Crown architecture and growth rate of trunk height, trunk diameterand lateral branches of understorey trees (5–10m tall)were compared between two co-dominating conifers,Abies sachalinensisandPiceaglehnii, in relation to the index of local crowding intensity,W,represented as a function of density, distance and basal areaof taller neighbours. For the two conifers, the growth of trunkheight and diameter was decreased and crowns became flat withincreasingW, keeping crown projection area. Self-pruning oflower branches was more intense inAbiesthan inPiceain crowdedconditions, while both conifers showed similar crown forms inless crowded conditions. These results suggest that the growthin lateral branches exceeded that in height in crowded conditions, especially inAbies. Tree age of both conifers increased withincreasingW, resulting from the low growth rate in crowded conditions. The age of the longest and lowest branch ofPicea, up to 150years, was positively correlated with the tree age ranging from70 to 250 years, whereas that ofAbieswas constant at around30 years irrespective of tree age varying from 40 to 140 years. This result agrees with the observation that agedAbieshad moreflat-shaped crowns than in agedPiceain crowded conditions. Theseresults suggest that each conifer adapted to crowding in differentways: high elongation of branches with high turnover rate forAbiesandviceversaforPicea. An experiment comparing different initial planting densitiesof Pinus radiata D. Don was established in 1940 at Mt. Burrin south-east South Australia. It had been measured periodicallyto age 40 years. It is shown that after some years the treesof each individual plot of the experiment segregated into agroup of ‘suppressed’ trees which grew little indiameter and a group of actively growing ‘dominant’trees. This is consistent with other work that has suggestedthat monocultures tend to produce a two-tiered canopy. The slopeof the relationship between the logarithm of the mean weightper tree and the logarithm of the density of the various plotsof the experiment (the ‘competition-density effect’)was computed at each age at which the experiment was measured, both for all live trees of the plots and for the dominants only. For this analysis tree weights were estimated using the allometricrelationship between weight and diameter at breast height. Forthe dominants, the slope rapidly declined with age until itapproached – 1.5, which is the limiting slope of the competition-densityeffect or the so-called ‘self-thinning rule’. Whenall live trees of the plots were used, the slope declined slowlywith age but remained far from – 1.5. Previously, theself-thinning rule has been seen as determining the way in whichmortality, i.e. self-thinning, occurs in stands. In the presentwork, the rule is found to apply to the larger, actively growingtrees of the stands soon after they start to suppress the smallertrees and long before substantial mortality has occurred inmany stands. Thus tree suppression, rather than mortality, isseen to determine the rule. The pattern of diameter growth oftrees of the various stands of the experiment is found to beconsistent with previous findings that skewness of the frequencydistribution of diameters of trees of stands increases withtime. Anatomy and morphology of needles from six different positionswithin the crowns of western hemlock,Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.)Sarg., were studied to investigate the plastic response of leafstructure to crown position, in relation to stand age. Treeswere sampled from three stands, all of which originated followingcatastrophic fires, representing a chronosequence (15, 55 and145 years old) of stand development. Needles from the highestand outermost crown positions showed morphological and anatomicalresponses normally associated with ‘sun leaves’.As a measure of expressed plasticity, we calculated a relativetrait range (RTR) index to quantify differences in expressedtraits between needles from the upper outer crown (UO needles)and those from the lower inner crown (LI needles). RTR was positivefor most morphological and anatomical traits, indicating largertrait measurements on UO needles relative to LI needles (e.g.UO needles were thicker and had more vascular tissue than LIneedles). However, the degree to