The effects of an ecologically relevant range of salinities (2, 12, 22, 32) on thermal preferences and growth of adult mummichogs Fundulus heteroclitus were determined for fish from a southern Chesapeake Bay population. Salinity did not affect the mean temperature selected by F. heteroclitus in a thermal gradient, which was identified as 26.6°C based on observations of 240 individuals. Salinity and temperature had significant and interacting effects on growth rates of F. heteroclitus measured over 12 weeks. Growth rates were highest overall and remained high over a broader range of temperatures at moderate salinities (12 and 22), while high growth rates were shifted toward lower temperatures for fish grown at a salinity of 2 and higher temperatures at a salinity of 32. Significant reductions in growth relative to the optimal conditions (28.6°C, salinity of 22) were observed at the coolest (19.6°C) and warmest (33.6°C) temperature tested at all salinities, as well as temperatures ≥ 26.6°C at a salinity of 2, ≥ 28.6°C at a salinity of 12 and ≤ 26.6°C at a salinity of 32. Growth rates provide a long-term, organismal measure of performance and results of this study indicate that performance may be reduced under conditions that the highly euryhaline F. heteroclitus can otherwise easily tolerate. The combination of reduced salinity and increased temperature that is predicted for temperate estuaries as a result of climate change may have negative effects on growth of this ecologically important species.  相似文献

Four sympatric species of Fundulus (F. heteroclitus, F. majalis,F. diaphanus, and F. luciae) are distributed along tidal heightand salinity gradients such that F. heteroclitus co-occurs witheach species, while the remaining species rarely occur together.Feeding habitats of all the species are similar, and food hasbeen shown to limit population size of F. heteroclitus. Thispaper examines whether competition is an important structuringforce within this guild by addressing two questions: 1) is thespatial separation exhibited by three of the species due tophysiological barriers or due to competitive exlusion? and 2)when F. heteroclitus occurs with other Fundulus species doescompetition for resources take place? Laboratory studies indicate that all four species are tolerantof a wide range of environmental conditions; available evidencesuggests that physiological barriers are an unlikely explanationfor spatial segregation among some members of this guild. Competitiveexclusion seems a likely alternate explanation, but is supportedonly by studies of diet overlap. Similarly, only inference fromdiet overlap is available to answer the second question. A fieldexperiment is presented here in which F. heteroclitus and F.majalis were placed in enclosures separately and together. Competitionbetween these species appears to be important, and similar fieldexperiments are recommended to investigate competitive interactionsamong other species pairs within the genus  相似文献

When species hybridize, one F1 hybrid cross type often predominates. Such asymmetry can arise from differences in a variety of reproductive barriers, but the relative roles and concordance of pre-mating, post-mating prezygotic, and post-zygotic barriers in producing these biases in natural animal populations have not been widely investigated. Here, we study a population of predominantly F1 hybrids between two killifish species (Fundulus heteroclitus and F. diaphanus) in which >95% of F1 hybrids have F. diaphanus mothers and F. heteroclitus fathers (D♀ × H♂). To determine why F. heteroclitus × F. diaphanus F1 hybrids (H♀ × D♂) are so rare, we tested for asymmetry in pre-mating reproductive barriers (female preference and male aggression) at a common salinity (10 ppt) and post-mating, pre-zygotic (fertilization success) and post-zygotic (embryonic development time and hatching success) reproductive barriers at a range of ecologically relevant salinities (0, 5, 10, and 15 ppt). We found that F. heteroclitus females preferred conspecific males, whereas F. diaphanus females did not, matching the observed cross bias in the wild. Naturally rare H♀ × D♂ crosses also had lower fertilization success than all other cross types, and a lower hatching success than the prevalent D♀ × H♂ crosses at the salinity found in the hybrid zone centre (10 ppt). Furthermore, the naturally predominant D♀ × H♂ crosses had a higher hatching success than F. diaphanus crosses at 10 ppt, which may further increase their relative abundance. The present study suggests that a combination of incomplete mating, post-mating pre-zygotic and post-zygotic reproductive isolating mechanisms act in concert to produce hybrid asymmetry in this system.  相似文献

