During the dawn chorus, territorial male songbirds vocalise intensively within signalling range of several conspecific males and can therefore be considered members of a busy communication network. The more or less continuous singing over a long period of time under standardised stimulus conditions makes the dawn song a potentially important information source both for simple receivers and for eavesdroppers. Male blue tits (Parus caeruleus) vary in features of their dawn song, e.g. older males sing longer strophes, and females choose males that sing longer strophes as extra-pair partners. However, so far, dawn song in the blue tit has been investigated separately from other singing behaviour of the same males. In this study, we investigate aspects of blue tit male quality, reflected in dawn song characteristics, and their predictive value for how males behave during singing interactions later in the morning. We acted as simple receivers by recording the singing activity of one male at a time at dawn and compared features of its dawn song, such as onset before sunrise, repertoire size, mean bout length, strophe length and percentage performance time to responses of the same male to a territory intrusion simulated by playback of synthesised songs later during the same morning. We assume that an aggressive response towards an intruder will involve a fast approach to the loudspeaker broadcasting strophes of blue tit song, searching for the intruder (flying around), and a high amount of counter singing and overlapping of the intruders songs. Aspects of vigour of response to the simulated intrusion could be predicted from all five investigated dawn song parameters as well as male age. This is, to our knowledge, the first indication that a simple receiver could extract reliable information from a males dawn singing behaviour about its competitiveness later in the day.Communicated by P.K. Sexual selection theory suggests that females might prefer males on the basis of testosterone (T)‐dependent secondary sexual traits such as song. Correlational studies have linked high plasma T‐levels to high diurnal song output. This has been confirmed in experiments where T‐levels were kept high at times when natural T‐levels have decreased. However, surprisingly little is known about the relation between T‐levels during the early breeding season and song. In many passerine birds males sing at a high rate at dawn early in the breeding season, referred to as the dawn chorus. In blue tits (Parus caeruleus), the dawn chorus coincides with the fertile period of the female, whereas diurnal song occurs throughout the breeding season. Previous studies on blue tits showed that characteristics of the dawn chorus correlate with male reproductive success. We experimentally elevated plasma T‐levels in male blue tits during the pre‐fertile and fertile period. Our aim was to test whether increased plasma T‐levels affect dawn song characteristics and increase the amount of diurnal song. Although T‐implants successfully raised circulating T‐levels, we did not find any difference between T‐ and control males in temporal performance measures of dawn song or in diurnal song output. Our results suggest that either there is no direct causal link between song output or quality and individual T‐levels, or experimental manipulations of T‐levels using implants do not permit detection of such effects during the early breeding season. Although we cannot exclude that individual T‐levels are causally linked to other (e.g. structural) song parameters, our results cast doubt on T‐dependence as the mechanisms that enforces honesty on song as a sexually selected trait.  相似文献

Many bird species participate in dawn singing, a behaviour categorized by intensive singing at dawn; however, many of these species deliver only one song type at dawn. While there are many proximate and ultimate hypotheses for why birds sing at dawn, little is known about whether males are able to vary one simple song to convey different information. We used autonomous acoustic recorders to record dawn songs of field sparrows and quantified three parameters of singing performance: 1) bout length, 2) song rate, and 3) song complexity. We found that males sang the longest dawn bouts during their mate's fertile period, the highest song rates during the post-fertile period, and the most complex songs during the pre-fertile period. The change in dawn singing behaviour with their mate's breeding stage suggest the purpose of dawn song may be context dependent. Our results demonstrate that male field sparrows, while only having a single song type sung at dawn, may convey information for both intra- and intersexual purposes. While it is generally assumed that dawn song has a specific function, the variability in the duration, rate, and complexity of dawn song in field sparrows suggests that they are conveying different information and that dawn song likely has multiple functions.  相似文献

Many aspects of the social behaviour of birds are mediated by vocal displays, and variation in song output or song structure conveys different information to receivers. After nest construction begins, when vermilion flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus) females are potentially fertile, males increase their song rate during the dawn chorus. A previous study failed to give evidence that males discriminate among song rates. However, males sing in sequences of songs (song bouts), and an increase in song rate may be achieved by increasing the number of bouts, the number of songs in each bout (bout size) or both. Studying a vermilion flycatcher population in Mexico City, we evaluated whether dawn song rate is related to song bout size or to number of bouts. Bout size correlated with song rate and differed among males. We hypothesized that longer bouts are more threatening signals than shorter ones and predicted a stronger response by males towards the former. We exposed each male to three playback treatments: (1) Long song bout (Long), in which we replied to the male with twice the number of songs he sang in the bout, (2) Short song bout (Short), in which we played half the number of songs sung by the male and (3) Control, this was the same as the Long treatment but we used songs from a related species, the tropical kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus). Males responded with a higher proportion of calls near the speaker when exposed to the Long treatment than during the Short or Control treatments, indicating that they discriminate among song bouts differing in size, that they may perceive longer bouts as more threatening and that they use calls rather than songs to address threatening situations. Our results suggest that song bout size is a relevant song attribute that conveys information during intrasexual interactions.  相似文献

