We compared on eight dates during the ice-free period physicochemical properties and rates of phytoplankton and epipelic primary production in six arctic lakes dominated by soft bottom substrate. Lakes were classified as shallow ( < 2.5 m), intermediate in depth (2.5 m <  < 4.5 m), and deep ( > 4.5 m), with each depth category represented by two lakes. Although shallow lakes circulated freely and intermediate and deep lakes stratified thermally for the entire summer, dissolved oxygen concentrations were always >70% of saturation values. Soluble reactive phosphorus and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN = NO3 –N + NH4 +–N) were consistently below the detection limit (0.05 μmol l−1) in five lakes. However, one lake shallow lake (GTH 99) periodically showed elevated values of DIN (17 μmol l−1), total-P (0.29 μmol l−1), and total-N (33 μmol l−1), suggesting wind-generated sediment resuspension. Due to increased nutrient availability or entrainment of microphytobenthos, GTH 99 showed the highest average volume-based values of phytoplankton chlorophyll a (chl a) and primary production, which for the six lakes ranged from 1.0 to 2.9 μg l−1 and 0.7–3.8 μmol C l−1 day−1. Overall, however, increased resulted in increased area-based values of phytoplankton chl a and primary production, with mean values for the three lake classes ranging from 3.6 to 6.1 mg chl a m−2 and 3.2–5.8 mmol C m−2 day−1. Average values of epipelic chl a ranged from 131 to 549 mg m−2 for the three depth classes, but levels were not significantly different due to high spatial variability. However, average epipelic primary production was significantly higher in shallow lakes (12.2 mmol C m−2 day−1) than in intermediate and deep lakes (3.4 and 2.4 mmol C m−2 day−1). Total primary production (6.7–15.4 mmol C m−2 day−1) and percent contribution of the epipelon (31–66%) were inversely related to mean depth, such that values for both variables were significantly higher in shallow lakes than in intermediate or deep lakes. To understand the characteristics of the ecosystem in Japanese lowland marsh, we investigated chlorophyll-a (Chl. a), photosynthesis and respiration of a phytoplankton community in a brownish-colored pond in Naka-ikemi marsh, Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture. Chl. a concentrations and volumetric gross primary production rates ranged between 1.3–57.0 μg Chl. a l−1 and 148–1619 μg C l−1 day−1 during the study period. Higher values of Chl. a and primary production rates were clearly observed from June to September, when the dominant algae were the phytoflagellates, Peridinium (Dinophyceae) and Cryptomonas (Cryptophyceae), with swimming ability. The trophic status of the pond water of Naka-ikemi marsh was defined as being in eutrophic condition based on the biomass and productivity of phytoplankton. However, depths of Z 1% showing the productive layer in this study site were relatively narrower than those observed in the hyper-eutrophic Lake Suwa with frequent cyanobacterial water bloom. Factor-attenuating underwater light intensity in Naka-ikemi marsh was presumed to be colored dissolved organic matter. Thus, not only phytoplankton primary production, but also allochthonous organic matter supplied from the catchment area seems to be the dominant factor in the whole energy budget of the pond. In conclusion, we regarded the pond ecosystem in Naka-ikemi marsh to be in a eutrophic–dystrophic condition.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to describe the biogeochemical characteristics in the waters of Mongolian lakes, particularly those related to parameters limiting phytoplankton growth and the trophic state. Investigations into the distribution of chemical and biological parameters were carried out in the following 18 lakes: Har Us, Har, Hovsgol, Achit, Dalai, Bayan, Tolbo, Holboo, Bust, Sangiyn Dalai, Tunamal, Dorgon, Uureg, Telmen, Hyargas, Uvs, Erkhel and Oygon, all of which showed a wide range of salinity between 0.16 and 24.9 g l−1. Lake water was classified into four types: six fresh (less than 0.5 g l−1 salinity), three subsaline (0.5–3 g l−1), seven hyposaline (3–20 g l−1) and two mesosaline (20–50 g l−1) lakes. Predominant cations and anions in the order of dominance were Ca, Mg > Na > K and HCO3 > SO4, Cl in freshwater lakes, Na > Mg > Ca, K and HCO3, Cl > SO4 in subsaline lakes, and Na > Mg > K, Ca and Cl, SO4 > HCO3 in hyposaline and mesosaline lakes. Nitrogenous and phosphorus nutrients in the waters were low, seemingly caused by the low loads from their watersheds, where the ground was free of vegetation with an extremely low level of human activity. The present investigations revealed some 234 taxa of phytoplankton and 38 of zooplankton. The PC:PN:PP stoichiometric ratio by weight was (22–202):(3–27):1. Phosphorus was assessed as the potential limiting parameter in eight lakes, nitrogen in six and both nutrients in four others. Twelve lakes showed an oligotrophic character, while six were mesotrophic type. The six oligotrophic lakes seemed to be subject to phosphorus limiting phytoplankton growth, four to nitrogen and two to both limitations. In the mesotrophic lakes, on the other hand, phosphorus limitation was verified in two lakes, nitrogen in two others and both in two lakes.  相似文献

