Bioerosion is a common process in hard substrates. This study introduces an example from the rocky palaeoshore cropping out at a sea cliff on the Bozcaada Island. It includes bioerosion trace fossils preserved in limestone boulders of the shallow marine and lacustrine Alcitepe Formation of Late Miocene age. The ichnotaxa include borings produced by duraphagous drillers (Oichnus isp.), phonorids (cf. Conchotrema isp.), clionid sponges (Entobia cf. goniodes, Entobia geometrica, Entobia laquea, Entobia ovula, E. cf. solaris, Entobia isp.), endolithic bivalves (Gastrochaenolites torpedo, Gastrochaenolites lapidicus, Gastrochaenolites isp., Phrixichnus isp.), polychaete annelids (Maeandropolydora isp., Maeandropolydora sulcans, Maeandropolydora decipiens, Caulostrepsis taeniola, Caulostrepsis isp.), echinoids (cf. Circolites isp.) and spinculid worms (cf. Trypanites isp.). Barnacles are also common as encrusters. The borings can be ascribed to the Gastrochaenolites-Entobia assemblage, which is typical of Neogene rocky-shores. They belong to the Entobia ichnofacies indicating various conditions of light, energy, and depth. Therefore they can reveal environmental changes and play an important role in forming palaeo-rocky shores and wave-cut platforms during marine trangressive events.  相似文献

Sedimentologic and palaeontological investigation of the Upper Pliocene Slama Formation in the Lower Chelif Basin (NW Algeria) led us to collect important bivalve assemblages for taxonomic and taphonomic purposes. A rather comprehensive inventory list of Upper Pliocene bivalves from northwestern Algeria is now available and consists of 30 species, 17 of which are extinct ones. Four principal taphonomic attributes were analysed: bioerosion, encrustation, fragmentation, and abrasion. Physical and biogenic sedimentary structures are used for palaeoenvironmental interpretations. The taphonomic, sedimentologic and ichnological characteristics of most of the deposits suggests they originated from discontinuous processes of winnowing and bypassing of sediments, probably due to the action of storms in shallow waters, mainly in the shoreface depositional environment. The bivalve assemblage is dominated by disarticulated valves and displays significant taphonomic alteration in the shells. Sclerobionts traces in shells particulary affect the oyster shells. Bioerosion traces are predominately those of clionid sponges (Entobia isp.), polychaetes (Maeandropolydora isp. and Caulostrepsis isp.), bivalves (Gastrochaenolites isp.), and of predatory gastropods (Oichnus isp.). Among the sclerobionts, the identified encrusters were juvenile oyster recruits, barnacles, polychaetes (serpulid tubeworms), bryozoans (Microporella sp. and Acanthodesia sp.), and vermetid gastropods (Petaloconchus intortus).  相似文献

Recently discovered tracks in alluvial sediments of the Late Paleocene Bullion Creek Formation of western North Dakota have been identified as belonging to the large eusuchian crocodile Borealosuchus formidabilis and an associated small arthropod. They are described as two new ichnotaxa. The first of these, Borealosuchipus hanksi igen. et isp. nov., is based on a partly complete trackway having fore- and hind-footprints as well as body marks preserved in hyporelief. These tracks are directly associated with numerous body fossils including articulated bones which provide strong implications for their probable origin. The second specimen, Koupichnium pentapodus isp. nov., is founded on a trackway of a small invertebrate in which a series of five pairs of footprints are arranged along a midline drag mark which is continuous throughout the length of its trackway. This trackway shares features with other fossils as well as living arthropod trackways in which four small feet and a larger posterior hind “pusher” foot are present. The two described new ichnotaxa represent the first recognized tracks from the Wannagan Creek local fauna.  相似文献

