Plant communities utilize available irradiance with different efficiency depending not only on their photosynthetic characteristics but also on the canopy structure and density. The importance of canopy structure are well studied in terrestrial plant communities but poorly studied in aquatic plant communities. The objective of this study was to evaluate macroalgal community photosynthesis in artificial constructed communities of one to four species with different morphologies along a range of leaf (i.e.=thallus) area densities. In a laboratory set-up we measured net photosynthesis and dark respiration in constructed assemblages of macroalgae, excluding effects other than photosynthesis of individual tissue and distribution of photons in the canopy from influencing metabolism. We hypothezised that 1) canopy structure determines the actual rates of photosynthesis relative to the optimal rates and 2) multi-species communities attain higher maximum photosynthetic rates than single species communities. We found that differences in canopy structure outweighed large differences in tissue photosynthesis resulting in relatively similar maximum community photosynthetic rates among the different single and multi-species assemblages (20.1–40.5 μmol O2 m−2 s−1). Canopy structure influenced community photosynthesis both at low and high leaf area densities because it determines the ability of macroalgae to use the photosynthetic potential of their individual tissues. Due to an averaging effect the photosynthetic rate at high leaf area density was more similar among multi-species community than among single-species communities. Multi-species communities had, on average, a slightly higher photosynthetic production than expected from photosynthesis of single species communities. Moreover multi-species communities were capable of exposing new tissue to irradiance up to high densities thereby avoiding a decrease in net photosynthesis. This finding suggests that multi-species communities may be able to maintain higher biomass per unit ground area than single-species communities.

Rhizophora mangle L., the predominant neotropical mangrove species, occupies a gradient from low intertidal swamp margins with high insolation, to shaded sites at highest high water. Across a light gradient, R. mangle shows properties of both “light-demanding” and “shade-tolerant” species, and defies designation according to existing successional paradigms for rain forest trees. The mode and magnitude of its adaptability to light also change through ontogeny as it grows into the canopy. We characterized and compared phenotypic flexibility of R. mangle seedlings, saplings, and tree modules across changing light environments, from the level of leaf anatomy and photosynthesis, through stem and whole-plant architecture. We also examined growth and mortality differences among sun and shade populations of seedlings over 3 yr. Sun and shade seedling populations diverged in terms of four of six leaf anatomy traits (relative thickness of tissue layers and stomatal density), as well as leaf size and shape, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf internode distances, disparity in blade–petiole angles, canopy spread: height ratios, standing leaf numbers, summer (July) photosynthetic light curve shapes, and growth rates. Saplings showed significant sun/shade differences in fewer characters: leaf thickness, SLA, leaf overlap, disparity in bladepetiole angles, standing leaf numbers, stem volume and branching angle (first-order branches only), and summer photosynthesis. In trees, leaf anatomy was insensitive to light environment, but leaf length, width, and SLA, disparities in bladepetiole angles, and summer maximal photosynthetic rates varied among sun and shade leaf populations. Seedling and sapling photosynthetic rates were significantly depressed in winter (December), while photosynthetic rates in tree leaves did not differ in winter and summer. Seasonal and ontogenetic changes in response to light environment are apparent at several levels of biological organization in R. mangle, within constraints of its architectural baiiplan. Such variation has implications for models of stand carbon gain, and suggest that response flexibility may change with plant age.

