Citrus trees have been considered as flooding-sensitive although important differences in tolerance among species have been reported. The tolerance to flooding has been linked to optimal photosynthetic performance in other woody plants. To test whether there was a relationship between photosynthetic performance and flooding tolerance, leaf damage, chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, the ratio of internal to ambient CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca), water use efficiency and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were studied in leaves of three citrus genotypes differing in their tolerance to flooding during continuous substrate flooding and alternate cycles of flooding and recovery. In Cleopatra and Citrumelo genotypes, marked reductions in net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance as well as increases in Ci/Ca in response to flooding stress were observed although with differences in the magnitude of the variation. In contrast, in Carrizo, a relatively flooding-tolerant genotype, there were no changes in net photosynthetic rate or in Ci/Ca and only a slight decrease in stomatal conductance occurred in response to flooding. Significant correlation between net photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters during flooding indicated a biochemical impairment of photosynthetic activity. This effect was apparently linked to damage in the PSII light-harvesting complexes induced by flooding and a subsequent effect on PSII to PSI electron flow that may alter the redox status in cells. Such biochemical impairment could lead to an increase in oxidative damage in Cleopatra and Citrumelo. The maintenance of good photosynthetic performance together with mechanisms to adjust electron flow in the photosynthetic apparatus could be linked to flooding tolerance in these woody plants.  相似文献

Diurnal dynamics of photosynthetic character of Angelica sinensis, as well as effect of continuous cropping on leaf photosynthetic character, antioxidant enzyme activity and growth of A. sinensis were investigated under field condition. The results showed that the diurnal net photosynthetic rate of A. sinensis in sunny day exhibited a double-peak pattern, and the peaks occurred at 9:45 and 16:45 h, respectively. There was a significant midday depression with A. sinensis, which was caused principally by stomatal factors such as stomatal conductance. The results also showed that net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), and chlorophyll content (Chl) of A. sinensis plants under continuous cropping were significantly lower than those of the control. The activity of total superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT), and growth parameters of A. sinensis plants were significantly decreased under continuous cropping condition. This study provides evidence of continuous cropping obstacle effect on photosynthesis, antioxidant enzyme activity, and growth parameters of A. sinensis in a field experiment, which partly explained the yield reduction of A. sinensis in the field, when it was cultivated continuously on the same soil.  相似文献

Midday depression of net photosynthesis and transpiration in the Mediterranean sclerophylls Arbutus unedo L. and Quercus suber L. occurs with a depression of mesophyll photosynthetic activity as indicated by calculated carboxylation efficiency (CE) and constant diurnal calculated leaf intercellular partial pressure of CO2 (Ci). This work examines the hypothesis that this midday depression can be explained by the distribution of patches of either wide-open or closed stomata on the leaf surface, independent of a coupling mechanism between stomata and mesophyll that results in a midday depression of photosynthetic activity of the mesophyll. Pressure infiltration of four liquids differing in their surface tension was used as a method to show the occurrence of stomatal patchiness and to determine the status of stomatal aperture within the patches. Liquids were selected such that the threshold leaf conductance necessary for infiltration through the stomatal pores covered the expected diurnal range of calculated leaf conductance (g) for these species. Infiltration experiments were carried out with leaves of potted plants under simulated Mediterranean summer conditions in a growth chamber. For all four liquids, leaves of both species were found to be fully infiltratable in the morning and in the late afternoon while during the periods leading up to and away from midday the leaves showed a pronounced patchy distribution of infiltratable and non-infiltratable areas. Similar linear relationships between the amount of liquid infiltrated and g (measured by porometry prior to detachment and infiltration) for all liquids clearly revealed the existence of pneumatically isolated patches containing only wide-open or closed stomata. The good correspondence between the midday depression of CE, calculated under the assumption of no stomatal patchiness, and the diurnal changes in non-infiltratable leaf area strongly indicates that the apparent reduction in mesophyll activity results from assuming no stomatal patchiness. It is suggested that simultaneous responses of stomata and mesophyll activity reported for other species may also be attributed to the occurrence of stomatal patchiness. In Quercus coccifera L., where the lack of constant diurnal calculated Ci and major depression of measured CE at noontime indicates different stomatal behavior, non-linear and dissimilar relationships between g and the infiltratable quantities of the four liquids were found. This indicates a wide distribution of stomatal aperture on the leaf surface rather than only wide-open or closed stomata.Dedicated to Professor Otto L. An experiment was performed to study gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence responses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) to various regimes, such as flooding–midseason drying–flooding (FDF), flooding–midseason drying–saturation (FDS), and flooding–rain-fed (FR) regimes. Compared to FDF, FR resulted in an obvious decrease in net photosynthetic rate (PN), due to the decrease in stomatal conductance and the increase in stomatal limitation. In contrast, FDS plants did not suffer stomatal limitation and had comparable PN with FDF plants. For diurnal light-saturated electron transport rate and saturation irradiance, FDF performed the best, which was followed by FDS and FR successively. FR and FDS plants tended to suffer from midday depression. FDS reduced irrigated water by 17.2% compared to FDF for comparable yields. The results suggested that FDS can be an effective irrigation regime to save water.  相似文献

