Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae) is a weed of great significance in Australia and worldwide, but little is known about connections among components of its life history. We document over a 3-year period, the links between L. camara seed-bank dynamics and its above-ground growth, including size asymmetry in four land-use types (a farm, a hoop pine plantation and two open eucalypt forests) invaded by the weed near Brisbane, Queensland Australia. Seed-bank populations varied appreciably across sites and in response to rainfall and control measures, and they were higher (~1,000 seeds/m2) when annual rainfall was 15–30 % below the long-term yearly average. Fire reduced seed-bank populations but not the proportion germinating (6–8 %). Nearly a quarter of fresh seeds remain germinable after 3 years of soil burial. For small seedlings (<10 cm high), the expected trade-offs in two life-history traits—survival and growth—did not apply; rather the observed positive association between these two traits, coupled with a persistent seed-bank population could contribute to the invasiveness of the plant. Relationships between absolute growth rate and initial plant size (crown volume) were positively linear, suggesting that most populations are still at varying stages of the exponential phase of the sigmoid growth; this trend also suggests that at most sites and despite increasing stand density and limiting environmental resources of light and soil moisture, lantana growth is inversely size asymmetric. From the observed changes in measures of plant size inequality, asymmetric competition appeared limited in all the infestations surveyed.  相似文献

As with many invasive plant species, little is known of the population spatial patterns and stand dynamics of Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae)??a thicket-forming weed of worldwide significance in managed and conservation lands, including coastal and inland habitats of Eastern Australia. Consequently, we mapped and followed annually for 3?years the demographic fate of more than 2000 Lantana individuals at sites with four land-uses (hoop pine plantation, cattle farm, and two eucalyptus forests with occasional grazing and periodic burning regime, respectively) in Queensland, SE Australia. Populations exhibited plant size distributions that were continuous (i.e., of L or symmetric type) and unimodal, except the farm population where bimodality was observed. Newly established plants could be reproductive within one growing season at ~50?cm in height, especially where environmental resources were not limiting. Density had an appreciable effect on the weed??s reproductive capacity and growth, but not on survival. Established and newly recruited individuals were aggregated but the degree of aggregation decreased with plant size. However, in the sites that had experienced burning or mechanical clearing, Lantana seedling/juvenile recruitment assumed negative association (spatial displacement) in relation to established individuals. The findings of this study agree with the notion that ecological processes often leave characteristic spatial signatures, which if interpreted using appropriate hypotheses can help to ascertain factors responsible for the observed spatial patterns and stand dynamics.  相似文献

Previous short-term studies predict that the use of fire to manage lantana (Lantana camara) may promote its abundance. We tested this prediction by examining long-term recruitment patterns of lantana in a dry eucalypt forest in Australia from 1959 to 2007 in three fire frequency treatments: repeated annual burning, repeated triennial burning and long unburnt. The dataset was divided into two periods (1959–1972, 1974–2007) due to logging that occurred at the study site between 1972 and 1974 and the establishment of the triennial burn treatment in 1973. Our results showed that repeated burning decreased lantana regeneration under an annual burn regime in the pre- and post-logging periods and maintained low levels of regeneration in the triennial burn compartment during the post-logging period. In the absence of fire, lantana recruitment exhibited a dome-shaped response over time, with the total population peaking in 1982 before declining to 2007. In addition to fire regime, soil pH and carbon to nitrogen ratio, the density of taller conspecifics and the interaction between rainfall and fire regime were found to influence lantana regeneration change over time. The results suggest that the reported positive association between fire disturbance and abundance of lantana does not hold for all forest types and that fire should be considered as part of an integrated weed management strategy for lantana in more fire-tolerant ecosystems.  相似文献

