Detailed male meiosis, critical morphological observations and distribution pattern of diploid as well as tetraploid cytotypes of the Western Himalayan species, Bupleurum lanceolatum have been evaluated at present. A diploid (n = 8) cytotype is reported from Kashmir, whereas, both diploid (n = 8) and tetraploid (n = 16) cytotypes are available from two districts Kangra and Sirmaur of Himachal Pradesh. Out of these, the tetraploid cytotype makes new addition for the species on a worldwide basis. As per behavior, a tetraploid cytotype is characterized by abnormal meiosis leading to high pollen sterility and size variation of the pollen grains. Morphologically, tetraploids are noted to be luxuriant in comparison to the diploids.  相似文献

Campuloclinium macrocephalum DC. is a perennial herb widely distributed in the New World and introduced in South Africa, where it is commonly called “pompom weed”. This species is considered one of the most important weeds of Brazil and one of the problematic invasive plants of South Africa. The meiotic system can be studied to assess the ability of a weed to spread, but only few studies on C. macrocephalum have been realized. In this study, we examined the meiotic behavior and pollen fertility of 14 natural populations of C. macrocephalum from Argentina and Uruguay. Meiotic analysis revealed 2 triploid (2n = 3x = 30), 11 tetraploid (2n = 4x = 40) and 1 mixed population (2n = 2x = 20, 2n = 4x = 40). Both, triploid and tetraploid specimens showed a widely variable meiotic behavior with irregular chromosome pairing showing univalents, bivalents, trivalents (in triploids) and tetravalents (in tetraploids) at diacinesis of first meiotic division. Different abnormalities were observed, such as: laggard chromosomes, chromatin bridges, and out of plate chromosomes at metaphase I. During meiosis I (prophase), some cells showed the phenomenon of cytomixis or chromatin transfer between pollen mother cells. The meiotic indexes suggest that only four populations were normally fertile (over 90 % of fertile pollen), indicating meiotically stable plants. The remaining populations share variable pollen fertility, with triploids ranging from 46.64 to 54.83 % and tetraploids varying from 3.54 to 45.30 %. We suggest that polyploidy seems to be recurrent in C. macrocephalum, promoting partial sterility of pollen grains, generating large numbers of individuals by apomixis promoting invasion of crop fields. This study presents the meiotic behavior of this weed, these could be useful for future studies of biological control in areas with no natural enemies.  相似文献

Background and Aims

In flowering plants, microsporogenesis is accompanied by various types of cytoplasmic partitioning (cytokinesis). Patterns of male cytokinesis are suspected to play a role in the diversity of aperture patterns found in pollen grains of angiosperms. The relationships between intersporal wall formation, tetrad shape and pollen aperture pattern ontogeny are studied.

Methods

A comparative analysis of meiosis and aperture distribution was performed within tetrads in two triporate eudicot species with contrasting aperture arrangements within their tetrads [Epilobium roseum (Onagraceae) and Paranomus reflexus (Proteaceae)].

Key Results and Conclusions

Intersporal wall formation is a two-step process in both species. Cytokinesis is first achieved by the formation of naked centripetal cell plates. These naked cell plates are then covered by additional thick, localized callose deposits that differ in location between the two species. Apertures are finally formed in areas in which additional callose is deposited on the cell plates. The recorded variation in tetrad shape is correlated with variations in aperture pattern, demonstrating the role of cell partitioning in aperture pattern ontogeny.  相似文献

