The effects of superoxide dismutase on aging were tested using two differt experimental approaches. In the first, replicated populations with postponed aging were compared with their controls for frequencies of electrophoretic alleles at the SOD locus. Populations with postponed aging had consistently greater frequencies of the allele coding for more active SOD protein. This allele was not part of a segregating inversion polymorphism. The second experimental approach was the extraction ofSOD alleles from different natural populations followed by the construction of differentSOD genotypes on hybrid genetic backgrounds. This procedure did not uncover any statistical effect ofSOD genotype on hybrid genetic backgrounds. This effects on longevity and fecundity due to the family from which a particularSOD genotype was derived. To detect the effects ofSOD genotypes on longevity with high probability would require a ten-fold increase in the number of families used.  相似文献

Quantitative genetic analyses of Drosophila melanogaster stocks with postponed aging have suffered from the problem of a lack of certainty concerning patterns of allelic differentiation. The present experiments were designed to alleviate this difficulty by selecting for enhanced levels of characters known to be related to postponed aging. Selection successfully increased the degree of differentiation of postponed aging stocks with respect to starvation resistance and fecundity, but persistent additive genetic variance suggested that selection did not result in fixation of alleles. The artificially selected stocks were subjected to crosses to test for patterns of dominance and maternal effects. There was little evidence for these effects in the inheritance of the characters underlying postponed aging, even with the increased differentiation of the selected stocks.  相似文献

In the present investigation, the genetic structure of four populations of Catla catla, sequences of mitochondrial gene, cytochrome b (cyto b) from four populations were sequenced and analyzed. The sequences of mitochondrial regions revealed high haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity. The lowest 249 polymorphic sites and 0.00 parsimony informative sites were detected in populations of Fish Federation Pond (CCFFB) whereas highest 330 polymorphic sites and 56 parsimony informative sites were detected in populations of Narmada River (CCNRH) in the cyto b gene sequences in Catla catla populations. The twelve different haplotypes were detected among the four populations studied, lowest population specific haplotype as 2.00 was observed in Fish Federation Pond (CCFFB) and highest was in Population of Narmada River and Tighra reservoir. Sequencing of cyto b gene revealed 12 number of haplotypes (h) with haplotype (gene) diversity (Hd) 0.8736 and nucleotide diversity (π) 0.6474. These data clearly indicated that, feral/wild population showing highest values of polymorphisms, parsimony, haplotype diversity showing good, healthy habitat is lotic water (Narmada River) and lentic water body (Tighra reservoir). The results also concluded that the partial cyto b is polymorphic and can be a potential marker to determine ecological habitat based genetic differentiation among the populations.  相似文献

In outbred sexually reproducing populations, age‐specific mortality rates reach a plateau in late life following the exponential increase in mortality rates that marks aging. Little is known about what happens to physiology when cohorts transition from aging to late life. We measured age‐specific values for starvation resistance, desiccation resistance, time‐in‐motion, and geotaxis in ten Drosophila melanogaster populations: five populations selected for rapid development and five control populations. Adulthood was divided into two stages, the aging phase and the late‐life phase according to demographic data. Consistent with previous studies, we found that populations selected for rapid development entered the late‐life phase at an earlier age than the controls. Age‐specific rates of change for all physiological phenotypes showed differences between the aging phase and the late‐life phase. This result suggests that late life is physiologically distinct from aging. The ages of transitions in physiological characteristics from aging to late life statistically match the age at which the demographic transition from aging to late life occurs, in all cases but one. These experimental results support evolutionary theories of late life that depend on patterns of decline and stabilization in the forces of natural selection.  相似文献

Resistance to environmental stress is one of the most important forces molding the distribution and abundance of species. We investigated the evolution of desiccation stress resistance using 20 outbred Drosophila melanogaster populations directly selected in the laboratory for adult desiccation resistance (D), postponed senescence (O), and their respective controls (C and B). Both aging and desiccation selection increased desiccation resistance relative to their controls, creating a spectrum of desiccation resistance levels across selection treatments. We employed an integrative approach, merging data on the life histories of these populations with a detailed physiology of water balance. The physiological basis of desiccation resistance may be mechanisms enhancing either resource conservation or resource acquisition and allocation. Desiccation-resistant populations had increased water and carbohydrate stores, and showed age-specific patterns of desiccation resistance consistent with the resource accumulation mechanism. A significant proportion of the resources relevant to resistance of the stress were accumulated in the larval stage. Males and females of desiccation-selected lines exhibited distinctly different patterns of desiccation resistance and resource acquisition, in a manner suggesting intersexual antagonism in the evolution of stress resistance. Preadult viability of stress-selected populations was lower than that of controls, and development was slowed. Our results suggest that there is a cost to preadult resource acquisition, pointing out a complex trade-off architecture involving characters distributed across distinct life-cycle stages.  相似文献

