In laboratory studies, individuals ofEuseius stipulatus Athias-Henriot,Typhlodromus rickeri Chant,T. porresi McMurtry andT. annectens DeLeon offered broad mite,Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), as prey had developmental and ovipositional rates comparable to those offered a known favorable food (tetranychid mites or pollen).Euseius hibisci (Chant) had a longer developmental period and a markedly lower oviposition rate onP. latus than on the control food. Immature survival and ovipositional rates ofEuseius concordis Chant,Typhlodromus occidentalis Nesbitt,Amblyseius limonicus Garman and McGregor andIphiseius degenerans (Berlese) were very low onP. latus compared to control foods.

The effect of different prey mite species on development of the immature stages and on survival and oviposition of adult predator femalePhytoseiulus longipes Evans was studied.P. longipes completed its development onTetranychus pacificus McGregor,Oligonychus punicae (Hirst), andPanonychus citri (McGregor), but not onPetrobia harti (Ewing). Females oviposited while feeding onT. pacificus andO. punicae, but not onP. citri orP. harti. The highest percent survival was observed onT. pacificus, followed byO. punicae andP. citri. The longevity ofP. longipes onP. harti (vial arenas) and on pollen (leaf arenas) was the same as that on leaves with no food. The provision of 10% sucrose solution and clover honey doubled the longevity ofP. longipes females compared with no food.

We evaluated the influence of temperature on demographic parameters of two common vineyard pests, the Pacific spider mite, Tetranychus pacificus McGregor, and the Willamette spider mite, Eotetranychus willamettei (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae). Additionally, we investigated the effects of temperature on their shared predator, the western predatory mite, Galendromus occidentalis (Nesbitt) (Acari: Phytoseiidae). The intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) was higher for T. pacificus than E. willamettei at 15 and 28??C, but similar at 22??C. G. occidentalis achieved a higher r m than T. pacificus from 15 to 28??C, but the difference was significant only at 22??C. At 34??C, the r m for both T. pacificus and G. occidentalis was negative, while E. willamettei did not develop at this temperature. Prey species did not affect demographic parameters of G. occidentalis. These results suggest that higher temperatures favor T. pacificus over the less damaging E. willamettei, and may also reduce the effectiveness of G. occidentalis.

The western predatory mite, Galendromus occidentalis (Nesbitt) (Acari: Phytoseiidae), is a predator of Pacific spider mite, Tetranychus pacificus McGregor (Acari: Tetranychidae), in California vineyards. We evaluated the effects of six pesticides on biological control of T. pacificus on grape plant microcosms in a two-way design: presence and absence of G. occidentalis crossed with presence and absence of pesticide. The insecticide imidacloprid did not affect T. pacificus population growth rate, but it led G. occidentalis populations close to extinction. As a result, T. pacificus populations grew significantly higher in microcosms with release of G. occidentalis and treated with imidacloprid than with G. occidentalis alone. The fungicide wettable sulfur significantly decreased T. pacificus population growth rate but it did not affect G. occidentalis. Consequently, T. pacificus populations were significantly lower in microcosms with release of G. occidentalis and treated with wettable sulfur than with G. occidentalis alone. The insecticide buprofezin had no effect on T. pacificus population growth rate. Although buprofezin did not impact the ability of G. occidentalis to suppress T. pacificus, it negatively affected G. occidentalis population growth rate. The fungicides trifloxystrobin and tebuconazole and the insecticide methoxyfenozide had no influence on T. pacificus or G. occidentalis population growth rates. Furthermore, none of the pesticides affected the sex ratio of G. occidentalis, but buprofezin, methoxyfenozide and trifloxystrobin affected its stage structure. Our study demonstrates that simultaneous testing of the demographic effects of pesticides on pests and natural enemies is essential for a full assessment of pesticide impacts on biological control.

To determine the effect of predator releases in suppressing populations ofOligonychus punicae (Hirst), 9 species ofPhytoseiidae were released in single-tree replicated plots in an avocado orchard at rates of 1200 mites/tree over a 4-week period. The releases did not significantly affect average densities ofO. punicae or total phytoseiids. However, the percentages of the released species in the total phytoseiid populations reached 40, 38, 29, 28, and 22 forPhytoseiulus macropilis (Banks),Amblyseius limonicus (Garman & McGregor),Iphiseius degenerans (Berlese),Amblyseius californicus (McGregor), andTyphlodromus occidentalis Nesbitt, respectively.Phytoseiulus longipes Evans,Euseius concordis (Chant),E. stipulatus (A.-H.), andE. tutsi (Pritchard & Baker) increased little following the releases.