Examples of bioerosional processes (boring patterns) are described from shallow-water limestones of the Late Jurassic Plassen Carbonate Platform (PCP) and the Late Cretaceous to Paleocene Gosau Group of the Northern Calcareous Alps, Austria. Some micro-/macro-borings can be related to distinct ichnotaxa, others are classified in open nomenclature. In the Alpine Late Jurassic, bioerosional structures recorded from clasts in mass-flows allow palaeogeographical conclusions concerning the source areas. In particular, these are borings of the Trypanites-ichnofacies detected from clasts (Barmstein limestones) of the PCP or special type of bored ooids of unknown source areas or restricted autochthonous occurrences. In the Lower Gosau Subgroup, Gastrochaenolites macroborings occur in mobile carbonate clast substrates of shore zone deposits (“Untersberg Marmor”). Different types of borings are recorded from rudist shells and coral skeleton, some of which are referable to the ichnotaxon Entobia produced by endolithic sponges. In the present study, special attention is paid to the occurrences of the cryptobiotic foraminifera Troglotella incrustans Wernli and Fookes in the Late Jurassic and Tauchella endolithica Cherchi and Schroeder in the Late Cretaceous. The latter is so far only known to be from the Early Cenomanian of France and is reported here for the first time from the Late Turonian-Early Coniacian stratigraphic interval where it was found in turbulent carbonate deposits within borings penetrating bivalve shells or coralline algae. The records of cryptobiotic foraminifera from the Northern Calcareous Alps are supplemented by a single finding from the Middle Cenomanian of SE France. A palaeoenvironmental interpretation of the occurrences of the cryptobiotic foraminifera is provided.  相似文献

In shells of the oysters Exogyra cancellata and Pycnodonte mutabilis from the Mount Laurel and Marshalltown Formations (Campanian‐Maestrichtian), three‐quarters of all valves bear sponge borings (Entobia isp.) borings and 30% have borings of a lithophagid bivalve (Gastrochaenolites isp.). Non‐random distributions of these euendoliths, documented in this paper, may in part be accounted for by differential survival of sponge and lithophagid larvae and spat in varying circumstances. In addition, exterior shell architectures and post‐mortem orientations of shells are inferred to have prompted active geophobic (antigravity), rugophilic (groove‐seeking), and rheophilic (current‐seeking) behavior that enhanced survivorship of the settling larvae.  相似文献

Bone is a substrate for bioerosion at equal rank with xylic and lithic substrates. Accordingly, borings in bone have to be identified in an analogous way to other ichnogenera coined for one type of substrate. In due course, the new ichnogenera Osteichnus n. igen. and Clavichnus n. igen. are established within the new ichnofamily Osteichnidae. Gastrochaenolites and Trypanites are here restricted to lithic substrates, and Asthenopodichnium only occurs in xylic substrates. Only with this approach, ichnotaxobases of trace fossils in bone are identical to those in other hard substrates. Cuniculichnus variabilis n. igen. n. isp. is introduced for variably shaped pits to tunnels bored into bone by beetle (arguably dermestid) larvae; its ethological character is close to a pupichnion.  相似文献

The Late Weichselian marine and glaciomarine sediments occurring in many places along the coast of Iceland are rich in invertebrate fossils, especially mollusks and barnacles. A diverse ichnofauna, constituted especially by bioerosional traces documenting the activity of predators and animals that use the host shell for attachment or the construction of dwellings, was identified at the localities of Ósmelur, Saurbær, and Brekkubakkar in southwestern Iceland. The ichnotaxa identified include Anellusichnus circularis (Santos, Mayoral, and Muñiz), Caulostrepsis isp., Centrichnus concentricus (Bromley and Martinell), Clionolithes isp., Finichnus peristroma (Taylor, Wilson, and Bromley), Finichnus isp., Sedilichnus asperus (Nielsen and Nielsen), Sedilichnus cf. excavatus (Donovan and Jagt), Sedilichnus gradatus (Nielsen and Nielsen), Sedilichnus smiley isp. nov., Sedilichnus ovalis (Bromley), Sedilichnus paraboloides (Bromley), Sedilichnus simplex (Bromley), and Sedilichnus spongiophilus (Müller).  相似文献

Two species of a new trace fossil genus (cubichnia) are described:Tripartichnus triassicus n. igen., n. isp. from the “Plattensandstein“ (Upper Buntsandstein, Röt-Folge, Lower Triassic) of Keltern-Dietlingen (Enzkreis, Baden-Württemberg, SW-Germany) andTripartichnus imbergi n. igen., n. isp. from the Solnhofen Lithographic Limestones (Upper Jurassic, Tithonian) from Waiting and Pfalzpaint (district of Eichstätt, Bavaria, SE Germany). Due to the characteristic shape of the new ichnotaxa the tracemakers can be named in all probability:Tripartichnus triassicus was most likely made byEuthycarcinus kessleri Handlirsch, 1914 andTripartichnus imbergi byPalinurina sp.  相似文献

