The gross and microscopic anatomy of epidermal glands has been studied in laboratory maintained tokays (Gekko gecko), and house geckos (Hemidactylus bowringii) captured from the wild throughout the year. Annual testicular activity in the house gecko has also been studied. While no significant differences in glandular development at various times have been observed in G. gecko, there are clear-cut annual cycles in H. bowringii. The evolution of epidermal glands in gekkonid lizards is reviewed; the cellular dynamics of beta-glands are compared with those of unspecialized epidermis; the possibility that gekkonine epidermal glands respond to quantitative variation in circulating testosterone titers is discussed.  相似文献

Young, B.A. 2000. The comparative morphology of the larynx in snakes. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 81 : 177–193 The larynx and glottal tube were examined in 10 specimens each of 22 snake species. Qualitative analysis through dissection and clearing and staining revealed distinct morphological variation in the cartilage and intrinsic musculature of the larynx. Quantitative analysis of nine morphometric characters revealed laryngeal sexual dimorphism in three species, significant interspecific differences in the coefficients for every morphometric feature regressed on body size, no significant intraspecific differences in the log transformed means, and poor discrimination of species using principal component analysis. The observed variations in laryngeal morphology did not correlate with the phylogeny of the species, or with habitat preferences.  相似文献

The pseudotympanum, a reduction of the hypaxialis muscle in the body wall lateral to the anterior portion of the swim bladder, is unique to some members of the Otophysi, the largest clade of primarily freshwater fishes. Prior studies documented the presence of the pseudotympanum in a number of groups within the Characiformes, to a lesser extent in subunits of the Siluriformes, and in a few taxa of the Cypriniformes, but with only one record of the aperture in the Gymnotiformes – the Neotropical electric fishes. Surveys across the five families and c. two‐thirds of the genera in the Gymnotiformes revealed the occurrence of a pseudotympanum in all examined taxa. Pronounced variation in the expanse and details of the morphology of the opening and its relationship to the anterior elements of the axial skeleton was documented amongst Neotropical electric fish. Details of pseudotympanal morphology in the different families of the Gymnotiformes are described and the variation evaluated within the context of the two alternative hypotheses of higher‐level phylogenetic relationships within the order. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

The comparison of published data on clonal morphology of closely related species and/or data on comparative morphology of larger groups of related species showed that most of the variation observed is more related to history than to putative selection pressures within present plant communities. Historical factors include both phylogeny and climatic conditions experienced in the past. Inheritance of clonal growth traits is variable even within one genus and is hard to predict namely in polyploid groups. Community parameters and architectural traits may be closely related in the case of hybrid speciation when the divergence of newly formed taxa may be very rapid and easily influenced by short term community parameters; however there are very few well documented examples.  相似文献

The extended gestation of fully developed embryos in viviparous reptiles can be the consequence of a lack of appropriate environmental conditions and/or an adaptive contribution to increased offspring viability. I examined the cause and effects of extended gestation in a gekkonid lizard Hoplodactylus maculatus , which delays parturition of developed embryos for up to 9 months from autumn into a second spring. Comparisons of microhabitat temperatures showed that thermal opportunities were equally conducive to birth in autumn and spring. The responsiveness of females to a hormonal stimulant for parturition also did not differ between these seasons. Multiple offspring traits were measured, including body size, locomotory ability and lipid reserves, and were found not to increase with extended gestation. Incorporating these results with previously published evidence for microhabitat thermal variation, I discuss whether delayed parturition may be an adaptive mechanism maintained by the selective pressures of an uncertain thermal environment on components of reproduction, including vitellogenesis, maternal birthing cues and neonatal survival.  相似文献

In this study I documented the degree of specialization in the pollination systems of Burmeistera cyclostigmata and B. tenuiflora (Campanulaceae) to explore the potential role of floral isolation in the diversification of the genus. I asked which floral characteristics are important in specializing on either bat or hummingbird pollination, and whether overlap between these floral syndromes can exist. I examined nocturnal and diurnal pollen deposition, pollinator visitation rates, and single visit effectiveness and related them to intra- and interspecific variation in Burmeistera floral characteristics at Monteverde, Costa Rica. Bats and hummingbirds visited both Burmeistera species, and bats pollinated both species. Owing to differences in floral morphology, however, hummingbirds effectively pollinated only B. tenuiflora. The generalized pollination system of B. tenuiflora demonstrates that there can be overlap in the boundary between ornithophily and chiropterophily, and that nectar production and timing of anthesis do not serve as barriers between these syndromes. The high intraspecific variation in floral color from green to red or purple did not correlate with either nocturnal or diurnal pollen deposition. Degree of flower accessibility did affect pollination; nocturnal pollen deposition significantly decreased as flowers become more obstructed. In Burmeistera, floral morphology and accessibility appear to be the most important floral characteristics for specialization at the boundary between ornithophily and chiropterophily.  相似文献