Effects of nitrogen (N)-deficiency on midday photoinhibition in flag leaves were compared between two contrastive Japanese rice cultivars, a traditional japonica cultivar with low yield, cv. Shirobeniya (SRB), and a japonica-indica intermediate type with high yield, cv. Akenohoshi (AKN). Both cultivars were grown under high-N and low-N conditions. At midday, low-N supply resulted in more intensive reductions in net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, maximal quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) and quantum yield of PSII electron transport in SRB than in AKN, indicating that SRB was more strongly photoinhibited than AKN under low-N condition. At midday, the low-N plants of two cultivars showed higher superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities than the high-N plants. However, ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity was maintained in AKN but significantly decreased in SRB under low-N condition (N-deficiency). In contrast, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content in SRB significantly increased under low-N condition, indicating that the susceptibility to midday photoinhibition in the low-N plants of SRB is related to the increased H2O2 accumulation. It is suggested that the midday depression in photosynthesis may be a result of oxidative stress occurring in the low-N plants in which antioxidant capacity is not enough to cope with the generation of H2O2. Therefore, H2O2-scavenging capacity could be an important factor in determining the cultivar difference of midday photoinhibition in flag leaves of rice under low-N condition.  相似文献

The effect of high levels of natural light on leaf photosynthesisin olive trees (Olea europaea L. var. Coratina), grown in potsoutdoors in the summer and subjected to water, stress, was studied.Net photosynthetic rates reached maximum values early in themorning in both control and stressed plants and subsequentlydeclined gradually. This inactivation of photosynthetic activitywas accompanied by changes in the fluorescence characteristicsof the upper intact leaf surface. The maximum fluorescence yield(Fp) and the ratio Fv/Fp decreased at midday especially in water-stressedplants, but the initial fluorescence (Fo) rose to a maximumvalue at midday and declined again in the afternoon. In controlplants the values of maximum fluorescence Fp and the ratio Fv/Fpincreased again in the afternoon and had recovered almost completelyby 8 p.m. as the leaf water potential recovered. In stressedplants this diurnal recovery was not complete, so that the photosyntheticrates and the ratio Fv/Fp declined gradually during the developmentof water stress. These results indicate that in olive treessubjected to severe water stress the non-stomatal componentof photosynthesis was affected and perhaps a light-dependentinactivation of the primary photochemistry associated with photosystemII (PSII) occurred. Four to five days after rewatering severelystressed plants, the predawn leaf water potential, net photosyntheticrates and chlorophyll fluorescence indices recovered only partially. Photosynthetic responses of Populus przewalski subjected to drought stress   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Cuttings of P. przewalski were exposed to two different watering regimes which were watered to 100 and 25 % of field capacity (WW and WS, respectively). Drought stress not only significantly decreased net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) (Fv/Fm and yield), and increased intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) under controlled optimal conditions, but also altered the diurnal changes of gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, and WUEi. On the other hand, WS also affected the P N-photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) response curve. Under drought stress, P N peak appeared earlier (at about 10:30 of local time) than under WW condition (at about 12:30). At midday, there was a depression in P N for WS plants, but not for WW plants, and it could be caused by the whole microclimate, especially high temperature, low relative humidity, and high PAR. There were stomatal and non-stomatal limitations to photosynthesis. Stomatal limitation dominated in the morning, and low P N at midday was caused by both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations, whereas non-stomatal limitation dominated in the afternoon. In addition, drought stress also increased compensation irradiance and dark respiration rate, and decreased saturation irradiance and maximum net photosynthetic rate. Thus drought stress decreased plant assimilation and increased dissimilation through affected gas exchange, the diurnal pattern of gas exchange, and photosynthesis-PAR response curve, thereby reducing plant growth and productivity.  相似文献