Periphyton (epilithon) gross primary production (GPP) was estimated using the DCMU-fluorescence method in the Yenisei River. In the unshaded littoral zone, chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) and GPP value varied from 0.83 to 973.74 mg m−2and 2–304,425 O2 m−2 day−1 (0.64–95 133 mg C m−2 day−1), respectively. Positive significant correlation (r = 0.8) between daily GPP and periphyton Chl a was found. Average ratio GPP:Chl a for periphyton was 36.36 mg C mg Chl a m−2 day−1. The obtained GPP values for the Yenisei River have a high significant correlation with values predicted by a conventional empirical model for stream periphyton. We concluded that the DCMU-fluorescence method can be successfully used for measuring of gross primary production of stream phytoperiphyton at least as another useful tool for such studies.  相似文献

In order to provide a better understanding of the dynamics of phytoplankton in the coastal regions of high latitudes, a study was carried out to estimate the dynamics of carbon biomass of autotrophic and heterotrophic algal groups over the austral spring-summer 1997/1998 period. At a fixed station located in the central basin (Paso Ancho) of the Straits of Magellan (53°S), surface water samples were collected at least once a week from September 1997 (early spring) to March 1998 (late summer). Quantitative analysis of biomass of phytoplankton was estimated from geometric volumes, using non-linear equations, and converted to biomass. The pattern of chlorophyll a showed a strong temporal variability, with maximum values (mean 2.8 mg m−3) at the austral spring phytoplankton increase or bloom (October/November) and minimum values during early spring (September: <0.5 mg m−3) and summer (January/March: 0.5–1.0 mg m−3). During the spring bloom, diatoms made up to 90% of the total phytoplankton carbon (0.01–189 μg l−1), followed by a maximum of thecate dinoflagellates (0.08–34 μg l−1), and sporadic high biomass of phytoflagellates during summer. Heterotrophic algal groups such as Gymnodinium and Gyrodinium spp. dominated (70%, in the 5- to 25-μm size range) shortly before the main diatom bloom, and small peaks were observed within spring and early summer periods (0–0.4 μg l−1). Phytoflagellates dominated earlier (spring) with higher carbon biomass (8 μg l−1) and post-bloom periods (summer) when carbon biomass ranged between 1 and 4 μg l−1. In January 2004 the microplankton community from the coastal waters of Terre Adélie and Georges V Land (139°E–145°E) was studied. Results showed a diatom-dominated bloom with chlorophyll a levels averaging 0.64 μg l−1 at 5 m depth (range 0.21–1.57 μg l−1). Three geographic assemblages of diatoms were identified, based on principal diatom taxa abundances. The stratified waters near the Mertz Glacier presented highest phytoplankton biomasses (0.28–1.57 μg Chl a l−1 at 5 m) and diatom abundances (6,507–70,274 cells l−1 at 5 m), but low diversity, dominated by Fragilariopsis spp. Lower biomasses (0.38–0.94 μg Chl a l−1 at 5 m) and abundances (394–9,058 cells l−1 at 5 m) were observed in the mixed waters around the Astrolabe Glacier with a diverse diatom community characterised by larger species Corethron pennatum and Rhizosolenia spp. Finally an intermediate zone between them over the shallower shelf waters of the Adélie Bank represented by Chaetoceros criophilus, where biomasses (0.21–0.35 μg Chl a l−1 at 5 m) and abundances (1,190–5,431 cells l−1 at 5 m) were lowest, coinciding with the presence of abundant herbivorous zooplankton.  相似文献