which sun and shade leaf traitswere expressed varied between stands. In the youngest stand,UO needles had higher maximal rates of photosynthesis than LIneedles (positive RTRPs), but this trend was reversed in theoldest stand (negative RTRPs). Mean RTR across all morphologicaland anatomical traits was higher in the 145-year-old stand thanin either the 55-year-old stand (P = 0·03) or the 15-year-oldstand (P < 0·01). While this probably relates mainlyto differences in light conditions between the three stands,it may also indicate a connection between ontogeny and phenotypicplasticity. Starting in 1996, individual trees of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestrisL.) aged 30 years, were grown in closed-top chambers and exposedto either normal ambient conditions (CON), elevated CO2(approx.700 µmol mol-1; Elev. C), elevated temperature (approx.2 °C and approx. 6 °C above the outside ambient temperatureduring the ‘growing season’ and ‘off season’,respectively; Elev. T) or a combination of elevated CO2and warmertemperature (Elev. CT). Sap flow was monitored simultaneouslyby the constant-power heat balance method in a total of 16 trees, four for each treatment, over a 32 d period in summer 1998 (afterthe completion of needle expansion and branch elongation). Toquantify the contributions of crown and physical environmentalvariables to total crown transpiration, a ‘sun/shade model’was developed and used to partition the changes in transpirationto different sources. The results of the sap flow measurementsindicate that (1) total daily sap flow (Etree.d) varied from0.15–3.41 kg per tree; (2) the treatment effect on Etree.ddependedgreatly on the weather conditions; (3) the cumulative Etree.dforthe 32 d dropped significantly by 22% relative to CON (P =0.038)under Elev. C and increased significantly by 21% (P =0.043)and 16% (P =0.048) under Elev. T and Elev. CT, respectively. In general, the modelled transpiration gave good agreement withthe sap flow results. The model computations showed that, ona typical sunny day in summer, the effect of treatment on crownstomatal conductance was responsible for approx. 80% of thechange inEtree.d , while the increase in needle area and theeffect on total radiation absorption contributed only a smallpercentage. Furthermore, sunlit needles were responsible forover 60% of change in transpiration. The effect of the treatmentson Etree.dwas larger at high temperature and vapour pressuredeficit but was not sensitive to incident daily radiation. A dynamic model for growth and mortality of individual plantsin a stand was developed, based on the process of canopy photosynthesis, and assuming an allometric relationship between plant heightand weight, i.e. allocation growth pattern of plant height andstem diameter. Functions G(t, x), for the mean growth rate ofindividuals of size x at time t, and M(t,x), for the mortalityrate of individuals of size x at time t, were developed fromthis model and used in simulations. The dynamics of size structurewere simulated, combining the continuity equation model, a simpleversion of the diffusion model, with these functions. Simulationsreproduced several well-documented phenomena: (1) size variabilityin terms of coefficient of variation and skewness of plant weightincreases at first with stand development and then stabilisesor decreases with an onset of intensive self-thinning; (2) duringthe course of self-thinning, there is a power relationship betweendensity and biomass per unit ground area, irrespective of theinitial density and of the allocation-growth pattern in termsof the allometric parameter relating plant height and weight. The following were further shown by simulation: (a) competitionbetween individuals in a crowded stand is never completely one-sidedbut always asymmetrically two-sided, even though competitionis only for light; (b) plants of ‘height-growth’type exhibit a greater asymmetry in competition than plantsof ‘diameter-growth’ type, (c) the effect of competitionon the growth of individuals in a crowded stand converges toa stationary state, even when the stand structure still changesgreatly. All of these theoretical results can explain recentempirical results obtained from several natural plant communities. Finally, a new, general functional form for G(t, x) in a crowdedstand is