Phytoplankton ecology in an Antarctic lake   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
SUMMARY. The ecology of the phytoplankton of Heywood Lake, Signy Island, South Orkney Islands, Antarctica was investigated during 1969–72. The lake, which is ice-covered for 8–10 months per year, is moderately eutrophic due to enrichment by seal excreta.
The annual cycle of the phytoplankton is described. During the winter (approximately May-September), very few algal cells could be detected in the water column and 14C fixation was below measurable limits. In spring (October-November), a rapidly-growing population of algae caused a large increase in the chlorophyll- a concentration (maximum value 170 mg m−2) but carbon fixation remained low, with values <500 mg C m−2 day−1. The algae contributing to this peak were mainly small chlorophytes and chrysophytes. The summer open-water period (December-March) was characterized by a different phytoplankton population dominated by cryptophytes. Chlorophyll levels were lower ( c . 40 mg m−2) but 14C fixation rates >3 g C m−2 day−1 were measured on bright days. Values for Assimilation Number were very high (maximum value 10.5 mg C h−1 mg−1 (chlorophyll- a ) in January (1971) though temperatures never exceeded 8°C. In autumn, the phytoplankton regressed to winter levels. Both spring and summer algal populations probably overwinter as resting stages.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Studies were conducted in Zimbabwe of the catch of Glossina pallidipes Austen from an electric net plus target baited with mixtures of acetone plus carbon dioxide or 1-octen-3-ol (octenol) plus carbon dioxide. For acetone dispensed alone at 5–50, 000 mg h-1, ten-fold increments in the dose increased the catch 1.7 times. For carbon dioxide dispensed alone, dose increments from 12 to 1201 h-1 doubled the catch, but the catch was not further increased by dispensing carbon dioxide at 600–1200 1 h-1. For mixtures of these two odours, ten-fold increments in the dose of carbon dioxide between 12 and 12, 0001 h-1 increased the catch c . 2.5 times if acetone was also dispensed at >50 mg h-1; changes in the dose of acetone between 50 and 50 000 mg h-1 did not affect the catch. The addition of octenol (0.05 mg h-1) to carbon dioxide (12–12001 h-1) doubled the catch. Ten-fold increments in the dose of octenol between 0.05 and 5 mg h-1 did not increase the catch significantly and the catch was independent of changes in the dose of carbon dioxide between 120 and 12001 h-1. The behavioural basis of the dose-response curves was investigated using an incomplete ring of electric nets to assess the flight orientation of tsetse in different odours. Upwind flight was not elicited by acetone or octenol alone, or by carbon dioxide unless it was at very high doses, however, mixtures of carbon dioxide with acetone or octenol elicited upwind flight. It is suggested that the attractiveness of mixtures of acetone and carbon dioxide is a function of the region of overlap of these two odours at above threshold concentration. Acetone and octenol on their own appear to increase the responsiveness of flies to visual cues.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Dissolved ATP, defined as ATP which passes through 0.2 μm filters, was found in fresh water. During the spring diatom bloom in two eutrophic Danish lakes, concentrations of dissolved ATP varied between 0.1 and 3.8 μgl−1, constituting 14–76% of the total ATP (particulate plus dissolved ATP). The kinetics of the light emission obtained from mixing firefly enzyme with dissolved ATP demonstrated that the major proportion of the dissolved ATP was in fact ATP. Despite some variations, the seasonal changes in dissolved ATP paralleled the changes in the increasing phytoplankton population during the rise of the diatom blooms. The dissolved ATP increased after the diatom peak, indicating that release of ATP from the phytoplankton due to mortality may be a major source of dissolved ATP.
Consumption of dissolved ATP was evaluated in uptake experiments using 3H-ATP. Rates of uptake of 3H-ATP by micro-organisms (diameter 0.2–0.6 μm) proved to be close to the rates for 3H-D-glucose uptake. The variations in 3H-ATP uptake during the diatom blooms showed non-systematic changes and ranged between 1.0 and 15.8% h−1 (mean = 4.9% h−1) of the quantity added. Turnover rates for dissolved ATP varied between 12 and 730 ng l−1 h−1 (mean = 175 ng l−1). These rather high rates of turnover suggest that dissolved ATP is an important compound in the metabolism of freshwater bacteria.  相似文献