The photosynthetic behavior of leaves and twigs was compared in Hymenoclea salsola T. and G., a subshrub of the Mohave and Sonoran deserts, in which both leaves and green twigs make substantial contributions to whole-plant carbon gain. Light saturated photosynthesis in twigs was 0.62 times that of leaves (36.9 μmol m-2 s-1) when plants were well watered. Similar ratios were consistently observed in contrasting the photosynthetic responses of the two organ types to light, temperature, and intercellular CO2, regardless of whether rates were compared under saturating or highly limiting conditions of light or intercellular CO2. These scalar differences in photosynthetic rate between leaves and green twigs under a wide range of conditions were correlated with contrasting anatomical features such as chlorenchyma volume per projected area. Under normal ambient CO2 concentrations (350 μl 1-1), twigs on well watered plants operated at lower intercellular CO2 concentrations than the leaves. Possible causes of this difference are discussed with respect to performance under well-watered conditions, organ lifespans, and contrasting anatomical constraints. Twigs require larger investments than do leaves of both carbon and nitrogen per projected area of the respective organs, yet they realize lower photosynthetic rates per intercepted light. Twigs, however, fulfill additional roles besides photosynthesis such as structural support and vascular transport which does not allow them to be as anatomically specialized as leaves for photosynthesis. Twigs also have a longer expected lifespan than leaves with a larger fraction of them surviving the summer drought period. This was correlated with a greater tolerance of twig than leaf photosynthesis to low plant water potentials.

A model of dynamics of leaves and nitrogen is developed to predict the effect of environmental and ecophysiological factors on the structure and photosynthesis of a plant canopy. In the model, leaf area in the canopy increases by the production of new leaves, which is proportional to the canopy photosynthetic rate, with canopy nitrogen increasing with uptake of nitrogen from soil. Then the optimal leaf area index (LAI; leaf area per ground area) that maximizes canopy photosynthesis is calculated. If leaf area is produced in excess, old leaves are eliminated with their nitrogen as dead leaves. Consequently, a new canopy having an optimal LAI and an optimal amount of nitrogen is obtained. Repeating these processes gives canopy growth. The model provides predictions of optimal LAI, canopy photosynthetic rates, leaf life span, nitrogen use efficiency, and also the responses of these factors to changes in nitrogen and light availability. Canopies are predicted to have a larger LAI and a higher canopy photosynthetic rate at a steady state under higher nutrient and/or light availabilities. Effects of species characteristics, such as photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency and leaf mass per area, are also evaluated. The model predicts many empirically observed patterns for ecophysiological traits across species.

Mathematical models of light attenuation and canopy photosynthesis suggest that crop photosynthesis increases by more uniform vertical irradiance within crops. This would result when a larger proportion of total irradiance is applied within canopies (interlighting) instead of from above (top lighting). These irradiance profiles can be generated by Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). We investigated the effects of interlighting with LEDs on light interception, on vertical gradients of leaf photosynthetic characteristics and on crop production and development of a greenhouse‐grown Cucumis sativus‘Samona’ crop and analysed the interaction between them. Plants were grown in a greenhouse under low natural irradiance (winter) with supplemental irradiance of 221 µmol photosynthetic photon flux m?2 s?1 (20 h per day). In the interlighting treatment, LEDs (80% Red, 20% Blue) supplied 38% of the supplemental irradiance within the canopy with 62% as top lighting by High‐Pressure Sodium (HPS)‐lamps. The control was 100% top lighting (HPS lamps). We measured horizontal and vertical light extinction as well as leaf photosynthetic characteristics at different leaf layers, and determined total plant production. Leaf mass per area and dry mass allocation to leaves were significantly greater but leaf appearance rate and plant length were smaller in the interlighting treatment. Although leaf photosynthetic characteristics were significantly increased in the lower leaf layers, interlighting did not increase total biomass or fruit production, partly because of a significantly reduced vertical and horizontal light interception caused by extreme leaf curling, likely because of the LED‐light spectrum used, and partly because of the relatively low irradiances from above.

Seasonal changes and yearly gross canopy photosynthetic production were estimated for an 18 year old Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis) forest between 1982 and 1984. A canopy photosynthesis model was applied for the estimation, which took into account the effect of light interception by the non-photosynthetic organs. Seasonal changes in photosynthetic ability, amount of canopy leaf area and light environment within the canopy were also taken into account. Amount of leaf area was estimated by the leaf area growth of a single leaf. The change of light environment within the canopy during the growing season was estimated with a light penetration model and the leaf increment within the canopy. Canopy respiration and surplus production were calculated as seasonal and yearly values for the three years studied. Mean yearly estimates of canopy photosynthesis, canopy respiration and surplus production were 37, 13 and 23 tCO2 ha−1 year−1, respectively. Vertical trend, seasonal changes and yearly values of the estimates were analyzed in relation to environmental and stand factors.