proposed based on these theoretical results, insteadof a priori or empirical growth and competition functions. Comparison of Trunk and Branch Sap Flow with Canopy Transpiration in Pecan   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Trunk and branch sap flow were compared with canopy transpirationin a 5-year-old pecan tree (Carya illinoensis ‘Wichita’).Total trunk sap flow, measured by a heat balance trunk flowgauge, was 122.8 kg over a 24 h period, corresponding closelyto the 113.4 kg of canopy transpiration measured by a largeprecision weighing lysimeter. Branches, less than half the diameterof the main trunk, had a total sap flow an order of magnitudeless than the total flow in the trunk. Sap flow in a branchwith a northern exposure was 41% less than that with a southernexposure. When sap flow was normalized per unit tree or branchleaf area, peak sap flow in the south branch matched that inthe main trunk. Tree transpiration and the sap flow in trunkand branches began concurrently, indicating little dynamic waterstorage in the trunk above the gauge. The hydraulic conductanceof the entire tree was 8 to 14 x 10–14 m s–1 Pa–1,similar to values found for a number of woody and herbaceousspecies. The mechanical development of the anchorage system of the taprooted tropical speciesMallotus wrayiKing (Euphorbiaceae) wasinvestigated by pulling over and examining trees with a diameterat breast height (dbh) of 4.2 cm to 14.3 cm. The mode of mechanicalfailure depended upon the size of the tree: thicker trees (dbhapprox.9 cm) failed in the ground with their tap roots pushing intothe soil on the winchward side; in smaller trees (dbhapprox.7 cm) the trunk snapped before anchorage failure; and in verysmall trees (of dbh<6 cm) neither type of failure occurredand the trees returned to their original upright position undamagedafter the test. The anchorage strength of the trees was correlatedwith the second power of trunk diameter rather than with thethird power that theory suggests is optimal because tap rootsdid not show an isometric increase in length or diameter. Thereforeas trees grow larger the ‘factor of safety’ againstanchorage failure falls, making them prone to fail in theirroots. These results suggest that only relatively small treespecies can rely solely on the tap root to prevent uprooting. It may be for this reason that most larger trees develop thicklateral roots.Copyright 1998 Annals of Botany Company Anchorage, tap roots, scaling,Mallotus wrayi, isometric growth, functional development, windthrow, root systems.  相似文献

The time at which a bud began to expand was related to its positionnot only on an individual shoot but also within the crown. Thedistribution of buds and branches on the shoot was uneven; theshoot tip, where they were densely clustered, was termed the‘whorl; and the remainder of the shoot, where they werewidely spaced, the ‘interwhorl’ stem. In spring, the terminal bud started expanding before the ‘whorl’buds which preceded the ‘interwhorl’ stem buds;completion of the flush of growth, determined by the end ofleaf expansion, occurred in the reverse order, ‘interwhorl’> ‘whorl’ > terminal. Similarly bud expansionstarted at the top of the crown and progressed downwards, andthe first shoots to complete their flush were at the bottomof the crown. Approximately 60% of the buds on each shoot beganexpanding in spring but only about half of these formed branches.Bud abscission began in May and by Sep. 45% of buds originallypresent had abscised. Most of-the buds that did not abscisewere the small buds at the base of the shoot that were not originallyassociated with a leaf. Approximately 42% of ‘whorl’buds and 28% of MnterwhorP stem buds formed branches. ‘Whorl’branches were approx. 60% longer that ‘interwhorl’stem branches; buds on the lower surface of the shoot producedlonger branches than those on the upper surface. The implicationsof the results for the development of crown form and selectionof superior oak are discussed. Quercus petraea, oak, buds, branches, crown form  相似文献

