The excitation of oscillations in a discharge with negative differential conductivity is studied experimentally. The possibility is demonstrated of amplifying oscillations in the cathode dark space at frequencies close to the electron plasma frequency of the positive-column plasma. The phase velocities of waves at these frequencies are determined. When the waves pass from the cathode dark space to the discharge positive column, their phase velocities decrease; the closer the frequency is to the electron plasma frequency, the more pronounced the decrease in the phase velocity. As the intensity of oscillations increases, the discharge becomes non-steady-state. This is confirmed by the time evolution of the current-voltage characteristic. The shape of the current-voltage characteristic, its splitting, and the rate at which it varies depend on the input RF power. The decrease in the cathode dark space indicates that the ionization processes in the discharge are strongly influenced by electron plasma oscillations excited due to the collective interaction of the electron beam formed at the cathode with the discharge plasma. It is these processes that determine the maximum values of both the frequency of the excited oscillations and the power that can be withdrawn from the discharge.  相似文献

A collisional radiative model for an ArII ion is constructed. The populations of the excited states of ArII ions in a plasma of a magnetic confinement system are calculated. It is shown that, in such a plasma, the populations of metastable states are independent of the electron density but, at the same time, are fairly sensitive to the electron temperature. These results allow one to estimate the electron temperature from the measurements of the Doppler profiles of the spectral lines by the laser fluorescence diagnostics. The populations of nonmetastable states calculated as functions of the plasma parameters also make it possible to estimate the electron temperature from passive spectroscopy measurements.  相似文献

Generation, amplification, and propagation of auroral kilometric radiation in a narrow three-dimensional plasma cavity in which a weakly relativistic electron beam propagates is studied in the geometrical optics approximation. It is shown that the waves that start with a group velocity directed earthward and have optimal relation between the wave vector components determining the linear growth rate and the wave residence time inside the amplification region undergo the largest amplification. Taking into account the longitudinal velocity of fast electrons results in the shift of the instability domain toward wave vectors directed to the Earth and leads to a change in the dispersion relation, due to which favorable conditions are created for the generation of waves with frequencies above the cutoff frequency for the cold background plasma at the wave generation altitude. The amplification factor for these waves is lower than for waves that have the same wave vectors but are excited by the electron beams with lower velocities along the magnetic field. For waves excited at frequencies below the cutoff frequency of the background plasma at the generation altitude, the amplification factor increases with increasing longitudinal electron velocity, because these waves reside for a longer time in the amplification region.  相似文献

A new method for measuring the plasma density in magnetic confinement systems—pulsed time-of-flight refractometry—is developed and tested experimentally in the T-11M tokamak. The method is based on the measurements of the time delay of short (with a duration of several nanoseconds) microwave pulses propagating through the plasma. When the probing frequency is much higher than the plasma frequency, the measured delay in the propagation time is proportional to the line-averaged electron density regardless of the density profile. A key problem in such measurements is the short time delay of the pulse in the plasma (~1 ns or less for small devices) and, consequently, low accuracy of the measurements of the average density. Various methods for improving the accuracy of such measurements are proposed and implemented in the T-11M experiments. The measurements of the line-averaged density in the T-11M tokamak in the low-density plasma regime are performed. The results obtained agree satisfactorily with interferometric data. The measurement errors are analyzed, and the possibility of using this technique to measure the electron density profile and the position of the plasma column is discussed.  相似文献

It is shown that a short laser pulse propagating in a plasma with electron density fluctuations can emit electromagnetic waves with frequencies much lower than the laser carrier frequency. Emissions with frequencies close to the plasma frequency and the doubled plasma frequency in a nonisothermal plasma, as well as emission generated in a turbulent plasma, are examined. The effects in question are related to the transformation of the laser pulse wakefield into electromagnetic radiation by electron density fluctuations. The phenomenon under study opens new possibilities for diagnostics of both plasma fields excited by laser pulses and electron density fluctuations in a plasma.  相似文献