Male singing behaviour correlates with extra-pair success in several passerine birds. Singing interactions during territorial contests provide relative information on the males involved. Such information may be important in female extra-pair behaviour and eavesdropping on singing interactions among males may allow females to make such relative assessments. We used interactive playback to instigate singing contests with male great tits during the peak fertile period of their mate in an attempt to alter females'' assessment of mates'' quality relative to neighbours (potential extra-pair partners). We escalated a contest to one male (by overlapping his songs) and then subsequently de-escalated a contest (by alternating) to a neighbour. Intrusions onto neighbouring territories by females mated to either treatment male were then monitored. Females mated to escalation treatment males were more likely to intrude following playbacks than females mated to de-escalation treatment males. Although the absolute song output of males did not differ between treatments, males produced more song relative to playback in de-escalation treatments and relative song output was positively correlated with female intrusions. Therefore, female great tits eavesdrop on singing interactions and change their visitation rates to neighbouring territories according to their mate''s singing performance relative to neighbours.  相似文献

Sexually selected traits are often hypothesized to signal malecondition or quality, though empirical evidence is mixed, anda number of alternative models of sexual selection do not requirecondition dependence. We examined the relationship between variousmeasures of condition and dawn songs in male blue tits (Cyanistescaeruleus). We detected 6 largely independent measures of variation(i.e., variables) in these songs. None of these variables wererelated to blue tits' ultraviolet–blue plumage, a demonstratedsexual signal, thus failing to support the redundant signalhypothesis. We found some evidence that the song variables wemeasured signaled male quality. There were correlations betweenbody size and certain song traits, though neither male age normale recapture in the subsequent breeding season (apparent localsurvival) predicted any song variation. We combined our resultswith published effect sizes comparing blue tit song with malequality variables using meta-analysis and found that a few songmeasures are correlates of male quality, though as in our fielddata, neither male age nor survival appeared related to song.Our relatively large sample sizes (>60), combined with ourmeta-analytical integration of 89 effect sizes, make the resultsregarding the signaling value of our measured components ofblue tit song robust. These results demonstrate that 1) onlycertain aspects of signal variation may be condition dependentand 2) even when components of a sexual signal appear correlatedwith condition in some studies, these signal components maybe unrelated or inconsistently related to a variety of conditionindices.  相似文献

Gonadal steroids, most importantly testosterone (T), are considered to be a major factor in the expression of adult song behavior in temperate-zone songbirds. The action of T within specific brain regions involved in the regulation of song may occur either directly, or through its androgenic or estrogenic metabolites. In the present study, we tested steroid-dependence of great tit dawn song by blocking both known pathways of T action by simultaneous implantation of flutamide, an anti-androgen, and ATD, an aromatase inhibitor. By our knowledge, this is the first study investigating the effects of androgen inhibitors on dawn song in free-living birds. Male great tits were implanted during their mate's egg laying stage, being the time of maximal male song activity at dawn. Treatment with ATD and flutamide significantly increased plasma T levels, probably because feedback mechanisms on T secretion were inhibited. The treatment decreased the likelihood of showing dawn song, which is in line with the hypothesis that sex steroids are involved in the endocrine control of song behavior. In males that did show dawn song, we found no evidence for a treatment effect on song quality. Although the implants were present for the larger part of the breeding season, males were able to maintain control of a territory and mate and to complete their brood cycle as successful as control males.  相似文献