Extracts of small and mature-size lupin pods yielded four substancesaffecting the growth of wheat-coleoptile sections: one acidpromotor (A), two acid inhibitors(B and X), and one neutralinhibitor(Y). Inhibitor B was extremely active, however, coleoptile sectionsshowed no signs of toxic effects; they resumed growth at a rapidrate after rinsing them and adding ß-indolylaceticand (IAA) to the medium. 1 µg of IAA was required to counteractthe effect of ‘B’ extracted from 230 mg. Of tissue. On an equal fresh weight basis the inhibiting action of ‘B’in lupin pods was 500–1,500 times more potent than thatof ‘inhibitor ß’ in etiolated pea seedlings. Small pods of plants infected with pea-mosaic virus yielded3 times the amount of ‘A’ of healthy plants (equivalentto 1 µg. IAA 0.3 µg. IAA per 25 g. of tissue respectively),and approximately the amount of ‘B’. Mature podsof virus-infected plants again yielded more‘A’,but also 2? times more ‘B’ than pods of healthyplants. Healthy pods yielded more ‘A’ than virus-infectedpods, and there was no difference in ‘X’. A lupin abscission test was developed and the effects of proximaland distal application of -naphthyl acetic acid (NAA) are presented, and discussed with respect to results of other abscission tests. ‘A’ accelerated abscission when applied proximally, and delayed or prevented it when applied distally. ‘B’strongly accelerated abscission when applied in either way.A possible mechanism explaining the abscission-inducing effectof developing pods on later flowers is discussed in terms ofthe substances ‘A’ and ‘B’. The partlyprevented abscission observed on virus-infected plants was foundto agree well with the proposed mechanism.  相似文献

The ‘core-skin’ hypothesis postulates that secondarilythickened plants behave energetically as an inert ‘core’covered by an active ‘skin’, the ‘skin’being two-imensional, the ‘core’ three-dimensional.This would explain the ‘self-thinning ‘or‘–3/2’ rule of plant ecology, that is, the tendencyfor log (dry weight per plant) and log (number of plants perunit area) to progress along a straight line relationship, withslope = – 3/2’. The hypothesis was tested as follows. Plant nitrogen contentwas used as an estimate of the mass of ‘skin’ perplant, and dry weight as an estimate of the mass of the ‘core’.As plants mature the slope of the relationship between y = log(mass of nitrogen per plant) and x = log (mass of dry matterper plant) is expected to decline from an initial value of 1.0towards a final value of 0.66. The intercept of the relationshipis expected to reflect the intrinsic content of ‘skin’per unit of ‘core’. Genotypic variation in thisparameter should cause genotypic differences in the maximumattainable yield of biomass per unit area. The expectations were investigated by fitting the function y= p+qx+r exp – x to 30 sets of data on plant nitrogencontent, plant weight and time in 18 different vegetables. Simplelinear regressions of y on x were fitted to more limited setsof data on weights and nitrogen contents of mature trees. Theexpectations were, with some minor exceptions, confirmed. During the first 100 days after sowing (March-June) the followingchanges took place at the terminal shoot apices of Picea sitchensisseedlings: plastochrones (T) decreased from over 24 h to 4 h;apical domes enlarged from less than 0·20 mm to 0·45mm diameter (D); the ‘projected’ area of tissuesproduced by the apical domes (i.e. viewed from above) increasedin amount from less than 0·012 to 0·024 mm2 day-1;about 15 per cent of this tissue was re-invested in the apicaldomes, the rest was used to produce primordia; and the volume-doublingtimes of the apical dome tissues decreased from over 150 h to50 h. After 100 days there was no further re-investment in theapical domes, but the domes did not decrease abruptly in size.Less tissue was produced per day, but the primordia were smallerso that the rate of primordia formation did not fall precipitously.Plastochrone ratios were inversely related to D, but the relationshipbetween T and D depended on whether T was decreasing or increasing.Progenies which were known to be fast growing tended to build-uptheir apical domes rapidly (i.e. have large ‘re-investmentratios’) and to be capable of producing small primordia. These attributes can evidently be evaluated on seedlings andcould help to lessen the cost of tree breeding progeny-testprogrammes. meristem, Picea sitchensis, Sitka spruce, growth, shoot apex  相似文献

