Ceratium dens distribution in the Gulf of California was studied based on three oceanographic campaigns, monthly abundance (1995-96) and during three red tide events in Mazatlán Bay. 52 phytoplankton samples with a Bongo net and 64 microns mesh light, during the year 120 water samples with a van Dorn bottle were collected in two sampling stations and from three red tide events. All samples were counted by the inverted-microscope method. The results showed that C. dens was present in the upper Gulf of California and surroundings of Cabo San Lucas. Two peaks were observed during spring and autumn in Mazatlán Bay during 1995-1996. The highest densities (20-360 cells.-l-1) were observed in coastal areas, whereas the lowest densities (1-14 cells.-l-1) were recorded in the open sea. During red tide events in 1985, 1989 and 1997, 144,000-256,000 cells.-l-1, 100,000-400,000 cells.-l-1, and 189,000-592,000 cells.ul-l was observed, respectively. During the red tide events C. dens varied, although sometimes was replaced by Skeletonema costatum or Pseudonitzchia spp and Ceratium furca. C. dens, seems to prefer areas with high productivity.  相似文献

The photosynthetic pigment composition of Mesostigma viride Lauterborn, a primitive green alga, was determined. This alga contained chl a and b, lycopene, lutein, siphonaxanthin, γ‐carotene, β‐carotene, antheraxanthin, violaxanthin, neoxanthin, and two novel carotenoid fatty acid esters, siphonaxanthin C12:0 ester and siphonaxanthin C14:0 ester. The esters were saturated, whereas all previously identified siphonaxanthin and loroxanthin esters have been mono‐unsaturated (trans‐Δ2). Neoxanthin was the all‐trans form. This is the first such case detected in the chloroplasts of green plants. The 9′‐cis form of neoxanthin is believed to be universally present in the chloroplasts of green plants (Streptophyta and Chlorophyta) and is a precursor of abscisic acid. However, the 9′‐cis form was not found in M. viride. Based on these results, we discuss the phylogenetic implications and early evolution of the antenna pigment system in green plants.  相似文献

In vitro experiments were performed with Gymnodinium catenatum Graham strains isolated from three locations in the Gulf of California to determine the variability in toxicity and toxin profiles. Strains were cultivated in GSe at 20°C±1°C, 150 μmol photons·m?2·s?1 (12:12 light:dark cycle), and harvested during different growth phases. Growth rates were higher than in previous studies, varying between 0.70 and 0.82 day?1. The highest cell yields were reached at 16 and 19 days, with maximum densities between 1090 and 3393 cells·mL?1. Bahía de La Paz (BAPAZ) and Bahía de Mazatlán (BAMAZ) were the most toxic (101 pg STXeq·cell?1), whereas strains from Bahía Concepción (BACO) were the least toxic (13 pg STXeq·cell?1). A strain isolated from cyst germination was one of the least toxic strains. No significant changes in toxin content with culture age were observed (0.2 and 0.6 pmol paralytic shellfish poisoning·cell?1). All strains contained neosaxitoxin (NEOSTX), decarbamoyl‐saxitoxin (dcSTX), decarbamoyl‐gonyautoxin‐2,‐3, (dcGTX2‐3), N‐sulfo‐carbamoylsaxitoxin (B1), N‐sulfo‐carbamoylneosaxitoxin (B2), and N‐sulfo‐carbamoylgonyautoxin‐2,‐3 (C1‐2). Bahía Concepción strains had the highest content of C1; BAPAZ and BAMAZ strains had a higher percentage of NEOSTX. Differences in toxin composition with culture age were observed only in BAMAZ and BAPAZ strains. Cultures with a higher percentage of long chains had more NEOSTX, while those with a higher proportion of short chains had a lower content of NEOSTX. Gulf of California strains are characterized by a high proportion of NEOSTX, and seem to have evolved particular physiological responses to their environment that are reflected in the toxin profile, suggesting different populations.  相似文献

