Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) K99 is one of the major pathogens associated with calf diarrhea. The induction of passive immunity in animals by immunoglobulin Y and using probiotics are inexpensive alternatives to antibiotics for the prevention and treatment of a number of bacterial infections, including diarrhea. Hence, the aim of this research was to evaluate the impact of dietary probiotics and ETEC K99-specific egg yolk antibody supplements, alone and in combination with each other, on health and growth parameters, diarrhea incidence and immune stimulation in newborn Holstein calves. One hundred and twenty neonatal calves were allocated randomly into 4 dietary groups (n = 30 per group) received colostrum/milk without any additives (control group), or supplemented with egg yolk powder contained E. coli K99-specific antibody (Ab group; 1 g/day), a commercial probiotic, Hypro-calves (Pro group; 3 g/day), and their combination (Ab + Pro group), from day (d) 1 to d28 of age. Analyses of the growth parameters, feed efficiency, fecal score, and microbiota and immune function were carried out on d0, 14, 21, and 28 of the experiment. Calves in Ab or Ab + Pro group had higher (P < 0.05) average daily gain compared to control and Pro groups during 0–14d. Feed efficiency of calves in Ab and Ab + Pro groups was significantly higher than that in control group during the period of 0–14d; however, no significant differences were observed in 0–28d period. Diarrhea prevalence and fecal score in Ab + Pro group were lower than control group (P < 0.05). Calves in Ab + Pro group had the lowest number of fecal E. coli in comparison to other groups on d28 (P < 0.05). Feeding Ab + Pro supplement increased (P < 0.05) concentrations of blood IgA and serum CD4 compared to the control group. Likewise, calves in Pro group had higher CD4 levels as compared to the control calves (P < 0.05). Serum concentration of interferon-gamma in control group was lower than other groups (P < 0.05). Overall, these data suggest that feeding a combination of probiotic and specific antibody against ETEC to neonate Holstein calves enhances feed efficiency, boosts immunity, and reduces diarrhea prevalence.  相似文献

Optimizing feeding regimens in early life to maximize lifelong growth and production are essential in the dairy industry. This study investigated the effects of milk replacer (MR) feeding frequency and calf age on behavior, and glucose and insulin kinetics of pre- and post-weaned calves fed an elevated plane of MR. Ten male Holstein calves (42.2±1.8 kg BW) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to two treatments offering 8 l MR/day (150 g/l) in two (2×; meal size 4 l) or four (4×; meal size 2 l) feedings via an automated calf feeder. Milk replacer was gradually stepped down by 1 l/day during week 8, with calves being weaned by week 9. Water and pelleted calf starter were offered ad libitum. Individual intake of MR and starter were recorded daily, and BW was recorded weekly. The number of visits to the MR feeder (rewarded and unrewarded), and behaviors such as lying, cross-sucking, non-nutritive sucking and occupancy time in the feeder were recorded for individual calves from weeks 4 to 10. Jugular catheters were placed on weeks 4, 7 and 10 to facilitate postprandial blood sampling and glucose tolerance tests. Statistical analysis was conducted using the PROC GLIMMIX procedure (SAS) for behavioral observations, and the MIXED procedure (SAS) with repeated measures for BW, intake, plasma glucose and plasma insulin data. Final BW, starter and MR intake did not differ between treatments. There were no differences in observed calf behaviors; with the exception that 2× calves visited the MR feeder more often (P<0.01; total: unrewarded and rewarded). Baseline concentrations (mmol/l) and the maximum change in glucose (delta, mmol/l) were greater and lower (P=0.02) in 4×compared to 2×calves, respectively. Postprandial insulin AUC240 tended (P=0.09) to be greater in 2×calves, compared to 4×calves at week 7. Similarly, Tmax (min), AUC240 and delta values (µU/ml) were greater (P⩽0.05) in 2×calves, compared to 4×calves. No treatment ×age interactions were observed for glucose or insulin during the glucose tolerance tests. Therefore, we conclude that feeding an elevated plane of MR (8 l/day) at a lower frequency (2× v. 4×) increased feeder visits, but not other hunger-related behaviors, and while postprandial glucose and insulin parameters varied, insulin sensitivity remained stable in Holstein dairy calves up to 10 weeks of age in calves consuming similar levels of calf starter.  相似文献