We have studied the seasonal dynamics of abundance and feeding characteristics of three species of calanoid copepods (Acartia spp., Centropages hamatus and Temora longicornis) in the White Sea from the surface water layer (0–10 m), in order to assess their role in the pelagic food web and to determine the major factors governing their population dynamics during the productive season. These species dominated in the upper water layer (0–10 m) from June through September, producing up to 3 generations per year. Data on the food spectra revealed all species to be omnivorous; but some inter- and intraspecific differences were observed. Generally, copepods consumed diatoms, dinoflagellates and microzooplankton. The omnivory index ‘UC’ (i.e., fatty acid unsaturation coefficient) varied from 0.2 to 0.6, which implied ingestion of phytoplankton. The different degree of selectivity on the same food items by the studied species was observed, and therefore, successful surviving strategy with minimal overlapping could be assumed. In total, the populations of the three studied copepod species grazed up to 2.15 g C m−2 day−1 and released up to 0.68 g C m−2 day−1 in faecal pellets. They consumed up to 50% of particulate organic carbon, or up to 85% of phytoplankton standing stock (in terms of Chl. a), and thus played a significant role in the transformation of particulate organic matter. Seasonal changes in abundance of the studied species depended mostly on water temperature in the early summer, but were also affected by food availability (Chl. a concentration) during the productive season.  相似文献

Numerous studies have demonstrated alternative regimes in shallow lake ecosystems around the world, with one state dominated by submerged macrophytes and the other by phytoplankton. However, the stability of each regime, and thresholds at which lakes shift to the alternative regime, are poorly known. We used a cross-sectional analysis of 72 shallow lakes located in prairie and parkland areas of Minnesota, USA, during 2005 and 2006 to assess the occurrence of alternative regimes and shifts between them. Cluster analysis revealed two distinct groups of lakes characterized not only by different macrophyte abundance and chlorophyll a levels but also by different total phosphorus–chlorophyll a relationships. Thirty-nine lakes were macrophyte- and 23 lakes phytoplankton-dominated in both years, whereas 10 sites shifted sharply between those regimes. We failed to detect a universal shifting threshold in terms of chlorophyll a or total phosphorus. However, 95% of the lakes with chlorophyll a concentrations less than 22 μg l−1 were in a clear-water regime, whereas 95% of the lakes with chlorophyll a higher than 31 μg l−1 were in a turbid regime. Total phosphorus less than 62 μg l−1 was an accurate predictor of lakes in a stable clear-water regime, whereas a large change in biomass of planktivores and benthivores between years was the only variable weakly related to regime shifts. Our results support the theoretical prediction that regime thresholds vary among lakes. We recommend that lake managers focus on improving resilience of clear regimes in shallow lakes by reducing nutrient loading, rather than attempting to identify and manage complex triggers of regime shifts. Author contributions KDZ, MAH, BRH, and MLK all contributed to the design of the study, performed the research, analyzed data, and helped write the article.  相似文献

The abundance and composition of phytoplankton were investigated at six stations along a transect from the Barguzin River inflow to the central basin of Lake Baikal in August 2002 to clarify the effect of the river inflow on the phytoplankton community in the lake. The water temperature in the epilimnion was high near the shore at Station 1 (17.3°C), probably due to the higher temperature of the river water, and gradually decreased offshore at Station 6 (14.5°C). Thermal stratification developed at Stations 2–6, and a thermocline was observed at a 17–22-m depth at Stations 2–4 and an 8–12-m depth at Stations 5 and 6. The concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients in the epilimnion at all stations were <1.0 μmol N l−1 and <0.16 μmol P l−1, respectively. Relatively high concentrations of nutrients (0.56–7.38 μmol N l−1 and 0.03–0.28 μmol P l−1) were detected in the deeper parts of the euphotic zone. Silicate was not exhausted at all stations (>20 μmol Si l−1). The chlorophyll a (chl. a) concentration was high (>10 μg l−1) near the shore at Station 1 and low (<3 μg l−1) at five other stations. The <2 μm fraction of chl. a in Stations 2–6 ranged between 0.80 and 1.85 μg l−1, and its contribution to total chl. a was high (>60%). In this fraction, picocyanobacteria were abundant at all stations and ranged between 5 × 104 and 5 × 105 cells ml−1. In contrast, chl. a in the >2 μm fraction varied significantly (0.14–11.17 μg l−1), and the highest value was observed at Station 1. In this fraction, the dominant phytoplankton was Aulacoseira and centric diatoms at Station 1 and Cryptomonas, Ankistrodesmus, Asterionella, and Nitzschia at Stations 2–6. The present study demonstrated the dominance of picophytoplankton in the pelagic zone, while higher abundance of phytoplankton dominated by diatoms was observed in the shallower littoral zone. These larger phytoplankters in the littoral zone probably depend on nutrients from the Barguzin River.  相似文献