Two new lectins named Halilectin 1 (H‐1) and Halilectin 2 (H‐2) were isolated from the marine sponge Haliclona caerulea using a combination of affinity chromatography on stroma fixed onto Sephadex G‐25 and cation and anion exchange chromatography. H‐1 is a monomeric protein with a molecular mass of 40 kDa estimated using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and 15 kDa estimated using a TSK gel. Conversely, H‐2 is a homodimeric protein with 15 kDa monomers linked via weak interactions. H‐1 more effectively agglutinates trypsinized rabbit erythrocytes, whereas H‐2 more effectively agglutinates native rabbit erythrocytes. The hemagglutinating activity of H‐1 could be not inhibited by any tested sugars, but H‐2 was inhibited by orosomucoid and porcine stomach mucin. Neither lectin was dependent on divalent ions. H‐1 was stable at basic pH range and temperatures up to 50 °C, whereas H‐2 was stable at acid pH range and temperatures up to 80 °C. The H. caerulea lectins exhibited dose‐dependent toxicity against Artemia nauplii. Additionally, 76% of the primary structure of H‐2 was determined using tandem mass spectrometry to contain a unique amino acid sequence with no similarity to any members of the animal lectin family. This study suggests that the genus Rhodella be restricted to that set of features currently observed only in Rhodella maculata Evans and Rhodella violacea (Korn-mann) Wehrmeyer, that a new genus Dixoniella be established to accommodate the unicellular red alga, Rhodella grisea (Geitler) Fresnel, Billard, Hindák et Pekár-ková, and that Rhodella cyanea Billard et Fresnel be further studied for probable reclassification. These conclusions are based on ultrastructural comparisons of Dixoniella grisea with published information on the genus Rhodella. The presence of thylakoids in the pyrenoid, a peripheral encircling thylakoid in the chloroplast, a dictyosome/nuclear envelope association, and the lack of a specialized pyrenoid/nucleus association in D. grisea separate this alga from the genus Rhodella. Cell division in D. grisea is not demonstrably different from that in Rhodella, although the unusually well-defined material of the presumptive microtubule organizing center (MTOC) made it possible to follow the development and behavior of the MTOC to a greater degree than in previously studied red algal cells. The surprising amount of conformity in cell division characters between D. grisea and the genus Rhodella prompted a comparison of cell division characteristics in all red algal unicells studied to date. All unicells show a remarkable degree of similarity except for differences in interzonal spindle length, dissimilarities in size of the nucleus-associated organelle (NAO), and the unusual NAO of Porphyridium purpureum (Bory) Drew et Ross.  相似文献

Aquilegia elegantula Greene and A. caerulea James occur in montane and subalpine habitats in the southern Rocky Mountains of western North America. The red and yellow flowers of A. elegantula are nodding, odorless, protogynous, and secrete a concentrated (44%) sucrose nectar in the floral spurs. Seed set in flowers under pollinator exclosures was 12% while seed set in open-pollinated flowers was 65%. The flowers of A. elegantula are pollinated primarily by the Broad-tailed Hummingbird (Selasphorus platycercus [Swainson]) and by at least three species of pollen-foraging bumblebees, of which Bombus occidentalis Greene is the most common. The blue and white flowers of A. caerulea are erect, mildly fragrant, protandrous, and secrete a 26% sucrose nectar. Seed set in caged flowers in the field averaged 39%. in uncaged flowers 54%. The most important pollinators of A. caerulea are the crepuscular hawkmoth, Hyles (=Celerio) lineata (Fabricius) and ten species of pollen-foraging Bombus. The most abundant bumblebee species, B. occidentalis, is also a frequent nectar thief. Differences in pollination systems alone probably do not constitute an effective anti-hydridization mechanism between A. elegantula and A. caerulea, but do serve to reinforce differences in habitat and flowering time that distinguish the two species.  相似文献