ObjectiveThere are varied reports on the effect of vitamin D supplementation on β-cell function and plasma glucose levels. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of vitamin D and calcium supplementation on β-cell function and plasma glucose levels in subjects with vitamin D deficiency.MethodsNondiabetic subjects (N = 48) were screened for their serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD), albumin, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, and intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) status. Subjects with 25-OHD deficiency underwent a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test. Cholecalciferol (9,570 international units [IU]/day; tolerable upper intake level, 10,000 IU/day; according to the Endocrine Society guidelines for vitamin D supplementation) and calcium (1 g/day) were supplemented.ResultsThirty-seven patients with 25-OHD deficiency participated in the study. The baseline and postvitamin D/calcium supplementation and the difference (corrected) were: serum calcium, 9 ± 0.33 and 8.33 ± 1.09 mg/dL (− 0.66 ± 1.11 mg/dL); 25-OHD, 8.75 ± 4.75 and 36.83 ± 18.68 ng/mL (28.00 ± 18.33 ng/mL); PTH, 57.9 ± 29.3 and 36.33 ± 22.48 pg/mL (− 20.25 ± 22.45 pg/mL); fasting plasma glucose, 78.23 ± 7.60 and 73.47 ± 9.82 mg/dL (− 4.88 ± 10.65 mg/dL); and homeostasis model assessment-2–percent β-cell function C-peptide secretion (HOMA-2–%B C-PEP), 183.17 ± 88.74 and 194.67 ± 54.71 (11.38 ± 94.27). Significant differences were observed between baseline and post-vitamin D/calcium supplementation serum levels of corrected calcium (Z, − 3.751; P < .0001), 25-OHD (Z, − 4.9; P < .0001), intact PTH (Z, − 4.04; P < .0001), fasting plasma glucose (Z, − 2.7; P < .007), and HOMA-2–%B C-PEP (Z, − 1.923; P < .05) as determined by Wilcoxon signed rank test. Insulin resistance as measured by HOMA was unchanged.ConclusionOptimizing serum 25-OHD concentrations and supplementation with calcium improves fasting plasma glucose levels and β-cell secretory reserve. Larger randomized control studies are needed to determine if correction of 25-OHD deficiency will improve insulin secretion and prevent abnormalities of glucose homeostasis. In vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryonic development of mature and meiotically arrested porcine oocytes were compared in the present study. After in vitro maturation (IVM) of cumulus-oocyte complexes for 48 h, 75.4% of them extruded a visible polar body (PB). Most of the oocytes with a first polar body (PB+ group) were at the metaphase-II (M-II) stage (91.4%). Most of the oocytes without a visible polar body (PB− group) appeared to be arrested at the germinal vesicle (GV) (41.6%) and metaphase-I (M-I) (34.0%) stages. After IVF of oocytes (day of IVF = Day 0), there was no difference between PB+ and PB groups in rates of sperm penetration, mono-spermy, however oocyte activation rate after penetration was greater in the PB+ than in the PB− group (P < 0.05). On Day 2, there was no difference between rates of embryos cleaved at the 2–4 cell stages in PB+ and PB− groups (42.1 ± 48.8% and 33.6 ± 2.1%, respectively). On Day 4, the rate of PB+ embryos developing beyond the 4-cell stage was greater than that of PB− embryos (P < 0.05, 31.7 ± 3.9% and 14.1 ± 1.5%, respectively), and PB+ embryos had more cells than the PB− embryos (P < 0.05, 8.3 ± 0.4 and 6.0 ± 0.8 cells, respectively). On Day 6, a greater proportion of PB+ embryos developed to the blastocyst stage than did PB− embryos (P < 0.05, 34.6 ± 2.4% and 20.7 ± 2.8%, respectively). However, when the GV oocytes of the PB− group were not included in recalculations, there was no difference in blastocyst rates between M-I arrested and M-II oocytes (35.3 and 34.6%, respectively). The number of blastomere nuclei in embryos obtained from the PB+ group (52.0 ± 2.5) was greater than that from the PB− group (P < 0.05, 29.1 ± 2.8). The proportion of degenerated parts in the blastocysts, as determined by morphological appearance, was the same in the PB+ and PB− groups. Although the quality of PB+ embryos was enhanced as compared with that of the PB− group, the proportion of inner cell mass and trophectoderm cells in PB+ and PB− blastocysts did not differ (1:1.9 and 1:2.2, respectively). Chromosome analysis revealed that PB+ blastocysts had more diploidy (P < 0.05, 69.7%) than did PB− blastocysts (44.0%), whereas PB− blastocysts had more triploid cells (P < 0.05, 34.0%) than did PB+ oocytes (8.4%). These results indicate that pig oocytes arrested before the M-II stage (M-I oocytes) undergo cytoplasmic maturation during maturation culture and have the same ability to develop to blastocysts after IVF as M-II oocytes, but some of them resulted in degeneration or delayed development with poor embryo quality.  相似文献

Dairy calves may benefit from extending the duration of feeding transition milk (TM; the subsequent two to six milkings after parturition) to enhance performance and health during early life. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of replacing pasteurized waste milk (non-saleable milk containing antibiotic and/or drug residues) with pasteurized TM for 3 weeks on the growth performance and health of dairy calves. A total of 84 healthy newborn female Holstein calves were blocked by birth order and assigned randomly to 4 treatment groups with partial replacement of pasteurized waste milk by TM (second milkings after parturition) at 0 (0 l/day TM + 6 l/day milk), 0.5 (0.5 l/day TM + 5.5 l/day milk), 1 (1 l/day TM + 5 l/day milk), or 2 l (2 l/day TM + 4 l/day milk) for a 21-day period. From day 22 onward, all calves were fed individually with 6 l/day pasteurized waste milk. Calves were weaned on day 60 and monitored until day 90 of the study. Liquid feed DM intake (DMI) was increased with increasing levels of TM (P = 0.001). Starter feed DMI and total DMI (liquid feed DMI + starter feed DMI) were not affected by the treatment effect. Calves were fed 2 l/day TM gained more BW compared with those in the control group during the postweaning and overall periods. The average daily gain tended (P = 0.06) to be higher in calves fed 2 l/day TM compared with calves fed 0 (+ 65 g/day), 0.5 (+ 53 g/day), or 1 (+ 76 g/day) l/day TM during the preweaning period. Daily weight gain was also higher in calves fed 2 l/day TM compared with calves in the control group during the postweaning (+ 137 g/day; P = 0.04) and overall (+ 89 g/day; P < 0.01) periods, respectively. Calves fed 2 l/day TM had a higher feed efficiency compared with calves in the control group during all studied periods. The calves fed TM2 had a lower chance of having diarrhea compared with other treatment groups. Duration but not the frequency of diarrhea was lower in calves fed TM2 vs TM0 (2.5 vs 4.2 days; P = 0.03). In general, partial replacement of waste milk with TM (2 l/day) may be recommended to feed dairy calves at an early stage of life to support a higher growth rate and health benefits.  相似文献