During the present study, 360 populations of 174 species belonging to 82 genera and 23 families of dicots have been cytologically worked out from different localities of District Kangra (Himachal Pradesh) between 550 and 3,800 m altitude. As many as 10 species including Berberis ceratophylla (2n = 28), Caltha alba (2n = 32), Corydalis meifolia (2n = 16), C. thyrsiflora (2n = 16), Impatiens reidii (2n = 14), Indigofera hamiltonii (2n = 16), Potentilla thomsonii (2n = 14), Sedum trifidum (2n = 36), Stellaria semivestita (2n = 26) and Viola canescens (2n = 12) have been cytologically worked out for the first time at world level. New intraspecific diploid cytotypes have been recorded in 11 species while new intraspecific tetraploid cytotypes are noticed in 15 species. B-chromosomes have also been reported in 3 species viz. Anemone obtusiloba, Clematis grata and Ranunculus diffusus for the first time at world level. The species of the area are active state of evolution, depicting heterogeneity in chromosome numbers involving polyploidy (48 species, 28.18 %) as well as irregular meiotic behavior. The meiotic abnormalities have been witnessed in 69 species (39.65 %) showing different types of irregularities such as cytomixis, interbivalant connections, unoriented bivalents, chromatin stickiness, chromosomal laggards and bridges as well as abnormal microsprogenesis. All these meiotic abnormalities lead to reduced pollen fertility and formation of variable sized pollen grains in most of these species.  相似文献

The various normal and abnormal stages of meiosis and pollen mitosis of Drimiopsis botryoides are described, and a comparison between naturally propagated in vivo and tissue culture derived ex vitro plants in respect to their cytological behaviour presented. We also describe the floral morphology and investigate the relationship between the floral developmental stages and the progression of microgametogenesis. In total, 33 bivalents are observed in diakinesis, which indicate the diploid number 2n = 66 and this number is cross-checked by a haploid set of n = 33 chromosomes in pollen mitosis. Only 6.8% and 4.9% meiotic abnormalities were recorded on in vivo and ex vitro plants, respectively, which led to the formation of non-viable pollen. Finally, the microspores have to develop into tri-cellular male gametophyte. Only 0.2% pollen grains are found with a micro-nucleus. Though the higher pollen viability was recorded on both in vivo (89.3 ± 4.1%) and ex vitro (92.1 ± 4.6%) plants, but surprisingly the pollen germination rate is extremely low with 13.6 ± 1.74% and 21.3 ± 1.55%, respectively. The present study obviously enriches the cytological database of D. botryoides and may help future research on androgenesis and genetic improvement.  相似文献

A palynological survey, including LM, SEM and TEM is presented for eight genera, nine species and 76 samples of the Monotropoideae which is composed of 10 genera and 13 species. On the basis of the aperture number and shape, the following six pollen types are recognized: 1) 3-colp(oroid) ate—Allotropa, 2) 2-colpor(oid)ate—Monotropsis andHemitomes, 3) 4-colpor(oid)ate—Pterospora, Sarcodes andPleuricospora, 4) 2- and 3-colpor(oid)ate—Monotropa hypopitys, 5) 3-colporate and-porate —Monotropa uniflora, 6) 3- to 4- porate—Monotropastrum humile. Relationships among taxa within the Monotropoideae are illustrated on the palynological characters including the aperture type, exine sculpture and structure. Both pollen grains with two and four apertures have evolved independently from pollen grains with three apertures, according to the infraspecific variation of aperture numbers and the usual occurrence of three-aperturate pollen grains in the Ericaceae. 3-colp(oroid)ate pollen ofAllotropa is the most primitive and occupies an isolated position in the subfamily, on the other hand 3- to 4-porate pollen ofMonotropastrum humile is most advanced in the subfamily, probably even in the Ericaceae. A reduced sexine inMonotropastrum humile appears to be a specialized pollen character. Infraspecific geographical difference in palynological characters is revealed in two species ofMonotropa for the first time.M. hypopitys is basically characterized by pollen grains with two apertures in the New World vs. three apertures in the Old World.M. uniflora is basically characterized by 3-porate pollen in the New World vs. 3-colporate in the Old World. In both species pollen grains with more primitive characters usually occur in the Old World.  相似文献