Large-scale plasma oscillations (so-called MHD oscillations) observed at the T-10 tokamak are investigated. The central electron cyclotron heating was used to enhance oscillations at the m/n = 1/1 mode with the goal of determining the internal characteristics of the process. The spatially resolved electron cyclotron emission diagnostics allowed analyzing the propagation characteristics of plasma perturbations. The experiments have revealed that excitation of oscillations in a particular mode occur simultaneously in the entire area located within the corresponding rational magnetic surface. The propagation of plasma perturbations along the torus is found to be inhomogeneous. The electron cyclotron emission diagnostics allowed finding eigen (resonance) frequencies of plasma oscillations from the parameters of their inhomogeneous propagation in the plasma core and comparing them with spectra of oscillations of the magnetic field induced by the plasma current in the edge plasma, which were recorded by magnetic probes. It is established that the frequencies of eigenmodes are independent of the electron temperature, plasma density, and auxiliary heating power. Even spatial harmonics of the principal magnetic surface are observed under strong excitation of oscillations. The rational magnetic surfaces that determine oscillation harmonics retain their position during the entire steady-state phase of the total plasma current in spite of the strong sharpening of the temperature profile due to central heating.  相似文献

Eigenmodes of an axisymmetric plasma column that is uniform along the magnetic field are investigated. It is shown that, as the plasma density increases, eigenmodes with frequencies close to the electron gyrofrequency tend to localize at the plasma periphery. This effect is likely to restrict the electron density at which the plasma can be heated by means of such modes. A theory is developed for the excitation of the eigenmodes of a plasma column in a weakly nonuniform magnetic field by an external antenna.  相似文献

A multichannel Thomson scattering diagnostics for measuring the plasma parameters in the GOL-3 facility was designed and created at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The diagnostics operates at the fundamental harmonic of a neodymium laser (1.06 μm) and allows one to perform measurements over a wide range of electron temperatures and densities with high spatial and time resolutions. A special multipulse oscillator is developed that makes it possible to perform up to 20 measurements of the plasma temperature and density over a period of 300 μs during one shot. The laser used to generate probing radiation, the recording system, and the calibration procedure are described. Results from measurements of the temporal evolution of the plasma density in the GOL-3 in different stages of the discharge are presented to illustrate the system operation. Original Russian Text ? Results are presented from measurements of the electron temperature and neutral atom density in a low-temperature microwave plasma by the method of emission spectroscopy. The measurements were conducted in the PNX-U facility—a magnetic confinement system with a “magnetic wall.” Multichord measurements of plasma radiation at a wavelength of 750.37 nm were performed with the help of an absolutely calibrated monochromator. The neutral atom density was calculated using the collisional-radiative model. The degree of plasma ionization near the axis of the facility was found to be close to unity. The electron temperature of the argon plasma was measured from the relative intensities of the spectral lines of neutral helium injected in small amounts into the plasma (the so-called helium thermometer method). At a low microwave heating power, the results of these measurements agree well with the results of probe measurements.  相似文献

The problem is solved of the stability of a nonneutral plasma that completely fills a waveguide and consists of magnetized cold electrons and a small density fraction of ions produced by ionization of the atoms of the background gas. The ions are described by an anisotropic distribution function that takes into account the characteristic features of their production in crossed electric and magnetic fields. By solving a set of Vlasov-Poisson equations analytically, a dispersion equation is obtained that is valid over the entire range of allowable electric and magnetic field strengths. The solutions to the dispersion equation for the m = +1 main azimuthal mode are found numerically. The plasma oscillation spectrum consists of the families of Trivelpiece-Gould modes at frequencies equal to the frequencies of oblique Langmuir oscillations Doppler shifted by the electron rotation and also of the families of “modified” ion cyclotron (MIC) modes at frequencies close to the harmonics of the MIC frequency (the frequencies of radial ion oscillations in crossed fields). It is shown that, over a wide range of electric and magnetic field strengths, Trivelpiece-Gould modes have low frequencies and interact with MIC modes. Trivelpiece-Gould modes at frequencies close to the harmonics of the MIC frequency with nonnegative numbers are unstable. The lowest radial Trivelpiece-Gould mode at a frequency close to the zeroth harmonic of the MIC frequency has the fastest growth rate. MIC modes are unstable over a wide range of electric and magnetic field strengths and grow at far slower rates. For a low ion density, a simplified dispersion equation is derived perturbatively that accounts for the nonlocal ion contribution, but, at the same time, has the form of a local dispersion equation for a plasma with a transverse current and anisotropic ions. The solutions to the simplified dispersion equation are obtained analytically. The growth rates of the Trivelpiece-Gould modes and the behavior of the MIC modes agree with those obtained by numerical simulation.  相似文献