An animal expresses its physiological and well-being status by its behaviour. Changes in behaviour can be associated with health, production or well-being problems and therefore with the profitability of the farm. The objectives of the present study were to analyse lying patterns of healthy cows, collected with a commercial behaviour sensor, in early lactation in relation to environmental conditions, age of the cow and production performance. In future, these results may be used as a ‘baseline’ for detection of alterations in behaviour that indicate health problems. The study involved 210 healthy multiparous Israeli Holstein cows in three commercial dairy farms. Only healthy cows during the first 28 days after calving were included in this study. Data were analysed in relation to calving season, age of cows and correlation between milk production and lying time. The results show that lying time increased significantly with age and is significantly (P < 0.05) higher in winter than in summer (summer lactation 2: 491 ± 17 min/day (mean ± SD), summer lactation 3 and more: 520 ± 25 min/day, winter lactation 2: 531 ± 25 min/day, winter lactation 3 and more: 579 ± 38 min/day).The proportion of positively and negatively milk production and lying time correlated cows is affected by calving season. This study indicates that behaviour variables in early lactation are affected by calving season, lactation number and type of correlation between milk production and lying time.  相似文献

The impact of playbacks of recorded sow nursing grunts on the development of nursing behaviour in sows from two genotypes was studied. Yorkshire × Landrace (YL; n = 16) and 25% Meishan (MH; n = 16) gilts were equally divided in two groups: (1) no playback, and (2) playbacks of recorded sow nursing grunts at 35-min intervals. Recordings were played from day 110 of gestation until day 27 of lactation. Sow behaviour was videotaped for 24 h every 4 days, from days 6 to 26 of lactation. Playbacks decreased nursing intervals in MH (34.9 min versus 38.2 ± 1.1 min) without altering it in YL (37.9 min versus 36.5 ± 1.1 min; breed × treatment, P < 0.05), although this effect in MH was likely due to the increased frequency of non-productive nursings seen on days 6, 10 and 14 (P < 0.05) in sows subjected to playbacks. In both breeds, the interval between nursings increased (P < 0.01) from day 6 (33.7 ± 0.8 min) to 26 (40.8 ± 0.8 min) of lactation, the interval between non-productive nursings (NPN) remained similar (P > 0.1) and sows, compared to piglets within a litter, ended more nursings as lactation advanced (P < 0.01). More nursings were terminated by sows in MH than in YL (P < 0.01) whereas more nursings were terminated by piglets from YL than MH sows (P < 0.05). Playbacks or genotype did not alter the amount of time over a 24 h period that sows spent standing, sitting, lying on the belly or lying with the udder exposed (P > 0.1), but sows spent more time sitting, standing and lying on the belly and less time lying with the udder exposed as lactation advanced (P < 0.01). Posture changes were more frequent for MH than YL sows (P < 0.01) and increased as lactation advanced in both genotypes (P < 0.01). In conclusion, the effects of playbacks on nursing behaviour differed between genotypes: playbacks decreased nursing intervals in MH sows only, although this was likely due to an increase in NPN.  相似文献

In Ireland there is growing interest in managing dairy cows on out-wintering pads (OWPs) during the winter, as a low cost alternative to housing indoors. This study investigated feeding and lying behaviour of two breeds of dairy cow (Holstein-Friesian and Norwegian Red) at pasture (PAS) and in winter (WIN) confinement. Cows (n = 36) were managed as one herd while lactating at PAS, then dried off on entering WIN on 17 November 2005 and assigned to one of the three treatments using a randomised complete block design: (1) indoor matted cubicles [IC], (2) unsheltered OWP [UP] and (3) sheltered OWP [CP] (feed system = concrete feedface). Feeding behaviour was recorded for 1 × 24 h period during PAS and WIN using IGER grazing behaviour recorders. Standing/lying was recorded every 5 min for 2 × 24 h periods at PAS and 1 × 24 h period during WIN using modified voltage dataloggers (Tinytag Plus, Chichester, UK). Although not compared statistically, cows spent more time feeding at PAS (530.7 ± 69.66 min/day) than in any winter confinement system (UP, IC, CP = 453.9 ± 37.36, IC = 462.7 ± 37.31 and CP = 505.9 ± 37.36 min/day). In contrast, cows spent more time lying during the winter period (UP, IC, CP = 11.7 ± 0.45, IC = 10.8 ± 0.39 and CP = 11.0 ± 0.39 h/day) than when at PAS (9.4 h/day). Holstein-Friesian cows had a higher bite rate and fewer mastications while feeding, than Norwegian Red cows (P < 0.05 for both). Shorter feeding times at WIN were likely primarily due to lower metabolic requirements associated with the dry period, although the higher fibre content of the silage may also have contributed. The increase in ruminating times between PAS and WIN is likely also due to the higher fibre content of silage than grass. Differences in feeding behaviour between breeds may be indicative of reduced motivation to ingest food quickly. This may be an indirect consequence of a selection index that has led to improvements in body condition and self-maintenance. The similarity in lying and feeding times during WIN indicates that during these winter weather conditions the feeding and lying behaviour of cows on unsheltered OWPs was not inhibited compared with sheltered cows.  相似文献