Weather is a general stochastic influence on the life history of weeds. In contrast, anthropogenic disturbance (e.g. land use) is an important deterministic influence on weed demography. Our aim with this study was to investigate the relative contributions of land use and weather on the demography of Lantana camara (lantana), a weed of agricultural and natural habitats, based on the intensive monitoring of lantana populations under three land uses (viz. farm[pasture], and burnt and grazed forests) in subtropical Australia. Lantana populations were growing vigorously across all land uses (asymptotic population growth rate, λ > 3). Examination of historical demography using retrospective perturbation analyses showed that weather was a strong influence on lantana demography with the transition from an El Niño (2008–09) to a La Niña (2009–10) year having a strong positive effect on population growth rate. This effect was most marked at the grazed site, and to a lesser extent at the burnt site, with seedling-to-juvenile and juvenile-to-adult transitions contributing most to these effects. This is likely the result of burning and grazing having eliminated/reduced interspecific competition at these sites. Prospective perturbation analyses revealed that λ was most sensitive to proportionate changes in growth transitions, followed by fecundity and survival transitions. Examination of context-specific patterns in elasticity revealed that growth and fecundity transitions are likely to be the more critical vital rates to reduce λ in wet years at the burnt and grazed forest sites, compared to the farm/pasture site. Management of lantana may need to limit the transition of juveniles into the adult stages, especially in sites where lantana is free from competition (e.g. in the presence of fire or grazing), and this particularly needs to be achieved in wet years. Collectively, these results shed light on aspects of spatial and temporal variation in the demography of lantana, and offer insights on its context-specific management.  相似文献

The role of humans in historic fire regimes has received little quantitative attention. Here, we address this inadequacy by developing a fire history in northeastern Oklahoma on lands once occupied by the Cherokee Nation. A fire event chronology was reconstructed from 324 tree-ring dated fire scars occurring on 49 shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) remnant trees. Fire event data were examined with the objective of determining the relative roles of humans and climate over the last four centuries. Variability in the fire regime appeared to be significantly influenced by human population density, culture, and drought. The mean fire interval (MFI) within the 1.2 km2 study area was 7.5 years from 1633 to 1731 and 2.8 years from 1732 to 1840. Population density of Native American groups including Cherokee was significantly correlated (r?=?0.84) with the number of fires per decade between 1680 and 1880. Coincident with the Removal of the Cherokee and other native peoples from the eastern United States and immigrations into northeast Oklahoma, the MFI decreased to 1.8 years. After 1925 fire intervals were considerably lengthened (MFI?=?16 years) due to fire suppression and decreased fire use until the recent prescribed burning by The Nature Conservancy. Many of the historic fire years that were previously shown to be synchronous across Missouri and Arkansas during drought years were also fire years at this site. Overall the frequency of fires was weakly associated with drought compared to human population density.  相似文献

Aims

Plantation forests are often assumed to have reduced biodiversity relative to unmanaged forests. However, existing knowledge is based on studies of rotation-aged tree crops. We investigated how Eucalyptus afforestation of agricultural land affected plant species composition and biodiversity across a range of plantation ages (1–10 years). We also studied whether the soil seed bank could contribute to regeneration of existing vegetation in such plantations.

Methods

We used a chronosequence approach to evaluate plant and seed species composition and diversity in forests and soil seed banks. We also quantified the similarity of seed banks and aboveground vegetation within plantation sites of a given age. Plantation sites were also compared to a nearby, mature pine forest.

Results

Total plant species number, density and diversity in Eucalyptus grandis plantations increased for the first 3 years plantation establishment, then stabilized or decreased for the next 1–2 years and then increase significantly over the following years. Species number and density in soil seed bank increased significantly with plantation age only after an initial 6-year decrease. Shannon–Wiener index of total species diversity did not significantly differ with plantation age. The understory vegetation and soil seed bank were dominated by pioneer species in the first 3 years, but intermediate-successional and shade-tolerant species gradually invaded as plantations developed further. After 7 years, E. grandis plantation understories were composed of mainly shade-tolerant species. Nevertheless, the diversity of the diversity of intermediate-successional in soil seed banks were higher than that of shade-tolerant species in soil seed banks at this age range (7–10 year). Among species successfully germinated from soil seed banks, 48 % were not found in the aboveground plant community. Similarities between the species in the soil seed bank and the aboveground vegetation were low for both plantation and control forests and did not significantly change with plantation ages.