We investigated the photosynthesis–light intensity (P–I) relationships of phytoplankton collected from a sublittoral sand bank in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, under different temperature conditions. In spite of low chlorophyll a concentration (<3 mg m−3), phytoplankton had considerably high photosynthetic potential (>10 mg C (mg chl a)−1 h−1) in the study area. Based on the P–I relationships, we conducted numerical simulation of areal primary production using published data on water temperature, chlorophyll a concentration, and irradiance. The areal primary production ranged between 159 and 187 g C m−2 year−1. This production was within the range of typical values reported previously in deeper areas of the Seto Inland Sea. The productivity in the sand bank area was discussed in relation to water current, allochthonous resource input, and fisheries.  相似文献

During the late austral summer and early autumn 1995 (March–April), an oceanographic cruise was conducted along the Strait of Magellan in order to study the photosynthetic performance of phytoplankton assemblages. The high correlations between the pico–nano fractions and both the total biomass concentrations (Chla) and primary production rates emphasized the role of these fractions in driving the primary production processes. Repeated P versus E experiments were conducted in the most productive area of the Strait, Paso Ancho, in order to assess the influence of the tidal currents on phytoplankton photosynthetic performance. These data were compared to those available from a previous cruise (February–March, 1991) carried out along the Strait. In the Pacific–Andean sector, the primary production processes were highly controlled by wind, land forcing, and irradiance availability. In the Paso Ancho, the observed highest photosynthetic capacity P\textm\textB P_{\text{m}}^{\text{B}} (up to 6.5 mgC mgChla −1 h−1) and the high primary production rates may due to the continuous mixing of the water column forced by the strong tidal currents within the photic layer. The non-limiting, macro-nutrient concentrations in the Strait indicate that the available irradiance and the depth of mixed layer are the main driving factors of the primary production processes. The photosynthetic performance of the phytoplankton assemblages renders the Strait a unique ecosystem, which is more similar to those of the mid-latitudes than to those of the periantarctic areas.  相似文献

Production rates, abundance, chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations and pigment composition were measured for three size classes (<2 μm, 2–11 μm and >11 μm) of phytoplankton from May to December 2000 in deep, mesotrophic, alpine lake Mondsee in Austria. The study focuses on differences among phytoplankton size fractions characterised by their surface area to volume ratio ([mml−1: mm3l−1]), pigment distribution patterns and photosynthetic rates. Particular attention was paid to autotrophic picophytoplankton (APP, fraction <2 μm) since this size fraction differed significantly from the two larger size fractions. Among the three fractions, APP showed the highest surface area to volume ratios and a high persistence in the pattern of lipophilic pigments between temporarily and spatially successive samples (about 80% similarity of pigment composition between samples over seasons and depths). The epilimnetic abundance of APP varied seasonally with an annual maximum of 180 × 10cells ml−1 in June (at 4–9 m). The minimum (October at 12 m) was more than an order of magnitude lower (4.9 × 103 ml−1). APP peaked during autumn and contributed between 24% and 42% to the total area-integrated Chl a (10–23 mg m−2) and between 16% and 58% to total area-integrated production (5–64 mg m−2  h−1) throughout seasons.  相似文献