The effects of ambient levels of ozone and summer drought were assessed on a poplar clone (Populus maximowiczii Henry X P. × berolinensis Dippel — Oxford clone) in an open top chamber experiment carried out at the Curno facilities (Northern Italy). Chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence parameters (from both modulated and direct fluorescence) were assessed at different hours of the day (predawn, morning, midday, afternoon, and evening), from June to August 2008. This paper compares the results from predawn (PD, before sunrise) and afternoon (AN, in full sunlight) measurements, in order to evaluate the role of high sunlight as a factor influencing responses to ozone stress. Sunlight affected the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry (decrease of Fv/Fm) thus indicating photoinhibition. The effective quantum yield (ΦPSII) and the photochemical quenching (qP) were enhanced in the afternoon with respect to the predawn, whereas the nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was reduced. The effect of ozone was detected with fluorescence on well watered plants in the first week of July, before the onset of visible symptoms. As far as Fv/Fm are concerned, the differences between ozone-treated and control plants were statistically significant in the predawn, but not in the afternoon. Ozone exerted only minor effects on drought exposed plants because of the reduced stomatal ozone uptake, but effects on the IP phase of the fluorescence transient were observed also in drought-stressed plants.  相似文献

The altitudinal effects on photosynthesis were measured on progenies of three populations of Rosa platyacantha Schrenk from altitudes of 1,170 (L); 1,580 (M); and 1,920 (H) m a. s. l. During the day, net photosynthetic rate (PN) decreased in all populations due to the high air temperature in the summer. The H population showed a significantly lower PN at noon compared to other populations. The midday depression of PN occurred in L and M populations due to stomatal limitations, while PN inhibition was associated with PSII activity decline in the H population. In order to avoid photodamage, the plants of H population triggered active antioxidant defenses with a higher enzyme activity and redox ratio of ascorbate at midday compared to the L and M populations. However, more oxidative injury still occurred in the H plants at noon due to higher lipid peroxidation. Our results indicated that the provenance significantly affected photosynthesis in R. platyacantha from northwestern China.  相似文献

The possibility that Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is subject to long day photoperiodic control in Portulacaria afra (L.) Jacq., a facultative CAM plant, was studied. Periodic measurements of 14CO2 uptake, stomatal resistance, and titratable acidity were made on plants exposed to long and short day photoperiods. Results indicates that waterstressed P. afra had primarily nocturnal CO2 uptake, daytime stomatal closure, and a large diurnal acid fluctuation in either photoperiod. Mature leaf tissue from nonstressed plants under long days exhibited a moderate diurnal acid fluctuation and midday stomatal closure. Under short days, there was a reduced diurnal acid fluctuation in mature leaf tissue. Young leaf tissue taken from nonstressed plants did not utilize the CAM pathway under either photoperiod as indicated by daytime CO2 uptake, lack of diurnal acid fluctuation, and incomplete daytime stomatal closure.