The pollen morphology in 15 species representing five genera in the tribe Lithospermeae of Boraginoideae (Boraginaceae) has been investigated and illustrated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The tribe Lithospermeae is very diverse in pollen morphology. The pollen grains are 10.4–41.8 × 7–33.1 μm in size with subspheroidal, prolate, cocoon, dumbbell, and ovoid shapes. The pollen apertures are of five types: 3-colporate, 3-syncolporate, 4-8-colporate, 4-6-syncolpate, and 6-7-colpate types. The exine ornamentations are generally smooth or rugulose, sparsely echinulate, and rarely rugulate. Based on pollen morphology, we developed a key to identify the genera of the tribe Lithospermeae, compared the pollen apertures among tribes of Boraginoideae, explained the evolutionary trends of the pollen grains, and discussed the taxonomic position of the tribe Lithospermeae. The palynological data suggest pollen of the eurypalynous type and support the proposal that the tribe Lithospermeae is in the primitive position of the subfamily Boraginoideae, and Echium Linn. is in the tribe Lithospermeae rather than in a novel tribe. Our observations have application potential for identification of pollen fossils of the tribe Lithospermeae.  相似文献

The present paper reports the pollen morphology of 36 species and varieties of Brassica L. in China mostly for the first time. They were examined both under LM and SEM. Pollen grains of Brassica L. in China are long-spheroidal, subspheroidal, spheriodal, oblate, rarely reniformis or subsquare. According to the aperture characters pollen grains may be divided into four types: 2,3,4-colpate, 3-colpate, 3,4-colpate, 3,4-colporate. The exine sculpture may also be divided into three types: 1, reticulate, 2, cerebroid-reticulate, 3, foveolatereticulate. Detailed characters of pollen grains for each taxon are presented in Table 1. The 2,3,4-colpate type of pollen grains may be considered as primitive one and the 3,4-colpate or 3,4-colporate type of pollen grains is the most advanced in Brassica. The tricolpate aperture and reticulate exine have been reported by the previous authors, whereas, 3,4-colporate and cerebroid-reticulate or foveolate-reticulate pollen grains are newly reported.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of several genera in Portulacaceae is described. Particular attention has been paid to the genera of the subfamily Montioideae, as a stage of continued monographical studies. Among genera especially dealt with are Claytonia, Montia, Crunocallis, Naiocrene, Neopaxia, Mona, Maxia, Limnalsine, and Montiastrum. In the taxonomical treatment of these genera the pollen morphology has proved to afford many important additional characters.

The pollen grains of Claytonia are distinguished from those of the remainder in being 3-colpate. The grains of the Claytonia-type have many similarities with those of Lewisia, a genus of the subfamily Portulacoideae. The other genera of Montioideae have pantocolpate pollen grains. Among these genera several different pollen types are distinguished, chiefly with regard to the sexine structures and the aperture membranes. The Montiastrum-type is especially interesting, with tholate grains, a particular pollen type not met with in any other genus in the family. The pollen morphology of some genera in the Portulacoideae is also treated. In some species in Calandrina and Talinum pantotreme pollen grains are observed with apertures transitional between pori and colpi. The apertures of the pantotreme grains are arranged in characteristic patterns.

Particular attention has been given to the variation of the pollen morphological characters. This variation has been examined with regard to the differences between different populations of the same species as well as between different species. The greatest variation has been observed in the shape and size of the grains. The structure and sculpture and thickness of the sexine and the aperture membranes are less variable. Some polyploid taxa are connected with the occurrence of pollen grains with divergent and varying aperture numbers.

In a survey of the genera the taxonomical results of the investigation are presented with particular regard to the pollen morphology. The new genus, Maxia Ö. Nilss., is described. One new species, Montia clara Ö. Nilss., is described and some new combinations are made.