An investigation into the changing phytoplankton biomass and total water column production during autumn sea ice formation in the eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica showed reduced biomass concentrations and extremely low daily primary production. Mean chlorophyll-a concentration for the entire study period was extremely low, 0.15±0.01 mg.m−3 with a maximum of 0.35 mg.m−3 found along the first transect to the east of the grid. Areas of low biomass were identified as those either associated with heavy grazing or with deep mixing and corresponding low light levels. In most cases phytoplankton in the <20-μm size classes dominated. Integrated biomass to 100 m ranged from 7.1 to 28.0 mg.m−2 and correlated positively with surface chlorophyll-a concentrations. Mean PBmax (photosynthetic capacity) and αB (initial slope of the photosynthesis-irradiance curve) were 1.25±0.19 mgC. mgChla −1.h−1 and 0.042±0.009 mgC.mgChla −1.h−1.(μmol.m−2.s−1)−1 respectively. The mean index of photoadaptation,I k, was 32.2±4.0 μmol.m−2.s−1 and photoinhibition was found in all cases. Primary production was integrated to the critical depth (Z cr) at each production station and ranged from 15.6 to 41.5 mgC.m−2.d−1. It appears that, other than grazing intensity, the relationship between the critical depth and the mixing depth (Z mix) is an important factor as, ultimately, light availability due both to the late season and growing sea ice cover severely limits production during the austral autumn.  相似文献

Eutrophication has become increasingly serious and noxious algal blooms have been of more frequent occurrence in the Yangtze River Estuary and in the adjacent East China Sea. In 2003 and 2004, four cruises were undertaken in three zones in the estuary and in the adjacent sea to investigate nitrate (NO3–N), ammonium (NH4–N), nitrite (NO2–N), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), dissolved reactive silica (DRSi), dissolved oxygen (DO), phytoplankton chlorophyll a (Chl a) and suspended particulate matter (SPM). The highest concentrations of DIN (NO3–N+NH4–N+NO2–N), SRP and DRSi were 131.6, 1.2 and 155.6 μM, respectively. The maximum Chl a concentration was 19.5 mg m−3 in spring. An analysis of historical and recent data revealed that in the last 40 years, nitrate and SRP concentrations increased from 11 to 97 μM and from 0.4 to 0.95 μM, respectively. From 1963 to 2004, N:P ratios also increased from 30–40 up to 150. In parallel with the N and P enrichment, a significant increase of Chl a was detected, Chl a maximum being 20 mg m−3, nearly four times higher than in the 1980s. In 2004, the mean DO concentration in bottom waters was 4.35 mg l−1, much lower than in the 1980s. In comparison with other estuaries, the Yangtze River Estuary was characterized by high DIN and DRSi concentrations, with low SRP concentrations. Despite the higher nutrient concentrations, Chl a concentrations were lower in the inner estuary (Zones 1 and 2) than in the adjacent sea (Zone 3). Based on nutrient availability, SPM and hydrodynamics, we assumed that in Zones 1 and 2 phytoplankton growth was suppressed by high turbidity, large tidal amplitude and short residence time. Furthermore, in Zone 3 water stratification was also an important factor that resulted in a greater phytoplankton biomass and lower DO concentrations. Due to hydrodynamics and turbidity, the open sea was unexpectedly more sensitive to nutrient enrichment and related eutrophication processes.  相似文献

The composition and ecological role of ciliates and dinoflagellates were investigated at one station in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, during six consecutive field campaigns between March and December 2006. Total ciliate and dinoflagellate abundance mirrored the seasonal progression of phytoplankton, peaking with 5.8 × 104 cells l−1 in April at an average chlorophyll a concentration of 10 μg l−1. Dinoflagellates were more abundant than ciliates, dominated by small athecates. Among ciliates, aloricate oligotrichs dominated the assemblage. A large fraction (>60%) of ciliates and dinoflagellates contained chloroplasts in spring and summer. The biomass of the purely heterotrophic fraction of the ciliate and dinoflagellate community (protozooplankton) was with 14 μg C l−1 highest in conjunction with the phytoplankton spring bloom in April. Growth experiments revealed similar specific growth rates for heterotrophic ciliates and dinoflagellates (<0–0.8 d−1). Food availability may have controlled the protozooplankton assemblage in winter, while copepods may have exerted a strong control during the post-bloom period. Calculations of the potential grazing rates of the protozooplankton indicated its ability to control or heavily impact the phytoplankton stocks at most times. The results show that ciliates and dinoflagellates were an important component of the pelagic food web in Kongsfjorden and need to be taken into account when discussing the fate of phytoplankton and biogeochemical cycling in Arctic marine ecosystems.  相似文献