Neighboring almond and cotton fields were sampled for spider mites in four locations in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The dominant species in the almonds wasTetranychus pacificus McGregor. In three cotton sites.T. pacificus was present in significantly higher densities near the almonds on at least one sampling date. In contrast.T. urticae Koch andT. turkestani Ugarov & Nikolski were equally abundant across the cotton fields. Almonds appeared to act as a continuous early-season source ofT. pacificus for cotton, with peaks in aerial dispersal from almonds occurring due to overcrowding, plant water stress, and applications of repellent acaricides. Cotton, which experienced little water stress, supported very high densities of spider mites and so acted primarily as a sink for spider-mite dispersal from almonds and other field crops throughout the growth-season. The frequencies of resistance expressed byT. pacificus andT. urticae were similar between neighboring crops, even if the acaricide had been registered for use only in almonds (cyhexatin) or cotton (dicofol). Thus, longterm acaricide selection and movement of spider mites between the two crops resulted in similar proportions of resistant individuals. In these study sites, large-scale dispersal ofT. pacificus from almonds rarely directly affected acaricide efficacy in cotton, because resistance frequencies were similar for spider mites from the two crops and because acaricide applications were usually made in cotton after dispersal from almonds was completed. In two cotton sites, field selection with dicofol was reversed by subsequent immigration of spider mites from neighboring field crops.

The present study reports life-table parameters and compares the longevity, fecundity, egg-to-adult development times and the length of the reproductive periods for five phytoseiid species (Typhlodromus annectens, Amblyseius californicus, A. idaeus, Euseius concordis, andPhytoseiulus macropilis) when reared onMononychellus progresivus orTetranychus urticae. Recommendations regarding the use of these species for classical biological control ofM. tanajoa in Africa are made.

DNA sequence data were used to examine phylogenetic relationships between six species of economically important Tetranychidae mites:Eotetranychus carpini (Oudemans),E. pruni (Reck),Tetranychus pacificus McGregor,T. mcdanieli McGregor,T. turkestani Ugarov & Nikolski andT. urticae Koch. With primers directed toward conserved elements flanking the target region, the Polymerase Chain Reaction was used to amplify the ITS2 spacer of the ribosomal DNA molecule. The nucleotide sequence of a 300-bp fragment of the ITS2 was determined by direct sequencing and nucleotide divergence used for intra-generic comparison in mites. The resulting phylogenetic tree expressing interspecific relationships in genusTetranychus agrees with morphological data. The study demonstrates the usefulness of the approach in the assessment of the systematics and evolution of the group.

The influence of feeding and temperature on life table parameters ofEuseius stipulatus (Athias-Henriot) andTyphlodromus phialatus Athias-Henriot was determined in laboratory tests. Both phytoseiids developed and reproduced readily when fed onCarpobrotus edulis (L.) pollen andPanonychus citri (McGregor) Intrinsic rates of increase (r m ) at 25°C forE. stipulatus andT. phialatus were 0.197 and 0.126, and, when fed onP. citri, 0.129 and 0.144, respectively.Tetranychus urticae Koch offered as prey allowed normal development and oviposition ofT. phialatus, but no eggs were laid byE. stipulatus when fed on this spider mite. Eggs and honeydew ofAleurothrixus floccosus Mask. furnished sufficient nutrition for development of immatures ofE. stipulatus. Larvae ofPlanoccocus citri Risso, and honeydew and eggs ofA. floccosus, allowed adult survival but no egg-laying of the predaceous mites.Lorryia formosa Cooreman was not a favoured prey species.Life tables were calculated forE. stipulatus fed on pollen andT. phialatus fed onP. citri at constant temperatures of 18, 25, and 32°C. Maximum development was reached at 32°C, withr m values of 0.225 forE. stipulatus and 0.179 forT. phialatus. In general, both phytoseiids showed medium to high total number of eggs per female and long oviposition periods when compared with other phytoseiid species. When mating took place at 32°C,E. stipulatus females were not able to lay eggs, thus suggesting an interference of high temperatures with fertilization in this species. No hatching was observed in eggs of either species when kept at relative humidities of 50% or lower. The possible significance of these responses is discussed in relation to population trends observed in the field.