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) dietary supplementation reduces milk fat content and yield, but its effects on lipid metabolism and energy status remain controversial. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary CLA on adipose tissue (AT) mRNA abundance of genes related to lipid metabolism, plasma indicators of metabolic status, body condition score (BCS) and BW changes in dairy cows. Sixteen multiparous Holstein cows (3.2 ± 1.4 lactations, 615 ± 15 kg BW) were randomly assigned to treatments: 1) CLA; rumen-protected CLA (75 g/d) or 2) Control; equivalent amount of rumen inert fatty acid (FA) as the previous diet (78 g/d), from − 20.2 ± 3.2 (mean ± SEM) to 21 d relative to calving (d 0). Subcutaneous AT was biopsied from the tail-head region at d 21 to determine the mRNA abundance of genes related to lipid metabolism. Blood samples were collected at − 20.2 ± 3.2, 0, 7, 14 and 21 d relative to calving to determine plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), insulin and glucose. Conjugated linoleic acid decreased milk fat yield and milk fat content by 15 and 16%, respectively. Cows fed CLA had lower plasma NEFA and BHBA and greater glucose and insulin concentrations (P < 0.05). Mean BCS at 21 d postpartum was greater (P < 0.01; 2.89 vs 2.25), and BCS loss from the day of enrollment to 21 d postpartum was reduced (P < 0.01; − 0.13 vs − 0.64) in the CLA group. The expression of acylcoenzyme A oxidase, carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A, hormone-sensitive lipase, β2 adrenergic receptor and acetyl-CoA carboxylase was downregulated by CLA supplementation, whereas the expression of sterol regulatory element binding protein, lipoprotein lipase and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma was upregulated (P < 0.01). In summary, CLA-supplemented cows showed signs of better metabolic status and less severe fat mobilization. Moreover, CLA increased mRNA abundance of genes related to lipogenesis and decreased mRNA abundance of genes related to FA oxidation and lipolysis in the AT of dairy cows during early lactation.  相似文献

Early-life nutrition affects calf development and thus subsequent performance. The aim of this study was to examine the effect plane of nutrition on growth, feeding behaviour and systemic metabolite concentrations of artificially reared dairy bull calves. Holstein-Friesian (F; n=42) and Jersey (J; n=25) bull calves with a mean±SD age (14±4.7 v. 27±7.2 days) and BW (47±5.5 v. 33±4.7 kg) were offered a high, medium or low plane of nutrition for 8 weeks using an electronic feeding system which recorded a range of feed-related events. Calves were weighed weekly and plasma samples were collected via jugular venipuncture on weeks 1, 4 and 7 relative to the start of the trial period. The calves offered a high plane of nutrition had the greatest growth rate. However, the increased consumption of milk replacer led to a reduction in feed efficiency. Holstein-Friesian calves offered a low plane of nutrition had the greatest number of daily unrewarded visits to the feeder (P<0.001). β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentrations were greater in F calves on a low plane of nutrition (P<0.001). Although there was no effect of plane of nutrition, BHB concentrations in F calves increased before weaning, concomitant with an increase in concentrate consumption. Urea concentrations were unaffected by plane of nutrition within either breed. Jersey calves on a low plane of nutrition tended to have lower triglycerides than those on a high plane (P=0.08), but greater than those on a medium plane (P=0.08). Holstein-Friesian calves offered a high plane of nutrition tended to have greater triglyceride concentrations than those on a medium plane (P=0.08). Triglycerides increased from the start to the end of the feeding period (P<0.05), across both breeds. A medium plane of nutrition resulted in a growth, feeding behaviour and metabolic response comparable with a high plane of nutrition in pre-weaned bull calves of both F and J breeds.  相似文献