Vertical distribution of primary production and phytoplankton was studied in a polyhumic brownwater lake and in an oligo-mesohumic lake. During summer both lakes were thermally, chemically and biologically stratified. In the brownwater lake primary production was restricted to the uppermost layer of 1–1.5 m of epilimnion. In the oligo-mesohumic lake noticeable primary production was detected down to depths of 2–3 m. The ice-free period primary production was about 20% higher in the oligo-mesohumic lake, though occasionally the surface production was 2–3 times higher in the brownwater lake. Epilimnetic total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations were higher in the brownwater lake, while nitrate-nitrite, ammonium and phosphate concentrations were very low in both lakes.
Phytoplankton was confined to the uppermost productive layer in the brownwater lake. In the oligo-mesohumic lake phytoplankton was distributed more evenly, though the mean maximum biomass was at the depth of 3–4 m. Below the oxic water layer biomass decreased abruptly in both lakes. In the oligo-mesohumic lake chlorophyll concentration was extremely high (max. 320 mg chl a m−3) in the anoxic hypolimnion, due to green sulphus bacteria.
Flagellated chlorophytes and thrysophytes dominated in the brownwater lake; in spring Chlamydomonas species, followed by Mallomonas caudata . In the oligo-mesohumic lake small coccal green algae, such as Oocystis, Scenedesmus and Westella -like species, dominated in mid-summer, and chrysophytes and cryptomonads in autumn.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption rates during embryonic and the first 38 days of larval development of the striped mullet were measured at 24° C by differential respirometry. Measurements were obtained at the blastula, gastrula and four embryonic stages, and at the yolk-sac, preflexion, flexion and post-flexion larval stages.
Oxygen uptake rates of eggs increased linearly from 0.024 μl O2 per egg h-1 (0·323 μl O2 mg-1 dry wt h-1) by blastulae to 0·177 μlO2 per egg h-1 (2·516 μlO2mg 1dry wth-1) by embryos prior to hatching. Respiration rates did not vary significantly among four salinities (20,25, 30, 35%0).
Larval oxygen consumption increased in a curvilinear manner from 0·243 μl O2 per larva h-1 shortly after hatching to 18·880 μl O2 per larva h-1 on day 38. Oxygen consumption varied in direct proportion to dry weight. Mass-specific oxygen consumption rates of preflexion, flexion, and postflexion larvae did not change with age (10·838 μl O2 mg 1dry wt h-1).
Larval oxygen consumption rates did not vary significantly among salinities 10–35%. Acute temperature increases elicited significant increases in oxygen consumption, these being relatively greater in yolk-sac larvae ( Q10 = 2·75) than in postflexion larvae ( Q10 = 1·40).  相似文献

Drinking rate, uptake of bacteria and microalgae in turbot larvae   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The drinking rate of turbot larvae increased from 14 to 120 nl larva-1 h-1 from day 2 to 11 after hatching, which gave a slightly increased specific drinking rate (calculated per biomass) from day 2 to 7 (0·8–1·9 nl μg carbon-1 h-1. The clearance rate of both algae and bacteria was 10–100 times higher than the drinking rate, which indicated that the larvae had an active uptake of both algae and bacteria. On day 2 and 4 after hatching highest clearance rate was observed for Tetraselmis sp. On day 6 about the same clearance rate was observed for bacteria, Isochrysis galbana and Tetraselmis sp. Until day 4 the turbot larvae had a higher ingestion rate of Tetraselmis sp. than of I. galbana , whereas on day 6 the rates were similar (28–41 ng carbon larvae-1 h-1). The assimilation efficiency was somewhat higher for I. galbana than for Tetraselmis sp., and on day 6 the assimilated algae constituted 1·5 and 0·9% of the larval biomass for I. galbana and Tetraselmis sp., respectively.  相似文献

1. The underwater light climate and benthic moss communities of Grane Langsø were investigated in May 1997 to determine the potential effects on benthic production of changing water column attenuation and spectral quality of light.
2. A reduction in water clarity in the lake since the 1960s was manifested as a marked increase in the attenuation of blue light, relative to red light, which can be attributed to increased dissolved organic carbon.
3. The biomass of the benthic moss community ranged from a maximum of 195 gDW m−2 at a depth of 4 m to 39 g DW m−2 at a depth of 10 m and Drepanocladus exannulatus contributed 70% of the biomass at all depths.
4. Absorption of PAR by D. exannulatus was maximal in the highly pigmented youngest parts of the plant and these correspondingly showed the highest rates of net photosynthesis. The absolute amount of chlorophyll- a per g dry weight was greater at 10 m than 2 m, but the ratio of accessory pigments to chlorophyll- a did not change. Deep growing plants did not show adaptation to changed light quality.
5. Increased attenuation of blue light and the resultant overall decrease in water clarity is likely to impact negatively on net annual production of benthic macrophytes of Grane Langsø. Any further increase in dissolved organic carbon concentration has the potential to markedly decrease the depth to which mosses grow by reducing the length of time in a year during which net photosynthesis occurs.  相似文献