Abstract

Tursia flabelliformisigen. et isp. nov. is described from the lower Pleistocene Argille Subappennine Formation near Tursi, southern Italy. The trace fossil occurs in protected sandy shoreface sediments and is associated with abundantBichordites. Tursia is a vertical fan-shaped spreite structure that is interpreted as the feeding trace of a deep infaunal deposit-feeding organism, either bivalve or “worm.”  相似文献

Oysters of the Marnes à Pycnodonte biauriculata Formation, Upper Cenomanian (Guerangeri biozone) were significantly sampled in building works within the town of Le Mans (Sarthe, France). They are colonized by episkeletobionts (encrusting organisms) and endoskeletobionts (boring and bioeroding organisms). First ones include bivalves, polychaetes, foraminiferans and bryozoans. Second ones are represented by about fifteen ichnotaxa, the producers of which, when they are known, belong to ten taxa. The oysters, some of which have a large fixation surface, are allochtonous or at least parautochtonous. The settlement of sclerobionts began when the oysters were alive (Entobia isp.) and continued post-mortem on isolated valves, transported in their final depositional environment (Gnathichnus pentax). The significance of the coexistence of both Entobia and Gnathichnus ichnocoenosis is discussed.  相似文献

Angular unconformites between Jurassic and Miocene strata are exposed in the sea cliffs of Cala Cigonya on the northwest coast of Menorca in the Balearic Islands of Spain. The geological discontinuities represent rocky shores on opposite sides of a former headland with 15 m of topographic relief. On the east flank, Jurassic dolomite is overlain by Upper Miocene (Tortonian to Messinian) breccia and laminated limestone. Here, a partially exhumed dolomite surface records Miocene bivalve borings of the ichnospecies Gastrochaenolites torpedo and G. lapidicus that achieved a density of >1,000 borings/m2. Other associated traces include sponge borings (Entobia isp.) and polychaete borings (Caulostrepsis isp.). A breccia deposit 0.8 m thick was derived from the underlying dolomite and angular clasts still retain evidence of bivalve borings. Above follows a succession of laminated limestone beds more than 5 m thick, including some levels with dome-shaped stromatolites and other horizons with reworked dolomite clasts. Thin-section analysis of the laminated limestone reveals dark and light couplets 0.2 mm thick consistent with microbial origins. In contrast, the west flank was buried by coarse sandstone and laminated sediments. Here, dwelling structures of regular echinoids (Circolites kotoncensis) are the dominant traces preserved on the dolomite surface, reaching a maximum density of 66 borings/m2. Associated borings include Entobia geometrica as well as rare traces of Gastrochaenolites isp. and Trypanites isp. Notable for the absence of a basal Miocene breccia, the west flank is interpreted as a sheltered rocky shore coeval with an exposed rocky shore on the east flank. Today, heavy surf on the north coast of Menorca is related to the Tramontana winds that blow out of Spain during winter months. Similar atmospheric circulation patterns must have prevailed during the Late Miocene, but the replacement of ichnofacies by microbial build-ups resulted from increased salinity during the Messinian crisis.  相似文献

Bioeroded gastropod, bivalve and coral specimens (n = 570) were collected from the Jazan area, Saudi Red Sea coast, from which 22 ichnospecies of 8 ichnogenera were identified and illustrated. These traces were produced by clionid sponges (Entobia geometrica, E. ovula, E. cf. goniodes, E. cretacea, E. laquea, E. cf. paradoxa and E. isp.), duraphagous drillers (Oichnus ovalis, O. paraboloides, O. simplex and O. isp.), endolithic bivalves (Gastrochaenolites cf. dijugus, G. lapidicus, G. torpedo and G. isp.), polychaete annelids (Caulostrepsis taeniola, C. isp., Maeandropolydora sulcans, M. isp. and ?Trypanites isp.), acorn barnacles (Rogerella isp.), and vermetid gastropods (Renichnus isp.). The seashells act as hard substrate for colonization by serpulid worm, bivalves, bryozoans, and barnacles. Ichnogenus Entobia was most abundant (56.1%), followed by Gastrochaenolites (25.4%), Caulostrepsis (5.3%), Trypanites (4.2%), Maeandropolydora (3.2%), Oichnus (2.8%), Renichnus (1.9%), and Rogerella (1.0%). Oichnus occurred on the thin-shelled and smooth molluscs, while most Gastrochaenolites borings were found in the larger and thicker seashells as a suitable substrate for the settlement of polychaetes, lithophages, naticids, mytilids, and vermetids. Presence of annelid traces among radial ribs and at the siphonal areas of bivalves is indicative of nutrient capturing from water flow during the lifetime of these bivalves, within a shallow, high energy marine environment, where disarticulation, fragmentation, and abrasion of the seashells were abundantly observed.  相似文献