The objective of three experiments was to determine the influence of high condensed tannin (CT) grain sorghum on gastrointestinal parasite fecal egg counts (FEC). Sixteen naturally infected Boer crossbred mixed-sex goats were used. Animals that were supplemented with grain daily were removed from pasture and placed in individual pens and fed treatment diets for 21 or 14 days (Experiment 3). Goats were allowed ad libitum access to water and diets containing high or low CT cracked grain sorghum. On day 0 and every 7 days thereafter, PCV, FEC and FAMACHA® eyelid color scores (EYE; Experiment 1 only) were recorded. For Experiment 1, percentage of animals dewormed, PCV and EYE were not influenced by treatment and averaged 13.6 ± 4.5% per treatment period, 23.4 ± 0.8% and 3.2 ± 0.12, respectively, for all animals. The FEC increased after day 0 for control but not high tannin grain sorghum fed goats (treatment by day interaction, P < 0.02). As expected, EYE and PCV were negatively related (r = −0.45; P < 0.0005). For Experiment 2, there was no influence of diet on PCV or FEC, but there was an effect of day on FEC (P < 0.002) in which all goats had higher FEC on day 0 (1956 ± 219 eggs/g) than any other sampling day. For Experiment 3, there was no effect of feeding high CT grain sorghum on FEC (2992 ± 591 eggs/g) or PCV (25.1 ± 0.5%). In these studies, high CT grain sorghum did not consistently influence FEC and did not impact PCV or number of animals requiring chemical anthelmintic treatment.  相似文献

The objectives of the study were to determine a practical method of using predetermined sexed semen in Sika deer (Cervus nippon). Semen was collected by electro-ejaculation from two Sika stags and transported to the laboratory and separated into X- and Y-chromosome-bearing sperm after analysis and re-analysis (using a modified high-speed cell sorter), or control (unsorted) semen. Eighty-four Sika hinds were inseminated with 2.8 × 107 unsorted (control) or 2.3 × 106 sorted (X or Y) frozen-thawed semen via intra-uterine laparoscopy 58–66 h after removal of intra-vaginal progesterone-impregnated CIDR devices and the administration of 330 IU PMSG at the time of CIDR removal. No significant differences in the post-thaw motility of control (43.4 ± 4.4%), X- (45.3 ± 4.5%) and Y-sorted (43.5 ± 3.2%) samples were recorded. The sorted frozen-thawed sperm (X, 72.5 ± 6.4%: Y, 75.2 ± 5.5%) recorded significantly (P < 0.05) more intact acrosomes following thawing than the unsorted frozen-thawed (68.2 ± 10.2%) sperm. The individual Sika stags had no effect on the post-thaw sperm motility. Sorted frozen-thawed sperm demonstrated a significantly shorter survival time after thawing than the control sperm (P < 0.05). The number of Sika hinds pregnant following insemination with unsorted or control thawed sperm was significantly higher (33/42; 78.6%) than for hinds inseminated with either X- (5/11; 45.5%) or Y-sorted sperm (15/31; 48.4%). Ultimately 14 out of the 15 calves produced by Sika hinds inseminated with Y-sorted sperm were male (92.9%) and 5/5 calves (100%) from Sika hinds inseminated with X-sorted sperm were female. The sex ratio of the calves born to hinds inseminated with sex-sorted sperm significantly (P < 0.05) deviated for the 48.5% (female, 16/33) and 51.5% (male, 17/33) in the control group. All calves were born between 230 d and 243 d of gestation. Male and female calves in the control group had similar birth and weaning weights as calves from hinds inseminated with X- or Y-sorted sperm. In conclusion it can be said that normal calves of the predicted sex may be produced after intra-uterine insemination conducted by laparoscopy with low numbers of sex-sorted cryopreserved Sika sperm.  相似文献