How insects evolve resistance or counter-resistance against antagonists is a basic issue in the study of host-parasitoid coevolution. One of the factors that affect their coevolution is fitness costs of resistance and counter-resistance. Here, we assess fitness costs of resistance against the parasitoid Leptopilina victoriae in Drosophila bipectinata on the basis of selection experiments. We made a base population by mixing three geographic fly populations that differed in resistance. The established base population was divided into four populations, two for selection of resistance against a L. victoriae population and two for control. Resistance increased rapidly in response to selection and reached a very high level within four generations in the selected populations, while resistance of the control populations remained low during 20 generations. High resistance of the selected populations was maintained at least for 10 generations after selection was stopped. Both selected populations had lower female longevity than the control populations, and at least one of the selected populations had shorter thorax length, lower female desiccation tolerance and adult heat tolerance than both or either of the control populations. On the other hand, the selected populations had higher male starvation tolerance and longevity than the control populations. There were no significant differences in resistance against another population of L. victoriae and two other parasitoid species between the selected and control populations. These results suggest that the resistance against the L. victoriae population in D. bipectinata may incur some but not so high costs and act parasitoid-species- and/or parasitoid-population-specifically.  相似文献

While it is commonplace for biologists to use the response to environmental manipulation as a guide to evolutionary responses to selection, the relationship between phenotypic plasticity and genetic change is not generally well-established. The life-histories of laboratory Drosophila populations are among the few experimental systems which simultaneously afford information on phenotypic plasticity and evolutionary trajectories. We employed a combination of two replicated selectively differentiated stocks (postponed aging stocks and their controls; 10 populations in total) and two different environmental manipulations (nutrition and mating) to explore the empirical relationship between phenotypic plasticity and evolutionary trajectories. While there are a number of parallels between the results obtained using these two approaches, there are important differences. In particular, as the detail of the biological characterization of either type of response increases, so their disparities multiply. Nonetheless, the combination of environmental manipulation with evolutionary divergence provides valuable information about the biological connections between life-history, caloric reserves, and reproductive physiology in Drososphila.  相似文献

Seven field populations of Xiphinema americanum sensu lato from California''s major agronomic areas were tested for their ability to transmit two nepoviruses, including the prune brownline, peach yellow bud, and grapevine yellow vein strains of tomato ringspot virus and the bud blight strain of tobacco ringspot virus. Two field populations transmitted all isolates, one population transmitted all tomato ringspot virus isolates but failed to transmit bud blight strain of tobacco ringspot virus, and the remaining four populations failed to transmit any virus. Only one population, which transmitted all isolates, bad been associated with field spread of a nepovirus. As two California populations of Xiphinema americanum sensu lato were shown to have the ability to vector two different nepoviruses, a nematode taxonomy based on a parsimony of virus-vector relationship is not practical for these populations. Because two California populations of X. americanum were able to vector tobacco ringspot virus, commonly vectored by X. americanum in the eastern United States, these western populations cannot be differentiated from eastern populations by vector capability tests using tobacco ringspot virus.  相似文献

Linkage mapping based on multiple-line crosses is a promising strategy for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying important agronomic traits. The main goal of this survey was to study the advantages of QTL mapping across versus within biparental populations using experimental data from three connected sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) populations evaluated for beet yield and potassium and sodium content. For the combined analysis across populations, we used two approaches for cofactor selection. In Model A, we assumed identical cofactors for every segregating population. In contrast, in Model B we selected cofactors specific for every segregating population. Model A performed better than Model B with respect to the number of QTL detected and the total proportion of phenotypic variance explained. The QTL analyses across populations revealed a substantially higher number of QTL compared to the analyses of single biparental populations. This clearly emphasizes the potential to increase QTL detection power with a joint analysis across biparental populations.  相似文献

1. Despite considerable theoretical work, the evolution of population stability has rarely been investigated empirically. Moreover, it is not clear whether different stability properties of a population evolve together, or independently. 2. We investigate the evolution of two aspects of population stability using laboratory populations of Drosophila melanogaster selected for faster preadult development and early reproduction, and their matched controls. 3. We show that the constancy stability of the selected populations is significantly higher than their controls, confirming a previous observation that population stability can evolve as a by-product of life-history evolution. This enhanced constancy stability is due to a reduced maximal per capita growth rate, brought about by a reduction in fecundity of the selected populations as a result of the trade-off between developmental rate and fecundity. 4. Persistence stability, as reflected by the probability of extinction, does not differ significantly between selected and control populations. 5. We also show how seemingly trivial experimental details, such as the protocol for restarting extinct populations, can interact with life-history traits to alter the manifestation of the stability properties of a population.  相似文献