Differences in responsiveness to potential prey and pollen were tested in the facultative predator,Euseius tularensis Congdon. Following isolation without food for 16 h, adult female mites were observed with one of the following potential foods: pollen ofMalephora crocea (Jacquin) Schwantes,Scirtothrips citri (Moulton) 2nd instar larvae,Tetranychus pacificus McGregor nymphs and ♂,Panonychus citri (McGregor) nymphs and ♂,E. hibisci (Chant) larvae, andE. tularensis larvae. Responses were compared using the proportion of encounters that resulted in consumption. This proportion was highest when pollen was encountered, followed byS. citri andT. pacificus. Consumption was much lower in response toP. citri and congeneric larvae. WhenS. citri larvae were encountered a 2nd time, 1 to 2 h after the initial capture and consumption, responsiveness increased to a level equal to the response observed with pollen. These results suggest thatE. tularensis is a more effective biological control agent of citrus thrips (S. citri) than of citrus red mite (P. citri).

Metaseiulus occidentalis females from the carbaryl-organophosphate-sulfur resistant strain (COS) lived longer (25.3 days versus 19.7 days), had a higher total fecundity (43.8 eggs female–1 versus 33.6 eggs female–1) and a higher daily fecundity rate (2.4 eggs female–1 day–1 versus 2.0 eggs female–1 day–1), and exhibited a higher intrinsic rate of increase (0.243 individuals female–1 day–1 versus 0.182 individuals female–1 day–1) and shorter generation time (13.9 days versus 17.0 days), at 24–28°C, 47–56%rh under continuous fluorescent light, when reared on a diet of 0–48-h-old eggs rather than a diet of mixed actives ofTetranychus pacificus McGregor on bean leaf disks. The sexratio of the progeny was female-biased for both diets, 2.1 females to 1 male forM. occidentalis reared on eggs and 2.0:1 : forM. occidentalis reared on mixed actives, suggesting that diet influences sex-ratio in some unknown way. There was no significant difference in oviposition rates for repeatedly-mated and once-matedM. occidentalis females reared on a diet of younger (0–24-h old) eggs compared to a diet of older (72–96-h old) eggs ofT. pacificus. The COS strain ofM. occidentalis exhibited life-table parameters comparable to the other strains reported in the literature, suggesting that the reproductive attributes of this acarine predator were not reduced as a result of artificial laboratory selection. Diet, a biotic factor, produced substantial differences in life-table parameters, suggesting that this factor can influence conclusions regarding the potential efficacy of biological control agents.

Eight phytoseiid species were tested to evaluate and compare their potential as predators ofTetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard andT. urticae (Koch). The study was conducted using arenas of excised nightshade (Solanum douglasii Dunal) and Lima bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) leaves infested with eitherTetranychus species. When the prey wasT. evansi, the predatorsAmblyseius californicus (McGregor) andPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot from Ventura, California, showed the highest oviposition rates. However, those rates were 4 to 6 times lower than rates for the same predators feeding onT. urticae. OnlyA. californicus and the strain ofP. persimilis from Beni-Mellal, Morocco, had survivorship higher than 50% 8 days after the beginning of the experiment. The results indicated thatT. evansi is an unfavorable prey for all the phytoseiids tested.

The fungicides captan (Captan 112 g a.i./100 L), mancozeb (Manzate 75% DF and 80% WP 180 g a.i./100 L) and flusilazole (Nustar 20F, 0.7, 1.4 and 1.8 g a.i./100 L) did not affect populations of the phytophagous mite,Tetranychus (Polynychus)? canadensis (McGregor). Populations of phytoseiidsAmblyseius fallacis (Garman),A. (Euseius) findlandicus (Oudemans),Typhlodromus caudiglans Schuster, andTy. pyri Scheuten, were significantly reduced by both rates of mancozeb. Flusilazole (0.7 g a.i./100 L) and captan also reduced numbers of the phytoseiids. All fungicides tested adversely affected populations of the stigmaeid,Zetzellia mali (Ewing).