Bacterial utilization of photosynthetically fixed dissolved organic carbon (PDOC) released from natural phytoplankton assemblages was studied in two small, extremely humic, forest lakes in southern Finland. Bacterial activity (measured as uptake of 14C-glucose) and phytoplankton photosynthesis (measured as light uptake of 14CO2) could be most effectively separated using Nuclepore filters of pore size 1–2 μm. Released PDOC was 10–67% of total phytoplankton carbon fixation during in situ experiments, and represented about 0.1% of total DOC. Net uptake of PDOC by bacteria was found to be about 20% during 24 hour laboratory incubations, although about 40% of PDOC present at the start of an experiment could be utilized by bacteria during a 24 hour period. PDOC does not provide a quantitatively important substrate supply for bacterial respiration in humic forest lakes.  相似文献

Curvularia lunata var. aeria was grown on yeast extract, peptone and carboxymethylcellulose (YPC) medium for the production of extracellular rifamycin oxidase. The enzyme was partially purified through a Sephadex G-75 column. The half lives of rifamycin oxidase at 30° and 40°C were 9 d and 100 min, respectively. The activation and deactivation energies of the partially purified enzyme, calculated from Arrhenius plots, were 5.80 and 35.10 kcal mol-1 respectively. The enzyme exhibited a K m (rifamycin B) value of 0.67 mmol l-1 and a V max of 11 μmol h-1 ml. Three metal ions, Fe2+, Ag+ and Hg2+, inhibited the enzyme in the 10–20 mmol l-1 metal ion concentration range. Catalytic activity was not affected by the chelating agent, EDTA.  相似文献

We recently reported the first molecular genetic evidence that Dictyostelium Ca2+ responses to chemoattractants include a contribution from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) – responses are enhanced in mutants lacking calreticulin or calnexin, two major Ca2+-binding proteins in the ER, even though the influx of Ca2+ into the mutants is reduced. Compared with wild-type cells, the ER in the mutants contributes at least 30–70 nM additional Ca2+ to the responses. Here we report that this additional ER contribution to the cytosolic Ca2+ signal depends upon extracellular Ca2+– it does not occur in the absence of extracellular Ca2+, increases to a maximum as the extracellular Ca2+ levels rise to 10 μM and then remains constant at extracellular Ca2+ concentrations up to at least 250 μM. These results suggest that Ca2+ influx causes the intracellular release, in the simplest scenario by a mechanism involving Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release from the ER. By way of contrast, we show that Ca2+ responses to mechanical stimulation are reduced, but still occur in the absence of extracellular Ca2+. Unlike the responses to chemoattractants, mechanoresponses thus include contributions from the ER that are independent of extracellular Ca2+.  相似文献

Abstract: The rates of ingestion of bacteria and of accumulation of bacterial biomass by hungry Pteridomonas danica and Paraphysomonas imperforata were measured using dual radioactive-labelled bacteria in experiments lasting 4–8 h. Pteridomonas continuously consumed 4–5 bacteria h−1 throughout experiments lasting 8 h, irrespective of bacterial concentration above a threshold of about 5 × 105 bacteria ml−1, and continued to catch bacteria even below this density. The clearance rate of about 1 nl cell−1 h−1 at higher bacterial concentrations increased three or four times as bacterial numbers fell. Paraphysomonas cells, with only half the biomass of Pteridomonas , ingested up to 10 bacteria h−1 at high bacterial concentrations, and gradually reduced the feeding rate, effectively ceasing to feed at 106 bacteria ml−1; their initial clearance rate of 1–2.5 nl cell−1 h−1 subsequently fell as low as 0.1 nl cell−1 h−1. Estimation of feeding rate by extrapolation from short-term experiments on such flagellates requires extreme caution. These flagellates, starved to levels typical of the natural environment, accumulated ingested bacterial biomass at an efficiency of between 16 and 21%, indicating that in nature they would recycle 80% or more of the nutrients contained in their food.  相似文献

The major objective of these studies was to assess the extent of the flow of released dissolved organic carbon (RDOC) from phytoplankton to heterotrophic bacteria. The second aim was to test Nalewajko and Schindler's (1976) hypothesis that the percentage of extracellular release (PER) of RDOC by phytoplankton is higher in oligotrophic than eutrophic waters. The studies on the relationship between the bacterial assimilation of RDOC and productivity of phytoplankton in the lakes of different trophy have shown a direct correlation. It was observed that higher utilization rate of phytoplankton RDOC occurred in lakes with higher primary production. The inverse relationship between productivity of lakes, i.e. trophy of waters, and amount of RDOC or PER is closely dependent on the heterotrophic activity of bacteria in waters.  相似文献