Development of seeds following pollination with irradiated pollenwas studied inActinidia deliciosa(kiwifruit) ‘Hayward’.Pollinations were carried out using two different sources ofpollen (‘Tomuri’ and ‘Matua’) irradiatedwith gamma rays at doses of 700 and 900 Gy. Non-irradiated crosseswere used as controls. Pollen irradiation had little effectonin vitropollen germination. Irradiated pollen affected seedset and seed content, and induced the formation of parthenogeneticembryos. In comparison to the control, the embryo growth ratewas slower and the endosperm contained very low amounts of storageproducts. Seed set was significantly reduced following bothdoses of irradiation. Two types of seeds were observed: (1)seeds with endosperm only; and (2) seeds with both embryo andendosperm. The proportion of seeds containing endosperm onlywas almost ten-fold higher than those containing both embryoand endosperm. Embryo production by gamma-irradiated pollenwas genotype- and dose-dependent. The induction of parthenogenesiswas higher following gamma ray doses of 900 Gy than 700 Gy,which suggests the ‘Hertwig Effect’; the best efficiencywas obtained with ‘Tomuri’ pollen. Ploidy levelof parthenogenetic embryos was evaluated by nuclear size (area)with the use of image analysis. There was a large differencein embryo nuclei size between control and parthenogenetic embryos(mean size 90.8 and 49.1 µm2, respectively). It is concludedthat parthenogenetic embryos represent trihaploids.Copyright1998 Annals of Botany Company. Actinidia deliciosa, kiwifruit, pollen irradiation, induced parthenogenesis.  相似文献

This review compares new developmental models on flowering andother vascular plants with evolutionary hypotheses formulatedby Agnes Arber (1879–1960) and like-minded botanists.Special emphasis is laid on philosophical basics such as perspectivism, pluralism about evolutionary modelling, continuum way of thinking, and fuzzy logic. Arber's perspective is best labelled as F uzzyA rberian M orphology (FAM Approach). Its proponents (‘FAMmers’)treat structural categories (e.g. ‘roots’, ‘shoots’,‘stems’, ‘leaves’, ‘stipules’)in vascular plants as concepts with fuzzy borderlines allowingintermediates (including transitional forms, developmental mosaics). The FAM Approach complements Cla ssical Plant M orphology (ClaMApproach), which is the traditional approach in botany. ClaMproponents (‘ClaMmers’) postulate that the structuralcategories of vascular plants are regarded as concepts withclear-cut borderlines and without intermediates. However, duringthe evolution of vascular plants, the root-shoot distinctionand the stem-leaf distinction have become blurred several timesdue to developmental changes, resulting in organs with uniquecombinations of features. This happened, for example, in thebladderworts (Utricularia, Lentibulariaceae). When focusingon the ‘leaf’, the FAM Approach is identical toArber's ‘partial-shoot theory of the leaf’ and Sinha's‘leaf shoot continuum model’. A compound leaf canrepeat the developmental pathway of the whole shoot, at leastto some degree. For example, compound leaves of Chisocheton(Meliaceae)with indeterminate apical growth and three-dimensional branchingmay be seen as developmental mosaics sharing some growth processeswith whole shoots! We focus here on the FAM Approach becausethis perspective is especially promising for developmental geneticistsstudying flowering and other vascular plants. The rapid and uniform establishment of soya bean [Glycine max(L.) Merr.] stands is conducive to higher yields. This studywas undertaken to determine the effects of cultivar, temperature, and seed size on the rate of germination and emergence. No cultivar effect on the germination rate was observed. However,in an emergence study from a sand-soil-peat mixture, cultivardifferences in emergence rates were noted(‘Chippewa 64’> ‘Wayne’ > ‘Amsoy 71’). In anotheremergence study (sand media) the cvs ‘Calland’ and‘Williams’ emerged faster than the cv. 