The chromosomes of 13 species of spider mites (Tetranychidae) are determined using the aceto-orcein squash technique in order to establish the haplo-diploid sex-determination. 12 species showed the existence of haploid and diploid eggs:Neotetranychus rubi (Trägårdh) with 7 and 14 chromosomes;Eurytetranychus buxi (Garman) with 5 and 10;Bryobia sarothamni (Geijskes),Eotetranychus tiliarium (Joh. Hermann) andE. carpini (Oudemans) with 4 and 8;Panonychus ulmi (Koch),Schizotetranychus schizopus (Zacher),Oligonychus ununguis (Jacobi).Tetranychus hydrangeae Pritch. & Baker, T.pacificus McGregor,T. urticae Koch andT. cinnabarinus (Boisduval) with 3 and 6 chromosomes. The progeny of virgin females in 7 different species consisted of eggs with the haploid complement. One species was shown to be thelytokous, viz.Tetranycopsis horridus (Canestrini & Franzago), having a diploid number of 4 chromosomes. Some eggs of an inbred line ofT. urticae showed a patchwork quilt of odd polyploidy in embryonic tissue.

The predacious miteTyphlodromus pelargonicus El-Badry preyed on the different developmental stages of the two spotted spider miteTetranychus urticae Koch. The development was quickest and the number of prey consumed was highest when individuals were maintained on eggs compared with nymphs or adult female stages. The predator was able to develop and reproduce on the eriophyid miteEriophyes dioscoridis. Soliman & Abou-Awad, nymphs of the tobacco whiteflyBemisia tabaci (Genn.) and pollen grains ofPhoenix dactylifera andRicinus communis. The average number of eggs/♀/day was 1.4, 0.7, 1.2 and 0.9 on eriophyid, whitefly,Ph. dactylifera andR. communis respectively.

Observations were made on the feeding behavior of the two main phytoseiid species in Spanish Citrus orchards,Euseius stipulatus (Athias-Henriot) andTyphlodromus phialatus Athias-henriot. The experiences were carried out by rearing the predatory mites on excised orange leaves, and always with an excess of the prey the Citrus Red Mite (=CRM)Panonychus citri (McGregor). In experiments with all stages of CRM, the number of prey killed per hour was 5.12 and 2.00, the percentage of successful attacks, 58% and 21%, and the mean time spent feeding on each prey was 5.1 and 12.2 minutes for starving females ofE. stipulatus andT. phialatus respectively.E. stipulatus feeds on all stages of the prey except eggs, andT. philatus, on all stages, except males. Both species attack much less successfully females ofP. citri rather than immatures. In experiments with adult females and eggs ofP. citri as prey, the mean number of prey killed daily was 4.51 females forE. stipulatus, and 2.01 females and 2.12 eggs forT. philatus. Considering this killing rate and the number of eggs laid by the predators in the same period, it can be concluded thatE. stipulatus consumes only 30% of the content of the preys killed, whereasT. philatus consumes a percentage of prey variable between individuals and ranging from 40% to 100%. These differences in feeding behavior between the two species could partly explain differences in their efficiency as biocontrol agents ofP. citri observed in the field.

The linkage relationship of four different mutations in Tetranychus pacificus McGregor was studied. No linkage could be detected between the mutations p (pigmentless), we (white eye) and st (stork). The factor OP (phosphate resistance) showed linkage with st, but not with p and we. The occurrence of crossover in females has been proved in this species.

Seven species of phytoseiid mites were collected from citrus trees in the Mediterranean region during a survey in 1971.Amblyseius stipulatus Athias-Henriot was the most abundant and widespread species in all countries surveyed (Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain).A. californicus (McGregor) was collected only in Spain;A. potentillae (Garman) andPhytoseiulus persimilis. A.-H. only in Italy.Typhlodromus talbii A.-H. was collected in Greece and Spain,T. athiasae Porath & Swirski in Greece and Turkey, andIphiseius degenerans (Berl.) in Greece and Italy. Living material of all species exceptT. talbii was successfully shipped to California and insectary cultures established. Biologies were studied in the laboratory under 2 food regimes:Tetranychus pacificus McGregor eggs and larvae, and pollen ofMalephora crocea (Jacq.). Pollen was not a satisfactory food forp. persimilis, A. californicus andT. athiasae. Pollen was slightly less satisfactory than tetranychid mites fora. potentillae, but was equally or more favorable than mites forA. stipulatus andI. degenerans. A. stipulatus has become established in southern California.