The induction of CAM in P. afra appears to be related to the water status of the plant and the age of the leaf tissue. The photosynthetic metabolism of mature leaves may be partly under the control of water stress and of photoperiod, where CAM is favored under long days.

Diurnal courses of gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, shoot water potential (Ψ) and leaf relative water content (RWCleaf) were recorded in Chamaecytisus proliferus (L. fil.) Link ssp. proliferus var. palmensis (Christ) (tagasaste) growing in natural conditions in the North-West slope of Tenerife, Canary Islands. During the studied period (April–July 2000), the soil relative water content (RWCsoil) progressively decreased, while the air vapour pressure deficit increased. As a consequence a decrease in Ψ and RWCleaf took place as well as a decrease in stomatal conductance (gs) and CO2 assimilation rate (A). These characteristics, typical of an anisohydric plant, allowed this species to endure a mild drought.Photochemical efficiency of PSII (φPSII) followed the inverse pattern to that observed for the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), decreasing at midday and recovering during the late afternoon. This recovering at the end of each day, and the constant values of the maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) during the studied period, indicate that there was no permanent damage to the photosynthetic apparatus due to mild water stress.  相似文献

The irrigation of olive orchards is commonly applied to produce table olives with optimal size. No data have been published on the microbiological quality of drupes from irrigated olive groves during fermentation. The trials T100 and T50 (receiving a water amount equivalent to 100 % and 50 % of the required amount, respectively) and control T0 (rainfed trial) were monitored during two consecutive years. The results showed a significant increase of equatorial diameter and flesh:pit ratio of irrigated drupes. The decrease of pH and the numbers of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) registered for the irrigated trials during the fermentation were more consistent than those displayed by control T0. Lactobacillus pentosus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus coryniformis, and Pediococcus pentosaceus for LAB and Candida boidinii, Candida diddensiae, and Wickerhamomyces anomalus for yeasts were isolated at the highest concentrations. The global sensory acceptance was better for irrigated trials than control T0. The statistical multivariate analysis showed that the effect of irrigation was independent of the seasonal variability and it clearly distinguished the T100 and T50 trials from rainfed control. Irrigation improves significantly the quality of table olives. Interestingly, all explorative multivariate analyses showed low dissimilarity between irrigated trials; thus, the thesis T50 represents an effective approach to save water in olive orchards without compromising the quality of table olives.  相似文献

A field experiment on olive trees (Olea europaea L.) was designed with the objective to search for an optimum irrigation scheduling by analyzing the possible effects of deficit irrigation. Treatments were: a non-irrigated control (rainfed) and three treatments that received seasonal water amount equivalent to 33 and 66% of crop evapotranspiration (ETC) in the period August–September (respectively 33II and 66II), and 66% of (ETC) from late May to early October (66I-II). Atmospheric evaporative demand and soil moisture conditions were regularly monitored. Irrigation effects on plant water relations were characterized throughout a growing season. Whole-plant water use, in deficit irrigated (66I-II) and rainfed olive trees, was determined using a xylem sap flow method (compensation heat-pulse technique). The magnitude of variations in water use and the seasonal dynamic of water relations varied among treatments, suggesting that olive trees were strongly responsive to both irrigation amount and time. Physiological parameters responded to variations in tree water status, soil moisture conditions and atmospheric evaporative demand. All measurements of tree water status were highly correlated with one another. There was a considerable degree of agreement between daily transpiration deduced from heat-pulse velocity and that determined by calibration using the water balance technique. Deficit irrigation during the whole summer (66I-II) resulted in improved plant water relations with respect to other watering regimes; while, severe regulated deficit irrigation differentiated only slightly 33II treatment from rainfed plants. Nevertheless, regulated deficit irrigation of olive trees after pit hardening (66II) could be recommended, at least in soil, cultivar and environmental conditions of this study.  相似文献