Use of a blindfold or hood during handling and restraint has been suggested for many wild and captive animals. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of blindfolds on beef cattle during restraint. In Experiment 1, 60 beef heifers, naı̈ve to the restraint facility, were randomly assigned to either visual restriction (blindfold) or no visual restriction (control) and tested daily during a 4-day trial to determine the effects during restraint. Heart rate (HR) was measured via telemetry, during a baseline period prior to treatment and continuously recorded during a 1-min period of restraint, which included some manipulation of the animal. Manipulation was initiated 15 s into the restraint period. Two persons simultaneously approached the animal one on either side, grasped the ears, and touched the neck, sides and rump to simulate normal management tasks. Electronic strain gauges attached to the head gate quantified the animal’s struggle during this procedure. These were used to determine the average and maximum exertion forces upon the head gate during restraint. The association between treatment, sample time (day 0–4), animal weight and the various outcome measures were analyzed using a generalized estimating equation method. Mean HR of heifers did not differ at the end of the treatment (95.04±4.66 bpm ) (P=0.64), but the HR tended to decrease more for blindfolded heifers compared to controls during restraint (average decrease 16.3±3.2 bpm and 14±2.9 bpm, respectively) (P=0.10). The average exertion forces applied by blindfolded heifers against the head gate were 23% lower (P<0.05) during the 1-min period and maximum forces were 28% lower (P<0.01). Heart rate and exertion forces declined over the 4 days for both treatment groups (P<0.001). In Experiment 2, 93 commercial beef calves (average age 92.9±2.0 days) were randomly assigned to either visual restriction (blindfold) (n=46) or no visual restriction (control) (n=47) treatments. Behavioral responses to treatment were quantified by measuring the amount of movement and recording the number of vocalizations while the calves were restrained for 1 min on a calf tilt table. Movement was recorded by an electronic device attached to a weighing platform that held the tilt table. After 30 s of restraint, one experimenter touched the animal’s ear while the other touched the neck, to simulate ear tagging and vaccination. Blindfolded calves moved 44% less than the control group (P<0.01). However, the number of vocalizations that occurred during the 1-min test period did not differ (P>0.05) between treatments. Overall, blindfolding cattle reduced the amount of struggle and tended to lower heart rate. Therefore, blindfolding may be advantageous during the routine invasive procedures commonly performed on cattle.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the regulation of water balance and dry matter (DM) intake of male Ethiopian Somali goats. Twenty-eight goats were grouped into four treatments; goats watered every day (W1), every 2nd day (W2), every 3rd day (W3) and every 4th day (W4) for a total period of 72 days. Plasma sodium and potassium were analyzed by flame photometry, plasma osmolality by freezing point depression, plasma protein concentration by TS refractometry, and the plasma vasopressin concentration by radioimmunoassay. Goats were fed grass hay ad libitum and were given 200 g of concentrates daily. The calculated daily water intake (ml/kg BW0.75) of W1, W2, W3 and W4 was 128 ± 4, 86 ± 4, 88 ± 4 and 78 ± 4, respectively, (P < 0.001, W1 versus the other groups). Calculated total concentrates intake did not change, whereas Group W2 and W4 consumed less hay on days of water deprivation (W1 versus W2, P < 0.01; W1 versus W4, P < 0.001). Plasma sodium concentration of W1 was 143 ± 1 mmol/l. Intermittent watering increased plasma sodium concentration from 140 or 141 ± 1 mmol/l to 145 or 146 ± 1 mmol/l every 2nd day in group W2. In W3, it increased from 139 ± 1 to 146 ± 1 mmol/l and in W4 from 137 ± 1 to 149 ± 1 mmol/l (P < 0.001 for all) on days after watering compared to last day of water deprivation, respectively. Corresponding changes were observed in plasma osmolality. Total plasma protein concentration increased only in W3 from 65 ± 1 to 67 ± 1 mmol/l on day 3 (P < 0.01) and in W4 from 65 ± 1 to 67 and 68 ± 1 mmol/l on days 3 and 4, respectively (P < 0.05). The plasma vasopressin concentration of W1 was close to 0.80 ± 0.28 pmol/l on all days, but it increased on dehydration days in W2 (P < 0.05). In W3, the vasopressin concentration increased from 0.95 or 1.19 pmol/l the day after watering to 3.11 ± 0.28 pmol/l on day 3 (P < 0.01). In W4, it was 0.82 ± 0.31 pmol/l the day after watering and reached 6.06 ± 0.31 pmol/l on day 4 (P < 0.001). We conclude that male Ethiopian Somali goats can be watered once every 3rd days, and that longer interval is not recommended because it demands marked mobilization of water saving mechanisms and causes decreased DM intake.  相似文献

We estimated the effect of estrus synchronization on reproduction, production and economic outcomes in 272 beef heifers randomly allocated to a synchronized Test group or an unsynchronized Control group. The Test group received AI upon estrus detection for 6 days followed by PGF2 treatment of heifers that had not shown estrus by day 6 (PGF/6). In both groups AI was continued for 50 days, followed by a 42-day bull breeding period. Heifers were followed through their second breeding season and until they had weaned their first calves. Synchronization resulted in a reduction in median days to first insemination (8 vs. 11 in the Test and Control groups, respectively, P < 0.01) and median days to calving of calves born to AI (14 vs. 20, P = 0.04). There was no significant difference in pregnancy rate to the AI period (60.0% vs. 51.8%, P = 0.18), final pregnancy rate (82.2% vs. 83.2%, P = 0.87) or pregnancy rate to the subsequent breeding season (96.0% vs. 95.0%, P = 1.00). Although mean calf weaning mass was not significantly different (207.0 kg vs. 201.4 kg, P = 0.32), the total mass of calves weaned in this study was 14,843 kg vs. 13,060 kg and the benefit: cost ratio for synchronization was 2.8. It was therefore concluded that a PGF/6 protocol may affect the total mass of calves weaned by changing days to calving, weaning rate, the ratio of male: female calves born and/or the birth mass of calves.  相似文献