Dispersal and gene flow of pesticide resistance traits in phytoseiid and tetranychid mites are discussed relative to their biologies and resistance management. The focus is on deciduous fruit-tree crops whereTyphlodromus pyri Scheuten andMetaseiulus occidentalis (Nesbitt) can effectively control spider mite pests. Oregon populations ofM. occidentalis were more dispersive thanT. pyri, as evidenced by movement to small apple trees placed inside and outside of commercial apple orchards. This difference was corroborated by the spatial distributions of organophosphate resistance in populations from sprayed orchards and nearby unsprayed habitats:T. pyri showed patchy, local patterns of resistance whileM. occidentalis showed more regional, homogeneous trends. Gene flow among populations was estimated from allozymic variation ofT. pyri. Intra- and inter-population genetic variation was high enough to prevent population differentiation. Thus, allozymic estimates of gene flow were higher than that indicated by pesticide resistance patterns.Dispersal inTetranychus urticae Koch is also discussed relative to resistance evolution. Immigration of resistant phenotypes from crops or other sprayed habitats can increase the frequency of resistance. Immigration of susceptible individuals from surrounding unsprayed habitat into a sprayed crop can slow resistance or lead to its reversion, depending on the level of gene flow between populations. Dispersal within crops can have the same effect if susceptibles come from a refuge. In pears, immigration of susceptibleT. urticae from nearby habitat and groundcover aided in reversion of organotin resistance. Experiments on resistance management tactics forT. urticae are discussed.

Sulfur is the oldest and most widely used fungicide in the vineyards of California, where it is used for control of powdery mildew (Uncinula necator [Schw.] Burr). For decades, sulfur use has been associated with outbreaks of Tetranychus pacificus McGregor (Acari: Tetranychidae) on cultivated grapes in the San Joaquin Valley. I undertook large-scale field studies to test this association, to evaluate the impact of sulfur on Galendromus occidentalis (Nesbit) (Acari: Phytoseiidae), a major predator of T. pacificus, and to determine if timing of sulfur applications with respect to grape bloom has an impact on T. pacificus density. The studies took place in a 32 ha vineyard in Fresno County, and all fungicide applications were made with commercial-scale equipment. In 1998 a ‘high sulfur’ treatment, a combination of wettable sulfur and sulfur dust, was compared to ‘low sulfur,’ in which demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicides partially substituted for sulfur. In 1999 treatments were ‘sulfur,’ ‘DMI,’ ‘sulfur pre-bloom’ (here sulfur was applied prior to grape bloom, in late May, and then DMIs were applied until mid-season) and ‘sulfur post-bloom’ (the reverse of ‘sulfur pre-bloom’). In each year, the T. pacificus population increase came after the end of fungicide applications, and results clearly show a relationship between sulfur use and T. pacificus density. In 1998, mean T. pacificus density was 2.7 times higher and mean G. occidentalis density 2.5 times higher in ‘high sulfur’ compared to ‘low sulfur.’ In 1999, the highest T. pacificus counts were in the ‘sulfur’ and ‘sulfur pre-bloom’ treatments, 4.8 times higher than ‘sulfur post-bloom’ and 2 times higher than ‘DMIs.’ Density of G. occidentalis was 2.3 times as high in ‘sulfur’ or ‘sulfur pre-bloom’ than ‘DMIs.’ The predator/prey ratio was not significantly different among treatments in 1998, but in 1999 it was highest in the ‘sulfur pre-bloom’ treatment. In 1999, density of Homeopronematus anconai (Baker) (Acari: Tydeidae) was 2.7 times higher in ‘sulfur pre-bloom’ compared to ‘sulfur,’ and higher by 2.7 times in ‘DMI’ compared to ‘sulfur post-bloom,’ suggesting a negative effect of sulfur on this tydeid. These results do not support the hypotheses that the cause of the increase in T. pacificus density is due to negative effects of sulfur on phytoseiids or tydeids. Rather, it appears that a plant-based explanation is likely, first, because of the differences in pre-bloom versus post-bloom sulfuring, and second, because of the long lag time between the end of the sulfur applications and the corresponding increase in spider mite density.