Summary We studied the effects of nitrogen supply on growth, allocation, and gas exchange characteristics of two perennial grasses of dry, nutrient-poor inland dunes: Corynephorus canescens (L.) Beauv. and Agrostis vinealis Schreber. C. canescens invests more biomass in leaves and less in roots, but has less leaf area and more root length per unit plant weight than A. vinealis. A. vinealis invests more nitrogen per unit leaf weight, but less per unit leaf area, despite a similar relative nitrogen investment in leaves and plant nitrogen concentration. Between-species differences in the rate of net photosynthesis, transpiration and shoot respiration are positively related to leaf nitrogen content per unit leaf area. The rate of net photosynthesis per unit plant weight is higher for A. vinealis at both levels of nitrogen supply, due to differences in leaf area ratio (LAR), and despite the reverse differences in the rate of net photosynthesis per unit leaf area. The water use efficiency of the two species is similar and increases significantly with an increase in nitrogen supply. The photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency on the other hand is not affected by nitrogen supply, while at both low and high nitrogen supply A. vinealis has a 10% higher photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency than C. canescens.

A suite of functionally-related characters and demography of three species of Neotropical shadeadapted understory shrubs (Psychotria, Rubiaceae) were studied in the field over five years. Plants were growing in large-scale irrigated and control treatments in gaps and shade in old-growth moist forest at Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Irrigation demonstrated that dry-season drought limited stomatal conductance, light saturated photosynthesis, and leaf longevity in all three species. Drought increased mortality of P. furcata. In contrast, irrigation did not affect measures of photosynthetic capacity determined with an oxygen electrode or from photosynthesis-CO2 response curves in the field. Drought stress limited field photosynthesis and leaf and plant survivorship without affecting photosynthetic capacity during late dry season. Leaves grown in high light in naturally occurring treefall gaps had higher photosynthetic capacity, dark respiration and mass per unit area than leaves grown in the shaded understory. P. furcata had the lowest acclimation to high light for all of these characters, and plant mortality was greater in gaps than in shaded understory for this species. The higher photosynthetic capacity of gap-grown leaves was also apparent when photosynthetic capacity was calculated on a leaf mass basis. Acclimation to high light involved repackaging (higher mass per unit leaf area) as well as higher photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf mass in these species. The three species showed two distinct syndromes of functionally-related adaptations to low light. P. limonensis and P. marginata had high leaf longevity (3 years), high plant survivorship, low leaf nitrogen content, and high leaf mass per unit area. In contrast, P. furcata had low leaf survivorship (1 year), high plant mortality (77–96% in 39 months), low leaf mass per unit area, high leaf nitrogen content, and the highest leaf area to total plant mass; the lowest levels of shelf shading, dark respiration and light compensation; and the highest stem diameter growth rates. This suite of characters may permit higher whole-plant carbon gain and high leaf and population turnover in P. furcata. Growth in deep shade can be accomplished through alternative character syndromes, and leaf longevity may not be correlated with photosynthetic capacity in shade adapted plants.

