Question: What is the value of using Rhinanthus minor in grassland restoration and can restrictions on its establishment be overcome? Location: England (United Kingdom). Methods: Two experiments were established to determine the efficacy of inoculating R. minor on a suite of four agriculturally improved grasslands and the efficacy of using R. minor in grassland restoration. In Experiment 1, the effect of herbicide gap creation on the establishment and persistence of R. minor in grasslands ranging in productivity was investigated with respect to sward management. In Exp. 2, R. minor was sown at 1000 seeds/m2 in conjunction with a standard meadow mix over a randomized plot design into Lolium perenne grassland of moderate productivity. The treatment of scarification was investigated as a treatment to promote R. minor. Results: Gap size had a significant role in the establishment and performance of R. minor, especially the 30 cm diameter gaps (Exp. 1). However, R. minor failed to establish long‐term persistent populations in all of the agriculturally improved grasslands. In Exp. 2, establishment of R. minor was increased by scarification and its presence was associated with a significant increase in Shannon diversity and the number of sown and unsown species. Values of grass above‐ground biomass were significantly lower in plots sown with R. minor, but values of total above‐ground biomass (including R. minor) and forb biomass (not including R. minor) were not affected. Conclusions: The value of introducing R. minor into species‐poor grassland to increase diversity has been demonstrated, but successful establishment was dependent on grassland type. The scope for using R. minor in grassland restoration schemes is therefore conditional, although establishment can be enhanced through disturbance such as sward scarification.  相似文献

Summary

The Arrhenatheretum on set-aside in two fields at Aldroughty Farm, Elgin, is described. This vegetation is noteworthy because some of the attractive grassland and wetland species in it are very rare on Scottish set-aside. The species involved (e.g. Carex flacca, Dactylorhiza purpurella, Rhinanthus minor) are generally entirely absent from lowland farmed landscapes, but populations do occur in areas of semi-natural habitat at Aldroughty. It is concluded that, as far as most long-term set-aside is concerned, vegetation of greater conservation value does not develop thereon owing to non-availability of the necessary seeds.  相似文献

Root hemiparasites like Rhinanthus angustifolius C.C. Gmel and R. minor L. have a potential to accelerate the restoration of semi-natural grasslands because they may decrease above-ground biomass of the vegetation. This, in turn, may be beneficial for species diversity. It is known that hemiparasites often accumulate high nutrient concentrations in their above-ground parts, resulting in high quality litter. Because of the short life cycle of many parasitic plants, litter is released early in the season and the main part is not removed from the grassland by hay-making. This has been shown to yield an increased nutrient availability locally. We performed an introduction experiment with R. angustifolius and R. minor in three semi-natural grasslands in Flanders (Belgium). In the second year after sowing, the above-ground nitrogen (N) content of the grasses and of the potential host vegetation (excluding the hemiparasite), was increased in the parasitized plots. The reduction of grass (and legume) above-ground biomass in parasitized plots resulted in a decrease in the total above-ground N uptake of grasses, host and total vegetation (ex- and including the parasite, respectively) of the parasitized plots compared to the control. Furthermore, with a tracer experiment (15N), we demonstrated that the N from the added tracer was relatively less available in parasitized plots, suggesting larger soil N pools in these treatments. This is probably the consequence of increased mineralization, resulting from the high-quality, parasitic litter. Further experiments should be conducted to investigate the impact of hemiparasitic Rhinanthus spp., e.g. on the availability of other nutrients such as phosphorus.  相似文献