The algal, protozoan and metazoan communities within different drift-ice types (newly formed, pancake and rafted ice) and in under-ice water were studied in the Gulf of Bothnia in March 2006. In ice, diatoms together with unidentified flagellates dominated the algal biomass (226 ± 154 μg ww l−1) and rotifers the metazoan and protozoan biomass (32 ± 25 μg ww l−1). The under-ice water communities were dominated by flagellates and ciliates, which resulted in lower biomasses (97 ± 25 and 21 ± 14 μg ww l−1, respectively). The under-ice water and newly formed ice separated from all other samples to their own cluster in hierarchical cluster analysis. The most important discriminating factors, according to discriminant analysis, were chlorophyll-a, phosphate and silicate. The under-ice water/newly formed ice cluster was characterized by high nutrient and low chlorophyll-a values, while the opposite held true for the ice cluster. Increasing trends in chlorophyll-a concentration and biomass were observed with increasing ice thickness. Within the thick ice columns (>40 cm), the highest chlorophyll-a concentrations (6.6–22.2 μg l−1) were in the bottom layers indicating photoacclimation of the sympagic community. The ice algal biomass showed additional peaks in the centric diatom-dominated surface layers coinciding with the highest photosynthetic efficiencies [0.019–0.032 μg C (μg Chl-a −1 h−1) (μE m−2 s−1)−1] and maximum photosynthetic capacities [0.43-1.29 μg C (μg Chl-a −1 h−1)]. Rafting and snow-ice formation, determined from thin sections and stable oxygen isotopic composition, strongly influenced the physical, chemical and biological properties of the ice. Snow-ice formation provided the surface layers with nutrients and possibly habitable space, which seemed to have favored centric diatoms in our study.  相似文献

Landfast ice algal communities were studied in the strongly riverine-influenced northernmost part of the Baltic Sea, the Bothnian Bay, during the winter-spring transition of 2004. The under-ice river plume, detected by its low salinity and elevated nutrient concentrations, was observed only at the station closest to the river mouth. The bottommost ice layer at this station was formed from the plume water (brine volume 0.71%). This was reflected by the low flagellate-dominated (93%) algal biomass in the bottom layer, which was one-fifth of the diatom-dominated (74%) surface-layer biomass of 88 μg C l−1. Our results indicate that habitable space plays a controlling role for ice algae in the Bothnian Bay fast ice. Similarly to the water column in the Bothnian Bay, average dissolved inorganic N:P-ratios in the ice were high, varying between 12 and 265. The integrated chlorophyll a (0.1–2.2 mg m−2) and algal biomass in the ice (1–31 mg C m−2) correlated significantly (Spearman ρ = 0.79), with the highest values being measured close to the river mouth in March and during the melt season in April. Flagellates <20 μm generally dominated in both the ice and water columns in February–March. In April the main ice-algal biomass was composed of Melosira arctica and unidentified pennate diatoms, while in the water column Achnanthes taeniata, Scrippsiella hangoei and flagellates dominated. The photosynthetic efficiency (0.003–0.013 (μg C [μg chl a −1] h−1)(μE m−2s−1)−1) and maximum capacity (0.18–1.11 μg C [μg chl a −1] h−1) could not always be linked to the algal composition, but in the case of a clear diatom dominance, pennate species showed to be more dark-adapted than centric diatoms.  相似文献