A strong foundation of basic and applied research documents that the estuarine fish Fundulus heteroclitus and related species are unique laboratory and field models for understanding how individuals and populations interact with their environment. In this paper we summarize an extensive body of work examining the adaptive responses of Fundulus species to environmental conditions, and describe how this research has contributed importantly to our understanding of physiology, gene regulation, toxicology, and ecological and evolutionary genetics of teleosts and other vertebrates. These explorations have reached a critical juncture at which advancement is hindered by the lack of genomic resources for these species. We suggest that a more complete genomics toolbox for F. heteroclitus and related species will permit researchers to exploit the power of this model organism to rapidly advance our understanding of fundamental biological and pathological mechanisms among vertebrates, as well as ecological strategies and evolutionary processes common to all living organisms.  相似文献

Fundulus heteroclitus, the mummichog or Atlantic killifish, is the dominant small-bodied fish species of the east coast estuaries and salt marshes of Canada and the USA, where it is present as two subspecies, the northern F. h. macrolepidotus and the southern F. h. heteroclitus. Recently identified as the premier teleost model in environmental biology, the species has long been of value in understanding evolved tolerance to toxicants and more lately in adding to our knowledge about reproductive effects of environmental endocrine disruptors. The body of literature on F. heteroclitus ovarian physiology and reproduction, from both field and laboratory studies, provides the foundation for present work focused on understanding the reproductive effects and modes of action of environmental toxicants. In this paper, we review the environmental and endocrine factors controlling ovarian and reproductive cycling in F. heteroclitus, noting specifics related to field and laboratory studies on the two subspecies as well as key research gaps compared to other fish species. We also summarize recent development of methodologies to study the effects of environmental contaminants on endocrine signalling and egg production in F. heteroclitus. Continued efforts to progress both our fundamental understanding of reproductive physiology in mummichog, coupled with studies focused on the modes of action of environmental contaminants, have high potential to further develop this teleost model. While the model may presently lag behind those based on other species of fish, the unique biochemical and physiological adaptations which allow F. heteroclitus to adapt to changing environmental and toxic conditions provide a valuable experimental system for comparative physiologists, ecotoxicologists and evolutionary biologists.  相似文献

Fast-start predator-escape performance of mummichogs Fundulus heteroclitus was tested across field-informed variation in temperature (24, 30 and 36°C) and salinity (2, 12 and 32 ppt). Performance was similar across temperatures and salinities when fish were allowed to acclimate to these conditions. However, when mummichogs experienced acute temperature changes, performance exhibited thermal dependence in two contrasting ways. Fast-start turning rates and linear speeds varied directly with the temperature at which the manoeuvre was executed, but these aspects of performance varied inversely with acclimation temperature, with cool-acclimated fish exhibiting faster starts across test temperatures. Temperature effects were consistent across salinities. These results suggest that while mummichogs increase performance with acute temperature increases, long-term rises in sea temperature may cause these fish to become more susceptible to predation during abrupt cooling events, such as when storm events flood shallow water estuaries with cool rainwater.  相似文献

1. The euryhaline fish Fundulus heteroclitus has an incipient lethal pH between 3.75 and 4.0 in fresh water.2. Fish exposed to pH 3.5 in sea water or fresh water died in about 3 hr, and had greatly elevated or depressed body sodium concentrations, respectively. The direction and degree of change in body sodium level depended on the sodium diffusion gradient between the environment and the fish. This is the first time that the death of fish in sea water at low pH has been shown to be associated with hypernatremia.3. Yet, sodium fluxes during the first hour of exposure to pH 3.5 in water of 3.5 or 35 ppt salinity were not different from controls, and body and plasma sodium concentration did not change during 2hr exposure to pH 3.5. This initial insensitivity of gill sodium regulation to blockage by low pH is quite different from the response of previously studied freshwater fish.4. The degree of acid tolerance displayed by F. heteroclitus is surprising considering its estuarine habits. This paradoxical tolerance appears to be a secondary consequence of its ability to adjust sodium balance in relation to rapid changes in salinity.  相似文献