Physical environment and physiological characteristics of marine mammals potentially affect the duration and depth of diving. Härkönen (1987b) proposed a hypothesis that the harbor seal would gain maximum energy by foraging at intermediate depths. To investigate this hypothesis, we studied diving behavior of the Pacific harbor seal (Phoca vitulina ricbardii) during 1995 through 1997 in Monterey Bay, California. Dive depths (n = 13,063 dives) were recorded via time‐depth recorders. Approximately 80% of recorded dives were classified as square dives (type I), which typically were associated with foraging in pinnipeds. Approximately 11% of dives were V dives (type II; 1,402 dives), and the remainder (1,225 dives) were skewed dives (type III and IV). The deepest recorded dive was 481 m, while the greatest duration was 35.25 min. Body mass explained the variability of durations of long dives for females (95th percentile; D95♂=‐5.47 + 0.18 × (mass♀), r2= 0.91, 95% CI for slope = [0.08, 0.28], n= 5) and for males (D95♂=‐5.86 + 0.18 × (mass♀), r2= 0.83, 95% CI for slope = [0.12, 0.24], n= 11). The large proportion of variability in deep dives, however, was explained by body mass only for males (95th percentile; Z95♂=‐363.9 + 6.05 × (mass♀), r2= 0.83, 95% CI for slope = [3.93, 8.17], n= 11) and not for females (Z95,♂=?148.1 +3.11 × (mass♀), r2= 0.58, 95% CI for slope = [‐1.7, 7.9], n= 5, 95% CI for slope= [?1.7, 7.9]). Median depths of presumed foraging dives of harbor seals in the Monterey Bay area were between 5 and 100 m, which were within the range of the previously reported depths for other areas (< 100 m). Our findings generally supported Härkönen's hypothesis that harbor seals forage in the intermediate depth in their environment.  相似文献

The molecular mechanisms involved in the establishment and maintenance of sponge photosymbiosis, and in particular the association with cyanobacteria, are unknown. In the present study we analyzed gene expression in a common Mediterranean sponge (Petrosia ficiformis) in relation to its symbiotic (with cyanobacteria) or aposymbiotic status. A screening approach was applied to identify genes expressed differentially in symbiotic specimens growing in the light and aposymbiotic specimens growing in a dark cave at a short distance from the illuminated specimens. Out of the various differentially expressed sequences, we isolated two novel genes (here named PfSym1 and PfSym2) that were up-regulated when cyanobacterial symbionts were harbored inside the sponge cells. The sequence of one of these genes (PfSym2) was found to contain a conserved domain: the scavenger receptor cysteine rich (SRCR) domain. This is the first report on the expression of sponge genes in relation to symbiosis and, according to the presence of an SRCR domain, we suggest possible functions for one of the genes found in the sponge-cyanobacteria symbiosis.  相似文献

The quadriflagellate snow alga Chlainomonas Christen, distributed in New Zealand and North America, has several unusual structural attributes. A process assumed to be cytokinesis involves extrusion of protoplasm from the parent through a narrow canal, C. kolii (J. T. Hardy et Curl) Hoham produces a net‐like outer envelope rather than a cell wall, and the flagellar basal apparatus of Chlainomonas consists of two semi‐independent pairs of basal bodies. Structural connections between basal body pairs appear minimal, but a connecting system different from that observed in other genera exists within each pair. Phylogenetic analysis using rbcL sequences places Chlainomonas in the Chloromonas clade, other known members of which are all biflagellate. Chlainomonas is split into two robust lineages, with New Zealand collections sharing an origin with northern North American collections. Although the quadriflagellate condition is regarded as ancestral in the Chlorophyceae, we speculate—based on ultrastructural and molecular data presented here—that Chlainomonas represents a derived form that has arisen from fusion of two ancestral biflagellate cells. Other explanations (for example, that Chlainomonas represents a diploid form of a biflagellate species) are remotely possible but are presently at odds with extensive observations of field material. Improvements in techniques for experimental manipulation of these sensitive cryophiles will be required to fully characterize their structure and progress our understanding of their biology.  相似文献

Cell wall changes in vegetative and suffultory cells (SCs) and in oogonial structures from Oedogonium bharuchae N. D. Kamat f. minor Vélez were characterized using monoclonal antibodies against several carbohydrate epitopes. Vegetative cells and SCs develop only a primary cell wall (PCW), whereas mature oogonial cells secrete a second wall, the oogonium cell wall (OCW). Based on histochemical and immunolabeling results, (1→4)‐β‐glucans in the form of crystalline cellulose together with a variable degree of Me‐esterified homogalacturonans (HGs) and hydroxyproline‐rich glycoprotein (HRGP) epitopes were detected in the PCW. The OCW showed arabinosides of the extensin type and low levels of arabinogalactan‐protein (AGP) glycans but lacked cellulose, at least in its crystalline form. Surprisingly, strong colabeling in the cytoplasm of mature oogonia cells with three different antibodies (LM‐5, LM‐6, and CCRC‐M2) was found, suggesting the presence of rhamnogalacturonan I (RG‐I)–like structures. Our results are discussed relating the possible functions of these cell wall epitopes with polysaccharides and O‐glycoproteins during oogonium differentiation. This study represents the first attempt to characterize these two types of cell walls in O. bharuchae, comparing their similarities and differences with those from other green algae and land plants. This work represents a contribution to the understanding of how cell walls have evolved from simple few‐celled to complex multicelled organisms.  相似文献