The Ahníkov (Miocene, Czech Republic) site represents a concentration of vertebrate skeletal remains in a swamp setting. Autochthonous bone deposits were strongly altered by sedimentary processes and early diagenesis. Biting and gnawing traces recognized on hard animal tissues (bones, teeth, antlers, turtle thoraces) represent seven recurring morphotypes. The following ichnotaxa are erected: Nihilichnus nihilicus n. igen. et n. isp., Nihilichnus mortalis n. isp., Machichnus regularis n. igen. et n. isp., Machichnus multilineatus n. isp., Machichnus bohemicus n. isp., and Brutalichnus brutalis n. igen. et n. isp. Each kind of bones or similar substrates bears a specific proportion of various bite traces but no observed morphotype is specific for a single substrate. Ethologically, traces of sharpening of teeth are principally different from predation traces. The beavers Steneofiber eseri and Steneofiber depereti, the carnivore Amphicyon sp. and the crocodiles are presumed as the tracemakers.  相似文献

More than 4000 insect trace fossils collected in recent years from Pliocene deposits at Laetoli in northern Tanzania provide new insights on early hominin palaeoenvironments. These trace fossils include: Fictovichnus gobiensis, Coprinisphaera murguiai, C. kheprii, Coprinisphaera ispp., Quirogaichnus isp., Teisseirei linguatus isp. nov., Celliforma ritchiei isp. nov., C. spirifer, C. germanica, C. cfr. curvata, Celliforma ispp., Rosellichnus isp., Vondrichnus planoglobus, Laetolichnus kwekai igen. et isp. nov. and Krausichnidae indet. They reveal that at least one species of moth, three dung beetles and five other coleopterans, nine taxa of solitary bees, and an indeterminate number of taxa of termites inhabited the Lower Laetolil environments. The Upper Laetolil environments, which have yielded a rich diversity of vertebrate fossils, including the early hominin Australopithecus afarensis and its putative footprints, supported several taxa of termites, one dung beetle, five other coleopterans, and eleven taxa of bees. The Upper Ndolanya environments, which have yielded the hominin Paranthropus aethiopicus, record four taxa of dung beetles, four other coleopterans, and two taxa of bees. The record of larval mortality and lack of intruder activity, revealed by the absence of emergence and intruder traces, may be associated with the anoxic/hypoxic conditions caused by the instantaneous burial of soils under thick volcanic ashes. The record of the Celliforma Ichnofacies in the Upper Laetolil environments indicates the dominance of shrubland to woodland with limited grass cover. This is supported also by the absence of Coprinisphaera, which suggests a scarcity of fresh grasses and a low abundance of large mammal grazers.  相似文献

Abstract

Bromlichnus bromleyi n.igen. n.isp., a compound trace fossil consisting of two segments representing dwelling and feeding, is described. Owing to a concentric spreite in a bow-shaped burrow, B. bromleyi is interpreted as made by holothurians. In most cases, it is connected to a repichnion. The new ichnotaxon derives from the narrow Pfalzpaint Subbasin of the Solnhofen archipelago (Upper Jurassic, SE Germany), interpreted as a tidal channel connecting two basins. The interrelationships of different behaviours reflected in compound trace fossils allow holistic analysis of the work of individual animals, enabling more accurate interpretation of tracemaker anatomy and function.  相似文献

The end-Permian mass extinction has been widely documented to be accompanied with oceanic anoxia, which was considered as one of the most plausible killing mechanisms. However, it is still unclear when anoxia began to occur and how widely affected during the pre-extinction interval. In this study, Lopingian bottom-water oxygen level changes around the Wuchiapingian–Changhsingian boundary (WCB) at the northern Penglaitan section in Guangxi are analysed based on trace fossil assemblages and ichnofabric indices. Detailed bed-by-bed ichnological analyses confirm the presence of trace fossils Chondrites intricatus, C. isp., Palaeophycus isp., Planolites isp. A, P. isp. B, Thalassinoides isp. A, T. isp. B, Trichichnus linearis, Zoophycos isp., and other bioturbational structures. The ichnofabric indices around the WCB are mostly 1–2, but rapidly increase to 4–5 in some short intervals. The distinct fluctuations of ichnofabric indices suggest that the oxygen level of sediments was generally deficient, but the dysoxic or anoxic periods were punctuated by several short oxic intervals. Thus, it can be inferred that the benthic organisms were under secularly environmental stresses around the WCB at the northern Penglaitan section. The anoxic conditions unfavourable for aerobiosis in the deep basin may start in the late Wuchiapingian. However, more sections need to be studied to determine whether this is a local or regional phenomenon.  相似文献