Open-top chambers were used to study the effects of CO2 enrichment on leaf-level photosynthetic rates of the C4 grass Andropogon gerardii in the native tallgrass prairie ecosystem near Manhattan, Kansas. Measurements were made during a year with abundant rainfall (1993) and a year with below-normal rainfall (1994). Treatments included: No chamber, ambient CO2 (A); chamber with ambient CO2 (CA); and chamber with twice-ambient CO2 (CE). Measurements of photosynthesis were made at 2-hour intervals, or at midday, on cloudless days throughout the growing season using an open-flow gas-exchange system. No significant differences in midday rates of photosynthesis or in daily carbon accumulation as a result of CO2 enrichment were found in the year with abundant precipitation. In the dry year, midday rates of photosynthesis were significantly higher in the CE treatment than in the CA or A treatments throughout the season. Estimates of daily carbon accumulation also indicated that CO2 enrichment allowed plants to maximize carbon acquisition on a diurnal basis. The increased carbon accumulation was accounted for by greater rates of photosynthesis in the CE plots during midday. During the wet year, CO2 enrichment decreased stomatal conductance, which allowed plants to decrease transpiration while still photosynthesizing at rates similar to plants in ambient conditions. During the dry year, CO2 enrichment allowed plants to maintain photosynthetic rates even though stomatal conductance and transpiration had been reduced in all treatments due to stress. Estimates of instantaneous water-use efficiency were reduced under CO2 enrichment for both years. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Aleurocanthus woglumi (Ashby, 1915) is an important agricultural pest that causes yield losses of 20–80% in citrus plants by removing plant nutrients while feeding and allowing the formation of sooty mold. The objective of this study was to evaluate physiological changes in citrus plants in response to A. woglumi infestation under field conditions. The experiment was conducted in a citrus orchard in Paço do Lumiar, Maranhão, Brazil. Thirty-two citrus plants were used, including eight of each of the following varieties: Tahiti lime, Tanjaroa tangerine, Nissey tangerine, and Ponkan tangerine. Four random plants with A. woglumi infestation and four plants free from this pest were selected from each variety. The physiological parameters evaluated were photochemical efficiency and gas exchange. Regarding photochemical efficiency, infested plants presented photoinhibition damage, with a performance index of 4.22. The gas exchange parameters of infested plants changed, with reductions in photosynthetic CO2 assimilation of 69.7% (Tahiti), 64% (Tanjaroa), 68.8% (Nissey) and 63.3% (Ponkan). Plants infested with A. woglumi also presented physiological changes; their photosynthetic CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, instantaneous transpiration, and performance indexes were affected. The infested citrus plants showed photoinhibition of photosystem II. The photosynthetic CO2 assimilation decreased approximately 70% in Tahiti lime, Tanjaroa tangerine, Nissey tangerine, and Ponkan tangerine plants infested with A. woglumi.  相似文献

The differences in some morphological and physiological characteristics of sun- and shade-adapted Haberlea rhodopensis plants were compared. Changes in the photosynthetic activity, electrolyte leakage from leaf tissues, malondialdehyde content (MDA) and leaf anatomy were studied at different degrees of desiccation as well as after rehydration of plants. The MDA content in well-watered sun Haberlea plants was higher compared to shade plants suggesting higher lipid peroxidation, which is commonly regarded as an indicator of oxidative stress, but desiccation of plants at high light did not cause additional oxidative damage as judged by the unaffected MDA content. The electrolyte leakage from dried leaves (8% RWC) from both shade and sun plants increased fourfold indicating similar membrane damage. However, the recovery after rehydration showed that this damage was reversible. Well-watered sun plants had higher photosynthetic activity probably due to the larger thickness of the mesophyll layer in such plants. On the other hand, desiccation at high light reduced CO2 assimilation which was in accordance with the stronger reduction of stomatal conductance. Stomata were visible only on the abaxial side of sun leaves having also higher abundance of non-glandular trichomes. Increased trichomes density and epicuticular waxes and filaments upon desiccation could help plants to increase reflection, reduce net radiation income, slow down the rate of water loss and survive adverse conditions.  相似文献