Pollen morphological diagnoses are given for 46 different taxa. The aperture conditions for 96 different species are presented.  相似文献

Based on a five-year study of pollen production and release in two different natural populations of Mesua ferrea from Indo-Burma region of Northeast India, we determined that pollen output follows a spatio-temporal pattern. Pollen productivity determinations considered various sources of variability, including the number of flowers per branch, flowers per tree, anthers per tree and pollen grains per tree. Each of these parameters revealed significant year-to-year and population effects. Anthesis follows a forenoon pattern, whereas anther dehiscence pursues the diurnal pattern. The former was significantly correlated with the timing of floral visitation and pollen deposition on stigmas. The latter, however, had significant relationship with the deposition of pollen grains on microscopic slides. The Apis and Xylocopa bees are the efficient pollinators to achieve the reproductive success in M. ferrea. Annual production of pollen per tree varied from averages of 1.07 ± 0.10 × 1010 and 3.24 ± 0.16 × 1010 in years of low production, with alternate high years, producing 3.85 ± 0.34 × 1010 and 8.22 ± 0.76 × 1010 pollen grains per tree.  相似文献

The immediate result of recombination during male meiosis within the complex interchange heterozygote polyploids in Zephyranthes could be assessed from the chromosomal constitution of pollen grains in one species with 2n=25. The numbers found in the pollen grains were n=1–16, 20 and 24. Considering n=12 (22.3%) as the haploid number, nearly 57.2% were subhaploid, out of which 19.6% had n=11. Occurrence of such a high proportion of subhaploid grains may be explained on the basis of the polyploid constitution (4x+1) of the species (x=6). In this sense, grains with a basic set of 6 chromosomes may be able to function. Therefore, in the real sense only grains with numbers less than 6 are submonoploid which constitute only 10.7%. In the subhaploid grains there was a preference for large and medium sized chromosomes, while in grains with higher numbers there was noted a tendency for smaller chromosomes to be represented more than once, indicating their non-disjunction during meiosis. Totally new types of nucleolar chromosomes emanating after recombination were also seen. This investigation has shown the extent of potential cytological polymorphism possible in heterozygotes like Zephyranthes puertoricensis. How much of this polymorphism is meaningful in creating the aneuploid pattern found in the genus, depends on the competitive advantage different numbers have during fertilisation vis-a-vis possibly similar polymorphism created during the female meiosis.  相似文献

Neotropical Heliconius and Laparus butterflies actively collect pollen onto the proboscis and extract nutrients from it. This study investigates the impact of the processing behaviour on the condition of the pollen grains. Pollen samples (n = 72) were collected from proboscides of various Heliconius species and Laparus doris in surrounding habitats of the Tropical Research Station La Gamba (Costa Rica). Examination using a light microscope revealed that pollen loads contained 74.88 ± 53.67% of damaged Psychotria pollen, 72.04 ± 23.4% of damaged Psiguria/Gurania pollen, and 21.35 ± 14.5% of damaged Lantana pollen (numbers represent median ± first quartile). Damaged pollen grains showed deformed contours, inhomogeneous and/or leaking contents, or they were empty. Experiments with Heliconius and Laparus doris from a natural population in Costa Rica demonstrated that 200 min of pollen processing behaviour significantly increased the percentage of damaged pollen of Psychotria compared to pollen from anthers (P = 0.015, Z = ?2.44, Mann–Whitney U-test). Examination of pollen loads from green house reared Heliconius butterflies resulted in significantly greater amounts of damaged Psiguria pollen after 200 min of processing behaviour compared to pollen from flowers (P < 0.001, Z = ?4.583, Mann–Whitney U-test). These results indicate that pollen processing functions as extra oral digestion whereby pollen grains are ruptured to make the content available for ingestion.  相似文献

Among the angiosperms, features of pollen morphology such as grain size, aperture number and surface ornamentation display striking variation. It is less well appreciated that pollen morphology may vary within and among populations of the same species as well as within individual plants. In some species, individual plants produce multiple types of fertile pollen grains (called pollen heteromorphism). Aspects of pollen morphology, such as aperture number, are likely to affect fertilization success with different morphologies favored in different local competitive and ecological environments. This study surveys variation in pollen grain morphology among species throughout the genus Thalictrum. Pollen from individuals of 36 species was rehydrated from herbarium specimens, and light microscopy was used to quantify pollen grain aperture number and size. I find that pollen aperture-number heteromorphism is present within all Thalictrum species studied, and distributions of aperture-number morphs vary both within and among species. This study provides an example of significant pollen heteromorphism within a genus that also varies widely for pollination mode and sexual system.  相似文献