The effects of live Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CNCM I-1077) supplementation to 72 Saanen dairy goats in early lactation were investigated. Animals were divided into treatment and control groups balanced for parity and milk production in the first 3 weeks of lactation. Treated animals received 0.2 g/day yeast supplement (Levucell SC20) corresponding to 4 × 109 cfu/day S. cerevisiae, beginning week 3 of lactation, and lasting 15 weeks. Dry matter intake (DMI), body condition score (BCS), milk production and composition were recorded to day126 postpartum. Milk samples were analysed weekly for fat, protein, lactose, urea and SCC. Blood samples were analysed monthly for glucose, BHBA, NEFA, GOT and GGT. Intestinal microflora were assessed monthly in faeces, assaying total bacteria, enterobacteria, E. coli, coliform bacteria, clostridia, lactobacilli, molds and yeast. BCS was not affected by the treatment, but treated animals had greater DMI (2.71 kg/day versus 2.35 kg/day, S.E. ±0.12, P < 0.001) and produced more (P < 0.05) milk (2.38 kg/day versus 2.08 kg/day, S.E. ±0.14) of lower fat content (P < 0.05). Plasma metabolites and liver enzymes (GOT, GGT) were similar between groups, although BHBA levels tended to be lower (P = 0.06) in treated animals. Faecal E. coli were reduced (0.72 log10 cfu/g versus 2.39 log10 cfu/g, S.E. ±0.38, P < 0.05) and lactobacilli increased (P < 0.05) by the treatment. Yeast faecal levels were higher (P < 0.001) in treated animals during supplementation. In this study, live yeast supplementation to early lactating dairy goats significantly increased milk production, in relation to increased DMI, without decreasing BCS. Plasma metabolites (glucose, BHBA and NEFA) were consistent with the BCS findings (no differences between groups) and in addition there was a significant reduction of faecal E. coli content together with increase in lactobacilli in the treated animals, suggesting greater stability of the intestinal ecosystem. Results suggest that the inclusion of Saccharomyces cerevisae in the diet of early lactating dairy goats can be recommended under field conditions.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate diet selection and eating behaviour of lactating German Fawn × Hair Crossbred goats in different feeding methods and levels. Twenty German Fawn × Hair first backcross does (B1) were allocated into 4 treatment groups (2 feeding methods single (TMR) and choice feeding × 2 feeding levels ad libitum and restricted) with 5 replicates. Restricted feeding was applied only 4 h feed allocation during day. Barley, corn, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, wheat bran and alfalfa hay were feed ingredients for single and choice feeding. Eating patterns, milk yield and composition were determined for 8 weeks. The following results were obtained: (1) the meal criteria for goats restricted single and choice-fed, ad libitum single and choice-fed were determined as 1.00 and 0.63, 12.88 and 10.23 min, respectively. (2) Ad libitum feeding increased meal size, meal length, intermeal interval, total eating duration and decreased eating rate and meal number, compared to restricted feeding (P < 0.01). Choice feeding decreased meal size (P < 0.05), meal length (P < 0.01) and increased eating rate and meal number (P < 0.01), compared to single feeding. Restricted fed goats decreased intermeal interval in single feeding compared to choice feeding (P < 0.01), but increased meal number in choice feeding (P < 0.01). (3) Ad libitum choice-fed does made a diet containing 12.79% corn, 35.41% barley, 13.21% wheat bran, 5.35% soybean meal, 1.28% corn gluten meal and 29.80% alfalfa meal while restricted choice-fed does made a diet having more corn (27.69%), corn gluten meal (5.62%) and wheat bran (16.17%) and less barley (14.37%) and soybean meal (4.51%). (4) Choice feeding decreased RUP intake (P < 0.05) without affecting milk protein, irrespective to feeding levels, while having a tendency to increase in milk yield (14.2%) and 4% FCM (8.8%). (5) Restricted feeding decreased DM, ME, ADF and NDF intakes (P < 0.05) with concomitant decreases in 4% FCM, total milk solid, ash and fat compositions (P < 0.05), irrespective to feeding methods. (6) Choice-fed goats changed their preferences for a possible synchronized nutrient intake during a daytime, as sorted barley, soybean meal and alfalfa hay from early morning to late afternoon. It could be concluded that choice-fed goats have the ability to make their diet to meet nutrient requirements and had a tendency to increase in milk yield. Restriction in feeding time resulted in lower feed intake and milk yield, although the animal changed their feed preference in favour of high quality ingredients and eating pattern with lower meal criterion and intermeal interval.  相似文献

Lama guanicoe guanicoe is the guanaco subspecies located in the Argentinean Patagonia. It is of particular interest to characterize these populations as it is a native species and a high quality fibre production genetical resource. With the aim of describing phenotipically Lama guanicoe guanicoe populations, 262 specimens were sampled. The animals came from four different ecological regions, both wild and bred in captivity, from 5 ranches. Three age classes were established: calves (0–1 year), yearlings (1–2 years) and adults (more than 2 years). Morphometric variables measured were: body length (BL), thoracic depth (TD), half thoracic perimeter (HTP), head length (HL), shin length (ShL) and metacarpal circumference (MC). Fleece samples were evaluated on two ranches (n = 115) for: fleece total weight (FTW) and mean diameter of down (MDFD). Relationships between variables were studied and differences between morphostructures considering sex, age and ranch were analyzed. Age was the most important differencing factor (p < 0.05) for all morphometric traits (except for the ShL between yearlings and adults). Calves had finer MDFD (14.2 ± 0.6 μm) and less FTW (159 ± 47 g) than yearlings (15 ± 5.8 μm and 254 ± 57 g). Sexual dimorphism was not found in calves nor in yearlings for any of the morphometric characters considered. Adult females presented greater significant values (p < 0.05) for TD (42.7 ± 2.1 cm) and HTP (55.4 ± 3.2 cm) than males (41.6 ± 2.3 cm and 53 ± 2.9 cm, respectively). Only calf males presented higher significant values than females for the FTW (169 ± 42 g and 147 ± 51 g, respectively). FTW and MDFD were positively correlated between them (0.42) and with the thoracic measures (TD and HTP), these data imply an inverse relationship between quality and quantity of the fleece and suggest that the thoracic variables are good indicators of the fleece animal production in these Patagonian populations.  相似文献

