Calcium (Ca) supplements may be used to normalize Ca-balance changes but little is known about the effect of Ca supplements
on Ca balance during hypokinesia (decreased kilometers per day). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of daily
intakes of Ca supplements on Ca balance during hypokinesia (HK).
Studies were done during 30 d of a pre-HK period and during 364 d of a HK period. Forty male athletes aged 23–26 yr were chosen
as subjects. They were divided equally into four groups: unsupplemented ambulatory control subjects (UACS), unsupplemented
hypokinetic subjects (UHKS), supplemented hypokinetic subjects (SHKS), and supplemented ambulatory control subjects (SACS).
The SHKS and UHKS groups were kept under an average running distance of 0.7 km/d. In the SHKS and SACS groups supplemented
with 35.0 mg Ca lactate/kg body weight.
Fecal Ca loss, urinary excretion of Ca and phosphate (P), serum concentrations of ionized calcium (CaI) total Ca, P, and Ca balance, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) and 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D), anthropometric
characteristics and peak oxygen uptake were measured. Fecal Ca excretion, urinary Ca and P excretion, serum CaI, total Ca, and P concentration, and negative Ca balanced increased significantly (p ≤ 0.01) in the SHKS and UHKS groups when compared with the SACS and UACS groups. Serum, urinary, and fecal Ca changes were
much greater and appeared much faster in the SHKS group than in the UHKS group. Serum iPTH and 1,25 (OH)2 D, body weight,
and peak oxygen uptake decreased significantly (p ≤ 0.01) in the SHKS and UHKS groups when compared with the SACS and UACS groups. In contrast, the corresponding parameters
remained stable in the SACS and UACS groups when compared with the baseline control values.
It was concluded that during prolonged HK, urinary and fecal Ca excretion and serum Ca concentration increased significantly
despite the presence of a negative Ca balance; thus, Ca supplements cannot be used to normalize negative Ca balance during

Radioimmunoassays were employed to study variation in the concentration of corticosterone, ACTH and beta-endorphin in rat blood plasma at different times of the 30-hour immobilization and under the effect of a short-term action of ecologically significant negative stimulation emanating from other animals. Both prolonged immobilization stress and short-term emotional reaction produced appreciable alterations in the blood plasma content of all the hormones under study. The findings indicate that variations in the corticosterone and beta-endorphin levels were in the best agreement. 相似文献

Diuresis and water intake was determined in 20 male albino rats during 8 weeks of immobilization and in 10 rats in post-immobilization
recovery phase. Increase of diuresis and water intake during the immobilization period have been observed. Neither changes
in sodium and potassium excretion nor in Na/K ratio were found. As the immobilization of the rats did not cause any changes
of their natural body position in relation to the direction of gravity forces, the effect of immobilization on diuresis and
water intake could not be related to an ortostatic shift of blood or inhibition of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal antidiuretic

Significant hypoalgesia (tail-flick reflex at 60 degrees C) was observed in rats during the whole period of 24-hour immobilization in cramped cages, as compared to food-and-water deprived and control animals. This hypoalgesia was not antagonized by naloxone (1 mg/kg), however, the animals periodically receiving the drug during immobilization revealed aggressiveness and significant hypoalgesia after immobilization was discontinued (30-120 min observation). 相似文献

This study was designed to study xanthine oxidase (XO) and xanthine dehydrogenase (XD) activity in the lung of rats exposed to prolonged restraining immobilization stress. Immobilization caused more than twofold increase of xanthine oxidase activity in the rat lung. The activity of xanthine oxidase decreased in lung homogenates incubated at -20 degrees C for 24 h. The same incubation of homogenates from control rats caused a non-significant increase of the activity. No measurable NAD(+)-dependent xanthine dehydrogenase activity could be established in the lungs of both control rats and rats subjected to immobilization. All rats revealed methylene blue-dependent xanthine dehydrogenase activity which was more than two-times higher in the immobilized animals. Incubation at -20 degrees C for 24 h increased the methylene blue-dependent xanthine dehydrogenase activity in homogenates from control rats and decreased the enzyme activity in homogenates from immobilized rats. A working hypothesis was proposed for the sequence of events explaining the results obtained: XO-catalyzed generation of activated oxygen species may take place in the initiation of lipid peroxidation in the lung of rats immobilized for prolonged periods of time. 相似文献