Summary Seasonal measurements of microclimatic conditions were compared to seasonal indices of leaf structural components and plant water relations in Prosopis glandulosa var. torryana. P. glandulosa had two short periods of leaf production which resulted in two distinct even aged cohorts of leaves. The two leaf cohorts (summer, winter) were concurrent in the summer and fall, contrasting to previous studies on other species in which one leaf form replaces a previous leaf type. The structural characteristics of these two cohorts differed significantly in two replicate year cycles. The leaves of the spring cohort were larger in weight and area but similar to the summer cohort in specific leaf weight and leaflet number. The second growth period leaves constituted only a small proportion of the total plant leaf area. The dimorphism between the two cohorts was best associated with plant water relations and not energy load. Second growth period leaves maintained turgor to greater water deficits but lost turgor at higher leaf water potentials. Seasonal osmotic adjustment occurred for first growth period leaves but not second growth period leaves. The small leaves produced during the hot climate were most likely the result of low turgor potential during development rather than an adaptation to tolerate stressful environments.

Elevated CO2 enhances carbon uptake of a plant stand, but the magnitude of the increase varies among growth stages. We studied the relative contribution of structural and physiological factors to the CO2 effect on the carbon balance during stand development. Stands of an annual herb Chenopodium album were established in open-top chambers at ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations (370 and 700 μmol mol−1). Plant biomass growth, canopy structural traits (leaf area, leaf nitrogen distribution, and light gradient in the canopy), and physiological characteristics (leaf photosynthesis and respiration of organs) were studied through the growing season. CO2 exchange of the stand was estimated with a canopy photosynthesis model. Rates of light-saturated photosynthesis and dark respiration of leaves as related with nitrogen content per unit leaf area and time-dependent reduction in specific respiration rates of stems and roots were incorporated into the model. Daily canopy carbon balance, calculated as an integration of leaf photosynthesis minus stem and root respiration, well explained biomass growth determined by harvests (r 2 = 0.98). The increase of canopy photosynthesis with elevated CO2 was 80% at an early stage and decreased to 55% at flowering. Sensitivity analyses suggested that an alteration in leaf photosynthetic traits enhanced canopy photosynthesis by 40–60% throughout the experiment period, whereas altered canopy structure contributed to the increase at the early stage only. Thus, both physiological and structural factors are involved in the increase of carbon balance and growth rate of C. album stands at elevated CO2. However, their contributions were not constant, but changed with stand development.

Development of the Monsi-Saeki theory on canopy structure and function
Hirose T 《Annals of botany》2005,95(3):483-494
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Monsi and Saeki (1953) published the first mathematical model of canopy photosynthesis that was based on the light attenuation within a canopy and a light response of leaf photosynthesis. This paper reviews the evolution and development of their theory. SCOPE: Monsi and Saeki showed that under full light conditions, canopy photosynthesis is maximized at a high leaf area index (LAI, total leaf area per unit ground area) with vertically inclined leaves, while under low light conditions, it is at a low LAI with horizontal leaves. They suggested that actual plants develop a stand structure to maximize canopy photosynthesis. Combination of the Monsi-Saeki model with the cost-benefit hypothesis in resource use led to a new canopy photosynthesis model, where leaf nitrogen distribution and associated photosynthetic capacity were taken into account. The gradient of leaf nitrogen in a canopy was shown to be a direct response to the gradient of light. This response enables plants to use light and nitrogen efficiently, two resources whose supply is limited in the natural environment. CONCLUSION: The canopy photosynthesis model stimulated studies to scale-up from chloroplast biochemistry to canopy carbon gain and to analyse the resource-use strategy of species and individuals growing at different light and nitrogen availabilities. Canopy photosynthesis models are useful to analyse the size structure of populations in plant communities and to predict the structure and function of future terrestrial ecosystems.