We investigated genetic variation of 273 individuals from 25 populations of the monotypic species Hagenia abyssinica (Rosaceae) from the highlands of Ethiopia at three chloroplast microsatellite loci. The objectives were to infer the factors that shaped the genetic structure and to reconstruct the recolonization history of the species. Six haplotypes that were phylogenetically grouped into two lineages were identified. Homology of the three loci to the respective regions of the chloroplast genome was confirmed by sequencing. The chloroplast haplotypes found in Hagenia showed a clear pattern of congruence between their geographical distribution and genealogical relationships. A very low haplotype diversity within populations (h S = 0.079, v S = 0.058) and a very high population differentiation (G ST = 0.899, N ST = 0.926) was observed, reflecting very low mixing between recolonizing lineages. Restricted gene flow through seeds, rare long-distance dispersal, contiguous range expansion and mutation shaped the genetic structure of Hagenia. Fossil pollen records suggested that the trend of postglacial recolonization of Hagenia was first in the south and latter went to the north in Ethiopia.  相似文献

The main objective of this study is to establish the level of pollen abortion prior to its release from the anther in species of Chenopodiaceae in marsh habitats and to compare this level among the taxons, locations and positions of the flowers in the dichasium and the relative positions of the anthers. We established the level of nonfunctional pollen formation in 39 samples belonging to 10 species, using lactophenol cotton blue staining. Aborted pollen grains were found to be significantly smaller than normal ones. The results revealed differences in the percentage of normal grains among different species and tribes studied: Atripliceae (56.1 ± 27.1%), Salicornieae (80.36 ± 16.52%), Suaedeae (54.7 ± 31.2%) and Salsoleae (32.5 ± 25.7%). In some species there were significant differences among the populations studied, but in species of Saliconieae we found no differences either between different positions in the dicasia or in the anther. In the tribes Suaedeae and Salsoleae, we postulate the existence of a system that maintains different levels of partial male sterility among individuals in the populations, which would reduce the autogamous fruit set rate and favor the cross-pollination rates of sterile male individuals. We base this on high intrapopulation variability at those levels, on the constancy with which they are presented in the different populations studied, and on the lack of interannual differences.  相似文献

Investigating the tolerance of plant reproductive systems to environmental changes has become a research priority under current climate change scenarios. Successful plant conservation requires knowledge of plant reproductive biology, particularly the meiotic characteristics of planted species. Meiosis, as part of microsporogenesis, is a critical plant developmental stage controlling future pollen quality. Meiosis in a Siberian fir (Abies sibirica) plantation, established in the Forest Arboretum of the Sukachev Institute, Russia, was studied from 2002 to 2004. The microsporogenesis pattern found for the Siberian fir appeared to be largely similar to that exhibited by other conifer species. Meiosis in the Siberian fir has the following characteristics: asynchrony, rapid progression of telophases I and II, and parallel and linear spindle arrangements at different meiosis II stages. General and specific meiosis irregularities were recorded at each stage. Some specific features of meiosis and the specific development of some irregularities were revealed. Pollen development analysis showed that irregular pollen grains made up less than 1% of all grains. The specific features of meiosis identified in fir trees growing in the Arboretum indicated low resistance of male reproductive structures to climatic changes and might account for high fir pollen sterility in this new environment.  相似文献

Cytomorphological studies were made on 322 populations of 150 species/153 taxa belonging to 79 genera and 23 families of flowering plants. Out of these, 14 species were cytologically worked out for the first time on a worldwide basis along with B-chromosomes (0–1B) recorded for the first time in Agrimonia eupatoria. Similarly, 29 species were reported with varied chromosomal reports on a worldwide basis. The chromosome numbers ranged from 2n = 10 to 2n = 96 and posed high amount of intraspecific genetic diversity when seen in relation to other reports for the worked out species in light of previous chromosomal databases on India and world basis. The different levels of ploidy in these species/taxa vary from 2x to 12x with the overall polyploidy being 27.45 % and predominant in members belonging to the genera Ranunculus and Epilobium as well as families Ranunculaceae and Rosaceae. In the taxa showing anomalous meiotic behavior, cytomixis is found to be quite common and associated with various meiotic abnormalities in the meiocytes, which ultimately leads to pollen sterility and formation of variable sized pollen grains.  相似文献