This paper represents the first study of the morphology of the upper lip (labrum) and hypostome of ostracods using scanning electron microscopy (S.E.M.). There is considerable variation in the upper lip morphology of the 23 species of Cypridoidea (Podocopina) ostracods used in this study. The detail of the upper lip morphology of each species is very distinctive, so that species determination can be made on this feature alone, but it is not useful in diagnosing genera or subfamilies. The hypostome is not readily studied due to the large amounts of dense pseudochaetae (small, setae-like projections) protruding from it and hence is considered not to be a useful taxonomic feature. Several features of the upper lip and mouth region are documented for the first time. Comparisons of the general morphology of the upper lips of Recent ostracods with the upper lip of the fossil ostracod Pattersoncypris micropapillosa Bate, 1972, indicate that there has been very conservative evolution in these features since the Cretaceous.  相似文献

Pigs are frequently anaesthetized in animal research settings. Due to the unique laryngeal anatomy, endotracheal intubation is demanding in pigs. Several complications associated with endotracheal intubation have been reported in pigs, but laryngeal perforation following difficult intubation has not been documented so far. 1. The competitive interactions of closely related species have long been considered important determinants of community composition and a major cause of phenotypic diversification. However, while patterns such as character displacement are well documented, less is known about how local adaptation influences diversifying selection from interspecific competition. 2. We examined body size and head shape variation among allopatric and sympatric populations of two salamander species, the widespread Plethodon cinereus and the geographically restricted P. nettingi. We quantified morphology from 724 individuals from 20 geographical localities throughout the range of P. nettingi. 3. Plethodon nettingi was more robust in cranial morphology relative to P. cinereus, and sympatric localities were more robust relative to allopatric localities. Additionally, there was significantly greater sympatric head shape divergence between species relative to allopatric communities, and sympatric localities of P. cinereus exhibited greater morphological variation than sympatric P. nettingi. 4. The sympatric morphological divergence and increase in cranial robustness of one species (P. nettingi) were similar to observations in other Plethodon communities, and were consistent with the hypothesis of interspecific competition. These findings suggest that interspecific competition in Plethodon may play an important role in phenotypic diversification in this group. 5. The increase in among-population variance in sympatric P. cinereus suggests a species-specific response to divergent natural selection that is influenced in part by other factors. We hypothesize that enhanced morphological flexibility and ecological tolerance allow P. cinereus to more rapidly adapt to local environmental conditions, and initial differences among populations have allowed the evolutionary response of P. cinereus to vary across replicate sympatric locations, resulting in distinct evolutionary trajectories of morphological change.  相似文献

The morphology of the radial carpal bone (os carpi radiale) of neornithine birds is for the first time evaluated in a comparative context. An unexpected morphological variation of this bone is documented, and characteristic derived morphologies are identified. One of these characterizes a subclade of Accipitridae, which includes the taxa Harpiinae, Circinae, Melieraxinae, Accipitrinae, Milvinae, Haliaeetinae, Buteoninae, and Aquilinae. Another derived morphology of the radial carpal is found in the Picocoraciae, the clade including Coraciiformes sensu stricto, Alcediniformes, Bucerotes, and Piciformes. This latter morphology is absent in Leptosomidae and Trogonidae and constitutes the first morphological apomorphy of Picocoraciae. A distinctive morphology of the radial carpal is further present in passeriform birds. Character variation of the radial carpal provides new data for the evaluation of conflicting phylogenetic hypotheses, and it is detailed that the morphology of this bone further contributes to a phylogenetic placement of controversial avian taxa in the fossil record.  相似文献

Within Australia, the gekkonid lizard Heteronotia binoei exists as diploid bisexual and triploid all-female populations. Three bisexual cytotypes and three triploid clones can be described on the basis of the morphology of gross karyotypes. This paper reports the results of a C-banding analysis that revealed both intrapopulation polymorphism and interpopulation polytypic variation within the most widespread bisexual cytotype (A6). A C-band variant that defined a ZW sex chromosome system in populations from the MacDonnell Ranges in central Australia was also identified. Silver staining confirmed that in all populations the nucleolus organising region always occurred distally on chromosome 6. Examination of C-banding and silver-staining patterns of triploid populations provided strong support for a hybrid origin of the parthenogens that involved the central and western A6 populations. It is proposed that the hybridisation of these populations with the other chromosomally distinct bisexual cytotypes (SM6) resulted in the triploid clones. At present, seven clones have been karyotypically defined, and all the chromosomal variants that were present in the triploids can be accounted for by multiple hybridisation events between the bisexual populations. The analysis also provided evidence that rare sterile tetraploid females are the result of insemination of the triploid parthenogens by male H. binoei. This paper is dedicated to the memory of M.J.D. Sperm length is extremely variable across species, but a general explanation for this variation is lacking. However, when the risk of sperm competition is high, sperm length is predicted to be less variable within species, and there is some evidence for this in birds and social insects. Here, we examined intraspecific variation in sperm length, both within and between males, and its potential associations with sperm competition risk and variation in female reproductive tract morphology across dung flies. We used two measures of variation in sperm size, and testis size was employed as our index of sperm competition risk. We found no evidence of associations between sperm length variation and sperm competition or female reproductive tract variation. These results suggest that variation in sperm competition risk may not always be associated with variation in sperm morphology, and the cause(s) of sperm length variation in dung flies remains unclear.  相似文献