Techniques that increase the biodiversity value of species-poor grassland are required if conservation targets aimed at reversing the decline in species-rich grassland are to be met. This study investigated the diversification of swards dominated by Lolium perenne by testing the efficacies of two treatments applied to reduce competitive exclusion of species introduced as seed. The ‘biological’ treatment was the addition of the hemiparasitic plant species Rhinanthus minor, whilst the ‘chemical’ approach was the application of a selective graminicide, fluazifop-P-butyl (Fusilade 250EW). Changes in plant community composition were monitored for a period of 2 years. Values of plant species richness increased significantly between years regardless of treatment, but to a greater extent in plots sown with R. minor. The number of established sown species and their cover values were also significantly greater in association with R. minor. Fluazifop-P-butyl had no significant effect on species richness and tended to promote unsown species rather than those introduced as seed. Overall, the R. minor treatment was associated with the greatest impact on sward composition, facilitating establishment and development of the introduced species and promoting forb abundance.  相似文献

Metapopulation theory predicts that species richness and total population density of habitat specialists increase with increasing area and regional connectivity of the habitat. To test these predictions, we examined the relative contributions of habitat patch area, connectivity of the regional habitat network and local habitat quality to species richness and total density of butterflies and day-active moths inhabiting semi-natural grasslands. We studied butterflies and moths in 48 replicate landscapes situated in southwest Finland, including a focal patch and the surrounding network of other semi-natural grasslands within a radius of 1.5 km from the focal patch. By applying the method of hierarchical partitioning, which can distinguish between independent and joint contributions of individual explanatory variables, we observed that variables of the local habitat quality (e.g. mean vegetation height and nectar plant abundance) generally showed the highest independent effect on species richness and total density of butterflies and moths. Habitat area did not show a significant independent contribution to species richness and total density of butterflies and moths. The effect of habitat connectivity was observed only for total density of the declining butterflies and moths. These observations indicate that the local habitat quality is of foremost importance in explaining variation in species richness and total density of butterflies and moths. In addition, declining butterflies and moths have larger populations in well-connected networks of semi-natural grasslands. Our results suggest that, while it is crucial to maintain high-quality habitats by management, with limited resources it would be appropriate to concentrate grassland management and restoration to areas with well-connected grassland networks in which the declining species currently have their strongest populations. Rhinanthus minor andRhinanthus angustifolius are known to hybridize in mixed populations in nature. These hybridization events can have important evolutionary consequences. The development and use of species-specific RAPD and ISSR markers allowed the detection of hybrid individuals not always distinguishable with morphological characters. Two mixed populations of different ages were studied. In a young mixed 2-year-old population, both individuals of the two parental species and F1 hybrids were found using genetic analysis, showing that hybridization occurred rapidly. Flower morphology of F1 hybrids was too variable to distinguish all these hybrids from the parental species. This morphological variability of F1 hybrids was also confirmed in artificial crosses in the greenhouse. In an old and no longer mixed 30-year-old population, onlyR. angustifolius plants and a few genetically introgressed individuals close toR. angustifolius were present. Genetic markers showed traces of past hybridization and introgression. Unidirectional introgression ofR. minor intoR. angustifolius with the complete disappearance ofR. minor from this population was observed.  相似文献

Recent loss of plant species richness in Swedish semi-natural grasslands has led to an increase in grassland recreation and restoration. To increase the establishment of declining species favoured by grazing and to re-establish original species richness, seed sowing has been discussed as a conservation tool. In this study, I examined to what extent seed sowing in former arable fields increases species richness and generates a species composition typical of semi-natural grasslands. Six grassland species favoured by grazing (target species) and six generalist species favoured by ceased grazing, were studied in a seed-addition experiment. Four different seed densities were used on four different grassland categories, two grazed former arable fields, one continuously grazed grassland and one abandoned grassland. Target and generalist species emerged in all grassland categories, but seedling emergence was higher in the grazed than in the abandoned grassland. Target species had higher emergence in the two grasslands with the longest grazing continuity. Seedling emergence and frequency of established plants of each target species were positively associated. The largest fraction of seeds germinated at an intermediate sowing density, 20–50 seeds/dm2, suggesting that aggregation of seeds positively affects emergence up to a certain threshold. In conclusion, artificial seed sowing may induce the recreation of typical grassland communities on former arable fields, which may be an important contribution to increase the total grassland area and species richness in the landscape.  相似文献