Thirty-two F1 Boer × Spanish (28.7 ± 0.49 kg) and 40 3/4 Boer–1/4 Spanish (31.9 ± 0.47 kg) wethers, approximately 5 months of age, were used to compare feeding systems with different dietary treatments. Feeding systems were Calan gates and automated feeding units allowing one animal to consume feed at a time. Two diets included concentrate (C) and two were dehydrated alfalfa (A), fed pelletized (P) or loose (L). The main effect of feeding method was not significant for any variable. There was an interaction in DM intake (DMI) involving feeding method, diet, and genotype, which indicated that with a concentrate diet, regardless of physical form, DMI was not influenced by feeding method. Main effect dietary treatment means (1.78, 1.67, 2.04, and 1.70 kg for C-P, C-L, A-P, and A-L, respectively; S.E. = 0.030) indicated that pelletizing had a slightly greater effect on DMI with A versus C. ADG was lowest among treatments for A-L (212, 205, 190, and 157 g for C-P, C-L, A-P, and A-L, respectively; S.E. = 8.9), and ADG:DMI was greater for C versus A (127, 120, 94, and 94 g/kg for C-P, C-L, A-P, and A-L, respectively; S.E. = 7.8). Both ADG and ADG:DMI were similar between genotypes. For wethers subjected to automated feeding units, the number of feeder visits was lowest among diets (P < 0.05) for C-P (23.1, 31.2, 35.7, and 35.7 per day; S.E. = 2.00); total feeder occupancy time per animal ranked (P < 0.05) C-P < A-P < C-L and A-L (74, 130, 105, and 122 min/day; S.E. = 6.8), and rate of DMI was greater for P than for L diets (24.6, 12.9, 22.0, and 13.7 g/min for C-P, C-L, A-P, and A-L, respectively; S.E. = 3.89). In summary, meat goats can markedly vary feeding behaviors in response to different diet types and forms; however, there appear limits to such changes, as exemplified by lowest ADG for A-L. Calan gates and automated feeding systems appear similar in the ability to compare growth performance with treatments such as the concentrate-containing diets and genotypes of this experiment. Pelletizing does not seem to affect growth performance with diets consisting of appreciable concentrate. Effects of pelletizing on growth performance of meat goats consuming forage diets may be attributable to change in level of feed intake, without impact on efficiency of feed utilization.  相似文献

High yielding dairy cows experience a negative energy balance (NEB) early post-partum and it was hypothesized that this may be aggravated under summer heat stress (HS) conditions. In this study, which was performed in Egypt, 20 Holstein cows were followed during summer (n = 10) and winter (n = 10) seasons. All cows were multiparous and kept at the same herd. Blood was sampled from each cow starting 1 week before the expected calving date and then at 1-week intervals until week 6 post-partum. From week 2 to 6 post-partum follicular fluid was collected through transvaginal follicular fluid aspiration at 6 days intervals. Ambient air temperature (AT) and relative humidity (RH) were recorded and temperature–humidity index (THI) was calculated as well. Respiration rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), and body condition score (BCS) were recorded for each cow at the time of blood sampling. Concentrations of glucose, insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), urea and total cholesterol (TC) were measured in each blood and follicular fluid sample. All the cows showed a significantly higher RR and RT in summer (95.5 ± 1.1 and 39.88 ± 0.06, respectively) than in winter (43.89 ± 0.61 and 38.94 ± 0.07, respectively) (P < 0.001). Body condition score loss during the early post-partum period was higher in summer than in winter (1.1 ± 0.07 vs. 0.85 ± 0.06 point, respectively) (P < 0.001). The average dominant follicle diameter was significantly lower in summer than in winter during the period of negative energy balance (11.6 ± 0.7 mm vs. 15.3 ± 1.2 mm, respectively) (P < 0.01). Under summer heat stress, the concentrations of glucose (2.98 ± 0.07 and 2.19 ± 0.04 mmol/L), IGF-1 (106.7 ± 2.9 and 99.0 ± 3.4 ng/ml) and TC (137.3 ± 5.3 and 62.2 ± 5.1 mg/dl) in blood and FF, respectively, were significantly lower than winter concentrations by (0.17 ± 0.03 mmol/L, P < 0.001 and 0.26 ± 0.06 mmol/L, P < 0.001), (12.3 ± 3.6 ng/ml, P < 0.001 and 9.0 ± 2.7 ng/ml, P < 0.001) and (20.7 ± 1.8 mg/dl, P < 0.001 and 7.3 ± 1.1 mg/dl, P < 0.01), respectively. However, the concentrations of NEFA (0.68 ± 0.14 and 0.22 ± 0.02 mmol/L) and urea (9.27 ± 0.34 and 9.96 ± 0.25 mmol/L) in blood and FF, respectively, were significantly higher in summer compared to winter (0.50 ± 0.08 mmol/L, P < 0.001 and 0.20 ± 0.02 mmol/L, P < 0.001) and (8.77 ± 0.23 mmol/L, P < 0.05 and 8.96 ± 0.29 mmol/L, P < 0.001), respectively, throughout the experimental period. The results of the present study indicate that heat stress early post-partum aggravates NEB in high yielding dairy cows, reduces BCS, dominant follicle diameter and alters the biochemical concentrations in the follicular fluid of the dominant follicle which may result in inferior oocyte and granulosa cell quality and hence poorer fertility.  相似文献