Macroalgal phase shifts on Caribbean reefs have been reported with increasing frequency, and recent reports of these changes on mesophotic coral reefs have raised questions regarding the mechanistic processes behind algal population expansions to deeper depths. The brown alga Lobophora variegata is a dominant species on many shallow and deep coral reefs of the Caribbean and Pacific, and it increased in percent cover (>50%) up to 61 m on Bahamian reefs following the invasion of the lionfish Pterois volitans. We examined the physiological and ecological constraints contributing to the spread of Lobophora on Bahamian reefs across a mesophotic depth gradient from 30 to 61 m, pre‐ and post‐lionfish invasion. Results indicate that there were no physiological limitations to the depth distribution of Lobophora within this range prior to the lionfish invasion. Herbivory by acanthurids and scarids in algal recruitment plots at mesophotic depths was higher prior to the lionfish invasion, and Lobophora chemical defenses were ineffective against an omnivorous fish species. In contrast, Lobophora exhibited significant allelopathic activity against the coral Montastraea cavernosa and the sponge Agelas clathrodes in laboratory assays. These data indicate that when lionfish predation on herbivorous fish released Lobophora from grazing pressure at depth, Lobophora expanded its benthic cover to a depth of 61 m, where it replaced the dominant coral and sponge species. Our results suggest that this chemically defended alga may out‐compete these species in situ, and that mesophotic reefs may be further impacted in the near future as Lobophora continues to expand to its compensation point.  相似文献

Ulva compressa L. is a heterothallic macroalga considered to be in the early evolutionary stage between isogamy and anisogamy. Two genetic lines of this species, each consisting of gametophytes with opposite mating types, were collected on the coasts of Ehime and Iwate prefectures: MGEC‐1 (mt+) and MGEC‐2 (mt?) from Ehime, and MGEC‐5 (mt+) and MGEC‐6 (mt?) from Iwate. Their relative gamete sizes (i.e., cell volumes) do not correspond to their mating types: MGEC‐6 (19.8 μm3) > MGEC‐1 (18.6 μm3) > MGEC‐5 (17.0 μm3) > MGEC‐2 (10.1 μm3). The pattern of organelle inheritance is an important sexual characteristic in many eukaryotes. We therefore investigated the relationship between gamete size and the inheritance of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA). Polymorphisms between the cpDNA of the two lines were used as markers. We found a 24 bp insertion between psbF and psbL, and the substitution of a StyI site (from C CAAGG to T CAAGG) in the intergenic region between petD and accD. Two interline crosses (MGEC‐1 × MGEC‐6 and MGEC‐2 × MGEC‐5) produced 42 and 38 zygotes, respectively. PCR and PCR–RFLP analyses showed that the cpDNA of the mt+ gametes was consistently inherited in both crosses. The cpDNA is inherited from one parent only, and it depends not on gamete size but on being mt+. The cpDNA was observed during crossing and in the zygotes 6 h after mating. In 6% of the zygotes, the cpDNA derived from the mt? gametes disappeared 3–4 h after mating. Preferential digestion of the cpDNA in the zygote’s mt? gamete may form the basis for uniparental inheritance of cpDNA.  相似文献

Summary

Codakia orbicularis is a tropical lucinid harboring gill endosymbionts which are environmentally transmitted from a free living-symbiont form to the new host generation after metamorphosis. Structural changes occurring in the cellular organization from incomplete gill filaments in young aposymbiotic juveniles to full differentiated gill filaments containing bacterial endosymbionts in reared symbiotic juveniles, were analyzed for juveniles from 250 μm to 2 μm shell-length. Aposymbiotic juveniles possess differentiated gill filaments with ciliated, intermediary, and lateral zones similar to those described in wild juveniles, except for the bacteriocytes which are lacking. Granule cells, which progressively differentiate during the morphogenesis of the gill filament, do not appear as a consequence of symbiosis. Experimental colonization of aposymbiotic juveniles by the free-living symbiont form has been obtained through the addition of unsterilized sand collected from the natural habitat of C. orbicularis. Two days after exposure to crude sand, symbiosis-competent bacteria enter by endocytosis at the apical pole of undifferentiated cells which progressively differentiate into classical bacteriocytes similar to those found in the adult gill filaments. Undifferentiated cells of aposymbiotic gill filaments remain receptive to bacteria several months after metamorphosis, and become bacteriocytes when aposymbiotic juveniles get contact with the symbiont free-living form. Therefore, the environmental transmission of symbionts does not appear to be restrained to a defined period of time during post-larval development in C. orbicularis.  相似文献