Selection has been used to create replicated outbred stocks of Drosophila melanogaster with increased longevity, increased later fecundity, and increased levels of physiological performance at later ages. The present study analyzed the quantitative transmission patterns of such stocks, employing extensive replication in numbers of stocks, individuals, and assayed characters. The populations used derived from five lines with postponed aging and five control lines, all created in 1980 from the same founding base population. The following characters were studied: early 24-hr fecundity, early ovary weight, early female starvation resistance, early male starvation resistance, female longevity and male longevity. Numerous crosses were performed to test for non-Mendelian inheritance, average dominance, maternal effects, sex-linkage and between-line heterogeneity. There was only slight evidence for any of these phenomena arising reproducibly in the characters studied. These findings suggest the value of this set of stocks for studies of the physiological basis of postponed aging.  相似文献

Here we report the results of a study aimed at examining stability of adult emergence and activity/rest rhythms under semi-natural conditions (henceforth SN), in four large outbred fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster populations, selected for emergence in a narrow window of time under laboratory (henceforth LAB) light/dark (LD) cycles. When assessed under LAB, selected flies display enhanced stability in terms of higher amplitude, synchrony and accuracy in emergence and activity rhythms compared to controls. The present study was conducted to assess whether such differences in stability between selected and control populations, persist under SN where several gradually changing time-cues are present in their strongest form. The study revealed that under SN, emergence waveform of selected flies was modified, with even more enhanced peak and narrower gate-width compared to those observed in the LAB and compared to control populations in SN. Furthermore, flies from selected populations continued to exhibit enhanced synchrony and accuracy in their emergence and activity rhythms under SN compared to controls. Further analysis of zeitgeber effects revealed that enhanced stability in the rhythmicity of selected flies under SN was primarily due to increased sensitivity to light because emergence and activity rhythms of selected flies were as stable as controls under temperature cycles. These results thus suggest that stability of circadian rhythms in fruit flies D. melanogaster, which evolved as a consequence of selection for emergence in a narrow window of time under weak zeitgeber condition of LAB, persists robustly in the face of day-to-day variations in cycling environmental factors of nature.  相似文献

The Pine Wood Nematode (PWN) Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is a severe forest pathogen in countries where it has been introduced and is considered a worldwide quarantine organism. In this study, protein markers for differentiating populations of this nematode were identified by studying differences among four selected Iberian and one American population. These populations were compared by quantitative proteomics (iTRAQ). From a total of 2860 proteins identified using the public database from the B. xylophilus genome project, 216 were unambiguous and significantly differentially regulated in the studied populations. Comparisons of their pairwise ratio were statistically treated and supported in order to convert them into discrete character states, suggesting that 141 proteins were not informative as population specific markers. Application of the Character Compatibility methodology on the remaining 75 proteins (belonging to families with different biological functions) excludes 27 which are incompatible among them. Considering only the compatible proteins, the method selects a subset of 30 specific unique protein markers which allowed the compared classification of the Iberian isolates. This approach makes it easier search for diagnostic tools and phylogenetic inference within species and populations of a pathogen exhibiting a high level of genetic diversity.  相似文献

In order to describe the genetic diversity of five geographical populations of cuttlefish (Sepiella japonica) along with Chinese coast and determined their phylogenetic relationship, partial mitochondrial COI gene (681bp in length) was amplified from 96 individuals collected from these populations and sequenced. The 5 populations of cuttlefish inhabit Yellow Sea, East China Sea and South China Sea. Out of 22 polymorphic nucleotides identified, 8 were represented by a single sequence, 12 were parsimony informative, which defined 22 haplotypes. Haplotype and nucleotide diversity were low among populations. Of 22 haplotypes, 15 appeared only in a single population, 6 appeared in 2 or 3 populations and 1 was shared by all populations. The COI gene was monomorphic in Qingdao population. The haplotypes identified clustered into 2 clades, each covered individuals from 5 populations each. Pairwise FST were not proportional to the geographical distances. Among the 5 populations, relatively high level of genetic diversity was found in Ningde population which was recommended to be the best choice of germplasm resources for artificial releasing project.  相似文献