Male and female gibbons (Hylobates) produce sexually dimorphic song bouts which appear to serve to guard mates and defend territories respectively. On the basis of differences in both the familiarity and the costs of conflict between sender and receiver, males but not females are hypothesized to use high-energy assessment signals to advertise resource-holding potential. This hypothesis is tested by examining the evidence for differential energy constraints in the production of male and female song bouts across 21 gibbon populations. The results indicate that song performance is reduced when the availability of high-energy foods is reduced and that this effect is greatest in males. Male song bout frequency also declines in populations where the energetic costs of thermoregulation are likely to be greater (i.e. in high-latitude populations). Females do not show this pattern. Females appear to perform the minimum number of songs per bout required for signal transmission and may perform bouts less often when more songs are required. In contrast, males sing for longer periods the more frequently bouts are performed. Overall, these results support the hypothesis that the song bouts of males but not females act as assessment signals. Observational and experimental studies which would provide a more powerful test of this hypothesis are briefly outlined.  相似文献

Costly signals can evolve under sexual selection, as only thosesignals that are difficult to produce and reflect the relativequality of individuals should be important in mate choice. Onesuch signal may be dawn singing behavior in birds. We assessedwhether the song output at dawn of breeding male black-cappedchickadees Parus atricapilhis honestly reflects quality, whererelative quality is assessed by relative dominance rank in winterflocks. Dawn choruses were recorded from 20 male chickadeesfrom 10 flocks during the fertile period of their mates in 1992,1994, and 1995. Dominance ranks of males were assessed by tabulatinginteractions at winter feeders from 1993 to 1995. A comparisonof the dawn singing behavior of the high-ranking and the low-rankingmales from each of the 10 flocks showed that high-ranking malesbegan singing earlier, sang longer, and sang at higher averageand maximum rates than low-ranking flockmates. Age of the maleshad less effect on song output at dawn than rank; older malestended to sing longer dawn choruses, but there was no differencein onset of singing, average song rate, or maximum song rateat dawn between hatch year and after-hatch year males. In animals with internal fertilization, sperm competition among males can favor the evolution of male ejaculate traits that are detrimental to females. Female mating preferences, in contrast, often favor traits in males that are beneficial to females, yet little is known about the effect of these preferences on the evolution of male ejaculates. A necessary condition for female preferences to affect the evolution of male ejaculate characteristics is that females select mates based on a trait correlated with ejaculate quality. Previous work has shown that females of the variable field cricket, Gryllus lineaticeps, prefer males that produce calling songs containing faster and longer chirps. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that females receive more beneficial ejaculates from preferred males. Females were placed on either a high- or a reduced-nutrition diet then mated twice to a male of known song phenotype. Females received only sperm and seminal fluid from males during these matings. There was no effect of male song phenotype on any fitness component for females on the high-nutrition diet. Reduced-nutrition females mated to males that produced preferred song types, however, lived longer, produced more eggs, produced more fertile eggs, and had a higher proportion of their eggs fertilized than those mated to other males. The life-span benefit was positively associated with male chirp duration, and the reproductive benefits were positively associated with male chirp rate. We explored two possible mechanisms for the life span and reproductive benefits. First, a path analysis suggested that part of the effect of male chirp duration on female life span may have been indirect; females mated to males that produced longer chirps showed delayed oviposition, and females that delayed oviposition lived longer. Males that produce longer chirps may thus transfer fewer or less potent oviposition stimulants to females in their seminal fluid. Second, there was a positive correlation between male chirp rate and the number of sperm transferred to females. The fertility benefit may thus have resulted from females receiving more sperm from males that produce faster chirps. Finally, there was a negative phenotypic correlation between male chirp rate and chirp duration, suggesting that females may have to trade off the life span and reproduction benefits when selecting a mate.  相似文献

Males of many songbird species have peaks of singing activity at dawn and dusk. Singing during those twilight periods can function in territory proclamation, and males are suggested to adjust song output to the level of intruder pressure. We used song playback during the breeding season to simulate intrusions into territories of male Winter Wrens (Troglodytes troglodytes) shortly after dawn. We then compared male singing behaviour during the dawn and dusk chorus before and 1 day after the simulated intrusion. One day after the playback, male Wrens increased their song output before sunrise, which confirms our results from a previous study on dawn singing in autumn territories. At dusk, on the evening following the playback, males slightly increased song output after sunset, but singing activity at dusk was generally very low. We found no significant changes of song output after sunrise, before sunset, and between 2 days of control without playback. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that dawn and dusk singing is important for territory defence in spring. Unlike in autumn, however, increased singing in spring at dawn and dusk could also serve to defend other resources such as fertile mates or to strengthen the pair bond after a territorial challenge. In comparison with the results on autumnal singing, male Wrens started singing earlier at dawn during the breeding season, and they generally sang more songs at dawn and immediately after playback. The increase in absolute numbers of songs sung in the morning after playback seemed greater in spring than in autumn; however, the proportional increase relative to overall song output was similar in both seasons.  相似文献

