swimming technique in women. A total of 58 females swimmers were studied. Three performance levels (A, B, C) were determined, ranging from the slower (A) to the faster (B, C). At level C and at 1.1 m.s-1, Cs,1.1 was reduced by 7% when directly compared to level B. The Cs,1.1 was reduced by 10% when calculated per unit of height (h) and by 37% when calculated per unit of h and hydrostatic lift (HL). For the whole group of swimmers, the equation regression was Cs,1.1 = 0.27 h-2.38 HL - 7.5 (r = 0.53, P less than 0.01). To evaluate the specific influence of arm length two groups of long- and short-armed swimmers were selected among swimmers of similar h and performance. The Cs was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) by 12%, SD 2.2%, for short-armed than for long-armed swimmers. To evaluate the influence of different types of swimming technique, two other groups of similar performance and anthropometric characteristics were selected. The Cs was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) by 12%, SD 4.5% for swimmers using for preference their legs rather than their arms. The Cs of the sprinters was 15.7%, SD 2% higher than that of the long-distance swimmers. For all groups, Cs increased with v on average by 8% to 11% every 0.1 m.s-1. These findings showed that Cs variations of these women were close to those previously demonstrated for men. Synopsis The behavioral capability of walleye pollock,Theragra chalcogramma free embryos and larvae to control vertical distribution was assessed by examining buoyancy during resting and swimming orientation and activity as they developed in complete darkness from hatching to first feeding readiness (1 to 7 d post hatching at 6° C). Free embryos exhibited positive geotaxis 1 d post hatching, actively swimming through a density gradient to remain in the lower water column. Activity increased with free embryo development and by 7 d post hatching, feeding-ready larvae reversed their vertical orientation, now exhibiting negative geotaxis as they migrated to the upper water column. The results indicate that even at the earliest developmental stages, walleye pollock possess the capability to control vertical distribution. Laboratory results are compared with patterns of vertical distribution observed in the sea.  相似文献

The specific status of Mesoplodon bowdoini Andrews is reviewed and new information on its morphology, reproduction, and distribution is presented. This species of beaked whale, known only from 35 specimens, has a southern, circumpolar distribution north of the Antarctic convergence, between 32° and 54°30'S. It shares with M. bahamondi Reyes, Van Waerebeek, Cárdenas and Yáñez from the south Pacific Ocean including New Zealand (this paper) and M. carlhubbsi Moore from the north Pacific, a number of morphological features such as prominential notches in the maxillary bones in the skull. It is less similar to M. stejnegeri True from the north Pacific and M. ginkgodens Nishiwaki and Kamiya from the tropical Indo-Pacific. Mesoplodon bowdoini can be distinguished from all other species of Mesoplodon by the shape of its teeth (male and female), and differences in the morphology of its skull, especially the proportions of the rostrum, separation of the nasals, the shape of the prominential notches, and the nature of the antorbital processes. The species' distinguishing external characteristics are: a robust body up to about 4.50 m long; a low melon and short, thick beak; an elevated jawline posteriorly; and a low, blunt-tipped, triangular dorsal fin. The occurrence of fetuses of M. bowdoini in May and September, and perinatal juveniles in May and June, indicates a summer-autumn breeding season in the New Zealand region; the length at birth is estimated at about 2.20 m.  相似文献

综述了近年来分子生物学标记技术在鲸类系统学研究中的进展。分子生物学证据支持鲸目与有蹄类之间有较近的亲缘关系,并支持鲸类的单系起源,但鲸类不同类群(须鲸类、抹香鲸类及不包括抹香鲸类的齿鲸类)之间的系统发生关系仍存在争议。抹香鲸类到底与须鲸类还是与其它齿鲸类有更近的亲缘关系,不同的分子生物学家所得到的结果并不一致。此外,分子生物学技术还被用于解决须鲸亚目和齿鲸亚目内科间以及科内种间的系统发生关系,特别是齿鲸亚目的海豚科、鼠豚科和淡水豚类。通过分子标记技术来研究鲸类种下的遗传结构是鲸类分子系统学研究中的一个新热点,使用的标记主要是mtDNA控制区、核DNA微卫星和主要组织相容性复合体(major histo-compatibilitv complex,MHC)等。  相似文献

Multiple sightings of a distinctive but unidentified species of beaked whale have been made in the eastern tropical Pacific. The unidentified whale has two color morphs: a conspicuously marked black and white form (judged to be larger), and a uniformly gray-brown form. Maximum length estimates have been 5–5.5 m. Other features include a relatively flat head, with a small, distinct melon; a moderately long beak; and a low, wide-based, triangular dorsal fin. On most animals the trailing edge of the dorsal fin is only slightly falcate and often appears straight. On the black and white morph, a broad white or cream-colored swathe originates immediately posterior to the dorsal surface of the head and runs posterio-ventrally on either side of the animal. The prevalence of scarring on the black and white animals suggests sexual dimorphism and that these larger, more conspicuously marked animals are adult males, while the smaller, browner, unscarred animals are females and young. Possibilities for identification include: 1) a well-marked race of a known Mesoplodon sp., 2) Mesoplodon (Indopacetus) pacificus or 3) an undescribed species.  相似文献