Foliar extracts of high elevation Quercus rubra contain 20 major flavonol-3-0-glycosides based primarily on the aglycones myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol. These compounds display an altitudinal cline in the Appalachian mountains, with quercetin-rich low elevation chemotypes intergrading into myricetin-rich high elevation forms. These chemotypes appear to be correlated with previously documented variation in foliar morphology. The degree of interpopulation variation also differs with elevation. At higher elevations flavonoids differ only quantitatively between sites, while below 3,000 ft there is site-to-site variability in the hydroxylation level of the aglycones.  相似文献

Several recent studies have focused on the ability of the gekkonid Ptychozoon lionatum to parachute, utilizing its enlarged lateral body folds. Little attention has been paid, however, to the evolution of such behavious and here several aspects pertaining to the origin of parachuting are integrated. Behavioural shifts and morphological modifications are considered together and evaluated in the light of ecological information. It is apparent that certain behavioural shifts were the precursors of subsequent morphological changes. The structural design of the body folds is also considered in relation to parachuting behaviour and both the gross morphology and histology are shown to be significantly modified to permit effective parachuting. The absene of musculature in the lateral body flaps of geckos is confirmed and a model for the integration of the various factors involved in effective parachuting is presented. Here the importance of the "structure-function" and "habitat-behaviour" sets are emphasized together with their new interrelationships when a protoadaptation becomes functional.  相似文献

The squamates are composed of many taxa, among which there is morphological variation in the vomeronasal organ (VNO). To elucidate the evolution of chemoreception in squamate reptiles, morphological data from the VNO from a variety of squamate species is required. In this study, the morphology of the VNO of the grass lizard Takydromus tachydromoides was examined using light and electron microscopy. The VNO consists of a pair of dome-shaped structures, which communicate with the oral cavity. There are no associated glandular structures. Microvilli are present on the apical surfaces of receptor cells in its sensory epithelium, as well as on supporting cells, and there are centrioles and ciliary precursor bodies on the dendrites. In addition to ciliated cells and basal cells in the non-sensory epithelium, there is a novel type of non-ciliated cell in T. tachydromoides. They have constricted apical cytoplasm and microvilli instead of cilia, and are sparsely distributed in the epithelium. Based on these results, the variation in the morphology of the VNO in scincomorpha, a representative squamate taxon, is discussed.  相似文献

A karyotypic survey of the gekkonid lizard Gehyra purpurascens revealed a distinctive sex chromosome system. G-banding showed that the Z Chromosome of males is derived from a tandem fusion of two acrocentric chromosomes of a presumed ancestral Gehyra with 2n=44. Through the application of G-; N- and C-banding, a total of six morphs of the W chromosome were identified. These differ by paracentric and pericentric inversions and, in one case, by a centric shift. The possible reasons for such extensive variation in the W chromosome are considered, and it is suggested that increased mutability of the W chromosome may be a causal factor. In contrast to earlier speculations, this example demonstrates that sex chromosomes can evolve without significant changes in the amount of C-band heterochromatin.  相似文献

The abdominal escutcheon, and certain aspects of pre-anal organ morphology, have been studied in Sphaerodactylus spp. and Gekko vittatus respectively. These epidermal modifications are male characteristics. The sphaerodactyline escutcheon becomes larger by the peripheral addition of specialized scales with increasing size of the individuals: this relationship is much more clearcut in S. cinereus than in the notatus species group (sensu Shreves, '68), and the possible reasons for this are discussed. The number of pre-anal organs varies between populations of G. vittatus, but within populations remains constant throughout life. Individual organs increase steadily in size throughout life. These data are discussed with reference to current interpretations of gekkonid gland evolution, and of factors controlling epidermal cell proliferation and differentiation.  相似文献

While morphological variation across geographical clines has been well documented, it is often unclear whether such changes enhance individual performance to local environments. We examined whether the damselfish Acanthochromis polyacanthus display functional changes in swimming phenotype across a 40-km cline in wave-driven water motion on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. A. polyacanthus populations displayed strong intraspecific variation in swimming morphology and performance that matched local levels of water motion: individuals on reefs subject to high water motion displayed higher aspect-ratio fins and faster swimming speeds than conspecifics on sheltered reefs. Remarkably, intraspecific variation within A. polyacanthus spanned over half the diversity seen among closely related damselfish species from the same region. We find that local selection driven by wave-induced abiotic stress is an overarching ecological mechanism shaping the inter- and intraspecific locomotor diversity of coral reef fishes.  相似文献

The sexually dimorphic vocal characteristics of Rana pipiens release calls suggest that there may be differences in the anatomical components of the larynx. The volumes of the arytenoid cartilage, surrounding muscle masses, vocal cords, supporting bronchial process, and the release-call amplitudes of six males and five females were measured in same-sized animals and sexual differences assessed. No qualitative differences in laryngeal morphology were observed, but all features measured except vocal cords were significantly larger in males. The implications of an increased laryngeal size are discussed in relation to differences previously observed in the vocalizations of this and other species and in relation to prior suggestions regarding the developmental basis of anuran sexual dimorphisms.  相似文献