Conclusions

E. grandis likely produces a changing microclimate during plantation development, which in turn drives composition and diversity dynamics in understory vegetation and soil seed banks after the afforestation of agricultural land. The first 4 years after plantation establishment is associated with lower plant and soil seed bank diversity, meriting a greater focus on biodiversity stabilization and possibly longer rotation periods.  相似文献

Hybrids between shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata Mill.) and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) have increased since the 1950s throughout the southeastern USA. Previously, greater sprouting capacity and the formation of a basal crook that lowers the height of dormant buds may have favored pure shortleaf pine populations on fire prone sites. The objective of this study was to determine how seasonal timing of topkill by both fire and topclipping affect sprouting of shortleaf × loblolly pine F1 hybrids compared to their parent open-pollinated populations during their third growing season. A factorial combination of top-clipping (hand pruners) and girdling by fire (propane torch) was conducted on November 2010, January, March, and April 2011 and sprouting response was measured after the growing season. Survival of topkilled shortleaf pine (94 %) was greatest followed by hybrid (78 %) and loblolly pine (35 %). However, species effects varied with topkill treatment and treatment date because survival was relatively lower for loblolly and hybrid pines in the burn-only as well as the November and April treatment dates while survival of shortleaf pine was consistently high. The number of sprouts was greatest for shortleaf (32.3) intermediate for hybrid (23.8) and lowest for loblolly pine (12.0). Overall, 83 % of shortleaf pine, 35 % of hybrid pine, and 5 % of loblolly pine exhibited a basal crook. The height from ground line to the lowest sprout was shortest for shortleaf (3.5 mm), intermediate for hybrids (7.7 mm), and largest for loblolly pine (21.3 mm). While the hybrid saplings exhibited intermediate performance in survival, sprouting capacity, and crooking, pure shortleaf pine were superior and are probably better suited to recover from fire.  相似文献

The study of foraging behaviour of butterflies has been an important focus among the lepidopterists for years. Although established as invasive weed plant, the role Lantana camara as an important host plant as well as a food plant for the butterfly species is now well-known. The present study aims to interpret the role of morphological variables of the visitor butterflies in relation to their foraging behaviour on Lantana camara. Butterflies with longer proboscis were more efficient in foraging on flowers of Lantana camara than the butterflies with shorter ones, when the species containing proboscis same as or longer than their body length were excluded. Longer relative proboscis length (RPL) have selective advantage for foraging over Lantana camara up to a certain point (RPL = 0.881) and after that larger relative proboscis length often obstructs foraging behaviour as the handling time increases and these butterflies face more resistance against incoming nectar than the others. The residuals (body weight-wing span) also act as important factor. The handling time of the butterflies on Lantana camara shows a negative relationship with the residuals. The findings suggests that in case of Lantana camara as a nectaring plant butterfly species with longer proboscis have selective advantage for exploitation of the resource than the species with shorter ones and plantation of Lantana camara may be useful for conserving the long tongued butterfly species.  相似文献

A biotype of the flower-galling mite, Aceria lantanae (Cook) (Trombidiformes: Eriophyidae) collected in Florida (U.S.A.) was released in South Africa in 2007 against Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae) but has displayed patchy establishment. The occurrence of different L. camara varieties and their susceptibility to A. lantanae were assessed across four provinces with dense infestations. Surveys were undertaken at 113 sites during the mite’s peak infestation period (April–May) in 2013–2015. The occurrence of 13 recorded L. camara varieties differed substantially across and within these provinces. Overall, five varieties accounted for 7–45% of the sampled plants at 9–51% of the surveyed sites. The remaining eight varieties accounted for <1–4% of the plants at 2–9% of the sites. The establishment and impact of A. lantanae differed significantly between L. camara varieties. The mite established best on three varieties (163 LP, 021 WP and 015 OR), with 60–90% of plants infested. Reduced establishments were observed on seven varieties, with 18–50% of plants infested, while no establishment was recorded on three varieties. Where established, A. lantanae inflicted considerable levels of damage (i.e. 51–75% of buds infested) on the most widespread and abundant L. camara variety (163 LP) and on one less common variety (021 WP). Two uncommon varieties (015 OR, 021 P) suffered moderate levels of damage with the remainder suffering only trivial levels. The mite’s impact in South Africa could be improved by complementing the established biotype with others from Central and South America that are better matched with the poorly attacked L. camara varieties.  相似文献