Xylella fastidiosa is a xylem‐limited bacterial plant pathogen that causes bacterial leaf scorch in its hosts. Our previous work showed that water stress enhances leaf scorch symptom severity and progression along the stem of a liana, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, infected by X. fastidiosa. This paper explores the photosynthetic gas exchange responses of P. quinquefolia, with the aim to elucidate mechanisms behind disease expression and its interaction with water stress. We used a 2 × 2‐complete factorial design, repeated over two growing seasons, with high and low soil moisture levels and infected and non‐infected plants. In both years, low soil moisture levels reduced leaf water potentials, net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance at all leaf positions, while X. fastidiosa‐infection reduced these parameters at basally located leaves only. Intercellular CO2 concentrations were reduced in apical leaves, but increased at the most basal leaf location, implicating a non‐stomatal reduction of photosynthesis in leaves showing the greatest disease development. This result was supported by measured reductions in photosynthetic rates of basal leaves at high CO2 concentrations, where stomatal limitation was eliminated. Repeated measurements over the summer of 2000 showed that the effects of water stress and infection were progressive over time, reaching their greatest extent in September. By reducing stomatal conductances at moderate levels of water stress, P. quinquefolia maintained relatively high leaf water potentials and delayed the onset of photosynthetic damage due to pathogen and drought‐induced water stress. In addition, chlorophyll fluorescence measurements showed that P. quinquefolia has an efficient means of dissipating excess light energy that protects the photosynthetic machinery of leaves from irreversible photoinhibitory damage that may occur during stress‐induced stomatal limitation of photosynthesis. However, severe stress induced by disease and drought eventually led to non‐stomatal decreases in photosynthesis associated with leaf senescence.

Acer saccharum, Fraxinus americana, Juglans nigra, Acer rubrum, Cornus amomum, and Ulmus americana seedlings were subjected to a soil drying cycle and then rewatered. At frequent intervals during the drying cycle and following rewatering, determinations were made of equilibrium photosynthesis rates, leaf conductances and leaf water potentials. As the drying cycle progressed, leaf water potentials decreased, stomata closed, and rates of transpiration and photosynthesis were reduced. Stomata of the two Acer species initially were more sensitive to water stress than were those of the other species. At low leaf water potentials, stomata of Juglans and Cornus were more open than those of the other species. Photosynthesis of Acer saccharum, Fraxinus and Juglans was significantly reduced by plant water stress, while photosynthetic water use efficiency of Cornus and Juglans was most unfavourable. Photosynthesis/leaf conductance ratios in water stressed leaves were higher in Fraxinus than in the other species. Immediately after rewatering, only limited stomatal opening occurred in Acer saccharum and Cornus with recovery of stomatal opening most protracted in Fraxinus and Ulmus. There was extended reduction of photosynthesis of all species as a result of the soil drying treatment. This effect was most significant in Acer saccharum and Juglans. Survival of plants on moist and dry sites is discussed in relation to stomatal control of transpiration and metabolic responses to water stress. Models have been formulated for monospecific stands in which canopy photosynthesis is determined by the vertical distribution of leaf area, nitrogen and light. In such stands, resident plants can maximize canopy photosynthesis by distributing their nitrogen parallel to the light gradient, with high contents per unit leaf area at the top of the vegetation and low contents at the bottom. Using principles from game theory, we expanded these models by introducing a second species into the vegetation, with the same vertical distribution of biomass and nitrogen as the resident plants but with the ability to adjust its specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area:leaf mass). The rule of the game is that invaders replace the resident plants if they have a higher plant carbon gain than those of the resident plants. We showed that such invaders induce major changes in the vegetation. By increasing their SLA, invading plants could increase their light interception as well as their photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency (PNUE, the rate of photosynthesis per unit organic nitrogen). By comparison with stands in which canopy photosynthesis is maximized, those invaded by species of high SLA have the following characteristics: (1) the leaf area index is higher; (2) the vertical distribution of nitrogen is skewed less; (3) as a result of the supra-optimal leaf area index and the more uniform distribution of nitrogen, total canopy photosynthesis is lower. Thus, in dense canopies we face a classical tragedy of the commons: plants that have a strategy to maximize canopy carbon gain cannot compete with those that maximize their own carbon gain. However, because of this strategy, individual as well as total canopy carbon gain are eventually lower. We showed that it is an evolutionarily stable strategy to increase SLA up to the point where the PNUE of each leaf is maximized.