Ranging, the ability to judge the distance to a sound source, depends on the presence of predictable patterns of attenuation. We measured long-range sound propagation in coastal waters to assess whether humpback whales might use frequency degradation cues to range singing whales. Two types of neural networks, a multi-layer and a single-layer perceptron, were trained to classify recorded sounds by distance traveled based on their frequency content. The multi-layer network successfully classified received sounds, demonstrating that the distorting effects of underwater propagation on frequency content provide sufficient cues to estimate source distance. Normalizing received sounds with respect to ambient noise levels increased the accuracy of distance estimates by single-layer perceptrons, indicating that familiarity with background noise can potentially improve a listening whale's ability to range. To assess whether frequency patterns predictive of source distance were likely to be perceived by whales, recordings were pre-processed using a computational model of the humpback whale's peripheral auditory system. Although signals processed with this model contained less information than the original recordings, neural networks trained with these physiologically based representations estimated source distance more accurately, suggesting that listening whales should be able to range singers using distance-dependent changes in frequency content.  相似文献

Four species of beaked whales of the genus Mesoplodon regularly occur in the North Atlantic. These are Sowerby's Beaked Whale Mesoplodon bidens, Blainville's Beaked Whale Mesoplodon densirostris, Gervais Beaked Whale Mesoplodon europaeus and True's Beaked Whale Mesoplodon mirus. These four species differ in their distribution within this area. M. bidens is the most northerly recorded species followed by M. mirus. M. densirostris and M. europaeus both generally occur further south and their distributions cross the equator. The distribution of Mesoplodon species may relate to variations in water temperature.  相似文献

哺乳动物Y染色体短臂上的Sry 基因决定雄性发育方向。本研究参照哺乳动物Sry 基因保守区序列设计引物, 以非性别特异性的线粒体DNA 细胞色素b 基因作为阳性对照, 用PCR 扩增江豚、长喙真海豚等鲸类动物的Sry 基因片断并对其进行凝胶电泳分析来鉴定鲸类动物的性别。通过此方法对87 个已知性别鲸类动物标本的检验, 结果完全正确, 并进一步应用此方法成功地完成了另外33 个未知性别鲸类标本的性别鉴定。由此建立了一套简单、快速、可靠的鲸类动物的性别鉴定方法。  相似文献

Abstract: We evaluated the use of naturally occurring nose scars to identify individual sea otters (Enhydra lutris) in Simpson Bay, Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA. We spent 520 hours over 103 days conducting photo-identification surveys from June to August 2002 and 2003. Altogether, we identified 114 individuals. The number of sightings per individual ranged from 1 to 26, with an average of 3.3. The maximum number of sightings of an individual within a single year was 19. We saw 54 otters (47%)on >1 day, with an average of 8.1 sightings per individual for those seen more than once. We identified 8 individuals (19% of those identified in 2002) in both years. Males and otters of undetermined sex that we first sighted in June had the highest re-sighting rates. We considered 45% of all individuals encountered identifiable from nose scars. Nose scars were present in 63% (n = 19) of males, 45% (n = 45) of females, and 40% (n = 49) of otters of undetermined sex. Our results are similar to the results of photo-identification studies of other marine mammals, suggesting that this technique may be a useful tool for the individual identification of sea otters as well.  相似文献

为探讨团头鲂幼鱼(Megalobrama amblycephala)游泳行为对水流的响应规律,该文通过特制鱼类游泳行为测定装置,测定了团头鲂幼鱼在25℃,0、0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4m/s流速条件下的游速、游距、转角、至中心点的距离及游泳轨迹。结果表明:随着流速的增大,个体游速、游距及转角值均相应增大。0、0.1及0.2m/s流速组间的游速、游距及转角差异均不显著(P>0.05),但显著小于0.3和0.4m/s组别,且0.3和0.4m/s流速组之间差异均不显著(P>0.05);整个时间段内,个体至中心点的距离随流速增大并未呈现明显规律性,各流速间差异不显著(P>0.05),游速与游距呈显著线性正相关,而与转角呈显著线性负相关,与至中心点的距离则无相关性;游泳轨迹随水流增大趋向复杂化。  相似文献

Synopsis Swimming speed and swimming path of goldfish and tetra larvae were studied in aquaria containing food patches composed of decapsulated cysts and immobilized nauplii of Artemia salina or sparsely distributed prey. The mean swimming speed of starved larvae in the medium without food was about four times higher than the speed of larvae feeding in a patch. Satiated larvae swam about 1.5 times slower than hungry fish. Consumption of single prey items by starved larvae caused the following sequence of swimming responses: handling pause (cessation of swimming), slow swimming in a restricted area, and fast swimming (approximately twice as fast as hungry larvae before encountering food) accompanied by a widening of the area searched (area increased searching). Mean swimming speed was constant over a broad range (101–103 ind·1–1 of food density, although at extreme (high or low) values of food density it depended on swimming responses of the predator. Frequency of visits to the different parts of the aquarium strongly depended on encounters of hungry fish with food particles or patches.  相似文献