The invasive species Eupatorium adenophorum is known to influence stand structure and wildfire the hazard in forests. In the current work, we quantitatively examined fire effects in invaded and uninvaded plots in southwestern Sichuan Province, China, with five different forest sites that had different types of dominant species: Pinus yunnanensis, P. yunnanensisQuercus spp., Keteleeria fortunei, K. fortuneiQuercus spp., and Eucalyptus robusta. We compared the fuel chemistry (moisture, ash, heat value, and ignition point) and fire severity (flame length, fire intensity) under three burning conditions between the invaded and uninvaded plots in each forest sites, and then analyzed the results using multivariate response permutation procedures (MRPP). The burning conditions included: low (fine fuel moisture of 15 % and 5 km/h windspeed), moderate (fine fuel moisture of 10 % and 15 km/h windspeed), and extreme (fine fuel moisture of 5 % and 30 km/h windspeed). With all five sites, the fire severity and fuel loads were clearly significantly higher at the invaded sites. Fire severity was also intensified in the invaded coniferous sites compared to their mixed forest sites. These results indicate that biological invasions may increase the surface fire severity, perhaps through an increase in the heat value, and fuel loads, while reducing the moisture, ash, and ignition point of the understory herbaceous.  相似文献

In this short technical report, we present a fast and simple procedure for sample preparation and a single-run Reversed Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC) determination of seven indoles (indole-3-acetic acid, indole-3-acetamide, indole-3-acetonitrile, indole-3-ethanol, indole-3-lactic acid, tryptamine and tryptophan) in bacterial culture supernatants. The separation of the analytes, after a single centrifugal filtration clean-up step, was performed using a gradient elution on a symmetry C8 column followed by fluorimetric detection (λex = 280/λem = 350 nm). The calibration curves were linear for all of the studied compounds over the concentration range of 0.0625–125 μg mL?1 (r 2  ≥ 0.998) and the limits of detection were below 0.015 μg mL?1. The applicability of the method was confirmed by analysis of Pseudomonas putida culture supernatants.  相似文献

Radiotelemetry and unmarked occupancy modeling have been used to estimate animal population growth, but have not been compared for ungulates. We compared white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population growth estimates from radiomarked individuals and occupancy modeling of unmarked individuals and evaluated advantages and disadvantages of each method. Estimates of population growth were obtained using remote camera (N = 54/year) detection/non-detection occupancy surveys of unmarked deer and from survival and recruitment data of radiomarked adult females (N = 87) and neonate fawns (N = 127) in a predominantly forested region of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA, 2009–2011. We hypothesized that occupancy models and radiotelemetry data would have similar population growth trends because both methods sampled the same temporally closed population. Percent changes in camera trap data generally reflected finite population growth (λ) of radiomarked deer which increased (λ = 1.10 ± 0.01) from 2009 to 2010, but decreased (λ = 0.87 ± 0.02) from 2010 to 2011. Also, unmarked adult female abundance and fawn:adult female ratios generally reflected trends in radiomarked deer survival and recruitment. Royle–Nichols occupancy model abundance estimates had wide confidence intervals, which may preclude using this method from accurately estimating deer population growth. Radiotelemetry provided more precise population growth estimates, while allowing collection of vital rates and location data. However, the Royle–Nichols occupancy model may be preferred to radiotelemetry because it reflected yearly variation in population growth with reduced labor and no invasive marking. Researchers should consider the objectives and logistics of their study when choosing a specific method.  相似文献