A weeping pulsed radar reflectometer designed for measuring the spatial electron density distribution in the Globus-M spherical tokamak with a minor plasma radius of a=24 cm, a major radius of R=36 cm, a toroidal field of B T=0.5 T, a plasma current of I p=200 kA, and an average density of n=(3–10)×1013 cm?3 is described. The reflectometer operation is based on the reflection of microwaves with a carrier frequency f from a plasma layer with the critical density n=(0.0111f)2, where n is the electron density in units of 1014 cm?3 and f is the microwave frequency in GHz. By simultaneously probing the plasma at different frequencies, it is possible to recover the electron density profile. Microwave pulses with different frequencies are obtained by frequency sweeping. To increase the range of measured densities, channels with fixed frequencies are also used; as a result, the instrument has eleven frequency channels: a 19.5-GHz channel, eight channels in the 26-to 40-GHz frequency range, a 51.5-GHz channel, and a 60-GHz channel, which corresponds to eleven points in the density profile: 0.47×1013 cm?3, eight points in the (0.8–1.95)×1013-cm?3 range, 3.27×1013 cm?3, and 4.5×1013 cm?3. The reflectometer allows detailed measurements of the density profile with a time resolution of several tens of microseconds, which can be useful, in particular, in studying the processes related to the formation of an internal transport barrier in plasma. The first results obtained using this reflectometer in the Globus-M tokamak under various operating conditions are discussed.  相似文献

Saturation transfer electron paramagnetic resonance (ST-EPR) spectroscopy has been employed to characterize the very slow microsecond to millisecond rotational dynamics of a wide range of nitroxide spin-labeled proteins and other macromolecules in the past three decades. The vast majority of this previous work has been carried out on spectrometers that operate at X-band ( approximately 9 GHz) microwave frequency with a few investigations reported at Q-band ( approximately 34 GHz). EPR spectrometers that operate in the 94-250-GHz range and that are capable of making conventional linear EPR measurements on small aqueous samples have now been developed. This work addresses potential advantages of utilizing these same high frequencies for ST-EPR studies that seek to quantitatively analyze the very slow rotational dynamics of spin-labeled macromolecules. For example, the uniaxial rotational diffusion (URD) model has been shown to be particularly applicable to the study of the rotational dynamics of integral membrane proteins. Computational algorithms have been employed to define the sensitivity of ST-EPR signals at 94, 140, and 250 GHz to the correlation time for URD, to the amplitude of constrained URD, and to the orientation of the spin label relative to the URD axis. The calculations presented in this work demonstrate that these higher microwave frequencies provide substantial increases in sensitivity to the correlation time for URD, to small constraints in URD, and to the geometry of the spin label relative to the URD axis as compared with measurements made at X-band. Moreover, the calculations at these higher frequencies indicate sensitivity to rotational motions in the 1-100-ms time window, particularly at 250 GHz, thereby extending the slow motion limit for ST-EPR by two orders of magnitude relative to X- and Q-bands.  相似文献

Oscillations of a plasma column in a longitudinal magnetic field are considered. It is found that eigenmodes with frequencies close to the ion cyclotron frequency can be excited in columns the radii of which are smaller than the characteristic wavelength of magnetosonic oscillations predicted by the theory of homogeneous plasma. The eigenmodes have the form of waves running around the column axis in the direction of electron gyration in the magnetic field. Magnetosonic oscillations can be excited as a side effect when using helical antennas for ion cyclotron resonance heating of plasma. These oscillations should enhance electron heating in the plasma core, as well as both electron and ion heating at the periphery of the plasma column. The spectrum of eigenmodes of inhomogeneous plasma columns includes oscillations of different nature. Comparative analysis of their properties performed in the present paper is useful for understanding the full picture of the physical processes occurring during ion cyclotron resonance heating and clarifying the characteristic features of the magnetosonic oscillations under study.  相似文献

Large-scale plasma oscillations (so-called MHD oscillations) in the T-10 tokamak are investigated. The central electron cyclotron heating was used to enhance oscillations at the m/n = 1/1 mode with the goal of determining the internal characteristics of the process. Spatially resolved measurements of electron cyclotron emission in a wide frequency range for two polarizations allowed for analyzing a number of effects indicating the kinetic nature of plasma oscillations. The major part of the electron distribution over longitudinal velocities in the plasma core experiences strong periodic oscillations accompanied by synchronous spikes of radiation emitted by high-energy electrons at the edge of the plasma column.  相似文献