The decrease of biodiversity related to the phenomena of global climate change is stimulating the scientific community towards a better understanding of the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In ecosystems where marked biodiversity changes occur at seasonal time scales, it is easier to relate them with ecosystem functioning. The objective of this work is to analyse the relationship between phytoplankton diversity and primary production in St. André coastal lagoon – SW Portugal. This lagoon is artificially opened to the sea every year in early spring, exhibiting a shift from a marine dominated to a low salinity ecosystem in winter. Data on salinity, temperature, nutrients, phytoplankton species composition, chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration and primary production were analysed over a year. Modelling studies based on production-irradiance curves were also conducted. A total of 19 taxa were identified among diatoms, dinoflagellates and euglenophyceans, the less abundant group. Lowest diversities (Shannon–Wiener index) were observed just before the opening to the sea. Results show a negative correlation (p<0.05) between diversity and chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration (0.2–40.3 mg Chl a m−3). Higher Chl a values corresponded to periods when the community was dominated by the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum (>90% of cell abundance) and production was maximal (up to 234.8 mg C m−3 h−1). Maximal photosynthetic rates (Pmax) (2.0–22.5 mg C mg Chl a−1 h−1) were higher under lower Chl a concentrations. The results of this work suggest that decreases in diversity are associated with increases in biomass and production, whereas increases correspond to opposite trends. It is suggested that these trends, contrary to those observed in terrestrial and in some benthic ecosystems, may be a result of low habitat diversity in the water column and resulting competitive pressure. The occurrence of the highest photosynthetic rates when Chl a is low, under some of the highest diversities, suggests a more efficient use of irradiance under low biomass–high diversity conditions. Results suggest that this increased efficiency is not explained by potential reductions in nutrient limitation and intraspecific competition under lower biomasses and may be a result of niche complementarity.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal variation of microphytobenthic biomass in the nearshore zone of Martel Inlet (King George Island, Antarctica) was estimated at several sites and depths (10–60 m), during three summer periods (1996/1997, 1997/1998, 2004/2005). The mean values were inversely related to the bathymetric gradient: higher ones at 10–20 m depth (136.2 ± 112.5 mg Chl a m−2, 261.7 ± 455.9 mg Phaeo m−2), intermediate at 20–30 m (55.6 ± 39.5 mg Chl a m−2, 108.8 ± 73.0 mg Phaeo m−2) and lower ones at 40–60 m (22.7 ± 23.7 mg Chl a m−2, 58.3 ± 38.9 mg Phaeo m−2). There was also a reduction in the Chl a/Phaeo ratio with depth, from 3.2 ± 3.2 (10–20 m) to 0.7 ± 1.0 (40–60 m), showing a higher contribution of senescent phytoplankton and/or macroalgae debris at the deeper sites and the limited light flux reaching the bottom. Horizontal differences found in the biomass throughout the inlet could not be clearly related to hydrodynamics or proximity to glaciers, but with sediment characteristics. An inter-summer variation was observed: the first summer presented the highest microphytobenthic biomass apparently related to more hydrodynamic conditions, which causes the deposition of allochthonous material.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the microphytoplankton assemblages were examined in the coastal zone of Bozcaada Island with regard to some major physical and chemical variables. Samples were collected from May 2000 to December 2001 at four stations. A total of 108 dinoflagellates, 102 diatoms, 1 chrysophycean, 3 dictyochophycean, and 1 prasinophycean species were identified and quantified during the study period. Diatoms and dinoflagellates were the most important in terms of species number and abundance. The maximum values of total microphytoplankton were observed at 0.5 m depth (46.2 × 103 cells l−1 at st. 3) in May as this was the month when the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia pungens bloomed. Chlorophyll (chl) a concentration ranged between 0.08 (August) and 0.78 μg l−1 (February). May was another important month in which chlorophyll a increased (0.41–0.47 μg l−1). Species diversity values (Hlog2) ranged from 1.66 bits (June, 20 m) to 4.11 bits (November, 0.5 m). The increase was attributed to a more balanced distribution of abundance among species. The amounts of nitrate + nitrite (0.6−3.7 μg-at N l−1), phosphate (0.2−0.6 μg-at P l−1) and silicate (0.7−2.5 μg-at Si l−1) were recorded on each sampling occasion. Nutrient concentrations and chl a values of the research area were found to be poorer than those of the many other coastal areas in the northeastern Mediterranean. The mean atomic ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus varied from 1.3 (June) to 12.9 (February). This ratio was lower than the Redfield ratio of 16 for ocean phytoplankton, and phytoplankton was potentially limited by nitrogen for most of the months. The result of this study confirms and emphasizes the oligotrophic nature of the eastern Mediterranean.  相似文献