Polymorphisms in the glutathione S-transferase superfamily genes that encodes enzymes involved in the phase II xenobiotic metabolism may lead head and neck cancer development. In this study we investigate the association of A313G and C341T GSTP1 polymorphisms, GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes in the head and neck cancer development, interactions between these polymorphisms, the tumor histopathologic parameters and risk factors (smoking and drinking) were also evaluated in the case–control study. 775 individuals (261 patients/514 controls) were included in the study. Molecular analyzes were performed by PCR and PCR–RFLP; and statistical analyzes by Chi square and multiple logistic regression. Chi square test showed that only the genotype frequencies for GSTM1 and GSTT1 were in Hardy–Weinberg disequilibrium in both groups. Significant results with p ≤ 0.05 showed that age ≥ 48 years (OR = 11.87; 7.55–18.65), smoking (OR = 4.25; 2.70–6.69), drinking (OR = 1.59; 1.02–2.46) were possible predictors for the head and neck cancer development and the presence of A313G GSTP1 polymorphism (OR = 0.62; 0.42–0.92) decreased the risk for this disease. Individuals with the 313AG/GG GSTP1 and age ≥ 48 years (OR = 0.59; 0.38–0.91), male gender (OR = 0.54; 0.35–0.83), smokers (OR = 0.63; 0.40–0.99) and drinkers (OR = 0.57; 0.35–0.95); the GSTM1 null genotype and age < 48 years (OR = 2.46; 1.09–5.55); the GSTT1 null genotype and primary anatomical sites of pharynx (OR = 0.37; 0.17–0.79) and larynx (OR = 3.60; 1.93–6.72), can modulate the risk for the disease development. The variables age ≥ 48 years, smoking and drinking can be predictors for head and neck cancer development; moreover, A313G GSTP1 polymorphism, GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes can modulate the risk for this disease.  相似文献

Present studies on the community characteristics of earthworms revealed the occurrence of 11 species of earthworms in the pineapple (Ananus comosus) and 14 species in the mixed fruit plantations of west Tripura (India). While 9 species of earthworms namely Drawida assamensis, Drawida papillifer papillifer, Drawida nepalensis, Kanchuria sp., Metaphire houlleti, Eutyphoeus gigas, Eutyphoeus scutarius, Eutyphoeus comillahnus and Pontoscolex corethrurus are of common occurrence to both the pineapple and the mixed fruit plantations, two and five earthworm species namely Kanchuria sumerianus, Eutyphoeus sp. and Metaphire posthuma, Perionyx excavatus, Lampito mauritii, Amynthus alexandri, Eutyphoeus gammiei are restricted to the pineapple and the mixed fruit plantations respectively. Earthworms were found mostly within 15 cm depth of soils having temperature 25–25.8 °C, moisture 18.8–22.4 %, water holding capacity 26–31.7 % and organic matter content 2.4–4.0 %. Mean earthworm densities (158 ind. m?2) was significantly higher (p < 0.01, t = 9.67) and biomass (36.67 g m?2) significantly lower (p < 0.01, t = ?5.98) in the pineapple plantation than the mixed fruit plantation (density 93 ind. m?2, biomass 56 g m?2). High density value of earthworms in pineapple plantation is linked with dominance of D. assamensis and high biomass value in mixed fruit plantation was due to the higher relative abundance of larger species like E. gigas, E. scutarius, E. comillahnus and E. gammiei. Compared to the mixed fruit plantation, significantly (p < 0.05) higher index of dominance, lower index of diversity, species richness index and species evenness were recorded in the pineapple plantation.  相似文献