'Wayne or‘Wells’. Time required for 50 per cent germination decreased (18.8–4.0days) as the temperature increased from 10 to 30 °C (5 °Cincrements). Emergence (50 per cent) from a sand-soil-peat mixturewas more rapid (19.8–6.3 days) as the simulated plantingdate (growth chamber set to simulate field temperatures) wasdelayed from 16 April to 15 June with an intermediate date of16 May. In addition, time required for 50 per cent emergence of thecultivars from sand decreased (793–76 h) as the temperaturewas increased from 10 to 30 °C with no decrease from 30to 35 °C. Seed size effects were apparent, with the very small seed germinatingslower than the three larger seed sizes. In the emergence studieswith both the sand and sand-soil-peat mixture there was a generaltrend toward more rapid emergence with the smaller seeds. However, the absolute differences were small. Significant cultivar x temperature interactions were observedfor the germination and emergence rates. In most cases the cultivarsmerged in terms of germination and emergence rates at temperaturesbetween 10 and 20 °C and at the higher temperatures thecultivar rankings were different from those observed at temperaturesbelow the merging point. A series of experiments was conducted to assess net CO2assimilationand growth responses to waterlogging of grafted and seedlingtrees in the genus Annona. Seedlings of A. glabra, A. muricataandA. squamosa L., and scions of ‘Gefner’ atemoya(A. squamosaxA. cherimola Mill.), ‘49-11’ (‘Gefner’atemoyaxA. reticulata L.), ‘4-5’ (‘Priestley’atemoyaxA. reticulata), A. reticulata grafted onto either A.glabra, A. reticulata orA. squamosa rootstocks were floodedfor up to 60 d. Soil anaerobiosis occurred on the third dayof flooding. Seedlings ofA. glabra and A. muricata, and thescions ‘49-11’, ‘Gefner’ atemoya, andA. reticulata grafted onto A. glabra rootstock were consideredflood tolerant based on their ability to survive and grow inflooded conditions. Scions of the normally flood-sensitive A.reticulata, ‘Gefner’ atemoya, and ‘49-11’tolerated root waterlogging when grafted onto the flood-tolerantspecies, A. glabra. In contrast, flooding of A. squamosa seedlingsand rootstocks, and A. reticulata rootstocks greatly reducedgrowth and net CO2assimilation rates, and resulted in 20–80%tree mortality. Stem anatomical responses to long-term flooding(12 continuous months) were assessed in seedlings of A. glabraand A. muricata, and trees of ‘49-11’ grafted ontoA. glabra. Flooded trees developed hypertrophied stem lenticels, particularly in A. glabra, and enlarged xylem cells resultingin thicker stems with reduced xylem density. Flooding did notincrease air spaces in pre-existing xylem near the pith or inxylem tissue that was formed during flooding. Thus, flood tolerancedid not involve aerenchyma formation in the stem. Near-natural multilayered Abies alba Mill.–Fagus sylvatica L. forests form structural mosaics and consist of patches in different developmental stages and phases. Knowledge of the diversity of patch structure and adequate methods to describe the diameter structure is essential for modeling forest dynamics. The hypotheses tested in the study are that near-natural multilayered stands are structurally heterogeneous (i.e., tree diameter (DBH) distributions of these stands are heterogeneous) and, that in these forests the finite-mixture models are suitable for modeling the empirical DBH distributions. Diversity of patch structure was studied based on data collected from 33 sample plots. In multilayered stands, four groups of empirical DBH distributions were distinguished using hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and correspondence analysis (CA). Stands investigated are structurally heterogeneous; 27% multilayered stands showed the slightly rotated sigmoid (SRS) type of empirical DBH distribution, 34% the distinctly rotated sigmoid (DRS) type, 18% the bimodal M-shaped (BMS) type, and 21% the unimodal highly skewed (UHS) type. The gamma distribution, the two-component mixture gamma model, and the two-component mixture Weibull model were more flexible for the SRS type of DBH distributions. The average p-values (Chi-square test) for these theoretical distributions were 0.4712, 0.4718, and 0.4660, respectively. The two-component mixture gamma model and the two-component mixture Weibull model were a good choice for modeling the DRS, BMS, and UHS types of DBH distributions. The average p-values (Chi-square test) for these models ranged from 0.2684 to 0.4854. In near-natural multilayered AbiesFagus forest patches of different DBH distributions occur together. The empirical DBH distributions in these stands are characterized by irregular and complicated shapes and therefore are best approximated by finite-mixture models.  相似文献