We report the oldest fossil evidence of osteophagia by terrestrial invertebrates on both the Asian and African continents. Bones attributable to the Middle Jurassic dinosaur Chuanjiesaurus (Dinosauria: Sauropoda) were found with post-mortem insect modification in the Chuanjie Formation, Yunnan Province, China. The morphology of the borings closely matches the ichnogenus Cubiculum. Based on the lack of bioglyphs observed in Cubiculum ornatus, a new ichnospecies is proposed here. The new trace fossil, Cubiculum inornatus isp. nov., is interpreted to have been constructed for pupation by an unknown taxon of insect. Additionally, we report even older borings from Early Jurassic dinosaur bones of the Elliott Formation in the Karoo Basin, which represent the second oldest occurrence of insect traces in bone from continental settings. Both trace fossils sites have palaeogeographic implications for the origins and dispersal of osteophagia amongst terrestrial invertebrates during the Mesozoic. These discoveries push back the antiquity of pupation in animal bones by more than 100 million years to the Middle Jurassic, indicating that this behaviour, and osteophagy more generally, originated early in the Mesozoic, roughly comparable with the origination of insect pupation in woody substrates (Late Triassic).  相似文献

Abstract: Neogene palaeoshore sediments are abundantly represented along the Mediterranean coast of Iberia. An outcrop north of the Sierra Tejeda, named La Resinera, exposes concentrations of pebbles and boulders of marble, comprising an upper Miocene marine beach deposit. The high diversity of bioerosion trace fossils present in these boulders includes structures produced by polychaete annelids, demosponges, echinoids and endolithic bivalves, which indicate a shallow shoreface environment. The ichnotaxa represented are Maeandropolydora sulcans, Caulostrepsis taeniola, Entobia geometrica, Entobia ovula, Circolites kotoncensis, Gastrochaenolites torpedo, Gastrochaenolites lapidicus, Gastrochaenolites ornatus and Gastrochaenolites turbinatus. The borings are Tortonian (late Miocene) in age. Also present, and particularly abundant, are large sponge borings that have a single chamber from which radiating canals emerge. This trace fossil is designated as Entobia resinensis isp. nov.  相似文献

Various trace fossils from the Hassberge Formation and the Löwenstein Formation (Middle Keuper, Upper Triassic) of the Haßberge region are described. Twenty-three different forms have been identified, 17 of which are named, includingCruziana pascens n. isp.,Lockeia cunctator n. isp., andRusophycus versans n. isp.Lockeia siliquaria James, 1879,L. amygdaloides (Seilacher, 1953),L. triangulichnus Kim, 1994, andL. elongata (Yang, 1984) are revised and synonymized under the oldest available name,L. siliquaria James, 1879.Rusophycus eutendorfensis (Linck, 1942) andR. carbonarius Dawson, 1864 are revised. The diagnosis ofPolykladichnus Fürsich, 1981 is emended, and a diagnosis forHelminthoidichnites Fitch, 1850 is given for the first time. Among the described ichnotaxa,Skolithos ispp.,Rusophycus carbonarius, andTaenidium barretti are the most common forms. The trace fossil association is typical of theScoyenia ichnofacies, which indicates non-marine, periodically or completely inundated environments, such as floodplains and lake margins. Two palaeoichnocoenoses are identified. One ichnocoenosis, dominated byCruziana problematica, cf.Polykladichnus isp., andSkolithos isp. B characterizes margins of trough cross-bedded sandstones. Another ichnocoenosis, dominated byRusophycus versans n. isp.,Taenidium barretti,Scoyenia gracilis andSkolithos isp. A is related to ephemeral lake deposits. Taxonomic recommendations for the use of hitherto described and figured invertebrate Keuper trace fossils from Germany are given.  相似文献