In oxygenic photosynthesis, PSII carries out the oxidation of water and reduction of plastoquinone. The product of water oxidation is molecular oxygen. The water splitting complex is located on the lumenal side of the PSII reaction center and contains manganese, calcium, and chloride. Four sequential photooxidation reactions are required to generate oxygen from water; the five sequentially oxidized forms of the water splitting complex are known as the Sn states, where n refers to the number of oxidizing equivalents stored. Calcium plays a role in water oxidation; removal of calcium is associated with an inhibition of the S state cycle. Although calcium can be replaced by other cations in vitro, only strontium maintains activity, and the steady-state rate of oxygen evolution is decreased in strontium-reconstituted PSII. In this article, we study the role of calcium in PSII that is limited in water content. We report that strontium substitution or 18OH2 exchange causes conformational changes in the calcium ligation shell. The conformational change is detected because of a perturbation to calcium ligation during the S1 to S2 and S2 to S3 transition under water-limited conditions. 相似文献

Calcium is known to play an important role in the regulation of cellular processes as a secondary messenger in signal transduction to a specific response in all eucaryotic cells. Its messenger role is realized by transient changes in the Ca2+ cytosolic concentration induced by variety of external stimuli such as light, hormones and gravity. Recent findings claim the modifications in a calcium balance in plant cells in microgravity and under clinorotation reproducing partially the microgravity effect. Based on these data, the hypothesis is proposed that Ca2+ level changes can trigger the rearrangements in cell metabolism occurring in the conditions of altered gravity. However, the methods used in previous works permit only to determine the relative quantity of intracellular membrane-bound calcium and to observe the localization of free Ca2+. Therefore, it is of essential interest to measure the concentration of free calcium ions ([Ca2+]i) in plant cells under the influence of altered gravity. In this paper results from measurements of the [Ca2+]i in plant cells under clinorotation will be reviewed and discussed in an effort to examine their effectiveness, causes and consequences. 相似文献

Morphological and functional alterations in astrocytic glia are often found in epileptic syndromes, although the exact role of astrocytes in epilepsy is poorly understood. During calcium imaging of epileptiform events in juvenile neocortical slices we previously discovered cells with spontaneous oscillations in their intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i). We have now characterized these oscillations using two in vitro models of epilepsy and find that they are produced by astrocytes. Astrocytic oscillations are widespread throughout the imaged territories, are remarkably regular and have long periods, averaging 100 s, which become shorter during development. Astrocytic oscillations are uncorrelated among themselves and with epileptiform events, are blocked by internal release antagonists and are stimulated by caffeine. Astrocytic calcium oscillations could mediate reactive astrogliosis, contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic epileptic syndromes, and be used as a diagnostic test for epileptic tissue. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. At a free Mg2+ concentration of 1.0 mM, myosin binds one Ca2+ per molecule when the Ca2+ concentration is 20 μM, a value in the concentration range expected during contraction of skeletal muscle. Mg2+ alters Ca2+ binding in a complex manner, not by simple competition. In the range from 20 to 100 μM Mg2+ it produces positive cooperativity between the high-affinity Ca2+ binding sites, in addition to shifting binding to higher Ca2+ concentrations. High-affinity Ca2+ binding is not significantly affected by the addition of ATP, increase in ionic strength to 0.1 and changes in temperature. Ca2+ binding did not increase actin-activated ATPase activity in the absence of regulatory proteins, but rather inhibited it. 相似文献