Nuphar lutea is an amphibious plant with submerged and aerial foliage, which raises the question how do both leaf types perform photosynthetically in two different environments. We found that the aerial leaves function like terrestrial sun-leaves in that their photosynthetic capability was high and saturated under high irradiance (ca. 1,500 μmol photons m−2 s−1). We show that stomatal opening and Rubisco activity in these leaves co-limited photosynthesis at saturating irradiance fluctuating in a daily rhythm. In the morning, sunlight stimulated stomatal opening, Rubisco synthesis, and the neutralization of a night-accumulated Rubisco inhibitor. Consequently, the light-saturated quantum efficiency and rate of photosynthesis increased 10-fold by midday. During the afternoon, gradual closure of the stomata and a decrease in Rubisco content reduced the light-saturated photosynthetic rate. However, at limited irradiance, stomatal behavior and Rubisco content had only a marginal effect on the photosynthetic rate, which did not change during the day. In contrast to the aerial leaves, the photosynthesis rate of the submerged leaves, adapted to a shaded environment, was saturated under lower irradiance. The light-saturated quantum efficiency of these leaves was much lower and did not change during the day. Due to their low photosynthetic affinity for CO2 (35 μM) and inability to utilize other inorganic carbon species, their photosynthetic rate at air-equilibrated water was CO2-limited. These results reveal differences in the photosynthetic performance of the two types of Nuphar leaves and unravel how photosynthetic daily rhythm in the aerial leaves is controlled.  相似文献

Summary Gas exchange characteristics in leaves of the sclerophyll shrub Quercus coccifera were studied in the natural habitat in Portugal during spring and during the summer dry period. Compared to other sclerophyll species growing at the same site, photosynthesis in leaves of Quercus coccifera was less affected by water stress. Moderate water stress after six weeks of drought led to large decreases in stomatal conductance but no change in mesophyll photosynthetic capacity as compared to late spring. Leaf internal CO2 pressure remained near 220 bar during diurnal courses in the spring. On midsummer days, leaf internal CO2 decreased from a late morning value of 200 bar to a late afternoon value of approximately 150 bar. In contrast to Quercus suber (Tenhunen et al. 1984), restriction of CO2 supply due to stomatal closure reduced net CO2 uptake at midday and in the afternoon during midsummer. A decrease in leaf carboxylation efficiency and an increase in CO2 compensation point at midday also played an important role in determining the diurnal course of net photosynthesis. During the late stages of drought in September, severe water stress led to reduction in mesophyll photosynthetic capacity and further reduction in leaf conductance. The observed decrease in mesophyll photosynthetic capacity was correlated with decrease in the daily minimum leaf water potential to greater negative values than-30 bar. At this time, CO2 saturated photosynthetic rates decreased as much as 50% over the course of a day when measured at constant saturating light, 32° C leaf temperature, and a water vapor mole fraction difference between leaf and air of 30 mbar bar-1.  相似文献

Summary Yucca glauca in the Colorado shortgrass prairie undergoes a pronounced midday depression in net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance under summer field conditions. This phenomenon can be duplicated in the laboratory using potted plants by simulating a typical summer daily pattern of leaf temperature and leaf-to-air water vapor concentration difference (w). The decrease in photosynthetic rate appears to be due primarily to high leaf temperatures, while the decrease in stomatal conductance can be attributed mainly to high w values. Stomatal conductance also decreases when leaf temperatures exceed a critical threshold value, even when w is artificially maintained at a constant level. The threshold temperature is commonly attained for leaves in situ, but only after substantial stomatal closure has already occurred as a result of high w values. The photosynthetic temperature optimum and threshold temperature which promotes stomatal closure increases substantially as the growing season progresses. As a result, the midday depression in photosynthesis occurs at higher temperatures in mid-summer than in late spring. Preliminary evidence suggests that the photosynthetic temperature optimum closely follows the naturally-occurring morning leaf temperatures, while the threshold temperature for stomatal closure matches afternoon leaf temperatures.  相似文献