1. The lateral line of Fundulus heteroclitus and Fundulus majalis is shown to react to tone at an intensity level of 20 dynes per sq. cm. at frequencies up to 200 or 300 cycles per second. 2. Evidence is given that the nerve can reproduce the stimulating tone frequency up to at least 180 cycles per second. 3. The response of the lateral line to the swimming movements of nearby fish is demonstrated. 4. Environmental stressors have been shown to alter immunocompetencein mammals. Similar effects have been reported in fish. Thepurpose of this paper is to review the literature concerningthe white blood cells and immunity in Fundulus heteroclitus.Evidence for immunosuppression following prolonged captivity,handling, hypophysectomy, radiation, changes in temperatureand salinity, and exposure to chemicals including environmentalpollutants is discussed. New evidence for immunosuppressionfollowing exposure to benzo-a-pyrene, pentachlorophenol, andhexachlorobenzene is presented. Larval and juvenile fishes were collected at low tide from the surface of an intertidal salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia every 6 days from 25 May through 20 December 1982. Larval fishes were present in shallow puddles of tidal water on the marsh from the beginning of the sampling period until the end of October. Juveniles were present throughout the year. Fundulus heteroclitus (Linnaeus) and F. luciae (Baird) accounted for 96.3% (67.0% and 29.3%, respectively) of the 4355 fishes collected. These fishes exhibited synchronous, temporal pulses in larval abundance, suggesting that reproduction was discontinuous and controlled by the same factor(s) in both species. Larval F. heteroclitus inhabited aquatic micro-habitats near the upland edge of the intertidal marsh, but as the larvae grew to juvenile size (≈ 10 mm standard length) they moved to lower elevations near a tidal creek. Large juveniles and adults of F. heteroclitus infrequently occurred in the samples, presumably because they leave the intertidal marsh as the tide ebbs. F. luciae were rarely found in low marsh areas, but all age classes (including adults) occurred at higher elevations, supporting previous suggestions that this species prefers high marsh habitats. The vegetated, intertidal salt marsh appears to be the principal nursery habitat for both of these cyprinodontid species.  相似文献

We have cloned and sequenced a cDNA encoding a vitellogenin (Vtg) from the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus, an estuarine teleost. We constructed a liver cDNA library against RNA from estrogen-treated male mummichogs. Five overlapping cDNA clones totalling 5,197 by were isolated through a combination of degenerate oligonucleotide probing of the library and PCR. The cDNA sequence contains a 5,112 by open reading frame. The predicted primary structure of the deduced 1,704-amino-acid protein is 30–40% identical to other documented chordate Vtgs, establishing this Vtg as a member of the ancient Vtg gene family. Of the previously reported chordate Vtg sequences (Xenopus laevis, Gallus domesticus, Ichthyomyzon unicuspis, and Acipenser transmontanus), all four act as precursor proteins to a yolk which is eventually rendered insoluble under physiological conditions, either as crystalline platelets or as noncrystalline granules. The yolk of F. heteroclitus, on the other hand, remains in a soluble state throughout oocyte growth. The putative F. heteroclitus Vtg contains a polyserine region with a relative serine composition that is 10–20% higher than that observed for the other Vtgs. The trinucleotide repeats encoding the characteristic polyserine tracts of the phosvitin region follow a previously reported trend: TCX codons on the 5 end and AGY codons toward the 3 end. Whether the difference in Vtg primary structure between F. heteroclitus and that of other chordates is responsible for the differences in yolk structure remains to be elucidated. The common mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus, functions as bothpredator and prey in the trophic structure of east coast tidalmarshes. Although mummichogs are generally considered importantto energy transformations within marshes, few studies have convincinglydemonstrated that predation by F. heteroclitus affects the abundanceof salt marsh benthic invertebrates. Thus far investigationsof this type have dealt only with the direct effects of adultmummichogs. The results of recent experiments have suggestedthat by controlling smaller predators, mummichogs may indirectlyhave a positive effect on the densities of some infaunal marshinvertebrates. Our current knowledge of larval and juvenilemummichogs in their natural habitat is minimal. Unlike the adults,which can utilize the intertidal zone only when it is flooded,the young remain on the marsh even at low tide, inhabiting shallowpuddles of residual tidal water that form between clumps ofvegetation and around fiddler crab (Uca sp.) burrows. The importanceof F. heteroclitus in salt marsh communities will remain incompletelyunderstood unless future studies consider the role of larvaland juvenile mummichogs. Although many species of fishes andwading birds feed on mummichogs, the blue crab (Callinectessapidus) is probably the major predator of adult F. heteroclitusin the intertidal salt marsh. Predation by adult mummichogsand xanthid crabs (e.g., Eurytium limosum) may contribute tothe high mortality of larval and juvenile Fundulus.  相似文献