Two main components of plant energy balance are analyzed--photosynthesis and dark respiration. Different plant species, growing in optimal conditions and differing in photosynthetic metabolism, productivity and potential resistance to stress, have constant ratio between total dark respiration and grossphotosynthesis. The ratio about 38-40% at the phase of active growth. This value reflect plant state, when income (assimilation) is maximized, and expense (total oxidation) is minimized. Intensities of dark respiration of plants in darkness and light are similar despite the fact that the plants have considerable differences: 1) different carbon sources--young assimilates in light and reserve ones in the dark; 2) biochemical modifications (or inhibition) of some stages of dark respiration in light; 3) intensification of alternative respiration in unfavourable conditions differing in dark and light variants. Ratio between intensity of dark respiration and photosynthesis increases in plants growing in unfavourable conditions. This increase is more considerable in plants that are less resistant to the given stress. Characters of energy balance can be used for estimation of physiological status of plants, prediction of resistance and potential productivity at seedling stage. 相似文献

Competition for available water resources in both arid and semi-arid locations has led to greater scrutiny of turfgrass irrigation. Irrigation management strategies, including deficit irrigation, need further investigation. The objective of this research was to determine the physiological response of bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) to prolonged water deficits under saline conditions. Bermudagrass was grown in large columns packed with three different soil types (sandy loam, silt loam and clay). Synthesized saline irrigation water was applied at three different salinity levels (1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 dS/m). Two previous experiments that were conducted with these columns over a 3.5 year period led to differential profile salinization in all 27 columns. At the end of this 3.5 year period, all irrigations were terminated and plant growth and water status were monitored over a 95 day dry-down period. Midday stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, canopy temperature, soil water in storage and stolon elongation were measured over the experimental period. On day 95, above ground tissue was harvested for dry weight and elemental tissue analysis. Midday stomatal conductance decreased around day 30 in all columns regardless of soil salinity. This decrease was not associated with a threshold leaf water potential, as midday leaf water potentials remained constant over a 60 day period. Stolon elongation also ceased before any deviation in the midday leaf water potential occurred. A concomitant reduction in evapo ranspiration was not associated with the measured decrease in stomatal conductance. This would suggest that bermudagrass may have regulated stomatal activity to compensate for lower conductances during periods of greater stress and/or that measured midday stomatal conductances cannot always be directly coupled to extended time evapotranspiration measurements. 相似文献

The authors carried out a comparative histological and electron microscopic study of the bioprosthesis of the umbilical vein (Biograft manufactured by Meadox) and bioprosthesis obtained according to the method by M. I. Kuzin and coworkers. A far greater preservation of the new bioprosthesis was observed at long-term periods both at the histological and ultrastructural levels. Some morphological phenomena reflecting the time course of the vessel graft rearrangement were delineated 18 to 24 months after transplantation, particularly the development of "collateral" vessels in the perivenous space. The suggestion was made about an important role of Wharton's substance in the formation of the vessels. 相似文献

Contractile properties of slow-twitch soleus (SOL), fast-twitch extensor digitorum longus (EDL), and fast-twitch superficial region of the vastus lateralis were determined in vitro (22 degrees C) in rats remobilized after prolonged (3 mo) hindlimb immobilization (IM). For all muscles the muscle-to-body weight ratio was significantly depressed by IM, and the ratios failed to completely recover even after 90 days. The contractile properties of the fast-twitch muscles were less affected by IM than the slow-twitch SOL. The IM shortened the SOL isometric twitch duration due to a reduced contraction and half-relaxation time. These parameters returned to control levels by the 14th day of recovery. Peak tetanic tension (Po, g/cm2) declined with IM by 46% in the SOL but showed no significant change in the fast-twitch muscles. After IM the SOL Po (g/cm2) recovered to control values by 28 days. The recovery of Po in absolute units (g) was considerably slower and did not return to control levels until 60 (SOL) to 90 (EDL) days. The maximum shortening velocity was not altered by IM in any of the muscles studied. These results demonstrate that both fast- and slow-twitch skeletal muscles possess the ability to completely recover normal contractile function following prolonged periods of hindlimb IM. 相似文献