High-quality male Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca (defined by brighter plumage, better condition and more experience) have previously been shown to have larger syllable repertoires and greater song versatility than males of inferior quality. Thus, by preferring more complex songs, females could choose a high-quality male. Females may also use song as a cue to find a high-quality territory since early arriving males may obtain the best territories and these males have more complex songs than late-arriving males. We found that males with more complex songs had a greater chance of becoming paired and stayed unpaired for a shorter period than males with less elaborate songs. When controlling for arrival order, however, only strophe versatility was still correlated with pairing order. Males defending popular territories had more complex and longer songs and were also in better body condition than males in less popular territories. A multiple logistic regression showed that song length was important in explaining whether a male defended a popular nestbox or not. Thus, male arrival time seems to be important in deciding the quality of a male's territory, which in turn explains female choice. However, song quality seems to add important information. Thus, females could find both high-quality males and high-quality territories by using song cues during mate choice.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Many passerine species exhibit a "dawn chorus"—a bout of intense singing activity before or at dawn, but our understanding of this phenomenon is poor. Tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae) exhibit pronounced daily bouts of dawn singing. I documented this behavior in several populations of Buff-breasted Flycatchers ( Empidonax fulvifrons ) in Arizona, tape recording >30,000 songs of 23 individuals during dawn singing. Individual males sang a dawn bout each morning, even during breeding phases when daytime song was almost completely absent. Dawn bouts began 5–10 min before local civil twilight and continued for 25–30 min. Each male possessed two song types delivered at high rates during dawn singing (four times the rate during sustained daytime singing). Song rate varied significantly over the course of dawn bouts, increasing to 55 songs / min at mid-bout, then declining to the end of the bout. Type 2 songs comprised about 30% of songs during dawn singing, and decreased significantly in proportion during the final 10 min of the bout. Songs of the two types were delivered in a nonrandom fashion. Males sang at locations near territory boundaries and pairs of neighbors engaged in counter-singing from the same locations each morning. A number of dawn singing bouts ended with attempted or successful copulations. These observations are consistent with the social dynamics hypothesis for the functional significance of dawn singing in this species.  相似文献

Bird song is a widely used model in the study of sexual selection. Variation in the expression of sexually selected traits is thought to reflect variation in male genetic and/or phenotypic quality. Vocal amplitude is a song parameter that has received little attention in the context of sexual selection, but there is some evidence that the intensity of bird song affects female preferences. Here, we tested whether the amplitude of broadcast song plays a role in male–male competition. We used song playback with varying song amplitude (within the natural amplitude range of the species) and a dummy bird taxidermy to simulate territorial intrusions in the great tit, Parus major, during the fertile period of the female and measured the response of the local male. The results show that playback amplitude significantly affected the subjects’ behaviour: after approaching to within 25 m around the loudspeaker, territorial males stayed longer within that perimeter after the playback of high‐amplitude songs compared with low‐amplitude songs. Our findings add to the small but growing body of evidence suggesting that vocal amplitude may be a sexually selected song trait.  相似文献

We examined different song parameters leading to a complex song configuration, and song output (production), and their relation in male Moustached Warblers and discuss them with reference to female choice. With more than 120 different syllables per two minutes of song, male Moustached Warblers can be regarded as one of the most complex singers within the genus Acrocephalus . We found significant differences between males for almost all song parameters investigated (repertoire size, switching and repetition rate, song speed and strophe length) but not for time spent singing per 20 minutes. This individual variation probably is an important cue for female mate choice. Male Moustached Warblers achieve song complexity mainly via frequent syllable switching. Song complexity seems to be consistent throughout the song and our results suggest that females could assess the overall song complexity of a singer by examining even very short song bouts. Furthermore, a high proportion of motifs – clusters of syllables with the same sequence – occurs within the song of each male which would also facilitate assessment of song complexity by females. However, repertoire size and strophe length were positively related, thus it remains to be investigated which song feature, if any, females actually use.  相似文献