  • The facultative root hemi‐parasite Rhinanthus minor is often used in grassland habitat restoration projects to regulate ecosystem structure and function. Its impact on community productivity and diversity as a function of resource supply, sward composition and management has been widely investigated. However, there is a lack of information about the possible influence of seed quality on the efficacy of the hemi‐parasite.
  • Ten seed lots from commercial sources were sown in the field and their germination characteristics investigated in the laboratory. Seeds from four lots were also germinated and sown in pots alongside plants of two host species, Lotus corniculatus and Holcus lanatus. Plant establishment, height and flowering density were evaluated for the hemi‐parasite, while plant biomass was measured for both R. minor and its host.
  • Two aspects of seed quality influenced the field emergence of seed lots of R. minor, the radicle emergence (%) and the length of the lag period from the beginning of imbibition to germination (mean germination time), which indicates seed vigour. A longer lag period (lower vigour) was associated with higher levels of seedling mortality and lower plant vigour, in terms of plant height and biomass accumulation and was also reflected in the parasitic impact of the seed lots.
  • Seed quality, specifically germination and vigour, can influence the establishment, survival, subsequent plant productivity and parasitic impact of R. minor in vegetation restoration projects. Seed quality is discussed as a key factor to consider when predicting the impact of the hemi‐parasite on community productivity and diversity.

Summary Rhinanthus minor (Yellow-rattle) is a widespread hemiparasitic plant of grassland habitats throughout Britain. Association analysis of the dune vegetation at Holme-next-the-Sea in eastern England revealed only two potential host plants through positive association. In contrast direct examination of the root systems revealed haustorial connections with 20 host species. The number of species parasitized by one plant ranged from one to seven. Data from another four sites in Britain and one in central Europe indicate that the natural host range of R. minor encompasses at least 50 species from 18 families with 22% in the Leguminosae and 30% in the Gramineae. Comparison of the number of haustorial connections made to each species with the abundance of roots in the soil shows that R. minor is a highly selective parasite, but that the selectivity is not consistent between populations or between plants from different parts of the same population. The reasons for host selectivity are discussed.  相似文献

In most landscapes the success of habitat restoration is largely dependent on spontaneous colonization of plant species. This colonization process, and the outcome of restoration practices, can only be considered successful if the genetic makeup of founding populations is not eroded through founder effects and subsequent genetic drift. Here we used 10 microsatellite markers to investigate the genetic effects of recent colonization of the long-lived gynodioecious species Origanum vulgare in restored semi-natural grassland patches. We compared the genetic diversity and differentiation of fourteen recent populations with that of thirteen old, putative source populations, and we evaluated the effects of spatial configuration of the populations on colonization patterns. We did not observe decreased genetic diversity in recent populations, or inflated genetic differentiation among them. Nevertheless, a significantly higher inbreeding coefficient was observed in recent populations, although this was not associated with negative fitness effects. Overall population genetic differentiation was low (FST = 0.040). Individuals of restored populations were assigned to on average 6.1 different source populations (likely following the ‘migrant pool’ model). Gene flow was, however, affected by the spatial configuration of the grasslands, with gene flow into the recent populations mainly originating from nearby source populations. This study demonstrates how spontaneous colonization after habitat restoration can lead to viable populations in a relatively short time, overcoming pronounced founder effects, when several source populations are nearby. Restored populations can therefore rapidly act as stepping stones and sources of genetic diversity, likely increasing overall metapopulation viability of the study species.  相似文献