A phytoplankton investigation was carried out in the subalpine, low-productive Norwegian lake Øvre Heimdalsvatn in 1969–70 and 1972. This paper describes the temporal and spatial distribution of the standing stock of phytoplankton, and phytoplankton primary productivity. The annual average primary productivity in 1972 was 4.0–4.9 mg C m−3 d−1; the annual average standing stock varied from 120 mg m−3 (freshweight) in 1969–70, to 250 mg m−3 in 1972. Phytoplankton species composition and size distribution is discussed. Throughout the year the phytoplankton is dominated by small (ultraplankton) species; μ-algae (< 5 μm) showed cell concentrations up to 15 mill. cells 1−1. The dominating group was chrysophytes; cryptophytes, dinoflagellates or green algae were at times abundant. A phytoplankton monthly budget and a diagram showing annual average carbon flow through the standing stock of phytoplankton are presented; the phytoplankton dynamics in Øvre Heimdalsvatn is compared to that of other low-productive lakes.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake. heart rate and breathing frequencies were monitored in yearling Green turtles. Routine fed animals used about 100μ O2 g live turtle-1 h-1 at 25C; this value was not significantly affected by size or short term food deprivation. Starved turtle showed a doubling of oxygen uptake after a satiation meal and heightened uptake persisted for five days. Between 15 and 30C oxygen consumption increased with rising temperature; below 15C there was falling temperature. Vigorous activity increased oxygen uptake to two or three times thr routine fed levels.
Turtles swimming gently at 25C exhibited a heart rate of around 46–48 beats min-1; this rose to 64–68 beats min-1 during vigorous and continuous activity. Contrary to expectations profound bradycardia was not seen during diving; even during 10 min dives a rate of 25–28 beats min-1 was sustained. Significantly lower heart rates were only seen in turtles which were apparently asleep.  相似文献

1. Inorganic carbon availability influences species composition of phytoplankton in acidic and highly alkaline lakes, whereas the overall influence on community photosynthesis and growth is subject to debate.
2. The influence of total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and free CO2 on community photosynthesis was studied in six Danish lakes during the summer of 1995. The lakes were selected to ensure a wide range of chlorophyll a concentrations (1–120 μg l–1), pH (5.6–9.6) and DIC concentration (0.02–2.5 m m ). Photosynthesis experiments were performed using the 14C technique in CO2-manipulated water samples, either by changing the pH or by adding/removing CO2.
3. Lake waters were naturally CO2 supersaturated during most of the experimental period and inorganic carbon limitation of photosynthetic rates did not occur under ambient conditions. However, photosynthesis by phytoplankton in lakes with low and intermediate DIC concentrations was seriously restricted when CO2 concentrations declined. Similarly, photosynthesis was limited by low CO2 concentrations during phytoplankton blooms in the hardwater alkaline lakes.  相似文献

The natural recovery of trout ( Salmo trutta L.) populations in an industrial river, the Ebbw Fawr, South Wales, has been depressed by problems of natural recruitment. Rainbow trout ( Salmo gairdneri Richardson) eggs were planted in river gravels to assess the effects of siltation on salmonid spawning success. In reaches where siltation due to the coal industry has occurred, 98–100% of eggs died during incubation in the gravels. Experiments using standpipe techniques measured gravel permeabilities and rates of dissolved oxygen (DO) supply to artificially planted eggs, the results showed a strong dependence of hatching success and alevin size on these two parameters. The median lethal DO supply rate was about 50 μg cm-2 h-1.  相似文献

Abstract: The effects of solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) on carbon uptake, oxygen evolution and motility of marine phytoplankton were investigated in coastal waters at Kristineberg Marine Research Station on the west coast of Sweden (58° 30'N, 11° 30'E). The mean irradiances at noon above the water surface during the investigation period were: photosynthetic active radiation (PAR, 400–700 nm) 1670 μmol m−2 s−1; ultraviolet-A radiation (UV-A, 320–400 nm) 35.9 W m−2 and ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280–320 nm) 1.7 W m−2. UV-B radiation was much more attenuated with depth in the water column than were PAR and UV-A radiation. UV-B radiation could not be detected at depths greater than 100–150 cm. Inhibition of carbon uptake by UV-A and UV-B in natural phytoplankton populations was greatest at 50 cm depth and the effects of UV-B were greater than those of UV-A. At depths greater than 50 cm there was almost no effect of ultraviolet radiation on carbon uptake. PAR, UV-A and UV-B decreased oxygen evolution by the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum . Inhibition of oxygen evolution was greater after 4 h than 2 h but it was not possible to distinguish the negative effects of the different light regimes. The motility of P. minimum was not affected by PAR, UV-A and UV-B. The importance of exposure of phytoplankton to different light regimes before being exposed to natural solar radiation is discussed.  相似文献