Question: Do thick‐twigged/large‐leaf species have an advantage in leaf display over their counterparts, and what are the effects of leaf habit and leaf form on the leaf‐stem relationship in plant twigs of temperature broadleaf woody species? Location: Gongga Mountain, southwest China. Methods: (1) We investigated stem cross‐sectional area and stem mass, leaf area and leaf/lamina mass of plant twigs (terminal branches of current‐year shoots) of 89 species belonging to 55 genera in 31 families. (2) Data were analyzed to determine leaf‐stem scaling relationships using both the Model type II regression method and the phylogenetically independent comparative (PIC) method. Results: (1) Significant, positive allometric relationships were found between twig cross‐sectional area and total leaf area supported by the twig, and between the cross‐sectional area and individual leaf area, suggesting that species with large leaves and thick twigs could support a disproportionately greater leaf area for a given twig cross‐sectional area. (2) However, the scaling relationships between twig stem mass and total leaf area and between stem mass and total lamina mass were approximately isometric, which indicates that the efficiency of deploying leaf area and lamina mass was independent of leaf size and twig size. The results of PIC were consistent with these correlations. (3) The evergreen species were usually smaller in total leaf area for a given twig stem investment in terms of both cross‐sectional area and stem mass, compared to deciduous species. Leaf mass per area (LMA) was negatively associated with the stem efficiency in deploying leaf area. (4) Compound leaf species could usually support a larger leaf area for a given twig stem mass and were usually larger in both leaf size and twig size than simple leaf species. Conclusions: Generally, thick‐twigged/large‐leaf species do not have an advantage over their counterparts in deploying photosynthetic compartments for a given twig stem investment. Leaf habit and leaf form types can modify leaf‐stem scaling relationships, possibly because of contrasting leaf properties. The leaf size‐twig size spectrum is related to the LMA‐leaf life span dimension of plant life history strategies.

Summary A model of daily canopy photosynthesis was constructed taking light and leaf nitrogen distribution in the canopy into consideration. It was applied to a canopy of Solidago altissima. Both irradiance and nitrogen concentration per unit leaf area decreased exponentially with increasing cumulative leaf area from the top of the canopy. The photosynthetic capacity of a single leaf was evaluated in relation to irradiance and nitrogen concentration. By integration, daily canopy photosynthesis was calculated for various canopy architectures and nitrogen allocation patterns. The optimal pattern of nitrogen distribution that maximizes the canopy photosynthesis was determined. Actual distribution of leaf nitrogen in the canopy was more uniform than the optimal one, but it realized over 20% more photosynthesis than that under uniform distribution and 4.7% less photosynthesis than that under the optimal distribution. Redeployment of leaf nitrogen to the top of the canopy with ageing should be more effective in increasing total canopy photosynthesis in a stand with a dense canopy than in a stand with an open canopy.

Summary Leaf orientation (azimuth and angle) and leaf curling were measured seasonally and diurnally on Rhododendron maximum L. under an evergreen and a deciduous canopy. The microclimatic conditions under the evergreen canopy (mixed pine and hemlock) were characterized by lower irradiance but similar temperature, and vapor pressure deficit (vpd) to that under the deciduous canopy (mixed oak and maple). Under both canopies irradiance was more intense during winter months. On a seasonal basis leaf angle was closer to horizontal under the evergreen canopy but there was no difference between leaf curling in the two sites. Stomatal conductance was higher under the deciduous canopy but stomata were closed in the winter (following canopy abscission) under the evergreen and deciduous canopies even during warm winter days. Leaf water potentials were lower in the winter and Rhododendron maximum had higher leaf water potentials under the evergreen canopy.Significant association between mean leaf angle and curling index were found above a mean leaf angle of 70°. Leaf curling was highly associated with leaf temperature where 0° C was a critical value stimulating leaf curling. Leaf angle was linearly related to leaf temperatures above 0° C although this relationship was different under the two canopy types as a result of differing irradiance or differing water potential.