Hybridization in annual plants is rare, but their short life cycle provides an excellent opportunity to study the dynamics of hybridization. Hybridization occurs between the annual hemiparasites Rhinanthus minor and Rhinanthus angustifolius (Orobanchaceae). Using flower morphology, Kwak (1980) found a prevalence of hybrids close to R. angustifolius in a single population. We aim to find whether this pattern is also found using genetic markers, whether it is generally occurring in mixed populations, and whether these populations are stable over time. We used species-specific genetic markers to determine the number of individuals in a range of hybrid classes in three mixed populations of different ages during four consecutive years. In the young population, F1 hybrids were found in the first year and mostly hybrids between R. minor and these F1s in the second year, but in the years after that, hybrids close to R. angustifolius became more abundant. We also found this in the two older populations, where hybrids close to R. angustifolius always occurred in higher frequencies than hybrids close to R. minor. Over time, R. angustifolius strongly increased in frequency in two populations. Patterns of marker presence and absence suggested that advanced-generation hybrids are mainly formed by backcrossing with one of the parents, predominantly R. angustifolius whenever its frequency in the population is higher than 15%. The dynamics of mixed populations depend on the ecological conditions that regulate the presence of the two parental species, and introgression into R. angustifolius seems prevalent.  相似文献

Semi-natural grasslands in Japan have decreased due to management abandonment and urbanization over the last 100 years, but they remain in suburban areas in addition to rural areas. Because suburban grasslands have various land-use histories and disturbance regimes, plant and herbivorous insect communities are likely to differ among grassland types. To identify grasslands with high conservation value, we conducted a comprehensive survey of grasshoppers and plants in 150 grasslands with 5 grassland types differing in land-use history and current management in northern Chiba prefecture, Japan. We then analyzed the association of the distributions of grasshopper and plant species compositions. Our results showed that grasshoppers were classified into habitat specialists and generalists. Three out of four habitat specialists were almost exclusively found in semi-natural grasslands and vacant lots, while habitat generalists were commonly observed at the cropland margins. This habitat specialist–generalist distribution gradient corresponded well to that found in plant communities, which was probably due to current disturbance regimes. We suggest that vacant lots as well as semi-natural grasslands have high conservation value for grassland organisms of various taxa in suburban areas, and grasshoppers are candidate indicator species for monitoring grassland environments.

Restoration of species‐rich grasslands is a key issue of conservation. The transfer of seed‐containing local plant material is a proven technique to restore species‐rich grassland, since it potentially allows to establish genetically variable and locally adapted populations. In our study, we tested how the transfer of local plant material affected the species diversity and composition of restored grasslands and the genetic variation of the typical grassland plant species Knautia arvensis and Plantago lanceolata.For our study, we selected fifteen study sites in southeastern Germany. We analyzed species diversity and composition and used molecular markers to investigate genetic variation within and among populations of the study species from grasslands that served as source sites for restoration and grasslands, which were restored by transfer of green hay and threshed local plant material.The results revealed no significant differences in species diversity and composition between grasslands at source and restoration sites. Levels of genetic variation within populations of the study species Knautia arvensis and Plantago lanceolata were comparable at source and restoration sites and genetic variation among populations at source and their corresponding restoration sites were only marginal different.Our study suggests that the transfer of local plant material is a restoration approach highly suited to preserve the composition of species‐rich grasslands and the natural genetic pattern of typical grassland plant species.  相似文献

Soil disturbance is recognised as an important restoration measure for conserving biodiversity in sandy soils. We used a soil disturbance (ploughing) experiment in a sandy grassland as well as a semi-natural disturbance (slope erosion enhanced by cattle trampling) gradient on a sandy slope to test the soil disturbance effects on the ground-living beetle community. Both experimental disturbance and semi-natural disturbance favoured sandy grassland specialists, but there was no overall effect on beetle richness and abundance. Amara lucida and Harpalus spp. were favoured by disturbance while Calathus melanocephalus was disfavoured. Experimental ploughing significantly increased the proportion of red-listed species in disturbed plots compared to non-disturbed controls. In the semi-natural disturbance gradient we found that the beetle community on the disturbed slope differed from that of the flat areas, and there were tendencies for a higher proportion of red-listed species on the slope. We conclude that increasing the area of bare sand in sandy grasslands can have positive effects on many threatened species. Soil disturbance should thus be included as a regular measure in sandy grasslands under conservation management and as a measure to restore high biodiversity in areas where bare sand is rare.  相似文献