Woody plant demographics provide important insight into ecosystem state-shifts in response to changing fire regimes. In Australian tropical savannas, the switch from patchy landscape burning by Aborigines to unmanaged wildfires within the past century has been implicated in biodiversity declines including the fire-sensitive conifer, Callitris intratropica. C. intratropica commonly forms small, closed-canopy groves that exclude fire and allow recruitment of conspecifics and other fire-sensitive woody plants. C. intratropica groves provide a useful indicator of heterogeneity and fire regime change, but the mechanisms driving the species’ persistence and decline remain poorly understood. We examined the hypothesis that C. intratropica population stability depends upon a regime of frequent, low-intensity fires maintained by Aboriginal management. We combined integral projection models of C. intratropica population behaviour with an environmental state change matrix to examine how vital rates, grove dynamics and the frequency of high- and low-intensity fires contribute to population stability. Closed-canopy C. intratropica groves contributed disproportionately to population growth by promoting recruitment, whereas singleton trees accounted for a larger proportion of adult mortality. Our patch-based population model predicted population declines under current fire frequencies and that the recruitment of new groves plays a critical role in the species’ persistence. Our results also indicated that reducing fire intensity, a key outcome of Aboriginal burning, leads to C. intratropica population persistence even at high fire frequencies. These findings provide insight into the relationship between ecosystem composition and human–fire interactions and the role of fire management in sustaining the mosaics that comprise ‘natural’ systems.  相似文献

Aims

This study aimed to determine the influence of different harvest residue management strategies on tree growth, soil carbon (C) concentrations, soil nitrogen (N) availability and ecosystem C stocks 15 years after replanting second rotation Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata), an important plantation species in subtropical China. Such information is needed for designing improved management strategies for reforestation programmes in subtropical environments aimed at mitigating CO2 emissions.

Methods

Four harvest residue management treatments including slash burning, whole tree, stem-only and double residue retention were applied to sixteen 20 m?×?30 m plots in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Tree growth was measured annually and soil properties were measured at 3 year intervals over a 15 year period after re-planting.

Results

Cumulative diameter growth at age 15 years was significantly smaller in the slash burning than the whole tree and double residue harvest treatments. Hot water extractable N concentrations increased with the increased organic residue retention levels and significant differences were observed between double residue and slash burning treatments. Harvest residue management had no significant effect on the soil C concentrations to 40 cm depth. ANOVA showed that harvest residue management had no significant effect on total biomass carbon at age 15, but the plantation ecosystem (soil C at 0–40 cm depth plus forest biomass C) had significantly lower C mass in the slash burning treatment compared with whole tree, stem only harvest and double residue harvest treatments.

Conclusions

These observations suggest that organic residue retention during the harvesting could improve the growth and ecosystem C stocks of Chinese fir in second rotation forest plantations in subtropical China and highlight the importance of viewing the ecosystem as a whole when evaluating the impact of harvest residue management on C stocks.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) fertilization, as a grassland management strategy, has been widely used to improve forage quality and increase the productivity of grasslands degraded by overstocking. It is widely accepted that N addition will alter ecosystem structure and function, and that these effects may be altered by natural disturbances, such as fire. We examined the effects of annual burning and N fertilization (17.5 g N m?2 year?1, at a surplus rate in order to simulate agriculture treatment) on foliar chemistry and stoichiometric ratios of eight dominant species (Leymus chinensis, Stipa grandis, Cleistogenes squarrosa, Potentilla bifurca, Thalictrum squarrosum, Artemisia frigida, Kochia prostrata and Caragana microphylla) in a temperate steppe in northern China. After 3 years of treatments, annual burning significantly increased soil extractable phosphorus (P) concentration but showed no effects on soil inorganic N concentration, whereas N fertilization caused a significant increase in inorganic N concentration but not of extractable P. Species differed substantially with respect to all nutritional and stoichiometric variables. Both annual burning and N fertilization caused significant increases in foliar N and P concentrations and thus decreases in carbon (C):N and C:P ratios. While annual burning showed no effects on N:P ratios, N fertilization produced higher N:P ratios. However, species responded idiosyncratically to both fire and N fertilization in terms of foliar N concentration, C:N and N:P ratio. In addition, there was no interaction between fire and N fertilization that affected all variables. This study suggests that both annual burning and N fertilization have direct impacts on plant elemental composition and that fire- and N addition-induced changes of community composition may have important consequences for plant-mediated biogeochemical cycling pathways in temperate steppe ecosystem.  相似文献