Beaked whales of the genus Mesoplodon are characterized by the presence of a single pair of sexually dimorphic tusks. Variation in the position and shape of these tusks was examined in four sympatric species and was found to be consistent with the hypothesis that these differences may have evolved to aid species recognition between sympatric and otherwise morphologically similar species of this genus.  相似文献

鲸类是一类次生性的水生哺乳动物,其陆生祖先大约53~56Ma从陆地返回海洋。为了适应水下的弱光环境,鲸类的光感受器以视杆细胞为主,视锥细胞功能大多退化,缺乏辨别颜色的能力,然而鲸类视觉退化的分子机制尚不清楚。本文选择在视锥细胞中表达且对光传导级联反应起重要作用的GNAT2和CNGB3基因,通过PCR扩增、测序以及在数据库中下载已有的基因序列,共获得8个鲸类代表性物种的同源序列。MEGA6.0软件比对发现侏儒抹香鲸和抹香鲸的GNAT2基因分别在148位和1012位插入了1个碱基 A,而抹香鲸的CNGB3分别在554位和1407位有1个碱基的缺失,导致提前终止密码子出现;另外,小须鲸CNGB3基因在1525 ~1527位出现了提前终止密码子,提示鲸类的这两个基因可能为假基因。通过I-TASSER在线预测GNAT2和CNGB3蛋白的三维结构,发现出现移码突变终止密码子的位置均位于这两个基因的重要功能域。另外,运用PAML软件的Branch model分析表明发生假基因的鲸类物种GNAT2和CNGB3基因出现选择压力放松,且假基因化可能是一个近期事件。侏儒抹香鲸、抹香鲸以及小须鲸的GNAT2和CNGB3基因出现假基因可能与其深潜习性以及完全的水生生境导致其色觉功能丢失相关。此外,Free-ratio model分析发现其他鲸类的ω值接近于1,说明GNAT2和CNGB3基因出现了选择压力放松,这可能是长期适应水生生境视觉退化的结果。  相似文献

Primers were developed for the amplification and sequencing of the mitochondrial control region of Galápagos land (Conolophus) and marine (Amblyrhynchus) iguanas. Sequences were obtained for four land iguana samples from two islands and for 28 marine iguana samples from three islands. A series of 70–80 bp tandem repeats adjacent to the control region are described and preliminary quantification of intra‐ and interspecific sequence divergence is included.  相似文献

Eight tagged sea otter (Enhydra lutris) pups in central Prince William Sound, Alaska, weighed 6–15 kg at the time of separation from their mother. Four pups weighing 15 kg were able to forage successfully on their own. Three pups weighing ≤9 kg had negligible chances of survival and apparently were abandoned by sick females. Abandonment of a pup may reduce the burden on a sick female, enabling recovery and subsequent reproduction. One of the three sick females that abandoned a pup in this study recovered and pupped again. Abandonment of pups should occur most often in populations where females are stressed by poor food resources. Reassociation with a previous offspring, as observed once in this study, also may occur most frequently in food-limited populations where reproductive failures are most common and pup survivorship is significantly increased by additional maternal assistance.  相似文献

We measured the following variables to investigate the effects of fasting and temperature on swimming performance in juvenile qingbo (Spinibarbus sinensis): the critical swimming speed (Ucrit), resting metabolic rate (ṀO2rest) and active metabolic rate (ṀO2active) of fish fasting for 0 (control), 1, 2 and 4 weeks at low and high acclimation temperatures (15 and 25 °C). Both fasting treatment and temperature acclimation had significant effects on all parameters measured (P<0.05). Fasting at the higher temperature had a negative effect on all measured parameters after 1 week (P<0.05). However, when acclimated to the lower temperature, fasting had a negative effect on Ucrit until week 2 and on (ṀO2rest), (ṀO2active) and metabolic scope (MS, (ṀO2active)(ṀO2rest)) until week 4 (P<0.05). The values of all parameters at the lower temperature were significantly lower than those at the higher temperature in the identical fasting period groups except for (ṀO2rest) of the fish that fasted for 2 weeks. The relationship between fasting time (T) and Ucrit was described as Ucrit(15)=−0.302T2−0.800T+35.877 (r=0.781, n=32, P<0.001) and Ucrit(25)=0.471T2−3.781T+50.097 (r=0.766, n=32, P<0.001) at 15 and 25 °C, respectively. The swimming performance showed less decrease in the early stage of fasting but more decrease in the later stage at the low temperature compared to the high temperature, which might be related to thermal acclimation time, resting metabolism, respiratory capacity, energy stores, enzyme activity in muscle tissue and energy substrate utilization changes with fasting between low and high temperatures. The divergent response of the swimming performance to fasting in qingbo at different temperatures might be an adaptive strategy to seasonal temperature and food resource variation in their habitat.  相似文献