In Central Europe several plant species of dry grasslands are particularly rare. Here I investigate whether habitat requirements, reproduction, and dispersal potential can contribute to the rarity of Astragalus exscapus (Fabaceae) growing in dry grassland habitats in dry regions of Europe. In addition, I question whether historic events might have contributed to the present-day rarity of A. exscapus. To assess habitat requirements of A. exscapus, vegetation composition and soil characteristics were studied in 37 populations in central Germany. Production and dispersal potential of seeds were investigated in 10 populations, and germination and recruitment were assessed in experimental plots in three populations. Vegetation of the habitats included most dry grassland community types occurring in the central German dry region indicating a broad ecological niche of the species within dry subcontinental grasslands. Soil characteristics of the habitats also spanned a wide range. Seed production was moderate. 98% of the seeds sown in the laboratory germinated whereas under natural conditions 20% of the seeds developed seedlings. Half of these seedlings survived for one year but only 4.5% for two years. 90% of the seeds were dispersed less than 50 cm distance indicating a low dispersal potential. I conclude that A. exscapus is mainly limited in dispersal but recruitment limitation might also be important in explaining its rarity. Furthermore, former climate change and postglacial reforestation of the area very likely contribute to the rarity of A. exscapus.  相似文献

Restoration of semi-natural grasslands by cattle grazing is among the most practical options for reversing the decline of northern European floristic diversity, but no studies on this subject are available. In this work the success of restoration of abandoned, privately owned mesic semi-natural grasslands by farmers receiving support from the EU agri-environmental support scheme was studied in southwestern Finland. Three kinds of grasslands were compared: old (continuously cattle grazed), new (cattle grazing restarted 3–8 years ago) and abandoned pastures (grazing terminated >10 years ago). Plant species composition of the three pasture types was floristically different in multivariate analyses (non-metric multidimensional scaling). Total species richness, richness of grassland plants, indicator plants and rare plants were highest in old and lowest in abandoned pastures in all studied spatial scales (0.25–0.8 ha, 1 and 0.01 m2). The results were congruent with different scales and species list definitions, suggesting that species density scale (1 m2) can be used as a partial surrogate for large scale species richness. Species richness of new pastures was 20% higher on 0.25–0.8 ha, 40–50% higher on 1 m2 and 30% higher on the 0.01 m2 scale compared to abandoned grasslands. Rare species showed insignificant response to resumed grazing. Despite problems in management quality, this study showed promising results of restoration of abandoned grasslands by cattle grazing on private farms. However, populations of several rare grassland plants may not recover with present cattle grazing regimes. Management regulations in the agri-environmental support scheme need to be defined more precisely for successful restoration.  相似文献

During the last 50 years, the distribution and abundance of many European butterfly species associated with semi-natural grasslands have declined. This may be the result of deteriorating habitat quality, but habitat loss, resulting in decreasing area and increasing isolation of remaining habitat, is also predicted to result in reduced species richness. To investigate the effects of habitat loss on species richness, we surveyed butterflies in semi-natural grasslands of similar quality and structure, but situated in landscapes of different habitat composition. Using spatially explicit habitat data, we selected one large (6–10 ha) and one small (0.5–2 ha) grassland site (pasture) in each of 24 non-overlapping 28.2 km2 landscapes belonging to three categories differing in the proportion of the area that consisted of semi-natural grasslands. After controlling for local habitat quality, species richness was higher in grassland sites situated in landscapes consisting of a high proportion of grasslands. Species richness was also higher in larger grassland sites, and this effect was more pronounced for sedentary than for mobile species. However, the number of species for a given area did not differ between large and small grasslands. There was also a significant relationship between butterfly species richness and habitat quality in the form of vegetation height and abundance of flowers. In contrast, butterfly density was not related to landscape composition or grassland size. When species respond differently to habitat area or landscape composition this leads to effects on community structure, and nestedness analysis showed that depauperate communities were subsets of richer ones. Both grassland area and landscape composition may have contributed to this pattern, implying that small habitat fragments and landscapes with low proportions of habitat are both likely to mainly contain common generalist species. Based on these results, conservation efforts should aim at preserving landscapes with high proportions of the focal habitat.  相似文献