Enrichment experiments were carried out in continuous-flow units using a mineral medium with commercial linear alkylbenzenesulphonate (LAS) as the limiting carbon- and energy-source. The mixed bacterial culture originating from the waste water of a detergent plant consisted of five strains belonging to the genus Pseudomonas and two strains each of the genera Achromobacter and Acinetobacter. The cultivation conditions corresponding to dilution rates of 0.025-0.1 h-1 and LAS concentrations of 20–50 mg/1 were examined. During the experiments the composition of mixed cultures and the kinetics of LAS biodegradation were followed. Continuous-flow enrichment experiments resulted in the selection of six bacterial cultures with different compositions of individual species and capability to utilize LAS. From the original seven strains at lower dilution rates (0.025 and 0.05 h-1) six were selected, excluding Pseudomonas sp. 3, while at the highest dilution rate (0.1/h-1) five strains were selected after eliminating Pseudomonas sp. 5 and Achromobacter sp. 1. All enriched mixed cultures were more efficient in primary than in ultimate LAS degradation. Two of the culture strains were able to achieve primary LAS degradation ( Pseudomonas sp. 1 in mineral medium with LAS as the sole carbon- and energy-source and Acinetobacter sp. 3 in medium supplemented by yeast extract and nutrient broth).
None of the strains could degrade LAS completely, which indicates that many types of interactions based on combined metabolic attack as well as those based on provision of specific nutrients, may exist between culture members during the complete LAS bio-oxidation.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1 The vertical distribution of invertebrates (>0.053 mm) was studied in a sandy-bottomed, first-order stream on the Coastal Plain of Virginia, U.S.A. Invertebrate species composition, abundance and bio-mass were determined monthly over one year at sediment depth intervals of 0–1, 1–5, 5–15,15–30 and 30–40 cm.
2. The subsurface community was numerically dominated by species of Chironomidae, Nematoda and Crustacea, while much of the biomass was due to early instars of several species of Trichoptera.
3. Invertebrate density and biomass decreased significantly with depth in the substrate (ANOVA; P <0.05). Annual mean density decreased from 1,346,844 individuals m−3 at the surface to 13,578 individuals m−3 at 15–30 cm. Annual mean biomass decreased from 66.30 g m−3 at the surface to 0.44 g m−3 at 15–30 cm.
4. Dissolved oxygen decreased markedly from the surface to the 5 cm depth in the substrate, anaerobic conditions often occurring below 10 cm. Density and biomass both showed a significant positive relationship with dissolved oxygen concentration (Linear regression; P <0.05).

The temporal and spatial distribution of planktic cyanobacteria and some environmental parameters were studied in the shallow, urban Lake Kastoria, Greece from June 1996 to June 1997. Water temperature varied from 6–27 °C, pH from 7.5–8.9 and dissolved O2 concentration from 0.7–12 mg m-3 10-3. The mean annual Chl a concentration was 83 mg Chl a m-3 indicative of the eutrophic-hypertrophic state of the lake. Cyanobacterial biomass ranged from 11–238 g FW m-3, constituting about 90% of the total phytoplankton biomass throughout the year. Cyanobacterial biomass was non-uniformly distributed both vertically and horizontally from August to November 1996 and resulted mainly from the distribution of Microcystis. Seven cyanobacterial taxa were reported for the first time in Lake Kastoria. Six taxa were dominant: Microcystis aeruginosa, M. flos-aquae, M. novacekii. Limnothrix redekei, Anabaena sp. and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii. The dominant cyanobacterial taxa can be grouped on the basis of their distribution patterns (1) Microcystis species: maximum biomass occurring at pH > 8, temperature 12–17 °C, depth < 0.2 m; (2) Anabaena sp. and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii : maximum biomass at temperatures 23–26 °C; (3) Limnothrix redekei : maximum biomass at temperatures 6–27 °C. Usually, non-uniform, vertical distributions of cyanobacterial biomass were associated with the formation of temperature, pH and O2 gradients. L. redekei was considered to be a key lake organism since it contributed up to 59% of the cyanobacterial biomass. Interestingly, three of the dominant cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena sp. and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii belong to genera that include toxin-producing species.  相似文献