A study is made of the modification of the spectra of electron cyclotron emission from an ECR heated plasma in a toroidal magnetic confinement system into which the heating radiation is launched from the low-field side. It is shown that, at frequencies close to the heating frequency, cyclotron emission can become more intense because of the deformation of the distribution function of the resonant electrons. This effect can be used to diagnose the slightly pronounced quasilinear perturbations of the electron distribution in the thermal energy range, which are typical of experiments on ECR plasma heating. Results of a qualitative analysis carried out for model electron distribution functions are presented, and examples of three-dimensional numerical simulations of a circular tokamak are described.  相似文献

Excitation of plasma waves by nonlinear currents induced by a high-frequency electromagnetic pulse is analyzed within the kinetic approach. It is shown that the most efficient source of plasma waves is the nonlinear current arising due to the gradient of the energy density of the high-frequency field. Generation of plasma waves by the drag current is usually less efficient but not negligibly small at relatively high frequencies of electron–ion collisions. The influence of electron collisions on the excitation of plasma waves by pulses of different duration is described quantitatively.  相似文献

A study is made of radio-wave scattering by Langmuir turbulent pulsations in a plasma in a magnetic field. The effect of this process on the polarization of radio waves at frequencies far above or close to the electron plasma frequency is investigated. The wave scattering by Langmuir turbulence is shown to strongly affect the polarization characteristics. When the optical thickness typical of the scattering process is on the order of unity, the degree of wave polarization can change by 30% both at high frequencies and at frequencies close to the plasma frequency, in which case the circular polarization can reverse direction. It is shown that, as a result of wave scattering by Langmuir turbulence, the degree of circular polarization of radio waves depends on the wavelength even in a uniform magnetic field.  相似文献

Unambiguous diagnostics intended for measuring the time behavior of the electron density and monitoring the line-averaged plasma density in the T-11M tokamak are described. The time behavior of the plasma density in the T-11M tokamak is measured by a multichannel phase-jump-free microwave polarization interferometer based on the Cotton-Mouton effect. After increasing the number of simultaneously operating interferometer channels and enhancing the sensitivity of measurements, it became possible to measure the time evolution of the plasma density profile in the T-11M tokamak. The first results from such measurements in various operating regimes of the T-11M tokamak are presented. The measurement and data processing techniques are described, the measurement errors are analyzed, and the results obtained are discussed. We propose using a pulsed time-of-flight refractometer to monitor the average plasma density in the T-11M tokamak. The refractometer emits nanosecond microwave probing pulses with a carrier frequency that is higher than the plasma frequency and, thus, operates in the transmission mode. A version of the instrument has been developed with a carrier frequency of 140 GHz, which allows one to measure the average density in regimes with a nominal T-11M plasma density of (3–5)×1013 cm?3. Results are presented from the first measurements of the average density in the T-11M tokamak with the help of a pulsed time-of-flight refractometer by probing the plasma in the equatorial plane in a regime with the reflection of the probing radiation from the inner wall of the vacuum chamber.  相似文献

The potentialities of the diagnostic method for determining the plasma parameters by recording the surface waves guided by a dielectric waveguide and scattered by plasma oscillations are discussed. The use of surface (slowed) waves makes it possible to improve both the sensitivity and spatial resolution of measurements. The scattering is the most intense near the waveguide cutoff, at which the dependence of the wave propagation constant on the plasma density is the steepest. It is shown experimentally that the method proposed makes it possible to determine the discharge plasma density and electron energy and to estimate the amplitude of the RF field of the plasma waves forming the discharge and the amplitude of plasma density oscillations in these waves. The data obtained from the measurements of the amplitudes of both high-and low-frequency plasma density oscillations by the proposed method agree satisfactorily with theoretical predictions. The experimental data on the plasma density are confirmed by other diagnostic measurements. The ways of reducing measurement errors are proposed.  相似文献

Analysis of the results of polarimetric measurements of X-ray line radiation of multicharged ions in a Z-pinch discharge indicates that the formation of an anisotropic electron velocity distribution in the neck of the current channel and the generation of highly charged ions are separated in time. The generation of a fast electron beam in the longitudinal ohmic electric field in the stage of plasma compression in the neck results in the polarization of X-ray bremsstrahlung continuum. In the stage of expansion of the hot dense micropinch plasma, the radial electric field prevails, due to which X-ray line radiation of multicharged ions becomes linearly polarized.  相似文献