Nekton (fishes and decapod crustaceans) is an abundant and productive faunal component of salt marshes, yet nekton responses to tidal manipulations of New England salt marshes remain unclear. This study examined nekton use of a tidally restricted salt marsh in Narragansett, Rhode Island relative to an unrestricted marsh during summer. In addition, a before‐after‐control‐impact design was used to examine early responses of nekton to the reintroduction of natural tidal flushing. Species richness and densities of Cyprinodon variegatus, Lucania parva, Menidia beryllina, and Palaemonetes pugio were higher in the restricted marsh compared with the unrestricted marsh. The unrestricted marsh supported higher densities of Menidia menidia and Fundulus majalis. Mean lengths of Carcinus maenas and P. pugio were greater in the restricted marsh. Tidal restoration resulted in increased tidal flushing, salinity, and water depth in the restricted marsh. Densities of Fundulus heteroclitus, F. majalis, and Callinectes sapidus were higher after 2 years of restoration. Density of L. parva decreased after restoration, probably in response to a loss of macroalgal habitat. Species richness also decreased after 2 years, from 20.9 species when the marsh was restricted to 13.0 species. Total nekton density did not change with restoration, but shifts in community composition were evident. In this study restoration induced rapid changes in the composition, density, size, and distribution of nekton species, but additional monitoring is necessary to quantify longer‐term effects of salt marsh restoration on nekton.  相似文献

This study tracked the seasonal distribution and winter habitat selection of the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus (Linnaeus), in a Cape Cod, Massachusetts salt marsh. Fish (mean size = 43.1 mm total length, range = 10–93 mm) were collected with a 1 m2 throw trap and by excavating sediments. In fall, F. heteroclitus began migrating upstream in creeks and eventually moved into upstream pools where they remained throughout winter. F. heteroclitus burrowed into the sediments of these pools at a density of 0.5 fish m–2, but was not found burrowed in the sediments of downstream pools or any creeks. Sediments in upstream pools were composed of a higher proportion of fine-grained particles and organic content than other marsh pools and creeks, and winter temperatures in upstream pool sediments remained above 1 °C. Temperatures in the water column and sediments of downstream pools regularly dropped below –1.8 °C, exceeding the lethal limit for F. heteroclitus. These results support other recent work showing that F. heteroclitus migrates upstream in salt marshes in fall and overwinters in salt marsh pools. Moreover, this study demonstrates that F. heteroclitus does not utilize all available pools as overwintering habitat but apparently selects pools with sediments that offer a thermal refuge from lethal winter temperatures.  相似文献

The mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus), a common Atlantic coastal killifish, is a model vertebrate species for the study of molecular genetic variation in natural populations and of environmental toxicology. We report the development of a set of 20 microsatellite loci in this species. Average expected heterozygosity across all loci was 0.84 (range: 0.60–0.97), revealing a high level of variability at most loci. A survey of seven additional Fundulus species yielded one or two robust amplification products in over half (63%) of the species–primer combinations tested. Therefore, many of these loci will also prove useful in studies of other members of the genus Fundulus.  相似文献