The range of Cladophora glomerata2 along the east and north shorelines of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway extends form just east of Montreal to Thunder Bay on Lake Superior. However, it does not occur at sites sampled in Georgian Bay, the North Channel or eastern Lake Superior. The dominant epiphytes on Cladophora throughout this range are the blue-green algae, particularly Lyngbya diguetii, L. epiphytica and Chamaesiphon incrustans, which account for 53 to 90% of the cell density. The diatoms Cocconeis pediculus and Rhoicosphenia curvata contribute to much of the remaining density. The red alga Chroodactylon ramosum is a minor component of Cladophora epiphyton but is widespread in Lakes Ontario, Erie and Huron. Filament morphology, cell diameters and lengths of Chroodactylon are quite similar to those of marine forms. In addition, this alga has been reported to be quite tolerant of a wide range of salinities. Chroodactylon has been found in 33 freshwater sites throughout North America and 30 of these are from the Great Lakes or its drainage basin. Therefore, it appears possible that Chroodactylon, like Bangia atropurpurea, has originated in the Great Lakes by a migration from the Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

Schottera nicaeensis (Phyllophoraceae, Gigartinales), presently known only from the western Mediterranean Sea and the northeastern Atlantic coasts of Europe, is reported for the first time from the Melbourne region of Port Phillip Bay in southeastern Australia. The species is perennial in the Bay, although tetrasporophytes and cystocarpic plants are commonest in late spring and early summer. This seasonal pattern, and the vegetative habits of plants during the whole of the year, show similarities to populations described by other workers for Northern Hemisphere localities where comparable water temperature and daylength regimes obtain. The small Australian S. nicaeensis community is found at 5–9 m depths and is concentrated on lighthouse foundations adjacent to the main Port of Melbourne shipping channel. It is hypothesized that the species has recently been introduced into Port Phillip Bay, and a scenario for its possible means of import on ships is suggested.  相似文献

To evaluate the role of bacterial symbionts (Buchnera spp.) in the black bean aphids (Aphis craccivora Koch), the aphids were treated with the antibiotic, rifampicin, to eliminate their intracellular symbiotic bacteria. Analysis of protein and amino acid concentration in 7‐day‐old of aposymbiotic aphids showed that the total protein content per mg fresh weight was significantly reduced by 29%, but free amino acid titers were increased by 17%. The ratio of the essential amino acids was in general only around 20% essential amino acids in phloem sap of broad bean, whereas it was 44% and 37% in symbiotic and aposymbiotic aphids, respectively, suggesting that the composition of the free amino acids was unbalanced. For example, the essential amino acid, threonine represented 21.6% of essential amino acids in symbiotic aphids, but it was only 16.7% in aposymbiotic aphids. Likewise, two nonessential amino acids, tyrosine and serine, represented 8.9% and 5.6% of total amino acids in symbiontic aphids, respectively, but they enhanced to 21.1% and 13.6% in aposymbiotic aphids. It seems likely that the elevated free amino acid concentration in aposymbiotic aphids was caused by the limited protein anabolism as the result of the unbalanced amino acid composition.  相似文献

Dolphin fish population data were recorded from landings in Sinaloa, Nayarit and Baja Califonia Sur, Mexico, in 1997. Of 3,211 organisms, only 2,812 produced complete biometric data. The maximal length and weight were 192 cm and 30 kg. The three sampling sites and the climatic periods also were associated with different size (P < 0.05). The covariate analysis of weight and length relationships indicated significative differences (P < 0.05) for total data and by sex. Condition factor was higher throughout the study period in Mazatlán, and the variation was higher, in the spring. The sexual ratio was in Mazatlán constant, while there were more males in Nayarit in the fall and the spring and in Los Cabos in the spring. There may be population differences, between the central mexican Pacific Coast and the Peninsula of Baja data.  相似文献