Drosophila melanogaster exhibit an increase in fecundity and a decrease in length of life and starvation resistance when the diet is enriched through the addition of live yeast. It has been proposed that this represents a necessary energetic trade-off between reproductive and somatic functions. We examined the metabolic aspects of this trade-off. We measured egg production, dry wt, somatic lipid and carbohydrate storage, and metabolic rate in response to changing amounts of live dietary yeast. These variables were measured in five replicate populations selected for postponed aging and five replicate short lived control populations. We find that all ten populations show an overall increase in egg production and decrease in the amount of stored metabolites in the presence of increasing amounts of yeast. All populations increase metabolic rate in response to increasing amounts of live dietary yeast. The energetics of this phenomenon suggest that increased egg production results from increased acquisition of nutrients available in yeast with only a small redirection of resources from storage to egg production.  相似文献

The role of development in the evolution of postponed senescence is poorly understood despite the existence of a major gerontological theory connecting developmental rate to aging. We investigate the role of developmental rate in the laboratory evolution of aging using 24 distinct populations of Drosophila melanogaster. We have found a significant difference between the larval developmental rates of our Drosophila stocks selected for early (B) and late-life (O) fertility. This larval developmental time difference of approximately 12% (O > B) has been stable for at least 5 yr, occurs under a wide variety of rearing conditions, responds to reverse selection, and is shown for two other O-like selection treatments. Emerging adults from lines with different larval developmental rates show no significant differences in weight at emergence, thorax length, or starvation resistance. Long-developing lines (O, CO, and CB) have greater survivorship from egg to pupa and from pupa to adult, with and without strong larval competition. Crosses between slower developing populations, and a variety of other lines of evidence, indicate that neither mutation accumulation nor inbreeding depression are responsible for the extended development of our late-reproduced selection treatments. These results stand in striking contrast to other recent studies. We argue that inbreeding depression and inadvertent direct selection in other laboratories' culture regimes explain their results. We demonstrate antagonistic pleiotropy between developmental rate and preadult viability. The absence of any correlation between longevity and developmental time in our stocks refutes the developmental theory of aging.  相似文献

We investigated four populations of the grasshopper Chorthippus biguttulus with respect to differences in morphological traits and characteristics of their communication signals. A special focus was laid on possible correlations between morphological and song traits of males that could be used by females to infer quality cues of potential mates. We also tested whether females exhibit preferences for males of their own population. Specific song features (onset accentuation, offset, syllable period) of males—but not of females—differed between populations. We observed size differences both in males and females from different populations, but the size ranks of the two sexes were not always correlated. Environmental factors appear to have a strong influence on different size traits, compared to genetic origin. In all populations a specific song feature, the accentuation of syllable onsets, showed a similar correlation with a morphological trait, hind leg size, but its correlation with other size indicators sometimes differed in sign. Females did not prefer songs of males from their own population. The best predictor for song attractiveness was—unexpectedly—not the onset accentuation but the offset depth.  相似文献

Puccinia psidii sensu lato (s.l.) is the causal agent of eucalyptus and guava rust, but it also attacks a wide range of plant species from the myrtle family, resulting in a significant genetic and physiological variability among populations accessed from different hosts. The uredospores are crucial to P. psidii dissemination in the field. Although they are important for the fungal pathogenesis, their molecular characterization has been poorly studied. In this work, we report the first in-depth proteomic analysis of P. psidii s.l. uredospores from two contrasting populations: guava fruits (PpGuava) and eucalyptus leaves (PpEucalyptus). NanoUPLC-MSE was used to generate peptide spectra that were matched to the UniProt Puccinia genera sequences (UniProt database) resulting in the first proteomic analysis of the phytopathogenic fungus P. psidii. Three hundred and fourty proteins were detected and quantified using Label free proteomics. A significant number of unique proteins were found for each sample, others were significantly more or less abundant, according to the fungal populations. In PpGuava population, many proteins correlated with fungal virulence, such as malate dehydrogenase, proteossomes subunits, enolases and others were increased. On the other hand, PpEucalyptus proteins involved in biogenesis, protein folding and translocation were increased, supporting the physiological variability of the fungal populations according to their protein reservoirs and specific host interaction strategies.  相似文献

Selection for ethanol tolerance was equally successful in two populations of D. melanogaster in both of which the frequency of AdhF was 0.5 at the start of the experiment. Increased tolerance to ethanol was not invariably associated with increased frequencies of AdhF. In one population alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity was significantly higher in three of the four selected sublines compared with their controls but there was no difference in activity between the selected and control sublines in the second population. The level of ADH activity in the control and selected lines was significantly correlated with the frequency of AdhF, but not with ethanol tolerance. These results show that adaptation to environmental alcohols in populations of D. melanogaster can be independent of the ADH system.  相似文献