Phleum hirsutum Honck. subsp. ambiguum (Ten.) Tzvelev is an important component of the vegetation of some semi-natural grassland habitats of central and southern Italy and especially of those referring to the 6210* habitat (Directive 92/43/EEC). Seeds of this species are required for the execution of restoration works concerning this habitat. Therefore, the recovery and the study of autochthonous germplasm are needed. This study focused on the intra-specific variations in seed mass and size and in seed germination behavior in this species since the knowledge of these aspects can be very useful in the planning of restoration projects. The present research evidenced significant differences in mean seed mass and size in the populations studied that were correlated to the precipitation values of their collection sites. Studied seeds are able to germinate under a wide range of temperatures. They reached their maximum germination between 5 and 25°C and are capable of germination even at 30°C but with a remarkable reduction in germination percentage. Temperature was found to strongly influence germination, especially in terms of the speed. Light was found to enhance germination in almost all the populations studied while the removal of outer covering structures was found to be of no effect.  相似文献

For root hemiparasites, host plants are both the source of water and nutrients below-ground, but competitors for light above-ground. Hemiparasites can reduce host biomass, and in this way considerably affect the whole plant community. To investigate these effects, we carried out two experiments in an oligotrophic meadow with a native population of Rhinanthus minor. In the first experiment, removal of R. minor was combined with fertilization in a factorial design, and in the second one, we manipulated R. minor density by thinning. The presence of R. minor decreased the biomass of its host community, mostly by suppressing grasses. In this way, the species was able to counterbalance the effect of fertilization, which increased community biomass and in particular that of grasses. Neither the presence of R. minor nor fertilization affected the total number of species or the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’) of the host community. However, H’ of grasses was higher and H’ of forbs (non-leguminous dicots) was lower in the presence of R. minor. Reduction of grasses by R. minor favored mainly the dominant forb Plantago lanceolata, which partly acquired the role of a competitive dominant. Effects of R. minor on community diversity seem to be highly dependent on the relative sensitivities of dominant and subordinate species. Fertilization increased the mortality of seedlings, resulting in a lower number of flowering plants. However, surviving individuals on average produced more flowers. Thinning resulted in lower mortality of R. minor plants. This indicates that intraspecific competition in R. minor populations results in negative density dependence.  相似文献

The swamp deer (Rucervus duvaucelii) occurs, primarily, in the wet grasslands of the Himalayan foothills as well as the dry grasslands of central India. Three subspecies have been identified, namely R. duvaucelii duvaucelii, R. duvaucelii branderi and R. duvaucelii ranjitsinhi. Degradation of grassland habitats led to a drastic decline in the total swamp deer population in the early 19th century. Even though the species has recently shown signs of recovery, it is still vulnerable to the small-population paradigm. Effective management plans need to be put in place to increase the population through scientific intervention. The current genetic variation within the three subspecies of R. duvaucelii is unclear, and this is hindering effective conservation planning. We examined the genetic variability, population structure and demography of the three subspecies of swamp deer using the mtDNA control region and microsatellite analysis. Despite the spatial isolation of the populations, we found a high level of variation and weak divergence among the subspecies. The genetic differentiation (F ST ) between the subspecies and the mismatch distribution of haplotypes indicated recent colonization by these subspecies. Population bottleneck analysis indicated that the existing subspecies and their populations are at demographic equilibrium and are stable. The study highlights the need for effective conservation management intervention to maintain the population size and genetic diversity. It also indicates that all the subspecies need to be managed as separate conservation units.  相似文献