In the majority of songbird species, males have repertoires of multiple song types used for mate attraction and territory defence. The wood‐warblers (family Parulidae) are a diverse family of songbirds in which males of many migratory species use different song types or patterns of song delivery (known as ‘singing modes’) depending on context. The vocal behaviour of most tropical resident warblers remains undescribed, although these species differ ecologically and behaviourally from migratory species, and may therefore differ in their vocal behaviour. We test whether male Rufous‐capped Warblers Basileuterus rufifrons use distinct singing modes by examining song structure and context‐dependent variation in their songs. We recorded multiple song bouts from 50 male Warblers in a Costa Rican population over 3 years to describe seasonal, diel and annual variation in song structure and vocal behaviour. We found that Rufous‐capped Warbler songs are complex, with many syllable types shared both within and between males’ repertoires. Males varied their song output depending on context: they sang long songs at a high rate at dawn and during the breeding season, and shortened songs in the presence of a vocalizing female mate. Unlike many migratory species, Rufous‐capped Warblers do not appear to have different singing modes; they did not change the song variants used or the pattern of song delivery according to time of day, season or female vocal activity. Our research provides the first detailed vocal analysis of any Basileuterus warbler species, and enhances our understanding of the evolution of repertoire specialization in tropical resident songbirds.  相似文献

While a number of studies have measured multivariate sexual selection acting on sexual signals in wild populations, few have confirmed these findings with experimental manipulation. Sagebrush crickets are ideally suited to such investigations because mating imposes an unambiguous phenotypic marker on males arising from nuptial feeding by females. We quantified sexual selection operating on male song by recording songs of virgin and mated males captured from three wild populations. To determine the extent to which selection on male song is influenced by female preference, we conducted a companion study in which we synthesized male songs and broadcast them to females in choice trials. Multivariate selection analysis revealed a saddle‐shaped fitness surface, the highest peak of which corresponded to longer train and pulse durations, and longer intertrain intervals. Longer trains and pulses likely promote greater mate attraction, but selection for longer intertrain durations suggests that energetic constraints may necessitate “time outs”. Playback trials confirmed the selection for longer train and pulse durations, and revealed significant stabilizing selection on dominant frequency, suggesting that the female auditory system is tightly tuned to the species‐specific call frequency. Collectively, our results revealed a complex pattern of multivariate nonlinear selection characterized primarily by strong stabilizing and disruptive selection on male song traits.  相似文献

Song complexity is thought to be a sexually selected trait in passerine birds; however, quantifying relevant parameters of song complexity is the first step in testing the theory that song complexity is a sexually selected trait. We show here that blue grosbeak (Guiraca caerulea) males sing a single song type but the properties of that song type vary between renditions. This pattern of song delivery potentially provides females with an opportunity to assess dimensions of song complexity other then repertoire size. Here we characterize song complexity using four measures: (i) element repertoire size, (ii) proportion of distinct song variant, (iii) song versatility, and (iv) syntax consistency. We studied the functional significance of song complexity by comparing measures of song complexity before and after periods of female fertility. We found that male blue grosbeaks sing more song variants, use more versatile arrangements of elements, and maintain more syntax consistency during the fertile period of their social mate than during their social mate's non‐fertile period. These results point to a functional relationship between changes in song complexity and periods of female fertility in this species.  相似文献

Adult‐directed predation risk elevates costs of parental care, and may modify relationships between sexually selected ornaments and parental effort by accentuating the tradeoff between survival and parental investment. We assessed multiple hypotheses regarding the relationship between maternal effort, paternal effort, and the sexually selected trait of male song complexity in the song sparrow Melospiza melodia. Further, we explored whether experimentally elevating perceived adult‐directed predation risk near nests affected these relationships. We quantified two dimensions of song complexity: song repertoire size and residual syllable number (the relative number of syllables for a given song repertoire size). Under elevated perceived predation risk, but not in the absence of the predator stimuli, females mated to males with higher residual syllable number displayed higher nestling provisioning rates and performed a greater proportion of nestling provisioning trips. In other words, elevating perceived predation risk induced a pattern of maternal investment consistent with differential allocation. In contrast, under elevated perceived predation risk, only, females performed a lesser proportion of provisioning trips when mated to males with large song repertoire sizes. Further, consistent with the good parent hypothesis, males with large song repertoire sizes displayed lower latencies to return to the nest, independent of the predator stimuli. Results suggest that residual syllable number may reflect some aspect of male genetic quality, such that females are more willing to maintain maternal effort while facing heightened predation risk. On the other hand, females may gain paternal benefits when mated to males with large song repertoires. Our study supports the hypothesis that increased costs of parental care associated with predation risk may induce relationships between sexually selected traits and parental behavior, which may increase the strength of sexual selection. Additionally, results suggest that different aspects of song complexity may fulfill non‐equivalent signaling roles.  相似文献