Disturbance regimes in much of the boreal forest have shifted from wildfire to clearcutting over the last century, resulting in concerns for biodiversity. Because the boreal forest has evolved under a natural fire regimes, we hypothesized that application of prescribed burning (PB) after clearcutting would result in plant communities more similar to wildfire than clearcut only. However, because clearcutting + PB involves multiple disturbances in a short interval, we proposed an alternate hypothesis that clearcutting + PB would result in a species composition and trait assemblage that differ from those that develop after a single wildfire or clearcutting event. We determined species composition, diversity, and trait composition of 17 clearcut, 17 clearcut + PB, and 15 wildfire sites of jack pine (Pinus banksiana) dominated forests in northwestern Ontario, Canada 15–37 years after disturbance. Contrary to our primary hypothesis we found that clearcut + PB formed communities different from wildfire and clearcut, the latter two being similar. Clearcut + PB harbored more early successional species associated with seed banking, wind dispersal, deciduous foliage, and alien origin than wildfire or clearcut sites, which showed no specific trait associations. Taxonomic and trait analysis of clearcut + PB sites exhibited effects of compound disturbances, as observed after short-interval fires, supporting our alternate hypothesis. We concluded that PB after clearcutting formed plant communities significantly different from those developed either after clearcutting or wildfire alone. We attribute this community divergence to the compounding effects associated with the addition of prescribed fire to these previously disturbed forests.  相似文献

Gap-dependent species are typically understood to have higher population growth rates (λs) when they are exposed to higher light transmittance. I investigated the relationship between both diffuse light and direct light transmittance and λ for the gap-dependent plant Trollius laxus using 5 years of data from 20 subpopulations (11 in created, experimental canopy gaps; 9 in intact canopy control areas). There was a nonlinear (unimodal) relationship between diffuse light and λ for T. laxus under the wide range of light levels encountered at the gap and control subpopulations [4–58 % diffuse photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD)]. There was no relationship between direct light and λ. However, in the gaps, where light levels were generally greater than 20 % PPFD, both diffuse light and direct light had strong negative linear relationships with λ. Therefore, under wide-ranging light regimes, plant populations may show complicated, nonlinear responses to gap formation. Furthermore, gap-dependent plant populations may even decline in the brightest gaps. These results demonstrate that future studies on forest plant population dynamics should strive to include populations from a wide variety of light regimes, and avoid broadly categorizing light regimes as simply “gap” or “non-gap.”  相似文献

The cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus affects the abundance of many fishes, including their juveniles, yet how they affect the post-settlement processes of conspecifics remains poorly known. Using a long-term experiment, where L. dimidiatus were regularly removed from seven patch reefs (removals) for 10 years or left undisturbed (controls) on nine, the effect of conspecifics’ presence on recently settled L. dimidiatus juveniles and the relationship between juvenile and adult abundance on control reefs were examined. Repeated sampling 4–40 months after manipulating L. dimidiatus revealed that the abundance of juveniles on removals, compared with controls reefs, was 72 % (95 % CI = 65–79 %) lower; this effect did not vary over time. Thus, decreased colonization was associated with resident conspecific absence and this effect was present after 4 months. Since other studies found 4 months of cleaner absence was too short to affect client abundance—a factor also known to enhance L. dimidiatus colonization—it was likely not involved here. Over 10 years, individual control reefs were almost always occupied by at least one adult (89–100 % of times sampled); but in summer, when L. dimidiatus colonization was highest, juvenile abundance was negatively related with adult abundance at one of two sites, with the expected number of juveniles decreasing by 67 % (95 % CI = 51–83 %) with each additional adult. This suggests a deleterious effect of adults on juveniles at one site, such as competition. Enhanced colonization of juveniles associated with adult presence may partly explain the relative permanence of fish cleaning stations.  相似文献