To assess the effect of land-derived nitrogen loads on fish populations, we estimated the abundance and growth rate of Fundulus heteroclitus and Menidia menidia, the most common fish species found in estuaries of Waquoit Bay, from June through September in 1996, 1997 and 1998 in six estuaries subject to different rates of nitrogen loading. Abundance of F. heteroclitus was greater in estuaries with greater nitrogen loading rates, but growth rates of F. heteroclitus obtained from growth rings on scales and otoliths did not vary among estuaries. Abundance and growth rates of M. menidia did not change with increased nitrogen loading rates. Increased nitrogen load may increase abundance of some fish species within an assemblage but not others. Such bottom up controls are effective at producer trophic levels, but appear to be less pervasive with secondary consumers. Higher trophic levels, therefore, may only be loosely coupled to nutrient supply rates.  相似文献

A freshwater population of the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus, was sampled during summer and autumn 1979, from the Bronx River, New York. Other occurrences in freshwater of this common estuarine cyprinodontid fish have been noted in Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Canada. In the Bronx River, this species is a significant part of the fauna and is one of the few species found throughout the river system. Specimens were examined to determine the growth and diet. It appears that this freshwater population does not differ from its brackish water conspecifics with respect to age structure, growth rate and feeding behavior.  相似文献

Synopsis Buoyancy was measured on eight species of estuarine fishes that were caught in 1 m depth or less. Mean buoyancies of the physoclists Fundulus heteroclitus, F. majalis, Cyprinodon variegatus and Leiostomus xanthurus were similar and ranged from –6.5 to –18.0 kiloPascals below atmospheric pressure at sea level. Menidia menidia and Pomatomus saltatrix measured –36.6 and –46.1 kPa, respectively. Two physostomes, Brevoortia tyrannus and Anchoa mitchilli, measured + 2.9 and –23.5 kPa, respectively, but the latter probably releases air when handled.The four most buoyant physoclist species live near the bottom in areas that receive daily tide induced currents. Negative buoyancy probably functions in them as in stream dwelling minnows and salmonids, which respond to currents by decreasing their buoyancy. The pronounced negative buoyancy of M. menidia may be a response to a preference for habitat where the currents are stronger, P. saltatrix, which can secrete gas into the swim bladder at the fastest rate known for any fish, combines high secretion (and resorption) rates with marked negative buoyancy. This enables it to quickly change depths over a wide vertical range, without overexpanding the swim bladder to cause positive buoyancy.  相似文献

Complementary DNAs encoding gonadotropin‐releasing hormone (GnRH) precursors were cloned from the mummichog Fundulus heteroclitus brain, showing that this species has three GnRH forms, i.e. medaka Oryzias latipes GnRH (mdGnRH), chicken GnRH‐II (cGnRH‐II) and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar GnRH (sGnRH). The F. heteroclitus prepro GnRHs have common structural architectures of vertebrate GnRHs, consisting of the signal peptide, 10 amino acids of mature peptide, GKR sequence and GnRH‐associated peptide (GAP). Phylogenetic analysis of fish prepro GnRHs showed that F. heteroclitus mdGnRH is a homologue of sbGnRHs and mdGnRHs of other acanthopterygian. Quantitative real‐time PCR revealed that mdGnRH was abundantly expressed in the olfactory bulb and in olfactory lobe areas and is expressed in the pituitary. The cGnRH‐II was mainly expressed in the midbrain and interbrain areas, and the sGnRH was expressed not only in the olfactory bulb but also in other regions of the brain. These results suggest that the mdGnRH is involved in the stimulation of gonadotrophs in the pituitary, whereas cGnRH‐II and sGnRH are involved in neurotransmission and neuromodulation.  相似文献