The genus Lolium comprises several species of economical importance in temperate countries, mostly due to their high nutritional value and adaptability to cold environments, including southern regions of Brazil. Recently, several diploid cultivars and populations, as well as synthetic tetraploid cultivars have been explored. In order to viabilize or to direct crossings, it is important that the accessions present regular meiosis, thus, producing viable pollen grains. In this way, this study aimed at investigating the meiosis of nine accessions of Lolium multiflorum used in breeding programs, seeking to evaluate its viability in future crossings. The meiosis of diploid plants (2n?=?2×?=?14) is more regular than the artificially tetraploidized genotypes (2n?=?4×?=?28). In the tetraploids, univalent, bivalent, and multivalent configurations were observed. The irregularities were associated to mixoploidy, irregular segregation of chromosomes, spindle disorders, asynchrony, micronuclei, and cellular fusion and formation of syncyte. The abnormalities affected the meiotic index of tetraploid cultivars, characterizing them as unstable. Nevertheless, both diploid and tetraploid genotypes are considered able to participate in crossings because, although there are abnormalities, they do not occur at levels that could affect the production of viable pollen grains.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of the genus Skimmia was studied. Of six species of the genus, five species were investigated by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen grains of Skimmia had striate to striate-reticulate sculpture and variable aperture number (3-7), and these characters differed from even the phylogenetically closest relatives such as Dictamnus and Casimiroa which have 3-colporate pollen grains with reticulate exine. In Skimmia laureola, pollen dimorphism is suggested in the aperture number in accordance with the floral system. Pollen grains of Skimmia japonica, a morphologically very variable species, were extensively surveyed covering its whole distribution area. The grains were also striate to striate-reticulate, and the exine sculpture was not different between varieties. However, the aperture number of S. japonica showed a geographical variation ranging from 4 to 6; in Sakhalin, Hokkaido, most part of Honshu and Taiwan, grains with 4-5 apertures were dominant, while in the southern part of Japan, including the Ryukyu Islands and the Izu Islands, those with 5-6 apertures were common.  相似文献

The present study is part of our research project on cytomorphology of gamopetalous flora of Kashmir Himalaya, a zone with rich biodiversity. Out of 134 species of Gamopetalae meiotically investigated, chromosome numbers for 30 accessions belonging to 17 species and six families are new or varied reports. Euphrasia paucifolia (n = 22), Lactuca decipiens (n = 8), Saussurea albescens (n = 17), Saussurea roylei (n = 16), Saussurea taraxacifolia (n = 16) and Veronica deltigera (n = 8) are first cytological reports for these species. Anaphalis nepalensis (n = 28), Codonopsis rotundifolia (n = 16) and Hieracium vulgatum (n = 27) are new euploid chromosome reports for these species suggesting potential speciation through chromosomal evolution. Besides, Androsace mucronifolia (n = 10), A. sempervivoides (n = 10), Cicerbita lessertiana (n = 8), Dracocephalum nutans (n = 5), Erigeron patentisquama (n = 9), Galium pauciflorum (n = 11), Onopordum acanthium (n = 17) and Xanthium spinosum (n = 8) are the first chromosome reports to Indian accessions of the species. Out of the 17 species, 9 species (52.9 %) viz. A. nepalensis, C. lessertiana, C. rotundifolia, D. nutans, E. patentisquama, Euphrasia paucifolia, L. decipiens, O. acanthium and V. deltigera show abnormal meiosis/microsporogenesis of one or other type, thereby leading to pollen anomalies.  相似文献
